Justin Timberlake talks about Jessica Biel & Britney Spears with Vanity Fair

I totally believe Lainey’s conspiracy theory that Justin Timberlake was supposed to have the July cover of Vanity Fair, but got pushed aside for Waity and William. Now that I’m reading the excerpts from JT’s interview, I’m convinced. This is his first major interview since his breakup with Jessica Biel, and he really opened up and gave some good quotes… the kind of quotes you would expect to read in a cover story. Which makes me wonder… who is JT’s publicist? Whoever the dude or dudette is, isn’t doing a good job lately. You can read the full VF excerpt here, and here are some highlights:

jt

“She is the single-handedly most significant person in my life,” Justin Timberlake tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Vanessa Grigoriadis of recent ex-girlfriend Jessica Biel. “In my 30 years, she is the most special person, O.K.? … I don’t want to say much more, because I have to protect things that are dear to me—for instance, her.”

Timberlake reveals that he wants a family some day, but that “as little as six months ago I wouldn’t have even thought about that, but now it feels like a closer planet orbiting around.”

Of marriage, the musician turned actor explains what he feels is an uphill battle: “I think the mistake is that people commit to who that person is right then and not the person they’re going to become. That’s the art of staying together, is changing together,” he says. “When you say it like that, it seems damn near impossible, right?”

“Why do you think we all like each other?” Timberlake asks of why celebrities—him included—so often date other celebrities. “Why do you think we wind up dating each other, and feeling more comfortable around each other? We understand what it’s like. ‘Oh, thank God—finally, somebody who knows how I feel.’ It’s refuge.”

Of his arguably most famous ex-girlfriend, Britney Spears, Timberlake tells Grigoriadis, “I wish her the best—that goes without saying. We haven’t spoken in 9 or 10 years.” The former child star says that most of his and Spears’s relationship was based on circumstance, but had no chance for the long term. “We were two birds of the same feather—small-town kids, doing the same thing. But then you become adults, and the way you were as kids doesn’t make any sense. I won’t speak on her, but at least for me, I was a totally different person,” he says. “I just don’t think we were normal; there was nothing normal about our existence. We spent way too much time being the biggest thing for teenyboppers.”

“It was exciting that we were having so much success and we could do whatever we wanted. And I mean that about everybody: Backstreet Boys, ’NSync, Britney, Christina,” Timberlake says of his early years as a pop idol. “At that time, we could literally go, ‘Oh, man, let’s go to Bali,’ and we’d be on a plane to Bali. We were little kids with big toys. You do the math—that’s not going to last.” Some very big toys, indeed, as Timberlake recalls that on the set of The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, “Ryan [Gosling] and I used to steal golf carts and go driving in the middle of the park to get milk shakes, and we never got in trouble for it. We thought we were big sh-t.”

Timberlake says that while he has no new plans for music on the horizon (“I wouldn’t say I’m not going to put out another [album]. I would say that would be a bad bet, if you were betting. But I could see myself only doing one more big tour”), he does have a spate of new movies coming out, including Friends with Benefits with co-star Mila Kunis.

As for the sex scene in the film, Kunis says when given the choice, she and Timberlake decided to film it at the last possible moment. “We figured that by then we’d really, hopefully, be friends, which is what happened,” says Kunis. “It’s always uncomfortable to do those scenes … You have to be in these crazy positions for 12 to 16 hours. I’ll never forget when Justin had to be on top of me with his right hand on my left pasty and his left hand on my right pasty—my feet were getting numb, and I think his hands were giving out on him. It was a workout.”

Of her co-star’s nudity in Benefits, Kunis says, “The men never have to do anything, and we’re always seeing the boobies of the ladies. So for this one, [director] Will [Gluck] said, ‘O.K., Justin can show himself off,’ which I thought was great.”

“It was fun,” Timberlake agrees, “but I can’t say I’m going to be butt-naked in a movie again. I only did it because I’m young now, and everything’s where it’s supposed to be. I figured this is the time, before gravity gets the best of me.”

[From Vanity Fair]

I like the way JT sounds here – he sounds less like a punk kid with the world at his feet and more like a dude who has faltered a few times and had his ass handed to him a few times. I don’t know… like, JT knows about humility. Considering his acting career thus far, yeah, he should know about humility. Do you really think Biel was “the single-handedly most significant person” in his life? It’s a nice thing for him to say, and it goes against everything else we’ve heard about the two of them as a couple. Who knows? As for the Britney Spears quote – I’m really glad he didn’t go further. I would have preferred he just say “no comment” but I think that at this point, everybody just hopes Britney stays healthy, even her exes.

dislike him immensely, will never take him seriously as an actor

  2. brin says:

He’s a douche trying not to sound like a douche.

  3. Eve says:

    @ Aloe juice:

dislike him immensely, will never take him seriously as an actor

I soooo agree with you that it’s not even funny.

However, I’d like to add that the word “actor” and his name should never be used in the same sentence.

  4. RHONYC says:

i disagree regarding his acting ability…in ‘Black Snake Moan’ his panic attacks were VERY realistic, take it from someone who knows. 😉

i also think he has great comedic timing…his SNL ‘Talking.It.Up! on the Ba-har-ry Gibb Ta-halk Sho-hoow’ with Jimmy Fallon is stomach achingly funny!!!

check it out if you don’t believe me. 😆

  5. the original bellaluna says:

@ aloe juice & Eve – Co-sign! (Unless the sentence is something along the lines of “And the short-lived career of Justin Timberlake, former actor, is a case study of why a pop star should not attempt to act.”)

Edit: GAH! Stuck in mod jail…

  6. taylor says:

I see the over the top JT hate is still thriving around here. JT is coming along fine as an actor, and with 3 films coming out over the next 5 months he isn’t going away. And talented directors like David Fincher do not hire people they don’t think can act.

  7. CG says:

@aloe juice @eve Yes! I wish he would stop trying to make “actor” happen. And I wish the media would stop trying to make “Justin Timberlake is an actor” happen.

  8. the original bellaluna says:

@ taylor – It’s not hate. That’s too strong a word and requires way more energy than I care to expend on him.

It’s more like being exhausted after a long decade of dealing with a narcissistic, over-indulged man-child. (Which could apply to any number of people in the entertainment industry, really.)

  9. Quest says:

Why now…he is such a jerk. Don’t know why they keep casting him in films. SNL is probably the closes he will get actually acting

  10. Eve says:

David Fincher had to edit The Social Network to hell and back in order to make Timberlake’s “acting” bearable.

    @ Original Bellaluna:

It’s like he (Timberlake) was to prove he can master all the artistic fields. I can’t stand him, not even his SNL’s sketches along with Adam Samberg (another painfully unfunny comedian, in my opinion).

Now about singers/musicians turning into actors, I must confess that I do love Tom Waits’s performances though. Granted, I love him to death so my opinion may be a little biased, but the freaking weird type he plays very well. Maybe because he’s really freaking weird in real life.

I also think actors who try to become singers/musicians usually fail at that attempt.

  11. 4Real says:

So nothing about Cammi huh?? That’s innnnteresting….no?

  12. jinni says:

I see he isn’t getting ragged on for talking about Britney, who even he has said he hasn’t spoken to for a decade, but when others do this (especially actresses) they get called desperate or are seen as not being able to move on/using a dead relationship for attention. I wonder why?

Also, I like how he’s trying to make it seem like he and Ryan Gosling were really close. Looks like he’s trying to use Ryan actual acting credibility to help himself out. It’s like he’s trying to say that since both of them were on the Mickey Mouse club and are now actors that they are on the same level (eventhough Ryan is so much better than Justin will ever be), so people shouldn’t just see him as an ex-boybander and mouseketeer. I don’t know, it just seems weird that he’s talking about Ryan now when before Ryan was really getting accolades Justin never talked about him.

  13. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yea he sounds less like a douche. I can give him a chance as a person and if he makes a good song I would get it but I can’t see myself taking him seriously as an actor.

I also don’t like the idea behind his new movie with Mila Kunis. The trailer for it makes it skeevy, like I could see some 16 year olds thinking of this. Besides Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher made this movie several months ago and I don’t even remember the name of it and I don’t care for the FWB concept at all.

  14. the original bellaluna says:

    @ Eve – That’s exactly what it’s like!

And we all know his momma “is the single-handedly most significant person” in his life. Who is he trying to fool?

  15. Eve says:

    @ Original Bellaluna:

Oh, my…I meant “it’s like he waNTs to prove…”. There must be something going on with me today. Or I caught whatever you had yesterday.

  16. June says:

    Interesting indeed, 4Real!

  17. Zoe says:

Timberlake is very hit or miss as an actor. But for those on here challenging that he can’t act, I dare you to watch ‘Black Snake Moan’ and/or ‘Alpha Dog’, both good films, BTW. He really shocked me and changed the way I felt about him as a performer, I think he’s far more talented than people often credit. Contrary, I’ve also seen him be pretty awful on film, so I think it really depends on the quality of the script and how he fits a role. When well cast, he’s surprisingly brilliant.

  18. Lucy says:

    @ original bellaluna

that is EXACTLY why I like him…as the mother of 2 grown sons, any boy who loves his mommy so much is okay in my book…and I like him on Saturday Night Live, he seems up for anything they throw at him…

  19. serena says:

I don’t get why he wouldn’t do music anymore. He was good, and obliviously more talented than being an actor.

  20. theonlyone says:

    I like him

  21. vanessa says:

he should do another album! I loved his music and loved when him and timbaland collaborated.

  22. bogie says:

So no one is going to comment on what he said about dating other famous people. Which I thought was an excuse for why he only dates other famous people. I think it is an attention thing and a…. I don’t want to spend my money on some woman thing. His comment about Biel is bologna…didn’t he say the same about Diaz.

  23. Roma says:

@jinni: I was pretty into Ryan Gosling during his shameful Breaker High days and I recall RG saying how lonely he was on the set of the Mickey Mouse Club. In fact I think he insinuated that JT was a jerk to him because he wasn’t as good of a singer?

  24. ol cranky says:

does anyone else think it’s very odd that 6 months ago, when he was in a relationship with “the most special person” he’s been with in his 30 years of life, he didn’t even think about having a family but now that he’s split from this most special person he’s suddenly seeing this as something more tangible? Is he very politely saying, Biel is so special because she basically taught him what he definitely doesn’t want in a relationship and family and, armed with this information, he now knows what he really wants and needs to look for the right fit?

  25. Amanda G says:

That’s really sweet what he said about Jessica. I’m also glad JT mentioned that the BS thing was TEN years ago. I wish people would get over it.

So is he giving up music or something? One more tour? He’s only 30. It’s too soon to be making such broad statements like that. I get that he wants to be taken serious as an actor, but he is a better musician.

  26. Dingles says:

I will always love this guy for his work on SNL alone. He’s just a great comedic performer and always elevates the show when he’s on.

  27. taylor says:

    @zoe

Thanks for bringing reality back to the conversation. He was very good in both of those films.

  28. CurlyJoy says:

Don’t know how I got over here really…
Though, I’ll say never liked N’Sync or had any thought of putting entertainers on pedestals. Also, there was a certain part that I thought was very egoist. The part about the reasons celebrated people date each other. It’s more of a reason I would start a silent march. That way people will get over these insignificant people and including their daily life’s interludes within local news.

In general, I think it’s tacky how celebrated people choose to discuss their personal relationships. It’s like they set themselves up for the aftermath of including public commentary where it surely doesn’t belong.

I’m gonna get my long-winded butt out of here.

  29. Berman says:

He didn’t mention Cameron Diaz which he had a long term relationship than I think Britney and Jessica.

  30. jemshoes says:

I don’t buy a word of it – it’s all spin and image control. Before Jessica Biel, I used to think he was an OK guy who happened to be a good performer / entertainer.

Jessica gets her fair share of blame for letting him use and humiliate her the way he did, but no decent boy (even one who loves his mummy so much) does to a girl what he did to Jessica. His cavalier behaviour lost all my respect and admiration for him as a celebrity and has tainted how I view his work. So, absolutely no love from me for this guy – and I don’t care how carefully he plays his soundbites.

  31. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Cannot STAND him! However, I will agree with those who’ve said he was good in Alpha Dog and in the Andy Samburg SNL skits. In other words, he’s good at portraying various incarnations of his douchy self.

  32. Enn says:

For some reason I thought he spoke/met with Britney after Sean Preston was born…

  33. Annie_Grey says:

Rhonyc-The Barry Gibb talk show is the best skit ever on SNL.
(I’m also a big Beegees fan)

The guy is charming and has great wit, but I get the feeling that he can be really cold at times.

  34. kitty says:

Justin is a talented lad both musically and as an actor. He’s funny but can play serious, too, which is difficult to do.

I think he’ll get back with Jessica since he now realizes he wants children and this is what tore them apart. She’s like a Robin Wright of sorts allowing him to stray without busting his balls about it. In other words, she accepts him unconditionally.

  35. Alexa says:

I must have missed something major about J.T. while my computer’s been down. I’ve grown very entertained and impressed by this guy’s talents. (Did he kill somebody?)

  36. Dirty Martini says:

Dont love him, but I’m ambivalent enough not to care to have the energy to hate on him. He and Britney were babies at the time, but the whole “cry me a river’ video trash talking he did was about as classy as her cheating. Then there was the breakup drama with Cameron Diaz and public meltdowns. The ups/downs / and even put downs of Jessica biehl.

hey–hes the male equivalent of jennifer anniston~! And despite having only a modicum of talent, somehow they both wind up with new professional venues and new strange.

    Go figure.

  37. Charlotte says:

I too am shocked that he makes no mention of Diaz but he talks about Biel as though he doesn’t hate her. Seems obvious to me that he’s simply covering his own azz. He was philandering all over the place when he was with Biel, which is interesting to me because, IMO, Biel is one of the most beautiful women in hollywood. One of the most talented? Def. no. But beautiful face and gorgeous body, yes. She’s either incredibly terrible to put up with in private (hella annoying), or he’s just a tool that can’t be satisfied by anything good thrown at him.

  38. Kolby says:

I met him once when I was living in Orlando. He was incredibly sweet and funny, and he certainly didn’t have to be. I don’t know if he’s grown into a douche since then, but he IS talented. I wish he’d make another album.

  39. Quercus says:

He was completely awesome on SNL. Really, he just sold every skit. My favorite was the “creepy robots” skit. I didn’t hate him in The Social Network either.

  40. Sakyiwaa says:

aww, JT was my first EVER teen crush…
i know the general consensus is that he’s a douche…
i’ll always have a soft spot 4 him tho’
    wot can i say? i’m a loyalist…

  41. typical aquarian says:

Let’s see – With Britney he went public with a get even song and video, and told people she was not a virgin. Got even with her, didn’t he.

With Diaz – he was somewhat faithful, until the end.

With Biel – who was seeing him while he was still with Diaz, so I could care less about what happened to her – he cheated bigggg time. My guess is that Biel thought she had it made in the shade to be the “one” since Diaz was much older than Timberlake. Did she feel guilty for seeing a man in a long term committed relationship? No.

However, once they were in a committed relationship he cheated on biel constantly. Diaz would not take that kind of Sh*t, but Biel took it for a long time. (stupid women – yes I’m a girl, and I hate stupid women). But, the difference here is that people know about his cheating, dumping Biel and being the typical birth sign he is, they try their best to get themselves out of trouble by playing head games. He thinks by this article that people and Jessica will forgive him. Jessica keep running and find a real man.

  42. You understand thus considerably in terms of this matter, produced me for my part consider it from a lot of varied angles. Its like women and men don’t seem to be involved unless it is something to accomplish with Girl gaga! Your individual stuffs excellent. All the time maintain it up!
