Katy Perry kissed a girl, but her Christian parents think it’s ‘disgusting’

Katy Perry might be enjoying the kind of international success that most parents could dream about for their children. But it seems that while Katy’s parents think she has an ‘angelic’ voice they consider what she’s singing about disgusting.

Katy’s parents, both evangelical Christian preachers, say they are deeply ashamed of the star for ‘promoting a sin’. And her mother, Mary Hudson, declared: ‘I hate the song. It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting.

‘Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family and she knows how disappointed her father and I are. I can’t even listen to that song. The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.’

Mary Hudson added that not only does she hate the song, she’s not impressed with her daughter’s conduct either.

She said: ‘Katy is our daughter and we love her but we strongly disagree with how she is conducting herself at the moment.

‘We cannot cut her out of our lives as she is our child but she knows we disagree strongly with what she is doing and the message she is promoting regarding homosexuality which the Bible clearly states is a sin.

‘But the Bible also promotes understanding and forgiveness, which I keep reminding myself.

‘Katy is not a homosexual but I fear she has been led astray by the Hollywood crowd. I pray all the time that God will work through her and help her find salvation.’

Of Katy’s outfits, her mother said: ‘Some are too revealing and her father has had words with her about it. Like any child she is going through a period of rebellion.’

Daily Mail

Most children going through something that could be dismissed as a ‘period of rebellion’ would probably do so in their teens, not in their twenties, but Katy is possibly just a late bloomer. They are adding fuel to the fire by calling her ‘shameful and disgusting’, telling the world they are disappointed and hate her song, and that they think their daughter is a sinner who dresses like a slut. This probably isn’t going to go far to heal the family rift, which Katy has acknowledged in the past.

I haven’t heard all of Katy’s album, but her mother might have softened this a little by saying that she liked other songs on the album, or kept Katy’s dress sense out of it. It just seems to me that Katy’s parents should value their relationship with their daughter more than defending their Christianity.

Katy released a Christian gospel album in 2001 under her name Katy Hudson (Perry is her mother’s maiden name) which was unsuccessful. She was spotted by a music producer and moved to L.A.

Note by Celebitchy: Can someone please explain to me why there is not one scene of girls kissing in that “I Kissed a Girl” video by Perry? I’ve watched it a couple times looking for women to make out and nothing happens. Is this because of her Christian parents? It seems like a major oversight in the video.

I WISH that song promoted homosexuality – I’d like it more. The “hope my boyfriend don’t mind it” line is key. I have visions of hetero university girls making out on the dance floor as part of the late-teen hetero mating ritual. All for the boys. I read somewhere that Katy just calmly responded to her parents’ comments by saying that she stopped trying to change them at 21. Hope they return the favour!

P.S. Hi Celebitchy (xo) – I doubt the video would get as much play if she really did kiss a girl in it. Just speculating, of course, but I doubt her parents had anything to do with it. I think it is just an effort to keep it mainstream.

  2. geronimo says:

Love love love this song, great voice.

As for the ‘evangelical Christian preacher’ parents, the irony. It’s a SONG, you backwoods boneheads. Sick to death of this kind of tired old intolerant crap about ‘promoting homosexuality’. Hatred hiding behind a bible as usual.

  3. saintdevil says:

While I find the song annoying I think there is nothing wrong with shocking a pair of homophobes.

    Way to go, Katy!

Now, let’s think of a title for the next song which will give both her parents a heart attack…

  4. Syko says:

Hmmm – how about “Three Men at a Time is Not Enough” or “He’s Married but I Love Him Anyway”?

Are her eyes always so bulgy?

  5. EnKay says:

Ha! Syko – your comments are the BEST.

  6. geronimo says:

Well the natural progression would be

    “I f*ked a girl”.

That’d give them something to talk about at bible class, no?

  7. milk and kisses says:

Nice acne cover up. EEK. I really hate this song. Its an insult to those who are truly gay or bisexual. I’m so sick of chicks jumping on the bandwagon to be or sexy or risque or to piss off their fundamentalist Christian parental units. Yawn. Get some clearasil and come back when that acne clears up and you have something interesting to sing about. This is SO done.

  8. daisy424 says:

    Her Mother states;
“It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting.”
Not that her daughter was shameful and disgusting, that’s different.

I disagree with her parents, but we all know how parents can be, right? She should keep her mouth shut about her daughter to the press.

    *Sigh * Moderation….

  9. Tammy says:

Poor girl, her skin is awful. Very pretty eyes and teeth though! The song is catchy, lyrics are annoying when you find yourself singing along… or your 10 year old in the car.. oops.

  10. xiaoecho says:

The non kissing in the video could have something to do with getting the rating the record company wants so they can promote it.

As for her parents – It’s sad that their love is conditional………….I’ll refrain from ranting about religious zealots, even though I want to

  11. CoCo says:

Woah, Does anyone think she looks like Zooey Deschanel? They could be seperated at birth!

  12. czarina says:

Yes, xiaoecho, I know just what you mean about religious zealots. I keep feeling the need to defend all the (MANY) Christians (myself included) who have absolutely no problems with gay people/couples whenever someone behaves in a judgmental and obnoxious manner under the guise of being “Christian”.
I can respect Katy Perry’s parents their beliefs and opinions, but agree with Celebitchy that they could have found a way to state their opinion with a great deal more support for their daughter, rather than sounding so patronizing, rigid, and uncharitable.

  13. SeVen says:

Same shit, different day. Because being gay is sooooo damn Taboo! *sigh*

  14. elisha says:

She looks SO FREAKIN MUCH like Zoe DeChanel. That’s who I thought it was.

  15. Scooter says:

It’s people like Katy’s parents who make Christians look bad. The Bible makes it clear that only the Man Upstairs can judge folks; our job as a Christian is to be accepting and loving of others. I don’t really care for Katy’s music, but she is a talented girl.

  16. Bodhi says:

I’ve never even heard that song. Her parents are just judgemental Bible thumpers.

Does she still live with her folks? If not, I can’t imagine why she’d give a shit. As for the Christian album, I think she must have grown up & learned to think for herself or tossed her faith aside for success

  17. xiaoecho says:

czarina……I can’t help myself, I have to rant—the thing about fundamentalists is, it’s always about the wobbly bits– homosexuality, pre-marital sex, abortion, nudity. It’s almost as if, what would normally be a healthy sex drive is channelled into an unhealthy fear and loathing of the body and it’s natural processes. Fundamentalists of any persuasion are motivated by fear

I saw a man hanging around close to the entrance of the ladies loo at my local mall and, as you do, thought ‘what’s that pervert doing there’. Then a woman came out covered from head to foot, including gloves, in a black burka (it was stinking hot outside)and walked off with him. What did he think she was going to do? Commit adultery in the ladies toilets?? Grrr

  18. Jeff says:

While they may look the same, I believe your photo may be Zoe Deschanel, who has those haunting blue eyes. Zoe is also more likely to make those kinds of faces during a performance.

  19. The faux lesbian stuff is getting old.

If your gay then by all means, go ahead and kiss your girlfriend.

But these women doing it just for kicks or showing off, are so lame.

  20. xiaoecho says:

Lots of naughty words, I know, but CB please un-moderate me 🙁

  21. Sil says:

Lol, I know what it’s like considering I also have a preacher father. It’s the same kind of thing they’d say only they’d actually banish me from the family. I don’t like the song personally, it’s quite tame and yeah, reminds me of girls making out to impress guys.

Nevertheless I totally admire her cos she’s doing what I always dreamed of lol.

  22. Codzilla says:

I don’t know anything about this chick. Does she write her own music? Or is she another Britney type who just sings what the suits put in front of her?

  23. vdantev says:

Her music is flash in the pan catchy crap. She can get your attention, but she’s doing nothing new or interesting musically. She’ll have a limited shelf life if she doesn’t get some real music together. Making controversy is easy- having talent and ingenuity is something else.

  24. Ladybird83 says:

This girl shouldn’t even be famous! Her first album, under the name Katy Hudson, is a CHRISTIAN album. I’ll bet she thought “I didn’t make it as a CHRISTIAN artist so I’m gonna go be a bad girl.” This one trick pony is just proof that sex sells and not good sex… DUMB sex.

  25. CB Rawks says:

“Woah, Does anyone think she looks like Zooey Deschanel? They could be seperated at birth!”

Absolutely! I was going to ask if the photo was a mistake.

  26. Blackalicious says:

Agreed (Milk And Kisses) it’s hackneyed, done, over. It’s hip to be gay! Shocking!
*yawns* Anyway, it’s sad people get riled over a song. Christ. This is hardly uncharted territory- I’ve seen way worse lyrics in rap songs.

  27. SolitaryAngel says:

In one of my Criminal Justice classes recently, I made the perfectly innocent comment that Christianity was the most widely-accepted cult in the world–the topic was religion, cults, and the Salem Witch Trials. If they could have reached through my monitor, they would have stoned me or something. I was raised as a Christian, and I’m not knocking the faith, but these people like this girl’s parents are the exact definition of cult/zealot/fanatic. It’s fine and lovely to believe whatever a person wants, but to FORCE FEED it down everyone else’s throats is wrong, wrong, wrong.

    **Steps down off soapbox**
    P.S: Did I mention it was wrong?? 😆 😕

  28. dovesgate says:

Sorry, I don’t see how her parents are shoving it down everyone elses throat. They were asked what they thought of her song and they answered honestly. I have to give them props for speaking their feelings and beliefs even though it isn’t popular to be a Christian anymore.

It’s like Christians simply aren’t allowed to speak anymore without rabid non-Christians jumping all over them for the way they believe. Sorry, but we’re just as entitled to have our beliefs and share them as the rest of you do.

Oh, and you dont have to be a fanatic to think homosexuality is wrong. If my dad had ever found out when I was doing my bi-curious stage, I would have been permanently disowned and he doesn’t even believe in God as far as I know.

  29. DLR says:

Ah, yet more of “those people” that say same-gender relationship stuff is evil, bad, disgusting, immoral, etc. 🙄

  30. czarina says:

xiaoecho; I understand where you are coming from-really, any ‘system’ whether it is moral, philosophical or political can be corrupted by those who want to use it to create an “US and THEM” mentality; who want to feel better about themselves at the expense of others and/or those who can only deal with their fear of the unknown by being so rigid in their thinking that they have no ability to be open-minded.
That being said, there are things that I do not agree with (which I will not get into here, as this is not an appropriate forum), and there are things the Catholic Church is against (since I am Catholic, I am only speaking for the doctrine I am familiar with), and if you were to read the Church’s writings/theological arguments for THEIR perspective–while you might not agree–you would find that they were grounded in strong moral, theological and traditional reasoning.
I say this to point out that prejudice can be a two-way street and people who are not religious tend to make assumptions about religion without really finding out about it, or wanting to hear their side of an issue.
However, to me, the biggest problem is the word “Christian”, because anybody can (potentially) start their own church and call it Christian. Anyone can give out an opinion and claim they are speaking as a “Christian” (I’m sure Muslims have the same problem!).
In the article, all it says is that Katie’s parents are “evangelical Christian preachers”–of what Church? Based on what doctrine?
Anyway, sorry that was my “rant” for today…(oh, who am I kidding, I’ll probably rant about something else anytime now!LOL)

  31. Nouvel says:

geronimo love your comments. high five my friend.

  32. xiaoecho says:

czarina………it’s true – I don’t have the copyright on tolerance – and I’m particularly intolerant of religious zealotry, of whatever stripe….but I am not in their face with my intolerance.

Don’t forget, just because you are not against something, doesn’t mean you are for it 🙂

  33. lanette says:

to me it is disgusting. her parents are entitled to their opinion.

  34. jerms says:

@dovesgate: Yeah, so many haters against Christianity, hey? It’s so fashionable to hate on it, just like it’s fashionable to pretend to be all naughty kissing someone of the same sex *gasp*!

All Christians fuck up – whoops – did I curse? I did. Because no one is perfect, and that’s actually what Christianity is all about, isn’t it? The Big Dude had to send J.C. down here to make it all straight, since no one could follow the covenants from the Old Testemant correctly.

If Christians want to strut around like they aren’t sinning their balls off, they’re just as bad as the people they are condemning.

And, oh yes, I am a Christian. . . I’m just keeping it real.

  35. Christina X says:

I don’t agree with her parents, but I have no respect for Katy Perry since obviously money is more important than her family.

  36. geronimo says:

Thanks, Nouvel, high five right back atcha. 8)

  37. Paulette says:

“I don’t know anything about this chick. Does she write her own music?”

I don’t know anything about her either, except that she’s using Jill Sobule’s song from the 90’s. Jill’s version is WAY better, it’s a sweet song about kissing a girl for the hell of it.

  38. darlingstar says:

I have to agree with katy’s parents. They have a right to express their opinons. And yes only God can be the judge of things. But in the bible it also says that we as christians have the right to say something when we know what they are doing is wrong. Christians now a days don’t want to offend anyone or say when something is wrong. If we really love God then we would stand up for righteousness. I use to listen to Katy hudson back in the day. She was so on fire for God and encouraged me with my walk. It is just so sad how satan blinds people into thinking that the world has so much to offer. I am praying for her.

  39. rukia says:

ugh…katy katy katy. i agree and disagree with her mother. i dont think homosexuality is a sin but i think that katy is being really terrible with the path she has chosen for her career.
THIS IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO GET ATTENTION. not only does she have several [teenage slut] fans, she also has several [mature] haters to go along with that.

  40. Suzy Q. says:

You stupid people hating on those who have their beliefs. Her parents have a right to feel the way they do about their daughter. Dumbasses. Leave them alone.

  41. i think katy is fab!! Shes sooo different and is a breath of fresh air from all those clone artists!! she’s unique and doesnt fit into a particular ‘style’.. everyone loves her! shes a great artist.. and hey, i kissed a girl and i liked it. im straight! she’s talking about the things teen’s do! we experiment.. its what being a teen is about.. exploring different experiences! so all ye haters, get over it.. if u dont like her..keep it to yourselves.. peace out 🙂

  42. white tiger says:

Christians are to love God first and most, Lk.10.25-28; then others, then themselves.
God condemns homosexual conduct, I Cor.6.9-10.
To love God is to obey God, I Jn.5.3.
Ergo, christians must condemn and refrain from homosexual conduct.
This girls parents love her, but they do and must love God more.
He saves those who obey Him, Heb.5.9, and those who do not love Him are damned,ICor.16.22.

  43. Teagan says:

ok people get ova it. its just a song so what if she did kiss a girl its up to her not her parents. i mean my parents might not agree with it if i did kiss a girl but they would get ova it. and just coz a book with the word bible on it (no offence) does not mean that god is really real. and that it is a sin to kiss the same gender. i support the gya.lessbians and the bisexual its just human nature.

  44. MRSDEPP says:

i think thats totally ignorant towards gay/lesbian people.. its human nature to be attracted to people.. some people just cant help it if it happens to be someone of the same sex..

  45. minzLink says:

First of all, haters will and forever be ignored. Quit taking out your own insecurities on others and talk to someone about your personal issues. Perry doesn’t give a fu** about all your uncalled for negativity.

2nd of all, I just found out about her extremely religious parents and i have to say… poor girl but I’m so happy for her and her well deserved success which she worked for and shouldn’t thank an invisible man for until someone has very valid proof of this man in the sky — no a child’s story book called the bible is not valid. anyone can write anything. Loook i can write “I’m now god so bow down” WILL U?

  46. minzLink says:

P.S. @COCO : YEP she truly does resemble Zooey Deschanel very much even more than Zooey’s sister by blood, Emily Deschanel (tv: “Bones”) 😀

  47. new musik says:

I think Katy Perrys songs are just amazing, her songtext always make me smile and still there is a deeper meaning behind it. Does anybody know where I can get an autograph of her?

  48. Smartgurl12 says:

Her parents are bitches!! Why would they stay stuff like that about their daughter?! If I had them right in front of me I would kick their ass to the curve! I love this song it’s one of my favorite by her:) but her pictures are kind of creepy looking, but she still rocks!:) LOVE U FOREVER KATY!!!!!:)

  49. So not gay says:

Katy is a great artist! Idk why people are bashing her… She is doing what works and doing great at it by the way. She is the one makin the money right?! I say cudos to her for havin fun and making catchy music and as for her parents, they are just wanting what they feel is best for their daughter… I mean I want the same things for my kids 🙂

Anyway Katy your great and if you decide to kiss a girl again don’t hesitate 😉 lol
