Alec Baldwin calls TMZ ‘the updated receptacle of trash’

Alec Baldwin has had a long and interesting road since the infamous voicemail scandal with his then 11-year-old daughter Ireland. He’s long been a vocal advocate for father’s rights in the divorce system, and it was pretty clear he had reached his breaking point long before that call. Baldwin recently published a book called “A Promise to Ourselves,” talking about his divorce from ex-wife Kim Basinger and the frustrating struggle to maintain a relationship with his daughter Ireland.

Baldwin goes off on the tabloid media, specifically attacking TMZ, who he clearly still holds a significant grudge against. He said he was so depressed after the voicemail scandal that he was deeply suicidal for three weeks.

Baldwin had been trying to reach his daughter, then 11, but “she was off for spring break with her mother and her phone was turned off for 10 consecutive days … This had gone on for years now and … when the beep came, I snapped. [Harvey Levin, TMZ’s editor] seemed to be that breed of tabloid creature that realized an almost sexual level of pleasure from ruining other people’s lives.”

“He has created TMZ as the updated receptacle of … trash,” Baldwin writes. “He leads a cadre of self-satisfied twentysomethings who jump like rats from public relations sinking ship to sinking ship.” The release of the tape caused Baldwin to become suicidal, as he and the agoraphobic actress had been fighting in court over their daughter for six years.

“Driving up the Taconic Parkway, heading to an inn in the Berkshire Mountains, I began to think about what little town I would repair to in order to commit suicide. What semi-remote Massachusetts state park could I hike deep into and overdose there? When I returned to New York, the thought of jumping out the window of my apartment was with me every night for weeks.”

Thinking of Ireland, he resisted, thankfully. “I love my daughter with all my heart,” he writes

I think Alec can often come off as self-indulgent when he talks about personal matters, but it’s hard not to feel empathy for him. If anything it seems like he feels a lot more for his daughter than a lot of dad’s, and has an extra level of sadness and frustration over not getting to be in her life the way he’d like to. He’s said that since his divorce he feels more like an uncle to Ireland than a dad. If you love your kid with all your heart, I can see how that could create a particular deep kind of ache.

I can’t blame him for being upset with TMZ. Baldwin clearly knows he’s responsible for his actions, but it must be frustrating to know that there are so many people following you around, just waiting for you to mess up. However his temper is pretty legendary, and at the end of the day it’d probably do him more good to let go of as many of his old grudges as possible. He’ll be less likely to explode, and it can only help his other relationships.

You know, despite that message, I really like this guy. He’s funny.

  2. Feebee says:

I have a lot of empathy for Alec Baldwin. I think he’s been driven to the point of insanity by his ex-wife and that she has used their daughter to get at him. He has a point about Levin and TMZ. I can totally see him getting a hard-on about any number of stories that come across his desk. Alec just needs to be a little more careful, Levin’s only one of many.

  3. Codzilla says:

Alec is one of my favorite actors and I will continue to support his film/television projects without hesitation.

  4. skins says:

He is right. These lowlifes flatout taunt and try to provoke the people that they are filming. True scum

  5. Leandra says:

I totally agree with Alec about TMZ. When it comes to mean spiritedness and cruelty, they are truly the bottom of the barrel when it comes to online trash celebrity gossip.

  6. Andrea says:

I hate the way TMZ has their paps goad the celebrities by asking them totally stupid questions. They want something to go with their lame video clips. I can’t watch anymore as they are literally enough to make you cringe.

  7. Lauri says:

I have no sympathy for him. He’s frustrated over his divorce and custody issues? Well, welcome to the world. Lots of people are. That doesn’t give you a free pass to talk to a CHILD the way he did. And realistically speaking, he is very well known for his childish temper tantrums…so I seriously doubt that is the first and only time he ever verbally abuse his child.

I’m sure his ex has made things more difficult than they should be, however, it takes two to tango. He has not exactly come across as the voice of reason throughout this entire thing. Fact is, if he had never said those terrible things, there would have been nothing to report. It’s called personal responsibility.

Personally, I think he and Basinger are nuts and neither one of them should be raising a child. This kid is going to need lots of therapy as an adult. I predict a scathing tell-all from her in about 15 years.

  8. anony says:

That’s a sad and very real glimpse that he, like the rest of the hounded celebs are real people. I always found him a little intense and over the top but that’s what makes him such a great actor. I love how absolutely brutally concise he can be. His candor and total intolerance for the common line of bullshit is just what LA needs.

Anyway he is a riot. Rented the awful Garden State wanna be ‘Elizabethtown’ (Orlando Bloom was truly laughable in it, he seemed thoroughly medicated to the gills and was phoning it in) and Baldwin stole the movie as Bloom’s irascible boss.

  9. Syko says:

Who hasn’t lost their cool and said things they don’t mean? Even to kids. More chilling than the actual telephone call is the fact that someone leaked it in an attempt to cause trouble for him, which it did.

I like him. I think Basinger is batshit crazy, though.

  10. Kris says:

He is a jackass. The funny characters he plays are just that. CHARACTERS…he is NOT that way in real life people….You NEVER speak to a child like that. People should be required to pass a class before becoming parents.

  11. geronimo says:

Agree with everyone who agrees that those who work for TMZ are missing the ’empathy’ gene. And I think Baldwin is spot on when he describes them as getting something close to a sexual high from other people’s misfortunes.

  12. Mr. T says:

I’m no fan of him or his politics but as a divorced father, I can sympathize with him and his relationship with his daughter. He has to hang tough. My ex wife did all the evil she could but in the end it came back to haunt her. You have to take the high road in life. Living well is the best revenge.

  13. Beyondmusic says:

    Right on, Alec! 😀

  14. Syko says:

Kris, if we had to pass a test for perfect behavior before we could become parents, the human race would die out pretty fast. Everyone who is a parent and who is honest with themselves will admit to doing things they shouldn’t or don’t mean to do. As for me, I’d rather have a human parent with passions and intelligence than a robot.

  15. Kaiser says:

Levin is a sleaze-ball, but perhaps Alec Baldwin isn’t the best messenger…

  16. daisy424 says:

Kim should take responsibility for the release of that phone message. In trying to paint Alec as a cruel father and out him, she also hurt her daughter in the process.
IMO Her hate for Alec is stronger than her love for her daughter.
    Nobody Wins. 😕
    Agree with Syko,again! 😉

  17. Syko says:

Daisy, that’s cuz we are two sharp cookies! 😆

  18. daisy424 says:

    😀 Syko 😀

After reading your comments on several threads, I have to giggle, as I’m nodding in agreement. You’re absolutely right, about the teens, aging, etc.

” You can always tell the very young people who post, they’re so radiant and confident in their youth….” 😉

And yes, about the teens lying, climbing out windows, ahhh brings back memories……

My favorite ones are how the ‘younger set’ thinks about sex after 50! It only gets better. They will this find out for themselves in time.
    Thanks for the laughs!!

  19. ri23 says:

I love Alec Baldwin. He’s a great actor. The phone call should never have been released, it’s no one’s business. Kim Basinger is really, really crazy.

  20. cara says:

I think he’s great. And who are we to judge him over the phone call. Actually, he was very creative in his usage of words, I just curse at my kids.

  21. RAN says:

Once again I agree with Syko… well said and 100% accurate in everything you’ve said today 😉

  22. greer says:

Alec Baldwin is a drama queen. I don’t believe he really means half of what he says. And he’s funny as hell.

  23. javagirl1 says:

Gotta agree with Syko…no parent is perfect, most are just doing the best they can.

  24. Amy says:

I can’t imagine what it would be like if my husband and I divorced and suddenly he had custody of the kids.

I would go from seeing my children 12 hours a day to once every other weekend or something like that? I suppose, since Alec is *only* the father, he should be okay with that arrangement?

People have too little sympathy for fathers in these situations. It’s like people expect the mother to be more caring about the children or be the primary caregiver. I would be driven absolutely insane, too, if I was being kept from my children by a vindictive ex.

Yes, he was wrong for losing his temper, but I think Kim B. is the ultimate villain in this situation.

  25. Kat says:

If you don’t want it released, think before leaving messages for your child. Especially if your in the middle of a messy divorce. Hell, if my child came to me and I heard that garbage from her own father, I’d be tempted to release it too. His own stupidity is to blame.

  26. Jeanne says:

I like him as an actor, but if he was my dad I’d probably be scared sh*tless of him. Alec has always had that look like he could go from 0-20 real quick and beat your ass, or at the very least give you an abusive, demeaning diatribe. I feel for the poor kids who always suffer because of their stupid parents who can’t stop fighting. Just like Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen. All of the adults need to grow the f*ck up!

  27. YesReally says:

Good for TMZ and whoever released that tape. I hope that’s the only time he ever spoke to his daughter that way but it’s not the only time he ever went off on someone and from what I’ve seen the guy has a real streak in him. Stop making excuses for him people.
