PETA picks a lot of small fights with celebrities over things that seem pointless and a often trite. Like they went after Sharon Stone for insisting that a live spider have its pincers removed before filming a scene with it in some B horror movie in the early 80s. PETA said she had a “heart of stone” for forcing the spider to be an “amputee,” calling it a “tiny insect” even though it probably looked like one of those spiders that’s as big as your hand. They partially make up for their insistence on even arachnid’s rights by also issuing amusing press releases, like one in which they ooffered to give Stone a free brain scan to see if she had some abnormality that was causing her to completely lack empathy for people and animals.
There are plenty of other groups that could get publicity for their cause by calling out celebrities on bad behavior, but they usually take the high road, or just don’t bother, assuming that they’ll come off as radical and reactionary as PETA usually does. The American Cancer society is definitely an organization that could get plenty of well-deserved press. They could issue statements pointing out the various celebrities puffing away and discussing the damage they’re doing to their health, the environment, bystanders and their skin. They could say how counter productive and hypocritical is to smoke and then to turnaround and spend thousands on high end skin care, botox, and dermatology procedures.
Instead they’re going after Michael Jordan for smoking cigars. Maybe the people at the American Cancer Society are old and think he’s still a major celebrity. I mean, he is, but let’s pick on the constant smokers instead. They seem to be taking offense because he’s an athlete, but the little ash-dropping starlets need some smack-talking too. They’re missing a real opportunity here.
The ACS is fuming over several photos TMZ posted earlier of MJ playing softball with a fat stogie hangin’ out of his mouth. Now, the ACS has unleashed a mouthpiece of their own, their former president Cary Presant MD, who told us, “When high profile athletes publicly display unhealthful habits they can mislead young people to emulate their behavior. According to the American Cancer Society tobacco use in this country is responsible for 1/3 of all cancers and remains the most preventable cause of death in our society. 8.6 million Americans suffer from chronic smoking-related disease. Since 1964 smoking has cause more than 12 million premature deaths in the U.S.”
[From TMZ]
Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Aniston, Mary-Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Lily Allen – they’re all smokers, and they’re all a lot more visible than Michael Jordan at this point in time. Maybe not Lilly Allen, but you get my point. American Cancer Society staff could definitely take some lessons in self promotion from PETA and start targeting some more talked-about celebrities. Unfortunately those lessons also come with a heavy dose of humility and some snickering when those organizations seem to overstep their bounds.
Update: The American Cancer Society doesn’t normally comment on celebrity smoking, but they were asked specifically by TMZ what they thought of those pictures, which were pointed out to them. They say someone from TMZ called them, a volunteer gave a pretty low-key standard response that smoking is bad for your health, and it turned into this big thing. I would credit peachfish but she/he wasn’t that gracious at pointing out the error, which was TMZ’s, not ours.
Lilly Allen is shown smoking a joint or hand-rolled cigarette at Glastonbury on 6/29/08. Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson are shown taking a cigarette break on 8/15/08. Britney is shown smoking on 8/9/08. Amy Winehouse is shown smoking on 6/9/08, but that’s the least of her problems. Credit: Fame
oh, that’s definitely a joint that Lily is smoking. she’s got a machine-rolled smoke in the other hand.
I would add Patrick Swayze to your list.
I love him, but jees… take a hint, man.
If they are going to do that then why not go after them all for laying on a beach, or in a tanning bed? They can get deadly cancer from that too. Theres even a show all about a tanning salon, I’m surprised they haven’t said anything about that.
I’m surprised they haven’t gone after the show “Mad Men” even though it depicts the ’60’s to a tee. They smoke like chimneys, in every scene
GEE i know why they are going after MJordan and not the so called starlets…
it is plain to see….
oh well maybe Micheal should “lighten” up, get it? 🙄
lindsey, britney and all the rest of the girls get a pass, right? 8)
PETA isn’t genuine when they go after people. All they want is press and have to do so by attaching their name to celebrities.
American Cancer Society’s heart is in the right place. They’re my TV station’s pet charity.
That being said, the Libertarian in me thinks they should just lay off of Michael Jordan. He’s a grown adult and it’s his body. I’m sure he knows full well what he’s doing and the risks involved.
It seems most of the stars they chose were shown at one point to come out of a tanning salon. Especially Jennifer Aniston…. Maybe this is why the American Cancer Society chose thes people. Because they DO smoke. AND tan!! It will show them what the organization CAN DO for them in just a few short years down the road, when these guys will need their services.. They will already be familiar with the people and the hospital affilations. You can’t beat that, for an inroad.
Why isn’t their anger directed at publications that show pictures of celebrities smoking? They’re the ones displaying it to the world. The smokers in question are just doing their own thing, for better or for worse.
(personally, I don’t care. But it does make more sense to get pissed at the advertisers of their bad habits more than at the celebs who have them)
they should sue everyone who goes outside! they should even sue the SUN for being in the sky and giving everyone cancer! Next they can go after everyone who eats FOOOOOD or has sex!
Blah, Blah, Blah…Doesn’t ACS have anything better to do with their time and money?
Way to take everything that step too far ACS.
You have a point to a degree and do great work, but people have a right to live their own lives within the law. Next they will be hasseling him for eating a burger or using full fat milk in his coffee.
Elisha your right – all they want is to gain press for their cause. Mean while there are worse things going on in the world.
Celebitchy, they went after him because he’s a role model. And a living legend. None of the girls you mentioned are even close to being role models. They’re more famous for their personal lives than for what they actually do. Mike is a celeb in his own right. People already know that everything these girls do is worng, and we’d be the last people on earth trying to emulate them
Yawn, this telling others what they should and shouldn’t do is so eye-droopingly tedious.
@StellaP – Mad men would not be Mad Men without the smoke. 8)
Rather than being a mouthpice for TMZ, take all of 5 seconds to go to the source: http://www.cancer.org/aspx/blog/Comments.aspx?id=242
This hardly constitutes “fuming” about anything.
You might also make note of the fact that TMZ called and SOLICITED an opinion from ACS.
Peachfish, this is the first time I’ve heard the ACS take on this. You can certainly point it out without acting like we’re the ones faking this news. No one has picked up their response so far and again I haven’t seen it yet. You could have communicated the same information by saying it matter-of-fact and adding the link.
I’d rather someone pick a fight with Michael Phelps and the other Olympians hawking Big Macs and Coca-Cola. That disgusts me more than the smoking. It’s probably because Marlboro doesn’t get to do commercials with the athletes donning gold medals and puffing on cancer sticks. Mickey D’s, on the other hand, gets to do commercials (many many commercials) with the athletes donning gold medals and chomping down on cancer burgers with a side of diabetes fries.
A lot of the worst lines seemed to have been added in after the movie was already done. ,
