Actresses speak out on who they’re voting for

Last August, Angelina Jolie was criticized for not choosing a presidential candidate to support. Roseanne Barr tore her a new one for not supporting Barack Obama and ripped in to Angelina’s father Jon Voight for supporting John McCain.

This month, Angelina indicated her support may be leaning toward Obama but she still isn’t committed. However, Brad Pitt was seen bicycling around New Orleans with a notebook with Obama’s picture on it.

Why is this important? Will knowing who Angelina or Roseanne or even Heidi Montag is voting for sway my vote? Not in the slightest. In fact, stars are often criticized when they do speak out on political issues.

For those who do care who the stars are voting for, the November issue of Glamour asks three actresses who they’re voting for and why.

Glamour points out that 40 percent of single women didn’t vote in the last presidential election. If a star doesn’t influence how people vote, hopefully it will influence people to actually cast a vote. I live in Florida, home of the infamous hanging chads, so I know the importance one vote can make.

Kerry Washington, star of Ray and Lakeview Terrace is voting for Barack Obama.

I know how necessary and important change has been in our nation’s history. His leadership throughout his career has illuminated his conviction that change happens from the bottom up — not the top down. He believes in the power of the American people and is willing to work within both a grassroots and global framework to ensure that our democracy represents ‘we the people’ — every single one of us. I believe, as does he, that we must start to act like a ‘United’ States, committed to providing all Americans with equal access to health care, housing, education, economic stability and environmental health.

[From Glamour, print edition, November 2008]

Angie Harmon, star of Women’s Murder Club and Law & Order, is voting for John McCain.

In my opinion this election is not Democrat versus Republican or black versus white. It is simply between a man that is experienced and qualified to run this country and a man that is not.

[From Glamour, print edition, November 2008]

Gwyneth Paltrow, star of Iron Man and Shakespeare in Love, is also voting for Barack Obama.

It is crucial that we elect a president who will make women’s health a priority. For his entire career, Barack Obama has stood up for women in this way. John McCain has not. McCain has voted against requiring insurance to cover birth control, and he’s opposed funding for education about emergency contraception (EC). McCain has voted against what is best for women’s health 125 times! This year I’ll be voting for a champion of women’s health care, and a champion for my daughter’s future.

[From Glamour, print edition, November 2008]

Hollywood is predominantly liberal, but it interesting to see what the stars feel is important in a candidate, from health care to international relations. It’s also a relief to see stars’ comments with correct punctuation and capitalization, unlike the celebrities like Roseanne who blog. However, at the end of the day, stars are here to entertain, not lecture, so now that Gwyneth has had her say, it’s time for her to get back to making Iron Man 2.

  3. Yeah, I don’t really care one way or the other who most celebrities “endorse” - but I’m always interested in hearing about a celebrity’s “cause” and I found Dame Paltrow’s plea for women’s health very interesting.

    And I’m voting for Obama.

  7. These celebrities just don’t get it. They are paid monkeys whose job is to come out of their cages and (hopefully) entertain us with their movies, music, etc. Then its back in the cage for you. No one gives a crap about their political views.

  25. Maybe you think it’s naieve, smiley, but think about it this way: the man is ANCIENT, and being president is a very stressful job. Before term and after term photos of presidents will show you that. Considering his age and how stressful the job is, not to mention the situation we’re in with the economy and Iraq, I definitely think the man is at risk of dying in office.

I don’t have so much of a problem with McCain, honestly, it’s his running mate that I absolutely hate.

  26. Though McCain’s had 4(?) operations for skin cancer, his general health is apparently good. I’d be more worried about him be offed by some wackadoo Palinite who doesn’t think McCain is ‘conservative’ enough (which, by the way, is precisely why she’s on the ticket. The fundamentalist lunatic fringe holds a lot of sway )just to put her in the driver’s seat.

Last night debate was a wake up call when I realize that one candidate was saying he favors taking away a woman’s rights to decide and have control over her own body.
The other candidate was saying let women have have the same rights as men to make decisions about their own body.
Also equal pay for women - one candidate actually voted against that.

  47. I have a master’s degree and I seriously considered McCain, because I prefer his position on Iraq, trade (Obama is too protectionist) and agricultural policies - Obama supports ethanol, which is how he won over those corn farmers in Iowa, folks. I believe ethanol distorts the world food markets and takes food away from people who need it.

Eventually, I chose Obama because I think he has a larger talent pool to deal when it comes to economic advisers - the Republicans have pretty much exhausted their pool over the past 8 years. That said, the policies that created the credit crisis were largely (Clinton Treasury Secretary) Robert Rubin’s idea, and I have a feeling he’ll be back.

I chose Obama in spite of his obnoxious supporters, who seem to think that anyone who disagrees with them or their candidate is stupid, evil, or racist. Apparently the left’s concept of “tolerance” only extends to people who share their beliefs.

Obama want’s to raise taxes for the wealthy, has discussed a National HIV Plan for the United States ( I am a New Yorker 1 in 70 New Yorkers have HIV/AIDS) BELIEVE IN TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT SAFE SEX, which if maybe- Senator Palin believed in ideas such as those maybe just maybe… her daughter would not be pregant, we live in a time where womens rights are being undermined, and the choices we make today will affect us for many years to come, I need the right to have a choice. Obama has talked about Healthcare being a right. And if one thinks about that- its true, hundreds of people become ill and die because they can not afford healthcare and in America that is an atrocity. For these reasons and so many others Obama is the clear choice. This November I strongly urge you to vote, I know that alot of women read this site and statistically speaking women don’t vote as much as men and that is a shame, it is your duty as an American to participate in this country’s politic’s.
