Britney Spears rejects plea deal in driver’s license case

Boy Britney Spears’ lawyers sure are intent on doing their best to bleed her dry. I don’t even want to imagine the kinds of billable hours she’s racked up in the last year on her dumb traffic court-worthy case. In August of 2007 Britney slammed her car into the side of a parked Mercedes in a parking lot. The whole thing was caught on tape, and Brit was seen getting out of her car and inspecting it thoroughly, while never moving her head four inches to even glance at the other person’s car.

Unfortunately for Brit – and fortunately for everyone else – the car’s owner saw the tape and Britney was arrested and booked for hit-and-run. The case is STILL pending in court – and she has rejected a more than generous plea deal.

An attorney for Britney Spears has rejected a plea offer that would have placed her on a year’s probation and forced her to pay a $150 fine in her misdemeanor driver’s license case.

Attorney J. Michael Flanagan says Spears would consider an offer that reduces the charge to an infraction and requires her to pay a $10 fine. He says if the case does go to trial as scheduled later this month, he will appeal any conviction.

He says the 26-year-old singer is being unfairly targeted because she is a celebrity and doesn’t deserve a blemish on her criminal record.

The charge is the last remnants of a criminal case that city prosecutors lodged against Spears after she hit a parked car in August 2007 and left without notifying the owner.

I appreciate that Britney has done a lot in the last few months in terms of improving her life. However the consequences from having a breakdown don’t just go away because you got better. Part of really improving is taking responsibility for her mistakes, and this was clearly one. It is no one’s fault but Britney’s, and I’m upset she was offered such a ridiculously lenient plea deal. I’m not saying they should lock her up and throw away the key, but there should be more than this. She was an absolute fool to employ this lawyer and a bigger fool for listening to him.

I can’t wait to see what kind of punishment she ends up with.

The plea deal sounds more than generous. I’m not sure about CA, but some states regard hit and run as a felony. She needs to take the plea. As for a $10 fine for an infraction – you get more of a fine for not wearing a seat belt. And it’s not like she can’t afford it. Certainly it would be cheaper than paying her lawyer for one hour of work.

I don’t understand. She hit the car. They caught her on tape hitting the car. So clearly the plaintiff’s got some pretty good evidence on his side.

Anyway, I sympathize with people who lose their licenses for whatever reason. Even though some people absolutely do not deserve and/or really aren’t capable of driving, it still places a huge burden on people who depend on cars to get to work (which is most people if you aren’t lucky enough to live in a city with great public transportation). Traffic tickets suck and can get take a hefty chunk of your paycheck when you’re making minimum wage. Britney Spears, though, can afford a $200 fine and I am sure if she doesn’t already have a driver, she could get one no problem.

Maybe Brit’s mom will write a book about this..

I totally agree with you on this one. This was entirely her fault (unless there’s some evidentiary component the public isn’t hearing about). She ought to be glad she was offered a plea. Most of us would’ve been slammed in jail for this kind of thing. She’s being treated unfairly as a celebrity? Yeah…and Winona Ryder, I suppose, was treated unfairly and used as an example, too, right? Yeah…the crimes they committed were not violent and don’t make them bad people…but they are felonies nonetheless. Trust me, anyone who isn’t famous who steals $5k worth of clothes or rams their car into a Mercedes and doesn’t leave information or contact the owner…yeah, we’re going to jail.

I hope they nail her. I love the idea of a Britney comeback. I like her glittery and successful and gorgeous. But I’m sorry, this kind of responsibility-dodging crap is a great illustration of how “not ready” she is to be on her own.

Britney reminds me of my junkie aunt who would get loaded and then chase after people with knives and sh*t, then wake up the next morning with a smile like nothing had happened. No apologies, no promises to clean up. Because in her mind, she was inebriated when she committed the act so she was excused from any consequences. 🙄

  7. Jeanne says:

Britney never takes responsibility. She only cares about rehabbing herself enough to make $ in the music industry, not the real world. I don’t see her on any talk shows trying to help people with mental illness by telling her story. She’s expecting either her Daddy to clean up her messes or her lawyers. She’s no different than Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan.

  8. MsTriste says:

Maybe it’s all her lawyers’ idea to get more money from her. Either way, she pays somehow.

  9. Lio says:

I believe you are mixing two different stories: she already paid the other driver in the hit and run story. This one is because her driver licence was registered in Louisiana insteads of California

  10. justice says:

this is not about the hit and run its about the license not begin an LA one. Do your research. and on that note, i don’t believe she should be punished, she had a valid Louisiana license.

thats what I thought too Lio

I love ya britney! you look good and screw what these ppl say. 😛

  13. The issue is the validity of the Louisiana licence in the state of California. Yes, new residence are ok to use out of state licences as a visitor. Considering her career takes her out of the state, she might be able to be considered this.
