Evan Rachel Wood in Jill Stuart at ‘The Conspirator’ premiere: chic or fug?

the_conspirator_22_wenn3289337

These are photos from the Washington, D.C. premiere of The Conspirator, the story of what happened immediately after Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theatre. The film stars Robin Wright as Mary Surratt, one of the “conspirators” to the assassination, who was (spoiler) tried and convicted, and then hanged. Robert Redford directed the film, which follows the trial of Mary Surratt. Evan Rachel Wood plays her daughter, and I believe James McAvoy plays Surratt’s lawyer. Anyway, Robin wasn’t at the premiere, but McAvoy, Redford and Wood made it. Guess where the premiere was held? Ford’s Theatre! Where Lincoln was shot, for those who don’t know. According to Page Six, the premiere almost had to be called off because Ford’s Theatre is a federally protected historical site, and the potential government shutdown might have closed it down.

Anyway, Evan Rachel Wood in Jill Stuart. I thought this was vintage at first, but it’s not. It still feels very dated, and I think the fabric is fug as hell… and yet ERW kind of pulls it off.

James was adorable, as always. He’s wearing his favorite pair of jeans – the same ones he’s been wearing for the past six months or so. The boy CANNOT dress. I love it.

Mm… Redford.

Here’s the trailer for The Conspirator. I always thought that Clive Owen should play John Wilkes Booth if they ever made a movie just about Booth. If you look at the old photos, there’s definitely a resemblance.

UPDATE: Robin Wright was at the premiere, I just missed the photos! Whoops, my bad. Here she is in a horribly cut grey suit:

Extremely fug. She tries way too hard, all the time.

And Robin was there Kaiser, there are pics on Getty, wearing an also fug gray suit.

That dress is so ugly it made my eyes bleed. Looks like something Grandma would pick for a “fancy” Thanksgiving dinner. Regardless, ERW could have on the most lovely dress in creation and all I’ll see is someone who got nasty with Marilyn Manson. In my mind, she travels with a big red X across her face.

Fugly librarian dress, even fuglier ponytail.

Seriously, she thought this would be a ‘great’ look for a premiere???

The grey suit is also a mess. What’s going on in HW? Are these people dressing themselves nowadays? Big Mistake!
Someone needs a sytlist and quick!

Robin Wright looks like a drag queen.

Did anyone else watch Mildred Pierce? I spent 3 weeks watching that series and enjoyed it, up until last night, when the ending was totally NOT the way the original story was. I thought that they were doing a remake of Mildred, not some new version with a pointless ending. The whole story was about a murder, and the new version had no murder.

I don’t know, I was very disappointed that they felt the need to change a very good story and water it down in order to add their own twist to it, which in the end was no twist.

I think the dress is fug, but I like it anyway. It’s unique, and those are little foxes on it. It’s ugly, but I like when people make unusual choices, and I honestly think she works it.

@devilgirl, I found the entire thing so boring. I know Kate is a great actress, but all the glowing reviews were just not worth it. A miniseries about some selfish bitchy daughter and her neurotic mother? Who cares. zzzzzzzzzzzz

This is a total 80s working girl vibe, which is on the list of fashion moments that should go away forever. All she needs is blazer with football sized shoulder pads in it.
But I think this chick pulls it off as much as is possible.

I like it. We know what ERW is about, and this is totally up her alley, I love a woman who knows what she’s about and wears it confidently.

@devilgirl the ending of the book “Mildred Pierce” is just like it is in the HBO miniseries. The 1945 movie version added the murder plot, which doesn’t exist in the novel, because the censors back in the day couldn’t handle the real ending which (spoiler alert) involves Mildred finding her daughter in bed with her husband. The HBO version is completely faithful to the original story.

I like the dress. I would wear it, but more to the office rather than to a premiere.
I like her peep-toe shoes too.

The dress looks good, on her. The hair sucks. WTH did RW do to herself. She is such a beauty, why did she cut her hair that way and wear that suit?

That must be a 70′s vintage dress. She is a young, beautiful woman, and that is way too matronly for her to be wearing.

She was so good as a teen actress on the Sela Ward TV show. I thought she would go places. But she has been messed up since she tried to be the dark gothic look with Mariyln Manson and just missteps on her look. She is dressed like my mom going to church. LOL

I hate to say this, Robin looked much older. I know she is older, not a starlet, but I thought her skin was softer looking, less lined before.

ERW is workin this ensemble. I would never choose anything resembling this but she owns it. She’s a beauty.

Poor Robin W. She looks washed out & used up but she will always be the Princess Bride to me.

@Bee- Thanks for the info. I have not read Mildred Pierce, so I was not aware of that fact. I will say, I always had thought the daughter had slept with Monty in the original version. I think the murder actually added something to the story. While the series was good, the ending was a bit dull, IMO.

Both Robin and Evan are wearing “fashion” pieces. I think both are cool, although Evan’s dress totally looks like a dress my Mom wore in 1975. I mean totally. All she needs are the wood soled platform shoes and she’s be right there!

@devilgirl you’re welcome! I also enjoyed the murder plot in the original film because that little viper Veda got what she had coming to her, a jail cell, at the end.

  26. Kezia says:

I’m sorry but how has no one mentioned ERW POSING?? Oh sweet baby Jesus, it’s awful! Every event she goes to she cocks out her leg like that out way too far and looks like a little girl playing dress up in too big heels. She Always does it would one of her people not take her aside and get her a class with somebody who knows how to pose (I don’t know why this drives me so nuts it just does!).

  27. devilgirl says:

@Bee- Exactly! Veda was sooooooo mean, and I thought Evan Rachel Wood, and the girl who played the younger Veda did an excellent job of portraying her. I was really wanting to see Veda led off to the clink in this version. LOL! Maybe that is why I am so disappointed.

  29. Bee says:

    @devilgirl I know! (Spoiler alert)

I was so angry to see Veda just ride off into the sunset at the end! That girl needed to have some hand cuffs slapped on her. Or at least have Mildred finish the job she started when she attacked her. I actually had to restrain myself from cheering when Mildred started strangling Veda (horrible I know). But that psycho deserved it! ERW and the younger actress did do a great job as you said.

  30. Cherry Rose says:

I do not like this girl at all. While I know it takes two to tango, Evan clearly knew that Marilyn Manson was in a 7+ years relationship and also married to Dita von Teese. And she also very clearly went after him, even knowing all this.

Then of course, she tried to turn in a budget version of Dita, which Evan failed at.

And she’s a horrible actress. I wish they’d kill off her character on True Blood, because Evan’s acting sucks. >.<

Don’t like either outfit, ERW’s or Robin’s. I enjoyed Mildred Pierce for Kate Winslet’s performance, but it was frustrating that she was such a doormat to her awful daughter. ERW looked gorgeous in it though.

She can do no wrong. I wouldn’t wear a dress like that, and if I saw it in a shop I would say that it’s fugly as hell, but on her is good.
On the other hand, Robin’s jacket is tragic, the hair too is awful.

I cannot get past her posing and her grimace. Look at that facial expression! The ton of makeup she has on ruins her face and whoever said she needs coaching in how to pose was right. She seems more like a caricature than a real person.

The dress I find oddly compelling. I like the colour scheme. But than again, I don’t think my mom wore that kind of thing in the 70s.
