Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl hates ‘Glee’ and Ryan Murphy too

wenn3221355

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t watch Glee. It’s not that I dislike musicals – I actually love musicals. Real musicals. But I don’t enjoy the vibe of Glee, with it’s ridiculous high school setting and what amounts to glorified Karaoke. Plus, the people in the show annoy the hell out of me. Lea Michele? I want to smack her. Matthew Morrison? Zzzzz. Dianna Agron? Double zzzz. That 40 year old Jeremy Piven-esque douche with the Mohawk? Ugh.

Anyway, as Glee’s popularity seems to be waning, more and more rock stars are speaking out about their hatred for Glee. Slash was one of the first to say he didn’t give a crap and wasn’t going to license his songs for the show. Then in January, the Kings of Leon and Glee creator Ryan Murphy got into a public bitch-fight over song-licensing, which quickly devolved into a faux-homophobic controversy. Now Dave Grohl, former Nirvana bandmate and current lead of the Foo Fighters, is calling out Murphy and Glee in a new interview:

When it comes to using his band’s songs on ‘Glee,’ the Foos frontman sides with Kings of Leon and Slash in the licensing battle. Don’t count on hearing the Foo Fighters hit “Times Like These” on Glee anytime soon. Frontman Dave Grohl says he and his bandmates are squarely in the corner of Kings of Leon and Slash. As in, they want no part of the Ryan Murphy-helmed show.

“It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do f—ing Glee,” Grohl told THR following the premiere of Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, the new Foo Fighters documentary which just made its South By Southwest debut. “And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his f—ing show… f— that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee.”

You might be wondering, has Grohl ever actually watched the show? As it turns out, yes, he gave Glee a whirl. “I watched 10 minutes. It’s not my thing,” Grohl grizzled. But he doesn’t have as much of a problem with the series as he does with its creator.

Recounting anti-Glee comments made by Slash earlier this year and subsequent retorts by Murphy, reported by THR, Grohl explained to drummer Taylor Hawkins: “The Glee guy, what a f—ing jerk. Slash was the first one. He wanted to do Guns ‘n’ Roses and Slash is like, ‘I hate f—ing musicals. It’s worse than Grease.’ Then [Murphy’s] like, ‘Well, of course he’d say that, he’s a washed up ol’ rock star, that’s what they f—ing do.’ And then Kings of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show.’ And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little assholes…’ And it’s just like, Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee. Me included.”

Said Hawkins: “Yeah, f— that sh-t.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

You know what I love about these quotes? I love that Dave recounted everything that went down between Ryan Murphy and these rock stars. Like, Dave was paying attention and he has a gossip-writer’s memory for details and chronology. I love him now. He and I are the same person.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see what Ryan Murphy says about this. You know he’s going to have another epic douche meltdown.

  1. sassenach says:

Even though I do not like Dave Grohl, I agree with him.

  2. sapphire says:

Always loved Grohl- I wondered how he ended up with Nirvana? He seems like a normal guy to to sit down with ,have a beer and discuss why Glee is not universally loved.

  3. Jess says:

    Team Glee-NOT for me:)

Ugh i know a few Glee lovers and I always have to bite my tongue when they start praising it…

I miss real shows like Arrested Development:(

  4. Eve says:

YAY!!! I knew I wasn’t the only one.

And yes, I can’t wait to see what ubber douche Ryan Murphy says about this — but I have the feeling that he’s probably going to accuse Grohl of being homophobic.

  5. The.princess.leia says:

Damn it! I was really hoping you were going to throw in a pic of Taylor Hawkins since Dave mentioned him!

Either way, props to Dave for not being scared of the Pink Mafia’s backlash. If an artist does not want to do Glee, they should NOT be shamed into doing it.

  6. Cookie says:

This is funny, I love it. “It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do f—ing Glee,” Brilliant.

  7. EbonyShiksa says:

I for one am glad more and more musicians are coming out with their…not hate…but, this dislike for Glee.

I tried watching it and couldn’t stomach it. And screw the creator of the show for thinking musicians are doing a disservice to human kind for NOT wanting anything to do with Glee.

  8. di butler says:

My already Grohl filled heart grew 2 sizes. Murphy is a douche and accuses everyone of homophobia. No, we just think your show sucks now. He also calls Gweneth Paltrow his “muse.” That’s reason enough to hate him. He wants her back, whenever she wants. So, to hell with the storyline, we’ll just pretend to do whatever GOOPY wants.

  9. junk573r says:

I don’t understand why he thinks he is entitled to profit off someone elses work. It’s essentially piggy backing off someone elses success. If he were truly talented, he’d be creating his own music. Then he’d have a leg to stand on when he started flinging insults.

  10. whitedaisy says:

I actually liked the show; for the first 6 episodes.
Murphy’s ego took over and it hasn’t had the same perspective since. I gave up after the 8th show.
    Why waste my time?

  11. serena says:

Ahahahaha David Grohl just is amazing, in everything he do. And of course, even in talking shit about Glee.
I too, don’t know that is so good about that show. It fucking annoy me.

  12. Ari says:

Dave Grohl is the man. Anyone who can bust out as the Devil in The Pick of Destiny and laugh at himself constantly and make the best songs ever can tell Murphy to go F himself and I will be a-okay with it. Glee will be over soon enough thank f-ck.

  13. Amy says:

I love Dave so much and this is the icing on the cake! Just look at that pic of Ryan Murphy, the self-important jerk. Dude, you write a supposed SITCOM! Would it hurt you to SMILE?!

  14. Buffy Wilson says:

    Yay–

I’m hearting DG even more than usual right now. I’ll admit to having Glee on, but I keep it on mute and listen to Led Zeppelin until Jane Lynch is in the scene. If there’s no Jane Lynch, then Glee—>Gloom.

  15. Isabel says:

I’m in the same boat. Not that I own the rights to any songs, but I absolutely cannot stand Ryan Murphy. The guy is such an entitled dick. And beyond that…I don’t dig the show. Can’t get into it. I tried. It’s cheesy and cliched and I’m just not impressed by it. Whatevs.

  16. skilo says:

Go Dave! I can’t stand glee or most of it’s cast and surely not Ryan Murphy. I’m waiting for the homophobic/anti-gay/child-hating/music-education hating response that is sure to come.

  17. Rebecca says:

He is creating his own music. The last episode was full of original songs. Not that I disagree that Murphy’s an epic douche, because he is, but he also does have original songs on the show, or at least did this last show.

  18. lucy2 says:

He’s absolutely right, it’s their music, they have the right to say when and where it’s used, and do not deserve to be attacked for not licensing it, as Murphy did to KoL.

I enjoyed the first half of Season 1, and then it lost it’s original charm (and plot) and I was getting very annoyed with it. Then Murphy started acting like a jerk, and I took that as my cue to quit watching – don’t miss it one bit. There are some very talented people in the cast, but that’s about it.

  19. Oi says:

yeah, glee sucks. Thank heavens someone is willing to call this guy and his stupid show out.

  20. jc126 says:

I’ve always had a big love for Dave Grohl, and this just makes me love him more!

  21. tango says:

Glee was entertaining. But now it’s just a farce.

    So good for Dave Grohl.

  22. Mindy says:

I completely agree with David Grohl. I adore him. This just makes me love him more.

Ryan Murphy is a total ass… it’s up to the artists whether or not they want their songs made all “white bread and mayonaisse-y” by being sung on the show. It’s not a “privilege” to have a song covered on the show (which is the way he’s thinking).

I watched Glee at the beginning and thought it was cute, but lost interest after the storyline went off-kilter (where is the plotline now.. really?!). Ryan Murphy should be more concerned with the storyline of the show than the songs. Seems that ever since about halfway through the first year, that’s what he’s been focusing on.. the music and nothing else.

  23. curmudgeon says:

I love musical theater. I can’t stand glee. Its like the Kid Bop version of anything it does.

  24. normades says:

I can’t stand it when people call others homophobes or racists because other people are against them for reasons that have NOTHING to do with race or sexual orientation. It’s such an easy lame defense. Note to Murphy: just cus you don’t like Glee don’t mean yer against the gays. Please.

  25. Wif says:

I just started watching Glee this week. It’s not great but keeps me entertained while I knit. I’m up to episode 9 (?maybe?) and I am thankful to Glee just because I got the chance to hear Kristen Chenowith sing that song from Cabaret. Gave me shivers. I also loved the version of Dancing With Myself.

But I disrespect Ryan Murphy for not accepting a “no” and acting pissy about it. But maybe that’s the way you get when you’re passionate about a project.

  26. Sigh. says:

Does anyone remember when some author DIDN’T want his (her?) book to be on Oprah’s Book List, and the world took a collective “Gasp” and clutched their pearls? As if no one in their right mind would refuse HER and possible instant recognition.

It’s easy to sell to the highest bidder for quick wealth/immediate recognition. So I fully respect and support ANYONE who choose to keep a choke hold on THEIR artistic property, because THEY are the one who had the vision, lived with it, and toiled over it, for who knows how long. It’s called INTEGRITY. So maybe THEY want to ensure it isn’t turned into the very thing they DIDN’T want it to be; a showtune sang by obviously 20+ year olds dressed as high school cheerleaders and such on an over-rated, underwritten tv show.

It’s THEIR music, just like it’s HIS show. They have should have absolute say in what happens with it, and a RESPECTFUL no, should be met with equal acceptance.

  27. Marjalane says:

Don’t know who this guy is, but I love him. And I especially love, (as Kaiser pointed out) that he had his facts down before he hammered that little pursed lip fool, Ryan Murphy.

  28. operagirl says:

Dave Grohl is brilliance personified, and he has a truly engaging sense of humor and a self-deprecation that is missing in far too many these days. I love his music, his perfect-pitch lyrics, and his fun videos.

    Glee? Meh. Totally.

  29. Juliette says:

I am totally with Dave. I tried to watch the show and I agree that it’s just glorified karaoke.

I love real musicals. Le Mis, Wicked, Oklahoma, The King and I – all great.

Ryan Murphy needs to SIT DOWN and realize that not everyone loves his show and that’s ok.

So much more respect for Dave Grohl now. I always liked him but my respect just went up 10 fold.

  30. original kate says:

haven’t seen “glee”, not interested. but grohl is right – ryan murphy seems like a total assclown. i mean, why ask these musicians for their work if they are just “washed up rock stars?” seems like a babyman to me. look, when ryan murphy writes something as great as “everlong” then he can talk. TV pretty much sucks anyway.

    i miss “six feet under.”

  31. L says:

I for once agree Dave Grohl on this one, the glee guy is a bully. I’m counting down to the twitter arguement.

That said I’ve disliked him and the rest of the band since they supported ‘alive and well’-A HIV deniers group. As in HIV doesn’t cause AIDS, you shouldn’t take HIV meds since it doesn’t do anything, and the validity of HIV tests are false. It’s a shame as I do think their music is awesome.

  32. albeli says:

    I LOVE Dave Grohl!

  33. viper says:

I dont know a single metal rock fan who likes glee. As a heavy metal fan myself I personally think Glee is utter unoriginal garbage and whenever I hear the word glee my mind goes straight to those abba potheads. Glee is crap so yeah fuck that shit.

    BOOYA FOO FIGHTERS!

  34. mike says:

I love Glee. Luv Glee. Did i say I luv Glee?

That said, Ryan Murphy is a gigantic douche, and I’m glad people are finally catching up to his doucheness, not to mention his misogyny. (Quick, name one Glee gal character who is unabashedly nice and a good person.)

On original songs, well, there’s a reason last ep blew and it’s because of those crap original songs. Murph should stick with what he knows the best, which is karaoke, and leave original songs to the professionals.

Lastly, I support Murph’s desire to have Goopy back. She has been nothing but ratings bonanza for the show, so why wouldn’t he want her back? I loved the eps she’s been in, and I want more Holly, dammit.

  35. lola lola3 says:

He’s right. What else is there to say?

**Except let’s hope Murphy doesn’t attempt to make this into another homophobic episode.

  36. Mia says:

    Team Grohl!

I hope Murphy says something. He might not after the KOL debacle where he & KOL came off as immature jerks. Granted what Murphy alleged painted him as a hypocritical drama queen who really needs to take a step back and realize his show is not the end all, be all of television.

  37. viper says:

This thread gets the best of week award. I am loving what the man said nothing but respect for these guys. Now lets see what kind of pussy fit glee pulls out of their asses this time.

  38. Kbomb says:

I’m a weirdo, because I love Glee and I f*&ing hate it all at the same time. And every time I watch the show (which I do PVR) a little bit of my self-esteem slips away. That being said, I kind of have do-me fantasies about Matthew Morrison and Puck. Which disgusts me. As for Grohl – LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!! And I think he is completely right. F U Murphy. And if he does pull a “homophobic” bullshit slant to this, I will totally stop watching Glee forever (no I won’t).

  39. crankychica says:

I watched the first season of Glee. Second season, not so much.

Murphy missed a great opportunity to rotate stars on an annual basis to keep the material fresh. How long can high school continue? Graduate Finn-Quinn-Rachel trio. Bring in some new blood.

And please, stop with the guest appearances. That’s when the show became BSP for out of work stars.

  40. Annaloo says:

    TEAM DAVE!

    F___ Glee!

  41. Samigirl says:

Team Dave. I love Nirvana and grew up listening to the Foo Fighters, compliments of being raised by a single father; and he has always remained true to himself. He doesn’t sell out and he says what he means. I personally never miss an episode of Glee, and I would LOVE to hear a rendition of Everlong, but if Dave doesn’t want it, then thats fine 🙂

  42. Luciana says:

I am a Gleek *ducks* but I still completely agree with Dave Grohl and the other artists/band who would rather not let the show use their music. It’s THEIRS…if they don’t want to share it with Glee, Ryan Murphy needs to shut up, move on and give his attention to the artists who will allow their music to be used on the show.

  43. EdithP says:

I was listening to the radio the other morning, and “Fat Bottomed Girls” came on, and I of course turned up the volume. Then, in horror, I realized it was the Glee version. Just awful.

    Go Dave!

  44. lisas says:

SOMEONE needs publicity. When was the last FF album?

  45. SHump says:

I quite like Glee, but I’m not a fan of Murphy or how he deals with the word “No”.
I’m also a fan of Grohl, and he’s totally and completely correct here.

  46. original kate says:

“Does anyone remember when some author DIDN’T want his (her?) book to be on Oprah’s Book List, and the world took a collective “Gasp” and clutched their pearls?”

yes, it was jonathan franzen, who didn’t want his book “the corrections” to be an oprah bookclub book. oprah got a bit high & mighty about it and rescinded his invitation to be on the show. i was on franzen’s side but when he won the national book award he fawned all over oprah in his speech, so both came off rather douchey, IMO.

  47. Brooke says:

    I f-cking love Dave Grohl.

  48. CoffeeTalk says:

He’s being unnecessarily dickish about it, in my opinion.

No, you don’t have to like Glee but it’s not like Ryan Murphy accosted him on the red carpet spewing hate speech about not licensing his music.

Someone asks him an innocuous question about licensing his music to Glee and he does on this profanity laced tirade about it.

I get that Ryan Murphy was an idiot jerk for going on about Kings of Leon’s nonexistent homophobia and yes, he does have an ego now about his show.

But I hate “rockstars” and their “I’m so badass! I hate on musicals and anything that isn’t ROCK ‘N ROLL! I cuss a lot!” attitudes. It seems so fake and attention-seeking.

  49. Eleonor says:

    Team Grohl!
A person has the right to say “no thanks I don’t want to be in/I don’t like your show”.

  50. Anguishedcorn says:

This reminds me– I’ve been wanting to request Dave G for HGF for some time. Mmmmmm-mmmmmmm.

  51. Sigh. says:

    @ original kate

“i was on franzen’s side but when he won the national book award he fawned all over oprah in his speech, so both came off rather douchey, IMO.”

Both ultimately showed a lack of integrity, I agree. But he still did have a right to refuse without her public pouting, not out of disappointment, but as if wronged (and hey, he might like her, but didn’t want her hype and her name still got a couple more copies sold for him, either way). You can be flattered or offended by an offer, but don’t be a big baby when its refused because you are the “bigger” celebrity (at this time).

But there is a lack of professionalism/decorum in ALL industries, to me.

  52. DesertRose says:

ITA with Dave and Kaiser. Glee isn’t that great, it also reminds me of snotty kids singing Karaoke. Ick.
I have to add, I haven’t liked Dave so much since he broke up Veruca Salt, but I do dig him as a frontman =)

  53. wonderwoman21 says:

Dude, I love Dave Grohl even more. Glee sucks. The concept sucks. The actors suck. Blah blah blah

  54. TQB says:

I keep a list entitled “Dave Grohl’s Principles of a Happy, Successful Life” posted in my cube. Here is the list, minus the very funny explanations:
    1) Dress for the life you want.
    2) Love your family like you love your guitar.
    3) Moderation in all things
    4) An audience is an audience.
    5) Try to be in 2 incredibly successful bands. If not, that’s OK.
    6) Man up. (Anyone who has to focus on being real has a problem.

It’s nice to read that even the Glee fans respect an artist’s right not to participate. Murphy should spend more time listening to his audience.

Oh, and @lisas, read the post – the quotes are from the premier party for the new album.

  55. Your mama says:

Clapping!!!! He couldn’t of said it better

  56. KB_explosion says:

    @coffeetalk

    i cosign completely.

i am a glee fan, for better or worse. it entertains me and in my opinion it’s the best of musicals and telenovelas put together.

if dave grohl doesn’t want his music there, that’s more than fine. it’s his music! but they way he went off on ryan murphy? look, we all know the dude is a douche, so be the bigger man and ignore him. that’s what i do. i watch for the songs, the ridiculousness and the incredible cinematography. (for serial, if you muted that show it would still be visually stunning)

  57. MNGIRL76 says:

I tried watching about 10 mins. as well. No. Just no. That Lea Michele girl! I could not bear to watch anything with her in it! I wish they would just go away!

  58. esblondie says:

I LOVE DAVE GROHL, always have. Every time I see him interviewed he comes across as a very sharp, funny, interesting man.

But now I love him even more, because I ALSO HATE GLEE WITH ALL OF MY BEING. I think he’s right – not everyone wants to be a part of that shit. I know if I was a musician I wouldn’t touch that show with a 10 foot pole.

  59. nellie says:

I with Dave on this with. I can’t stand Glee and think the show is hugely overrated. Including the guest apperances especially Gwyneth Paltrow.

  60. original kate says:

“But he still did have a right to refuse without her public pouting, not out of disappointment, but as if wronged (and hey, he might like her, but didn’t want her hype and her name still got a couple more copies sold for him, either way).”

i totally agree. i heartily disliked both oprah and franzen before their kerfuffle & i dislike them even more now.

  61. ordinarygirl86 says:

I HATE Glee, I think it’s the worst show I’ve seen in years. I’m sorry but it is glorified karaoke and most of the time there is barely a storyline. It’s simply a sugary kiss ass musical tribute FULL ON for an hour.

I really tried to like it because people RAVED about it but I just can’t…

Dave is right on everything he said. I’m glad somebody called Ryan out for his douchebaggery because everyone so quickly went off on KOL as homophobes and never aknowedge that Ryan was acting like a little bitch about not having his way. And I say that as a fan of his creative genius (Nip/Tuck anyone?)

  62. jill says:

I, too watched only 10 minutes of Glee once and had to bail.

Ryan Murphy is one of the most self-absorbed people currently working in Hollywood. He’s also clearly a sensitive little baby, too.

  63. jover says:

Team Groh I agree crankychica I liked the 1st yr especially the family dynamics of Curt and Finn, but the celebrity guest hosts – Goopy of all people – are ruining it. I don’t foresee it lasting but a few more seasons, and then it and its awful covers will be forgotten. However, as we all know in today’s frenzied media/entertainment environment, you have to cash in quickly – it’s difficult to see how a Cosby Show, Fraser, Friends, Cheers, or Seinfeld could have made it given that they all needed several seasons to get traction.

  64. Leek says:

    Dave Grohl is absolutely right.

I love KOL and was curious about the show after the battle with Ryan Murphy. Murphy said they were keeping 7 year olds from watching the show by not sharing their music, or something to that effect. I tuned in with my 7 year old son and the whole show was about sex. I really think Ryan Murphy should pick a new demographic to fight in the name of because it is not appropriate for these little ones. He seems like a total DB and the show sucks.

  65. MNGIRL76 says:

    Oh yeah! “Nip/Tuck anyone?”
I used to love that show! Christian!
I’m a season or 2 behind though. Is is worth catching up , or is completely stupid now?

  66. Ruby says:

Dave Grohl moved up a couple more notches in the legend department for me! I hate Glee. The commercials are played to death in Aust.

  67. Anti-icon says:

I love Dave Grohl and put a giant CO-SIGN on everything he just said. Glee is ovah….really, it was never happening in my book; but the powers that be on that show are seriously arrogant in their media manipulation and promo over-exposure. Have some class, and earn your audience the old fashioned way — by being entertaining.

  68. jaye E says:

I watch Glee, but I’m falling out of love with it…fast. It’s become a parody of itself and what I enjoyed about it in it’s 1st season just isn’t there anymore. I mostly leave it on now so I don’t forget to watch “Raising Hope”.

  69. cara says:

Woo Hoo DG! Love him Even more now!!!!

and I too cannot force myself to watch Glee, or those retarded Twilight saga’s….it’s like that scene in A Clockwork Orange, pure torture.

  70. xxodettexx says:

    i love grohl!!!

    Team Artists-have-the-right-to-not-be=part-of-Glee…

  71. Phoenix says:

I agree. I never got why Ryan Murphy was a whiny little bitch because people didn’t want their music on his show. Glee is a cheesy TV show- can he not understand that some artists wouldn’t want to be associated with that? Anyway, love Dave, but not loving this long hair 🙁

  72. Caz says:

Team Grohl. Glee’s first season was glorious. Then it degenerated into bad karaoke and a bit of a snippet of a storyline here n there. Now I just don’t care. Since when did it become a barometer of coolness? Agree with the previous blogger (can’t see your name) it’s become a parody. Rock on Slash, KOL and now FF leading the anti-Glee parade.

  73. Kim says:

Glee is a good show but the creator is a jerk. Dave is right- its the musicians right to say yes or no to their song being on the show. Why does he get so personally offended if they say no? Is his ego so big he thinks all musicians are dying to be on his show? pplleeaasse!

He is turning people off to the show with his bitchy attitude.

  74. dj says:

I have loved Dave Grohl ever since I read his quote re: (when Brittany shaved her head, etc.) “I don’t give two s–ts about Brittany Spears.” HA-larious! He is deliciously no B.S. Love him!

  75. gee says:

    Love me some Dave Grohl!

  76. devilgirl says:

I wasn’t aware a law was passed making it mandatory for all recording artists to have their material butchered on Glee.

I liked Glee for a while, but lately it is just getting on my nerves.

  77. HATEGlee says:

I hate both the show and Ryan Murphy as well this season. They had such a wonderful show full of heart and great aspirations. This year they have turned into a pedophile’s dream come true and making children into sluts and calling it cool – they even went so far as to actually use a pedophile’s song to sing pedophile style via Goopy – a man who is banned in 19 countries for raping a 9 & a 10 year old girls. You can’t get more despicable, except Charlie Sheen in my opinion of Ryan Murphy and co. I have officially stopped watching this show and now actively spreading the word of how damaging it is in the “children are sluts and that’s good” message it sends. I don’t care if the real actors are adults – then make a show about adults, they play children and the audience is mostly children. Never mind all the characters are just awful cheaters now.

  78. di butler says:

I love the people here kissing Murphy’s ass. He is LOATHED in Hollywood, but since he has had success and the gay mafia behind him, he has to be feared. Feared is not loved. How evolved we have become in our desire not to be homophobic, people have to be held in comtempt if they disagree and shunned from polite society. AWESOME. The plot and story line of that show come across like they were written by a nerdy theatre kid with a bad case of ADD.

  79. kristin31 says:

I like it when real musicians speak their mind about fake musicians trying ruin their songs by making it annoying and mainstream.. Glee turns songs into something my grandma would talk about.. I can just hear her now.. honey have you ever heard of Kings of Leon or Dave Grohl? they’re amazing..

  80. Chris says:

There goes my hero. Now if a few more celebrities would come out and 86 American Idol all this cheesy nonsense will be behind us.

  81. garvels says:

Love it. I was a huge Nirvana fan and I am still a Foo Fighters fan-I will never be a Glee fan. I barely could get through watching one episode of Glee-(I in all honesty, suffered a major headache at the end of the show.

  82. Banshee74 says:

I think people should have the right to decide what shows and movies use their music. I hate this show. There is nothing redeeming about it except for Jane Lynch…well at least that was what I got from the two episodes I caught. Both…painful

  83. My2Cents says:

I love Glee but I am a gay chick who has been in the cabaret scence for the last 15 year so Im all over it like a rash. lol
I dont care who is behind the scenes to be honest. If a musician doesn’t want his music used then that’s their loss.

  84. Eve says:

Dave Grohl moved up a couple more notches in the legend department for me! I hate Glee. The commercials are played to death in Aust.

    @ Ruby (#66):

That’s the main reason why I hate that lousy show so much! I have made the choice: I DO NOT F*CKING WANT TO WATCH that shit yet they push those heinous musical numbers down our throats via endless commercials that sometimes I’m forced to watch because they are aired while I’m watching The Simpsons (or any other Fox Entertainement Television show — in Brazil it’s a cable/satellite channel, not sure about there).

The more people (well-established musicians) say they hate Glee as much as we do, the bigger are the chances this atrocity gets cancelled.

  85. CB Rawks says:

I absolutely agree! Just because a person doesn’t want to be involved in his stupid show, Murphy throws bitchy hissy fits! It’s like if you get asked to the prom and you say no thanks, and then the guy who asked you retorts “Bitch!”

  86. Eve says:

This is so great!…Apparently Damon Albarn (from Blur and Gorillaz) also doesn’t want his bands’s songs appearing in Glee (and he stated that last year).

  87. jemshoes says:

    “Glee = glorified karaoke”

    hahaha 😀

  88. Leticia says:

    Right on, Dave!! Yes!

  89. Chris says:

^Dito American Idol. The trouble with the singers on both shows is that although some of them have a wide vocal range none of them know how to interpret a song and sound the same regardless of what they’re singing about. They just hit a few high notes and people think they’re good singers. And don’t get me started on So You Think You Can Dance and there gymnastic floor routines masquerading as dance numbers.

  90. G. says:

Hey, if someone doesn’t want their music on Glee, it’s their choice. RM is douchey and off-putting.

I used to love Glee in the first season, but now…not so much. I miss when it had a storyline.

  91. MSat says:

Anyone who says Grohl OR the Foo Fighters need the publicity is obviously living under a rock. The Foo Fighters is not only one of the more critically acclaimed rock bands around, but they also happen to be a huge commercial success, both with their recording and touring endeavors. I wonder if the “Glee” kids could sell out Wembley Stadium in 28 minutes like the Foo Fighters have?

Glee is not made for Foo Fighters fans, so why WOULD Grohl and the guys want their music on the show? It’s all about pop tarts and sex, and every once in a while they trot out Kurt’s dad when they think they need to “send a message” and look like a serious show.

Murphy really needs to check himself.

  92. Mrs Odie 2 says:

As a high school teacher, I can’t enjoy a show about the self-important drama of teens (who are all clearly nearly 30), nor about teachers with no boundaries who apparently never actually teach classes.

  93. Zelda says:

That show is horrible about women. There is not one female character that is not a ridiculous stereotype. They are all highly shrill and neurotic, conniving schemers, or bimbos. Or they are fat and/or minority (no other personality needed then)
And that snotty Kurt character makes me want to punch things.

    That show is the worst.

  94. Kloops says:

Glee is on a downward spiral, the clock is ticking. And Ryan Murphy is an idiot.

  95. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I agree with coffeetalk, here. Even though I totally agree with the spirit of what he’s saying in that he does not owe himself to anyone and politicizing that refusal into a smear campaign based on the imaginary, that kind of smoking in the boy’s room posturing–it’s so prosaic. That last quotation? Really? Great explication, Cicero.

True, Murphy has one of the most expquisitely punchable Princess of Pout face that brings out the pugilist in me.

You’d think that at this stage in the game, he would look at the pattern of rise and decline which is persistant not only in him, but in so many of the current slate of super show runners.
It’s this odd affliction that dogs David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrahms and Josh Schwartz et al, I’ll assume, in that they’ll have an idea, it’ll explode one day, the next day all focus and connections to the central premise get maimed or killed, the next day they stop even paying attention to the show and the next day they’re caught cavorting with a younger, sexier spec script. And the erstwhile darling? That gets stuck with clip shows and schedule changes too frequent to save viewing figures and it’s Throw Popular off the Train time.

Here’s an idea: Ryan Murphy needs to leave school so he can learn to act like an adult and Dave Grohl should consider going back to one so that he can learn to speak like one. I agree with him but, oh my days that was beyond irritating. It’s like an Edina/Patsy-Saffron exchange without the LaCroix and falling.

*sigh*. I wish Patsy Stone would adopt me.

  96. Mrs Odie 2 says:

Zelda, I totally agree about the women on the show being written poorly. Only the male characters are layered and complex.

  97. GrnMtGirl says:

I Love Dave Grohl. It would be so cool to hang out with him…share a meal and conversation!!

  98. Newbie says:

Awesome. I hate Glee. Dumbest show of all time.

  99. truthzbetta says:

I remember the Slash comments. They were so damn funny because from a rocker’s perspective this whole scene must be jaw dropping.

How the hell could anybody call Slash washed up when they’re begging for his tunes and he’s still going strong. Ryan Murphy deserved this:

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the guitarist said the idea of Guns N’ Roses on Glee has been nixed.

“Actually, we got asked about that once already but it got turned down,” he says.

“In the current climate of what’s going on in entertainment these days, I try to be more optimistic than negative because it’s really easy to get negative about it, but I draw the line at Glee. Glee is worse than Grease and Grease is bad enough…. When Grease came out I was like, “Oh, c’mon, give me a break.” Actually, I look at Grease now and think: Between High School Musical and Glee, Grease was a brilliant work of art.”

    Ouch.

Dave Grohl’s best moment for me was when he called bedraggled Southern Rock wannabe American Idol Runner up Bo Bice “Skynnerdy.” That was even before his coke arrest. I liked Bo, but Dave hit the mark on that one.

  100. Mel says:

I am so down with Dave Grohl right now for stickin it to Ryan Murphy. As everyone has said, he is an uberdouche – I am so sick of all the glee episodes being taken over by homosexuality – dont get me wrong, I love that Glee is doing something about addressing the issues faced by teens who are different, and a lot of that is homosexual teens who are being treated like crap for being homosexual….but every episode glorying Kurt and his whiny ways is stupid – I get the impression Kurt is like a mini-Ryan Murphy, and all he ever does it whine “why me?” and attack everyone for being homophobic when they arent, as though any criticism of Kurt is a homophobic attack.

Heres what I truly, truly hate about Murphy though. He is the worlds biggest, douchiest hypocrite. Where he is so supportive of the gay community and their trials and tribulations, he week in, week out goes to town on other minorities, the two coming to mind now are christians and virgins.

Holly actually insinuated that Rachel and Quinn were “frigid” the other week because they didnt want to have sex in high school – frigid is the universally used term by high school guys trying to shame girls into having sex, lest they be “diseased” with frigidity….lets all hurl together, whilst marvelling at how Murphy has just made the huge amount of high schoolers feel even more pressured.

As for Christians, yes, there is scope for poking some fun at over-zealous, uber conservative Christians – but where has there ever been a balance shown of how there are also normal Christians, or Christians who are treated like crap in high school as well? Nowehere, thats where. Murphy is either rolling out the Christian hypocritical stereotype each week, or he is presenting it as a crap religion full of falseness and tripe.

  101. Sam says:

I Love Dave and always have!! good for him, no one should bully you in to giving your music. especially not the writer/creator (whatever he is)of a show that deals with bullys!

  102. Amirza says:

Two thumbs up for David Grohl!! That tv show should be banned for stupidity and promoting homosexuality in a very stereotypical manner..

  103. Mario says:

People shouldn’t assume that heterosexual male celebrities are incapable of being homophobic. Anyone in the music industry should be flattered if a successful television series asks to use their music. As musicians you’re lucky you have a career at all. You could be polite if you don’t want to be a part of it, and not act like an arrogant douche.

  104. Eve says:

    @ Mario:

The KOL’s guys were polite when they refused it (to have their song featured there). Ryan Murphy then called them “assholes” and told them to f*ck off — just because of that, because they said no.

It was only after he twittered the insults that the band’s drummer (I think) made those rude remarks that, in my opinion, were more mysoginistic than homophobic.

There are heteressoxual celebrities who are extremely homophobic — the problem is that when you (generically speaking) start accusing everyone of being a homophobe because they don’t agree with you, then that’s just wrong. And that’s exactly what Murphy did.

Anyone in the music industry should be flattered if a successful television series asks to use their music.

I really disagree with that statement. People are entitled to feel protective about their work, and they — who are the authors, who composed the song in the first place — have every freaking right to do so.

  105. Zelda says:

    @Eve
    I’m with you.
Why should they be flattered to be on television, exactly?

@Mario You make it sound as though musicians are below television in some way, which is odd. 99% of what is on tv is absolute junk. Why WOULD any musician capable of writing meaningful music be grateful to crap like Glee or American Idol for liking their songs? Okay, there are a few brilliant TV shows (HBO, mostly) and there is meaningless throwaway junk music (Spears, Rihanna, etc) But on the whole, how can one say that television is somehow more respectable than music?

In 20 years, no one is going to give a sh*t about Glee. Foo Fighters albums have a much better chance. And I’m not even really a Foo Fighters fan.

I any case, why would anyone want anything they do to be associated with something they hate? Just to get on tv? ridiculous.

  106. Jovial says:

The best bit of the whole article was the fact that Dave Grohl relayed the whole story of Murphy’s spats with Slash and KoL to Taylor Hawkins and Taylor’s all, “Yeah, F**k that sh*t!” Hilarious!

  107. shealey says:

I Love foo fighters, I just got tickets to see them at the Hangout music festival i cant wait.

  108. Axel says:

Foo-Fighters are probably the most over-rated band in the last 20 years. Their recent stuff is just a re-hash of their early material, and Slash, well if you think he is the greatest, you are just old!

I’m not the biggest fan of Glee, but I think it is pretty good, considering the amount of time they do each episode in. It’s not terrible. These rock stars think they will lose their “Cool” factor if they say they like it, and they can’t have that.

  109. Thanks a lot for sharing this with all folks you really know what you are speaking approximately! Bookmarked. Please also seek advice from my site =). We will have a link alternate arrangement among us
