Director Matthew Vaughn denies paternity of January Jones’s baby

61750pcn_jones03

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: January Jones’ pregnancy is the best living blind item of the year. At this point, theories and blind items and unnamed-source quotes are all coexisting together, feeding off of each other, egging each other on. As soon as “sources” began floating the theory that January was knocked up WHILE on the set of X-Men: First Class, BY someone working on the film, the baby daddy drama got even more awesome/terrible, because of the possibilities of a Fassbender Junior or McAvoy Junior.

Then came an important clue (that may or may not have been true): January’s alleged baby daddy not only worked on X-Men, but he was and is married. The possibilities were limited even further by that idea/theory, until almost everybody agreed that the best, most reasonable THEORY for baby daddy was director Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn is married to Claudia Schiffer. They have kids and tons of money and respectability and IF Vaughn is the father of January‘s baby, it will be a major scandal in Britain, and a pretty interesting gossip story in America. That being said, we do not know if Vaughn is the father. It really is just a theory, an untested hypothesis, and none of us really have anything to back it up.

This is the predicament that E! News found themselves in yesterday. Everybody is whispering “Matthew Vaughn something something January Jones” under their breath, and E! News stepped up and tried to make it into a legit entertainment news story, documenting the alleged sketchiness surrounding Vaughn, Schiffer and Jones. E! news published their initial story yesterday, then they put up an update after they got a call from Vaughn’s lawyers, then E! just pulled the story completely. Thankfully, I had it saved! Here’s the full story, with the lawyer-approved update:

When Mad Men star January Jones announced she was pregnant April 28, everybody started asking: Who’s the dad? Nobody—January, in particular—is talking. On the record, that is.

Off the record, several sources from January’s new film, X-Men: First Class, directed by Claudia Schiffer’s British husband, Matthew Vaughn, say odd happenings occurred on the set, including a “very close” relationship with Jones.

Did they have an affair, and is Matthew January’s baby daddy? Reps for January and Matthew aren’t saying. But here’s what we do know:

According to multiple knowledgeable X-Men sources, Vaughn and Schiffer, who were renting a house on Foothill Road in Beverly Hills, “abruptly” left town at roughly the same time Jones made her surprise baby announcement in April, even though the couple was tentatively scheduled to stay on through May.

“[Matthew] told us something about their house being renovated and they needed to get back,” says a top-level X-Men source, who was directly involved in editing the summer flick, which opens June 3.

However, a representative for both Schiffer and Vaughn says the departure was not only always planned, but, also due to their children’s school schedule, and that finishing up the mutant-franchise flick was unaffected. Another source on the film confirms that Vaughn’s travel schedule doesn’t seem to have adversely affected the film’s scheduled opening.

But this is where things get weirder:

Both the Vaughn/Schiffer rep, as well as another production source (Fox, which is releasing the sequel, would not comment) said there would be no X-Men premiere, other than a “cast screening” in New York, which took place yesterday—January, among several other cast members, did show for the screening.

But the rep tells us Matthew could not attend the New York screening because of a “severe” case of tonsillitis.

Miraculously, though, Mr. Vaughn still seemed quite the chatty Cathy for X-Men interviews on the same day. His health seemed to be in tip-top shape, as the Brits would say.

Also healthy was Vaughn’s time spent with Jones on set, say our X-Men insiders. Multiple sources from the set insist Jones and Vaughn were “very close” throughout shooting, as we have stated.

To which the Schiffer/Vaughn spokeswoman replied: “Matthew had a very good working relationship with all the actors during the making of this film.”

Something’s not adding up here, and it’s not just Vaughn’s dubious throat.

UPDATE: Legal counsel for Matthew Vaughn strongly denies that his client had an affair with January Jones, or is the father of her expected child. We’re also assured Mr. Vaughn does currently have laryngitis.

[From E! News]

This got pulled, and my guess is that E! News is on notice from Vaughn’s lawyers (once again, just a THEORY). So, how do you read this? I think the denial of the affair and the paternity is interesting, and now I kind of wonder if Vaughn and his lawyers would have even bothered to deny it if they thought there was even a slim possibility that he was the father. Or maybe they wouldn’t have denied if they didn’t have faith that January Jones was going to keep her mouth shut?

Interestingly enough, January bump and the paternity questions have now taken center stage during the promotion of X-Men: First Class. Even The Bacon had to field questions about paternity! Please God, don’t let it be The Bacon.

I’m in 2 minds about this – either it’s someone so completely unknown that even his mother would have trouble picking him out of a line-up and JJ is just milking this poor kid for all the publicity she can get, or it’s someone mindblowing like Obama or Justin Bieber. If it’s Matthew Vaughan (meh) I think she’s gonna wait until after the movie then do a sympathetic-but-still-bitchy, “I’m sooo hot I ‘stole’ a guy from Claudia-frickin’-Schiffer, then he told me he loved me, but he lied!!” tell-all in People magazine.

Ick on the cut of that dress! Dresses with the hem rising to the crotch seem to be in vogue, but it gives the illusion of heavy legs. Even on a girl (like January, who could pass for anorexic) it makes her legs look heavy. Her legs are certainly are not at all heavy. I think that’s why she keeps trying to pose with one leg behind the other. It’s universally unflattering. Atrocious.

I am guilty of it at times too, but this is a prime example of “hey, its just gossip”. Easy to forget that the people we gossip about -and their families -sometimes have to deal with the impact of that gossip. Once its out there, that gossip is hard to take back, even if it turns out to be wrong. If Vaughn isn’t the father, there will still be people convinced he is. He can’t win. If he denies he is the father, some will claim that he proves he is. If doesn’t, others will say, hey he must be because he hasn’t said anything.

I don’t know why the denial is a red flag. 95% of gossip is false or really exaggerated. If I was falsely accused of getting a woman pregnant I would issue a quick denial too before everybody starts reporting and believing it. Why cause his family unnecessary pain? January hasn’t denied any of the rumors of who the father is so I don’t see why not denying it’s the director means it is him. I get the feeling that January doesn’t know who it is or is just embarrassed about him. People keep naming celebrities but it could just as easily be some random guy nobody know about.

  50. mike says:

I think people here have this unreasonable hatred of JJ. Here’s the thing. She’s not being sketchy with her non-denials, but only smart.

She has had two choices: either say the baby daddy’s name or not say anything. For whatever reason, perhaps baby daddy doesn’t want it known, the name is being kept secret. We just don’t know why, so blaming her for keeping it secret is rather asinine.

So if it’s secret, then it would be stupid and idiotic for her to start selectively denying someone. If she denied it was Vaughn, for example, then either she must deny for everyone else, or she’ll make everyone else miserable with extra scrutiny. It’s far better for her and everyone else to simply not comment on any one of them.

It’s either give up the baby daddy or stay silent. Selectively denying is the worst and the stupidest option.

If the baby daddy is married she’s being paid to keep quiet and if he’s a nobody then it’s in her best interest to keep the mystery and fan the famewhore flames. However, if it isn’t n the director OR if is but she’s being paid to deny paternity then I think she should make a statement freeing him and his famiky bc it is unfair to drag the wife and kids through this mess.

Just an interesting observation… Kaiser does a good job above in talking about how one blind feeds another piece of gossip that feed another piece and before you know it, everyone is taking gossip as truth.

Funny enough, with the selection of one specific picture above, Kaiser unintentionally gave more credence to the idea that McAvoy might be the father. Three or four people have now made that conclusion based on how he is standing in the photo, appearing to try to distance himself from JJ. Others might read this and say, yea, you know what, maybe. And then viola! McAvoy rumors start.

But as other have also pointed out, McAvoy was amazingly friendly to JJ in the Today interview, sat next to her and even touched Jones in the Today interview, which is the exact opposite of what is being concluded from the picture.

It is amazing how powerful a blog like this can be (just by posting a mere photo) and to see in action, how we all by sharing our thoughts here, have a role to play in the gossip game!

  55. jenni says:

People harrassing January Jones with public speculation re the baby daddy is gross. It’s also premature. Not every pregnancy even ends in a live baby. Once Jones declined to answer, there’s the hint to quit asking. Go find the answers to world peace or the common cold instead.
Eliminating men as the father just because people are speculating on it is playing a game she should not play b/c that causes more speculation. (Ah, she didn’t say it WASN’T fill-in-the-blank”!) If any of these married men are the baby daddy I feel sorry for the wife. But it’s the husband’s job to tell his wife- not Jones’ job.
Repeatedly asking a woman how she got pregnant is sordid as it’s demanding knowledge of somebody’s sex life. That’s creepy. People are so bossy with pregnant women. There are many reasons it may be in a woman’s best interest to keep a father’s identity private, sometimes for safety reasons. It’s her business and the child’s business. Disparaging a woman’s character for it doesn’t make sense because you don’t know details.

I hate men who cheat and I will never understand how people can blame the woman when her husband has lied to and cheated on her. That being said – just because you are a super-model that doesn’t make you perfect. Men don’t cheat because their significant other isn’t pretty enough (ahem Arnold!) they cheat because their needs aren’t being met – whether it is rational or not. You may give and give in bed to a man but if he is insatiable he will still cheat no matter what you do. Also, if you belittle a man, no matter how beautiful you are, he will probably cheat to build up his self-esteem. I’m not saying this is right, I am just stating the facts. The Christie Brinkleys and Claudia Schiffers are not above being cheated on just because they are beautiful. And many many less than gorgeous women have been able to keep a man satisfied and true!

Just read this on the NY Post:
“Lawyers for “X-Men” director Matthew Vaughn, husband of Claudia Schiffer, described an online story suggesting he had a relationship with the movie’s star, January Jones, and could be the father of her unborn child as an “absolute lie.” Powerhouse attorney Martin Singer told us there was no truth in the E! report that Schiffer’s husband had a “very close relationship” on-set with Jones, who last month announced she was pregnant, but has not confirmed the identity of the daddy.”

It’s JJ turn to come to the aide of her director and back him up on this. We’ll see if that happens. My guess is no. Hey Vaughn, Hell knows no fury…

  61. Devon says:

@GiGi They had to do reshoots in late January which would have been around the time that she got pregnant.

She announced at the end of April and at that time she would have been more than 3 months pregnant. A late April announcement definitely fits into a late January/early February conception date. She’d broken up with Jason Sudekis in early January so I think that eliminates him as the baby daddy. Matthew Vaughn is the only one out of the possible BDs that has issued a denial…the [man] doth protest too much, methinks. He’s lawyered up with Marty Singer all of a sudden and there is just the shadiness of CS’s weight loss, their sudden departure of the US & holding interviews while claiming tonsillitis or laryngitis. January hasn’t come to his defence saying that he’s not the father which is just more fuel to the fire. You’d think if he wasn’t bitch would pipe up and say “Nope, sorry! Try again.” She’s loving this as it’s gotten her more press than she could ever imagine.

Where there is smoke there is usually fire and I’m not saying that it is him but all signs point to yes.

EDIT: @jenni: why in the heck would you say that “not all pregnancies end in live births”? That’s kind of harsh. While it may be true, I have a friend who carried to term and had a stillborn baby, it’s not something you should be saying. It’s just mean. I know what we’re all doing here isn’t what I’d call nice but that was mean. It reminds me of my witch of a grandmother (dad’s mum) who, while my mum was pregnant with me, told my mum not to get too excited because she had 3 stillborn kids back in the 40s. My mum’s mother also had a stillborn. It’s just not nice.

  62. Audrey says:

To all those posters that are asking why would a man cheat when he has Claudia, or any other beautiful woman…it’s because men crave variety. Doesn’t matter that they have the most beautiful woman waiting for them at home – even Cindy Crawford’s husband got bored waking up to her every day. It’s a primal desire to “spread seed”. However, men should be above this and when in a monogamous relationship, stay monogamous. Unfortunately, women will blame themselves because they think they aren’t thin enough, pretty enough, etc. which is complete nonsense.

EDIT: @ Devon – I reread @jenni’s comment and it didn’t sound like she was saying anything mean, just stating a fact.

I’m with mike. I’m responding to this as a person who grew up in a single parent family so I absolutely cringe at seeing this situation progress from ‘I wonder who the father is’ to ‘I’m entitled to know who the father is’. And if you think that pestering peters out after the delivery, you’re either stupid or lying. Harsh comment? I say no, seeing as how I’m right and all. I was in my twenties before every Tom, Dick and Jermajesty would stop prying–and for what? And God forbid you don’t feel like submiting a dissertation to everyone you meet in order to justify and apologize for my existence, there must be scandal there!

I was semi-following this story before, but I was recently reminded that I kind of don’t care and don’t have irrefutable proof about who did what and whom. Let’s say there was misconduct on J.J.’s part, I hope the gavel bangers who despair over the drubbing received by the unmarried women while the married man gets off scot-free won’t lose themselves in the foaming.

I mean, why does Schiffer look so thin? I don’t know, maybe she’s a model, maybe she has colitis. Why hasn’t she brushed her teeth since 1994? Who the hell needs to see another superhero movie? I don’t know, go ask the walls of Jericho, Joshua. How could anyone not Bobby Flay? A secret more ancient than gravy itself. What does January Jones do with herself between SNL gigs? I get the sense that it’s better that we don’t know. Still, it’s all speculation even if something looks likely. I don’t know, they don’t owe us anything, vote with you cinema money if it bothers you.

@Devon- I’m sorry – definitely not my intention to be insenstive. I work with pregnant women and I feel like people forget. It’s all “baby bump!” in the pop culture. But it really can be premature as I’ve seen repeatedly. If I know a woman personally, I am always positive about her pregnancy and pregnancy outcome, absolutely. But I just feel like there’s this insensitivity (in the public sphere) to the realities, sometimes fragile-ness, about pregnancy and how it is not promised. And this presumptuous attitude is harsh on the woman who suffers a loss. There’s a certain sense of dignity (from the public as well) I feel like pregnant women should be given which promotes a healthy pregnancy and healthy outcome for their baby and promotes a good postpartum period as well, which is also a physically and emotionally vulnerable time for both mother and child. And this type thing re January Jones- I’ve seen her once only on “Mad Men,” its not like I am a fan, but I have an instinctive protectiveness toward pregnant women. Jones will hopefully, and most likely deliver a beautiful and healthy baby. But certainly women can lose their babies at any stage in their pregnancy. I think it’s important to remember, becasue it promotes sensitivity and perhaps kindness toward women in what is actually a vulnerable time physically, emotionally, which also affects their child. Anyway Sorry if I sounded harsh or insensitive, it wasn’t my intention, it was actually the opposite of my intention, as I was trying to promote more sensitivity. But I can see how it could sound harsh or uncaring.

If Matthew Vaughn is not the father she should say so, publicly. If doing so would just implicate someone else, then she should at least speak to Vaughn’s wife in private. Claudia looks like she’s stressed out over something, that’s for sure.

@ Lisa – LOL! That was BRILLIANT!

@ Crash, Eve – completely agree! This would go away if it wasn’t kept a secret, but the speculation not only draws attention to her but unfortunately, to people who are NOT involved but they/their families are paying for someone else’s indiscretion.

It seems to me that James M. is keeping a respectful distance – likely because he knows that even the most authentic of interactions is going to end up with speculation that he was involved with her and he is trying to balance a (possible) friendship with protecting his family from gossip, non?

This whole story reminds of that joke about a girl who is pregnant but doesn’t know who her baby’s father is. After being asked about by her father and not being able to give him an answer, he locks her in her bedroom saying she can only leave if she can come up with at least a small number of possible names.

She spends some hours thinking about it and then announces she narrowed the number of possible candidates to only two. Her father is glad about that and asks again who are they. She answers: “the possible father is either someone from my school’s football or baseball teams”.

Men do NOT cheat because their needs are NOT being met!!!! That is a lie. You can sex them as much as they want. Do back flips from the chandlier. If it is his internal character flaw. A morally bankrupt decision to lie, be deceptive, and unfaithful then that is what he will do.
Saying that his needs are not being met is puting the onus on the woman and that is WRONG. It is like saying if the woman was prettier or skinnier they wouldnt cheat and we all know that is not true.

She could just go the Minnie Driver route and give a small statement about the father without reveling who he is.

Instead, like so many have said, she is helping to fan the flames of public interest over her, because really who was paying attention to her before? Hendricks and Ham are the two cast members from that show getting all the attention, while she was just another boring blonde whose only interesting fact about her was she once dated Ashton Kutcher (sp?).

If it really is a married man then why should we be so sensitive about her “well-being”? She got herself into that situation.

She may smile and enjoy the attention now but I doubt anyone will hire her in the future knowing that she’s a skank. Most producers, directors, actors have wives and they will hate seeing her near their husbands. Her “career” is over.

As a general rule, I think she has every right to keep the father a secret. But she has so very obviously MADE this into an issue that I feel no guilt whatsoever in engaging in endless speculation about it. She was on the verge of being totally forgetten, with MM on a long hiatus and shiny stars like Jennifer Lawrence in the XMen movie. She’s played her womb into a career resurgence.

Thanks – I read that E article too before it was removed. If I was Claudia I’d be very very angry x 10, regardless of whether Vaughan is the father or not. Maybe JJ just really really wanted a baby without the hassle of a relationship. I’d suggest she’s being paid a lot of money by the father to keep quiet. Not sure the X-Men PR team had this in mind for their promotion schedule for the movie.

I do think JJ could have earned some privacy if she’d merely said, “The father is not married, and is not a celebrity or otherwise in the public eye.”

Sure, someone may have kept digging, but it might have kept the speculation down to a murmur. In addition, she’s had an awful lot of recent public appearances and random photo ops where the paparazzi just happen to catch her strolling on a residential street, like she gave them a buzz to tip them off. Finally, the lead-in to the E! story could be read to suggest that JJ’s people are anonymously feeding the Vaughn angle.

Her smirk and ubiquity suggest to me that Vaughn was told and bailed on her. She has a defiant look, like a woman who thought her married boyfriend meant it when he said he loved her and wanted a family with her. Maybe she likes seeing him sweat?

  85. mike says:

    C’mon people. Use your head.

She can’t fess up because then she’ll have to fess up to everyone else.

Say she denies Vaughn. If she does, then she can’t stop until the tabloids eventually get the right person or she ends up being a liar.

I see a lot of people don’t think McAvoy is the dad, yet all the spotlight will be on him if she denies Vaughn. And if she denies McAvoy, then the tabs will find a new guy, then another new guy, the next guy, etc, until she finally cracks.

After all, if she denies Vaughn, people will ask why can’t she deny McAvoy, unless McA is the dad? And so on with every other guy.

It is the smart thing to not say anything. Plus, lying is no good, because if she lies and the truth ever comes out, she’ll look like a fool and I bet the dad will throw her under the bus to save his marriage or just to get a better deal in a divorce.

This is looking pretty bad for Vaughn…

I don’t think McAvoy has anything to do with it.
And yes his package is enticing.

I’m baffled at how many of you think Claudia Schiffer is beautiful, I don’t think she’s very special, and I think she looks positively skeletal and sick in the above picture (check out her neck and chest, yikes), as well as other pictures I’ve seen here in. (Though maybe she is losing weight due to stress about the possible affair?)

And for those comments about men cheating on beautiful women? Cheating often times has nothing to do with that, not that I’m justifying it whatsoever.

I agree with some of the previous comments. I think she has the right not to tell the world who the baby’s father is without having her character attacked. I too was raised by a single mom, and while there’s a certain kid of gossip that’s fun, this is starting to reach a strange level of daddy/male obsession, shut up single woman scorn.

You can tell what kind of a person January Jones is by looking at a photo of a movie premiere?
First, pregnant women tend to glow.
Second, she is promoting a movie that she is in.
Maybe thats why she is gloating!?
Also, how is she responsible of putting Claudia Schiffer out of her misery?
Schiffers Husband is responsible for that. Only he and not Jones.

January looks great pregnant. One of the best looking pregnant celebs I’ve seen recently. Probably means she was underweight before the pregnancy and needed to gain a few pounds anyway.

I don’t think anyone is entitled to know who the baby’s daddy is. Especially if the daddy is married. Why would she do that? Not telling is the most responsible thing one can do after doing something as irresponsible as having an affair if it means avoiding a huge public scandal and causing a divorce.

January is a single woman. Why is she considered a bitch for possibly sleeping with multiple men on the set? It’s the 21st century. Many children are born from one night stands and out of wedlock. And sometimes it’s a deliberate choice made by aging women who want to raise a family alone. I don’t understand why this is such a scandal or why people demand to know private information that is none of their business.

The problem is that now NO man/producer would like to work with her. Because it can happen again!

I am certain to say the MacAvoy is NOT the daddy, he then wouldn’t be in the picture at all.

It is SOOO VAUGHN, and I believe she has a defiant look, as CHocolate says above, as if she felt as good-looking as Claudia, or as if he had won the admiration she wanted. There is something weird about that, as if truly Vaughn had made her feel the centre of the earth and seduced her completely. She has glow and looks radiant. I found all this terrible but makes sense.

January and Claudia are sooo alike anyways.
