Katie Holmes’s latest performance bombed at Sundance

wenn2805856

That was fast. Just a few days into the Sundance Film Festival, and already there is a major flop. This flop features the performance of our favorite robot, Katie Holmes. Don’t go thinking that Katie destroyed this film all on her own – from what I can see, her role is barely supporting in a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche and Ray Liotta. Katie plays Tatum’s character’s wife in The Son of No One – by the looks of it, a pretty standard cop drama. So why all the hate directed at the Kate-Bot specifically? Well… apparently she’s the worst part. And people (critics) were openly laughing at her melodramatic performance.

Katie Holmes just can’t catch a break — at least when it comes to her career. First her eight-part miniseries The Kennedys, in which she was set to star as former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, was dropped by the History Channel, and now her crime drama, The Son of No One, has earned the undesired label of the Sundance Film Festival’s first bomb.

Dito Montiel’s crime drama The Son of No One had its first screening for press and industry at noon Monday at the Yarrow Hotel Theatre ahead of its closing-night premiere at the Eccles Theatre on Friday. Anticipation was high for the new work from the writer-director of the award-winning 2006 Sundance crime drama A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. With No One, Montiel was returning with another gritty New York-set feature and a high-profile cast: Al Pacino, Channing Tatum, Ray Liotta, Juliette Binoche and Katie Holmes.

Though the theater wasn’t full, the room was crowded with acquisitions execs wanting an early look at the film. Reps from Samuel Goldwyn, Paramount, Summit, the Weinstein Co., Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, IFC Films, Morgan Creek, Screen Media, Miramax and Relativity made it into the theater by the film’s opening credits.

Some of them, however, were gone well before the end credits. In addition, enough regular audience members left early for one observer to describe it as an “exodus.”

The negative response went beyond the walkouts. One viewer’s attempt to begin applause after the lights came up drew almost no takers.

Though Holmes only had a small role in the New York-based cop flick, which stars Al Pacino and Channing Tatum, an insider tells UsMagazine.com her performance was memorable — for all the wrong reasons.

“When Katie showed up on screen, there was a collective groan,” says a source, who attended the screening. “She plays the wife of a Queens’ cop [Tatum] and she was completely miscast. They have her cursing a lot. And when she swore, there were chuckles.”

Continues the insider of the actress, 32, “She was wrong for it. Al Pacino’s acting in the movie was intentionally over the top, and he did it with a wink. Most of the cast seemed in on the joke — except for Katie. She was acting like she was in a dramatic Sundance indie, when it’s really just a typical cop movie.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter and Us Weekly]

Yes, Katie’s acting is pretty bad. It’s actually worse than it was when she was a kid on Dawson’s Creek – it’s like she’s spent the last decade picking up the worst acting “tricks” in the industry. What she really needs is to A) Get new management, a new agent, somebody who isn’t going to sugarcoat her awfulness and B) Find a niche. Like Jennifer Aniston – Katie needs to find some kind of role “type” that the audience will accept her as. Maybe it’s as the romantic comedy heroine – although I don’t see that for Katie. Perhaps it’s as drama supporting actress, although she usually sucks doing that too. Screw it, I have no idea what she should do. Just go shopping again, Katie.

No wonder she always looks so depressed.
First the Kennedy movie fiasco and now this. They seem to be doing some damage control by blaming it on the projectionist!

  2. mln76 says:

She was on the right track with a tv movie. Too bad it pissed off the Kennedy family. She isn’t a movie star and just like Aniston, Biel, and Garner she needs to surrender and go back to television. But I am sure Mrs Tom Cruise isn’t allowed to do television.

  3. lucy2 says:

She should go back in time a few years and when Tom Cruise asks her to be his whatever, reply with a “no thanks, I’m good.”

  4. Jazz says:

Jesus, the $cientologists have sucked the life out of her.

I feel bad for Dito Montiel, I loved A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints.

  5. echolocate says:

I feel sort of bad for Katie. She struck a bad bargain if she wanted to still have a career. She does really love Suri, but all the photos of them make it look like Suri is another of many who tell Katie what to do, which sucks.

It does seem hard to believe that her small role on this, however foolish and poorly executed, is the one that sunk the whole battleship. She’s the weak link and easy pickin’s. Interesting how Al Pacino’s over-the-top performance is somehow sold as “getting it”?

But yeah, agreed that she needs to head back to TV. One problem with a dramatic acting career is evident in the 4th thumbnail. She crinkles her nose in a cutesy way that is common to daddies’ girls (because mothers would dissuade it, as it is not, in actuality, cute). It makes her seem like a child rather than an adult woman who should be respected. Suri’s better able to strike a pose that commands respect than poor Katie.

All of this raises the question–if COS is so awesome and helps people achieve new heights, how come so many of the actors involved with them end up with careers much worse than they really should have had?

  6. Lenore says:

At this point I just feel sorry for her, honestly.

  7. guesty says:

She needs to be de-programmed ASAP. But that would mean getting away from Tom. Hopefully her contract expires soon.

  8. neelyo says:

She really screwed up. She had great management in the 90s, balancing small roles in prestige pictures with starring roles in teen B movies, basically learning her craft. She was bad in BATMAN, but probably would have come out unscathed if it wasn’t tainted by the whole Tom Cruise thing. She could have been a serviceable leading lady but now she’s a joke.

She must look at Nicole Kidman and be so jealous. Kidman got out, got an Oscar and is now nominated again for a film she produced. But Kidman had talent before she got into the marriage.

  9. happygirl says:

I kind of feel sorry for her, too. I think maybe she really regrets getting married and all that the cos has brought into her life. She looks like she feels trapped, and probably does.

  10. devilgirl says:

I am certain she isn’t looking for anyone’s pity.

You know I would be depressed too, if I had everyone analyzing my every gesture, facial expression and move, and assuming things they do not know.

  11. Marjalane says:

Sad, sad, pitiful sad. Maybe she was unable to stop shuddering whenever she looked at Channing Tatum. Isn’t it ironic that she took up with that freakshow Tom Cruise in order to further her career and it’s had just the opposite effect. Her whole life is like a cautionary tale from The Twilight Zone. “Oh yes, you can have everything you’ve ever wanted, you’ll never have to do anything for yourself- you won’t even have to think- But you will be held hostage to a gay midget and a bossy little girl that will ‘style you’ in hideous fashion.”

  12. Tess says:

Why don’t her parents do an intervention? Do they see what’s happening to her or are they helpless against Tom and the cultists?

    I don’t get it.

  13. dancingnancie says:

so let me get this straigt: Xenu can heal all wounds, diseases, addictions, finances and turn gay to straight, but bad acting is asking too much?

  14. LindaR says:

    @devilgirl – ITA

  15. TXCinderella says:

Maybe she should try Lifetime or Hallmark channel movies. She should stick with TV and quit trying to make it on the big screen.

  16. candy says:

It must be difficult for her to see Michelle Williams doing so well.

  17. anonymous says:

I don’t feel sorry for katie Holmes one bit, like Jennifer Aniston they feel that because they were or are married to a big movie star husband they deserve to be movie stars also, and they don’t have the skills to match they desires, the public have to suffer, case in point Will Smith and his kids, Jay Z and Beyonce(getting her that Star is Born movie role and we know Beyonce can barely act.

  18. gloaming says:

The Director is saying there were mass walkouts at the Movie because people thought it was finished. But apparently it was 99% over anyway and is utter shite so looks like the Director’s trying to curb the damage.

    From Deadline

I wasn’t at the screening, but I granted Elwes’ ask to explain what happened: “About a month ago, Dito decided to add a card, two scenes before the end of the film, that says, ‘Based on the book, Story of Milk.’ That is the character’s name in the film. Yesterday, the projectionist thought that meant the movie was over, and he turned the lights on. That’s when people got up. They thought movie had ended. Some left, but most stayed. This nasty little piece didn’t mention any of this. It’s not true that the movie is a bomb. We’re got three offers, but I feel some buyers pushing their own agenda with spin to bring the price down. Meanwhile, none of the reviews have come out. Before the press rushes to judgment, why not wait to see what real reviewers think, or at least get the story right?”

Seems like a dumbass move by the Director to add that title card a few scenes from the end. Oh, and for also casting Katie Holmes in it too.

  19. Cheyenne says:

    She has dead eyes.

  20. OtherChris says:

Juliette Binoche is still really beautiful, why does she look like crap here?

  21. Heh says:

Soooo, can we just acknowledge that she’s a bad actress? Really, that’s what it is. No sugar coating – she was a teen “actress” who was cast in a teen drama based on looks, and who never learned to act. Occasionally, she gets put in a good movie that does well in SPITE of her participation, ie “Thank you for smoking,” “Batman Begins,” but she’s just awful. Can’t act. Period.

  22. gabs says:

    @mln76 Totally agree.

Katie should go back to tv just like Garner, Biel, Alba, Aniston, Bell, and Lively.Im so sick of having these tryhard tv girls trying to be movie stars when they don’t have that kind of talent or appeal. They are delusional!

  23. I Choose Me says:

I’m no fan of Katie but this smacks of ‘easy target’ to me. She wasn’t that bad in Batman begins and I honestly feel that if it wasn’t for her association with Cruise and the CO$ the negative feedback would not have been as harsh. She was good in Pieces of April (never watched Dawson’s Creek) and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. She’s definitely a much better actor imo than Megan Fox or Blake ‘mumbles’ Lively.

  24. anoneemouse says:

Tom Cruise used to be a good actor too. Then Scientology came along and now he is the biggest over-actor in Hollywood. I see Scientology is working wonders on his wife too. Poor thing.

  25. Xx says:

She should be a mom and the wife of fat guy comedian on a television sitcom. Nothing wrong with going back to the original golden goose. Its steady work and she could redeem herself for a bit.

  26. JenJen says:

Maybe they wouldn’t let her bring her tin cans and auditor on the set.

  27. Poopie says:

hey KATE : just because your xenu hubby could slide around on a hardwood floor in his underwear to a popular song, DOES NOT mean he can act. too bad you hooked up with him thinking some of that ‘popularity’ would rub off on you.

    RUN KATIE RUN AWAY !

  28. lola lola3 says:

I’m sorry but she really isn’t a very good actress. She was absolutely wooden in “Thank you for Not Smoking.” By far the worst & miscast person in an otherwise great movie.

  29. bluhare says:

#17 Anonymous: Count me in the “not sorry for her” club. Katie made her deal with the devil when she married Cruise; bet her contract had something to do with Cruise getting her career on track in return for a good public image, and it’s not working out.

Inneresting, though. Technically she could nail him for breach of contract if they really do have one as he hasn’t held up his end of the bargain as his clout has dropped. She, however, has done her job.

She’s bummed because of her career, I bet. She can’t catch a break, that’s for sure. I do agree with everyone here, though, that it’s time for her to play the ditzy friend or some type like that. She’s a bit too old to start the Sweetheart thing now.

  30. eja102 says:

I’ll watch it. I like Ray Liotta a lot.

  31. aenflex says:

one day she will leave the cult. that’s when i hope she still has some open arms to run to. i actually feel bad (for her, not tom)

i hate tom. but to say he can’t act, well, i will assume folks that think that have judgement issues, ir maybe they prefer good actors like alba and sparkles

  32. Momo says:

At least she has the honor of Queen of stinker performances and go nowhere flicks. That’s sort of cult (no pun intended) celebrity status, especially in combination with her personal life. I think that she could probably choose better roles for herself than whoever is in charge of that now.

  33. hairball says:

“She should go back in time a few years and when Tom Cruise asks her to be his whatever, reply with a “no thanks, I’m good.”

    Totally.

I can’t help but feel sorry for her life though.

  34. Momo says:

I liked watching this clip of her on Letterman.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-dSSc40mI0
It is the liveliest I’ve seen her in awhile. It sounds as though she gets a kick out of Suri’s fiercely independent personality, despite their (allegedly) highly controlled lives.

  35. SRM says:

I just kept thinking “Tracy Jordan!” when I watched the clip.

  36. Ja says:

@dancingnancie: spot on! I don’t feel bad for her, we’re all grown up and in charge of our actions. Can you imagine what would happen if we all sucked at our jobs? And I mean jobs that don’t involve acting for big bucks…

  37. Camille says:

    @mln76 and gabs: ITA 100%.

  38. Jazmin says:

You mean she crinkles her nose when she smiles, and then curses a lot using one side of her mouth? BWWAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  39. NicoleAM says:

I haven’t seen it, but I thought she got good reviews for The Romantics? And I loved the movie “Go” that she did some time ago.
(Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but he has starred in some great movies and he is a damn good actor.)
