Jeff Buckley bio-pic is moving forward: who will play Buckley?

jb5

This news made me sick when I read it yesterday. I had a mini-meltdown on Twitter. Until it occurred to me that this news might actually be a biscuit-tingler. We’ll see. Anyway, the news! Hollywood has long been gestating a desire to sh*t on the late Jeff Buckley’s memory by doing some kind of hipster bio-pic. For those who don’t know, Jeff Buckley was an extremely talented singer-songwriter who died tragically at the age of 30. He had the voice of an angel, and oh yeah, he was really, really hot too. And now Hollywood is going to disinter his remains and take a dump on them.

Welcome To The Rileys helmer Jake Scott has been set to direct an untitled film about Jeff Buckley, the rising star musician who died tragically at age 30 in 1997. Scott will direct a script by Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker). Michelle Sy and Orian Williams are producing, and Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert will be exec producer.

Buckley, son of the famed but troubled folk musician Tim Buckley, became an influence on musicians from Kurt Cobain to Coldplay. He shunned the spotlight, though, preferring to play small clubs and who for a long time played as a session guitarist to make a living. He recorded one hit album, Grace, and was on his way to doing another when he jumped into Tennessee’s Wolf River, fully clothed, for a spontaneous swim. He got caught in the wake of a passing boat and drowned.

Music rights to Buckley’s songs are part of the rights package and the producers have also optioned the David Browne book Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley, as a resource. Browne will be a consultant. Development of the project was funded by Houston-based financier Amy Vaughan King, and the producers are currently assembling the film’s financing in anticipation of a fall start. UTA reps Scott, who has directed videos with U2, R.E.M., Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cranberries and others. Jaffe’s repped by WME.

[From Deadline]

This project has been discussed for many, many years, and I always kind of hoped that nothing would ever come of it. It’s just too… too much. Don’t do it. But it’s happening, and now we have to think about casting. The too-obvious choice is James Franco, who, as you can see, looks a great deal like Jeff Buckley. But is that pick too “on the nose”? And would Franco’s prevalent douche sink his chances to play Buckley? One would hope. The second obvious choice is probably Robert Pattinson – he too looks a bit like Buckley, and Sparkles probably has a leg up considering her already plays the guitar and sings (he writes his own music too, right?). Other names that I could see being considered: Andrew Garfield, Joaquin Phoenix, Joseph Gordon Levitt, or even Jared Leto. All terrible ideas.

But my choice is genius, and it’s the only casting choice I will no accept without throwing a massive tantrum: Michael Fassbender as Jeff Buckley! COME ON. Make it happen! They’re both beautiful, they both melt panties, they need to come together in one role and sing directly to me:

So young and so sad. Hope if they do make a movie it isn’t crappy.

  2. Vivian says:

Jim Sturgess would be a good fit!!

  3. X says:

The Fassbender is hot; but he’s too old for the role, doll. He can’t pull off the Buckley.

  4. Eve says:

    Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

  5. ruru says:

I reckon James Ransone (the guy who played Ziggy Sobotka on “The Wire”) looks a bit like Jeff Buckley. He has indie cred too.

  6. Giz says:

    James Franco

  7. Addie says:

Don’t really know who he was, but he was a cutey.

Non of these look enough like him to play him. He looks a little like Josh Groban

  8. Ja says:

Every biopic about a really talented musician ended up being really crap whatever the intentions. Joy Division springs to mind…

  9. kiki says:

Please, please, let it NOT be James Franco. He’s far too swarmy and greasy to play Buckley. The only ones on that list that make any sense at all are Pattinson and Gordon-Levitt. If they are going to make this film, and I wish they wouldn’t, my vote’s for Aaron Johnson.

  10. khaveman says:

Wow it’s total Coldplay vocals, the song “So Real.” Chris Martin is practically imitating Buckley? So similar.

  11. liz says:

Yep, James Franco is the only one who could handle this. Visually and dramatically. Even if he has been over-exposed lately…

  12. Solveig says:

My heart skipped a beat when I saw Jeff here…
I knew it was coming, it’s like 6 years or more that HW is trying to make a movie on JB, and I’m not happy about that.
What upsets me the most is Jeff’s mother, Mary Guibert. I feel quite guilty badmouthing this woman (I met her and Michael Tighe in Rome in 1998), but I think she’s greedy: since she’s been in charge of Jeff recordings many – useless – albums have been published, even ‘Sketches for my sweetheart the drunk’: the rabid fans of him know that he wanted to set the tapes on fire as soon as the band reached him in Memphis… He didn’t wanted to publish ‘What will you say’, either. But unfortunately he died and he can’t do what he wanted with his music.
Anyway, to me he’s still one of the most talented chanteurs of the last 20 years, and a talented guitarist.
Well, if they have to make this movie, James Franco is the best choice. I’ve always thought he was suitable as Jeff.

Ps: it is unlikely that Cobain was influenced by Buckley (unless we are talking about Tim): Kurt died on April 1994, Jeff released his first EP (Live at Sin-é) on November 1993. As far as I know, Jeff claimed that Cobain influenced him.

  13. latam says:

please dont let it be james franco. Andrew garfield? or…sparkles?

  14. gobo says:

Hmmm. Fassbender and Franco are (don’t shoot me) a bit too worn in the face for this role and sparkles is too… distinctive looking.

  15. TQB says:

Gah, the odds of this not sucking are so small. But I could trust Gordon-Levitt. Still, uneasy about the whole idea.

@Solveig, interesting. These posthumous releases are so troubling for fans. I get that he never wanted me to hear it, but in the absence of ever getting any more Buckley, I love Sketches.

  16. TQB says:

And please, please, PLEASE NO FRANCO. Just because he looks like him does not mean he’s right to play him!

  17. Bodhi says:

I am seriously going to cry if/when Hollywood screw this up.

I LOVE Jeff Buckley. I was 15 when he died & it was earth shattering for me…

  18. Mimi says:

It is times like this that really make me miss Heath Ledger. I think he would have really nailed this role. But I def think that James would be a solid choice to play Buckley. But I’m a huge France fan so…

  19. mln76 says:

Oh gosh this takes me back I remember the day he died I was in college and unlike with Cobain although I was devastated almost no one knew who he was. It’s so sad that today there is so much of his type of music is now done with so much less beauty and soul (I am looking at you John Mayer). I agree with Fassbender as the only person who has his looks and charisma. My other suggestion is Sam Taylor-Wood because at least has the talent I honestly just don’t want them to do a biopic.

  20. Bodhi says:

I love me some Franco & I think he might do a good job; he is a wonderful actor after all, but it would be awesome if the producers could find someone more under the radar.

  21. Jillian says:

I love Jeff. Thanks for posting this.

  22. mia girl says:

I’m so glad you posted this. I’ve listened to Buckley’s voice for so long that I feel it is part of my brain! Lots of good names being suggested by all of you (I like the Jim Sturgess idea) and one important name being rejected (Franco NO!).

But, given who was just named as director, I think Pattinson just got a leg up on everyone. Jake Scott is really close with Kristen Stewart (from Welcome to the Rileys) so Sparkles may have an inside track. I think he can do a good job. He plays/sings pretty evocatively.

  23. Solveig says:

@TQB, I understand what you say, and I too love Sketches, but everytime I listen to it I feel like I’m reading the secret diary of a shy person.

  24. endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo (sip of coffee) ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  25. Trillion says:

Bodhi, I’m with you. CANNOT hear his music w/out feeling profoundly sad. We were all robbed. Father suicided and had a promising career as well. Fassbender is too old. So is Franco. I think Garfield is a good choice physically.

  26. meg says:

“And now Hollywood is going to disinter his remains and take a dump on them.”

Isn’t that all they do now? I swear, I get closer and closer to boycotting American films all together.

  27. Ashley Temple says:

” Make it happen! They’re both beautiful, they both melt panties, they need to come together in one role and sing directly to me” You are out of control, but I’m loving every minute of it, of course.

  28. melinda says:

Oh god, I hope Elliot Smith isn’t next.

  29. mln76 says:

@melinda please don’t even say that.

  30. buckley says:

    aww my beloved…
I’ve often wished they wouldnt do a biopic on him because no one can do Jeff justice. That said, Franco can probably do well but he’s starting to look much older than Jeff.

  31. tiredofrumers says:

diego boneta is young and doesn’t look unlike him… tho i’ve only seen him on pretty little liars & 90210…

  32. Yaya says:

I’m excited but I think that Franco should not play Jeff but Jeff’s father instead, they look so alike!

I would cast a young unknown actor to play Jeff – someone who looks alike and is able to sing. I can’t really see anyone famous who could do him justice. I’m afraid that Pattinson is going to overshadow Jeff because he’s such a teenage heartthrob and Jeff was, sadly, a very low-profile artist.

Heath Ledger would be ideal but it’s not going to happen unfortunately…

  33. Ally says:

My heart sank when I saw the headline. Just let Jeff Buckley’s music stand alone.

Also, after Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, I’m amazed anyone had the nerve to attempt this shopworn genre again. (He took drugs! He slept with girls! He met cool people! The audience loved him! And then he died.) I hope the project just goes into development turnaround again. Ditto any Nick Drake movie.

Tim Buckley’s music is amazing, too, and well worth purchasing the albums. His voice is even more pure and gorgeous than his son’s. Tim B’s live recordings fill me with awe, e.g. “I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain”. And “Buzzin’ Fly” is probably my favorite song of all time:

  34. original kate says:

james franco is way too skeevy to play JB. they should find an unknown to play him. and yes, i agree with above poster (#8) about the joy division movie – i was very disappointed by it. i keep hearing there is a movie about nick drake in the works. anyone know about that?

  35. padiddle says:

I’ve always loved Jeff, don’t think Franco or Sparkles look remotely like him, neither has the ability to play him. I know people are all over Franco and think he is a good actor, but I think the Spiderman movies easily disprove that notion. IMHO of course.
The person who suggested PJ Ransone (the guy who played Ziggy on the Wire) is spot on – likely the indie community would embrace him as well, and he can actually act. I would probably never watch this just because they are so going to overdramatize everything about Jeff’s life, but if it was Ransone I would consider.

  36. mln76 says:

Franco can act but I don’t think he can manufacture the vulnerability also I don’t want Buckley’s legacy to be disrespected as part of Franco’s side show/juggling act/insanity.

  37. normades says:

Jim Sturgess has a great voice but does a terrible American accent. I vote GJL who has the sensitivity and the musical chops to pull it off.

And yes, I’m sure the Elliot Smith film is next 🙁

  38. Cicilla says:

I have two options based on physical appearance only:
    A) Devendra Banhart
    B) Fabrizio Moretti

  39. melinda says:

@normades- I’m afraid they have far too much room to make an Elliot Smith movie extra awful and disrespectful to his memory with all the theories about how he was murdered. Why can’t they let these men just rest in peace?

  40. Jeri says:

    Joseph Gordon Levitt

  41. z says:

Brendan Fehr looks the part, but he’s also too old now. (Further, not sure his dramatic acting’s up to snuff…)

  42. harfang says:

Franco looks the most like him, but with any luck, that kid will never work again.

  43. LadyLupton says:

Yeah, my heart sank too when I read the headline. This film should not be made, but if it’s got to be (and Heath Ledger isn’t around to do it) then an unknown should play Jeff.

Franco and Fassbender are too old. End of.

But then again, if it gets people listening to Jeff’s music, then perhaps that’s not such a bad thing. An X-factor (or some such show) winner here in the UK covered Hallelujah, and though it was torturous and traumatic to any Buckley (of Cohen for that matter) fan, it did introduce Jeff to a new generation. Silver lining?

  44. emma says:

Pattinson seems like the perfect fit but it would have to be years after Twilight is over and with a good cast and director.

  45. mln76 says:

@emma I like Rob I do but he isn’t up to the task of the role of Jeff Buckley it would be a total dis to his loyal fans.

  46. esblondie says:

I can totally see Joseph Gordon Levitt, or Jason Lee. I always thought they kind of looked alike anyway…

  47. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Blech, don’t do it.

  48. Mairead says:

@ Ja – I actually quite enjoyed “Control”. It had that 80s Mike Leigh aesthetic that suited the period and subject, and I thought Sam Riely was very good.

As for the subject at hand, I do think that Franco is the most appropriate choice out of the list above, and a few facials will get him looking young again (either that or find Jared Leto’s fountain of youth because Jordan Catalano isn’t looking a day older!)
Or the lovely JGL would have a nice soft touch for this role.

Or just get Michael Sheen to do it – he’s been in every other bloody biopic going. I hear he’s going to be the next Linda Lovelace! 🙄 😉

  49. Confuzzle says:

Dear god there’s a lot of fug on this page.

I’d cast Ziggy from The Wire too.

  50. Chris says:

Sam Riley, who played Ian Curtis in Control, would be worth audtioning too.

  51. CeeCee says:

let the sweet, beauty and grace (no pun intended) of Jeff Buckley rest in peace without some Hollywood twat pretending to be him in a movie. No one today come close to the raw, boundless talent he was.

  52. LBeees says:

Billy Crudup out from left field! He has the intensity, the smoking hot eyes, etc. So delicate and beautiful. Plus I always love him in Almost Famous, and he played a rocker in that.

I can’t believe Almost Famous came out over a DECADE AGO. I’m SO OLD holy fuck. I need another romantic, heart-achy film to watch, so I say bring it on.

  53. Solveig says:

Wow, 51 comments on a thread about Jeff. 🙂

What worries me at this point is not who’s going to portray Jeff, but who’s gonna be the director. I know nothing about this Ryan Jaffe, I don’t know his work, his sensibility, nothing.
In ‘Control’s case at least I knew Corbjin’s previous works and although I wasn’t excited about that movie, eventually it wasn’t totally bad (quite pretentious sometimes, but not bad), and Sam Riley too was good enough as Ian (he’s a musician too).
I can only hope that the movie is going to be some sort of indie, delicate, intimate film, something like “The exploding girl”.
By the way, Mark Rendall (actor in “The exploding girl”) would be a perfect Jeff Buckley: same happy/sad eyes, same smile, just perfect.

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1557365504/nm0719321

Ps: let’s really hope that Elliott is not going to be the next.

  54. Emily says:

If they have to do this… Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mmm. and he’s got a pretty good voice and can play guitar.

  55. ordinarygirl86 says:

I was thinking either JGL, Aaron Johnson (from Kick-Ass but I think he already played Lennon so maybe not), Joe Anderson (from Across the Universe), or the last choice douchey Franco!

  56. normades says:

    Oops, I meant JGL!

  57. Mary Jane says:

While I am thrilled at the idea of an original movie coming out of Hollywood,
    THIS.IS.JUST.WRONG.

  58. matt says:

    Jason Lee!!!!

  59. Forelithe says:

I don’t know if I could stand to lose Jeff twice. But if it must be so… I agree with Vivian re: Jim Sturgess he has a good voice, Joe Anderson would be a good choice as well. GJL ?? Yes if he can sing.

  60. Alma says:

I love him. I think a Bio-pic as long as its done right will be great. please not Robert Pattinson, it would be about him not jeff.
