Kate Middleton wore Ralph Lauren to her first post-wedding public outing

Here are new photos of Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William in their first public outing together since the wedding. On Saturday, they attended the Epsom Derby in Surrey, England, where one of the Queen’s horses was competing (he came in third, bad show!). But all eyes were on Waity and Wills, of course. And the princess wore an American designer!!!! This is HUGE fashion news. Traditionally, princesses and all of the females in the royal family are expected to have a wardrobe made up of mostly British designers. Princess Diana changed that, of course (she loved her Versace, after all). And now it looks like Kate is taking her first tentative steps towards building a larger, international wardrobe. She started small, with Ralph Lauren. RL designs clothes to make Americans look like (vacationing) Europeans, so it makes sense. And Kate is wearing white!! So bridal. I’ve already said I love that – new brides should wear a lot of white. So, Kate’s jacket and skirt were Ralph Lauren, but her fascinator/hat was Issa (her favorite label) and the shoes were Reiss (another favorite label). Both Prince Harry and William wore top hats and tails. Pippa and Kate’s parents were not in attendance. Interesting.

Meanwhile, in other Will & Waity news, it was announced that their London residence has been decided: they will be moving into Kensington Palace, where Diana lived solo after her split from Charles. I mean, I’m not sure if William and Kate will be moving into the same apartment or not, but it’s certainly interesting:

The couple are expected to move into the Palace within weeks, ahead of their 11-day tour Canada and California from June 30. St James’s Palace confirmed that the couple will move into a “small” apartment at the Palace, which is also home to a number of other Royals.

The move will be temporary, as the couple are believed to want a larger London residence in the long term, in order to have the necessary space to begin a family and to entertain. In the run-up to their wedding in April, the Duke and Duchess shared living quarters with Prince Harry at Clarence House, the official London residence of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

A spokesman for St James’s Palace, said: “The couple’s official London residence will temporarily become a property at Kensington Palace. A number of options for longer-term solutions are still being considered. The couple’s main home will continue to be their house on Anglesey, and their Household Office will continue to be based at St James’s Palace. The property in question at Kensington Palace into which the couple are temporarily moving is small. While it more than suffices for occasional visits to London for now, and the Royal couple are very grateful for it, the Duke and Duchess are considering options for a more permanent official London residence. No suitable properties are currently available.”

It is understood that the couple will live at Kensington Palace until more spacious living quarters become available at one of the Royal residences.

The Queen is already believed to have offered them the use of apartments at Buckingham Palace, and they are also thought to have also considered apartments at both St James’s Palace and Clarence House.

Prince William spent much of his childhood at Kensington Palace after apartments eight and nine were combined in 1981 to create the London residence of the Prince of Wales and Princess Diana.

Both Princes William and Harry attended nearby Wetherby pre-preparatory school in Notting Hill, and Princess Diana often took them to the local shops and restaurants on Kensington High Street, encouraging them to enjoy a “normal” childhood.

Kensington Palace remained the Princess’s official residence after her divorce in 1996 and until her death in a Paris car crash the following year. However, it is understood that the Duke and Duchess will not be moving into the Princess’s old apartments, which are currently used as office space.

The couple, who will principally reside in Anglesey until 2013, where the Duke works as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, will also share the Palace with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

[From The Telegraph]

So, just a “small” apartment (probably ten rooms or so, just my guess) until a castle becomes available. Here’s the thing – the Queen owns some private properties, sure, but most of her “property holdings” are actually owned by England, you know? They’re like historical monuments or just castles that sit around for tours to go through. What if William and Kate wanted to move into one of the historical properties and make it a working residence? That stuff fascinates me, basically because the idea of trying to renovate a centuries-old castle makes me break out in hives.

Correction: Carole Middleton was there but she was down with the “common folk” (Check the daily mail)

  2. Lantana says:

Her knees are showing again. Isn’t that a scandal lol? I think she looks lovely.

  3. Kjune says:

Last photo: Ugh, Kate, there’s your future. Those Windsor men do NOT age well.

  4. viper says:

I do NOT like this look on her she look so old here. This look just ages her without a doubt, and I also think the weight loss contributes to it.

  5. SAM says:

Ummm, the Daily Mail has identified different designers than you have for the ensemble worn by the Duchess of Cambridge (waity katie no more!)……
    Who’s right, who’s wrong?

    Gorgeous!

  7. embertine says:

The idea of being one of the taxpayers inevitably funding the renovation of a centuries-old castle makes ME break out in hives.

  8. Lynnie says:

    Adorable couple!

  9. Zimmer says:

    The hat has to go.

  10. DGO says:

    She looks so old.

  11. Micki says:

That’s probably the first outfit I heartily dislike. The hat leaves me speechless and the jacket is sort of undecided combo between military style(upper pockets) and leisure/country gents(the rest)

  12. tracking says:

Agree the suit is too matronly, but she looks lovely from the neck up. Heck, at least the shoes show some improvement.

  13. feebee says:

Is it just me or has she aged overnight? Maybe it’s the way the hat looks too big and hair up? Don’t like the pockets on the jacket. Why do they do that?

Will has Spencer blood so maybe he’ll age better than his uncle is. Plus with his hat on he’s having a very good day. It brings out Diana’s features in him as long as he keeps to not smiling too broadly!

  14. Abby says:

Love the top hat and tails! This is not Waity’s best look, but she’s still very pretty.

  15. LL says:

    No wedding band, Wills?

  16. AE says:

The newspapers always called Andrew the handsome one of that generation in the 1980s. William certainly has the bad Windsor aging genes.

  17. danielle says:

Yeah, this is the first outfit I’ve really disliked. I don’t like the way her hair is up with that hat either.

  18. Roma says:

Her eyeliner is aging her horribly. Do not line your bottom lid when going out in the daylight!

  19. snappyfish says:

Not really of fan of this outfit. The suit is cute but that is all. Not a fan of the Fascinator but the shoes are nice.

Diane did like her Versace but not until AFTER the divorce. The first several years of her marriage she was in horrible outfits mostly by Walker. Of course she does get the benefit of “The 80’s” as a reason for her unfortunate fashion taste.

She got much better in the 90’s. Cahterine’s style has been smart and stylishly elegant since day one.

Still can’t explain the “style” of The Princesses of York or Chelsy Davy.

  20. KLaw says:

    She looks happy. 🙂

  21. Crash2GO2 says:

    She looks lovely.

  22. Onyx XV says:

She looks well put together, even if it is a tad on the matronly side.

William should ALWAYS wear a hat. Just sayin!

  23. cubesque says:

She wore the Peacock dress by Reiss and the Nessie Tweed Jacket by Joseph. The outfit does look lovely on her.

  24. LLLLLL says:

I love how she did her hair! very pretty.

  25. kwoww says:

LOVE the hat. He’s still got it, regardless of his hairline. She, on the other hand, should stop ysing eyeliner on her bottom lid. blah.

  26. Ashley says:

They both look like c#%p here….sorry both are dressed sooooo badlyyyyyyyyy

  27. jh says:

Ralph Lauren’s suit looks poorly-made : it’s lumpy in the back and the front placket isn’t well-constructed. Things like that really annoy me! Designer stuff used to be really beautiful and durable, but not, it seems, anymore.

  28. devilgirl says:

Thank God British women still wear stockings. I do not get why women over here in the U.S think that going bare legged is chic?

  29. Hellen says:

She looks frumpy and matronly – the bun and the boring old-lady hat are very aging. Also – badly coordinated outfit: skirt and jacket do not go well together, and are 2 different colors.

All that being said, she herself is lovely and graceful, and appears very much at ease. Good for her.

  30. girl says:

That top is hideous. Tiny pockets where breasts should be? No thanks.

The whole “fascinator” thing is so frequently done wrong. I hardly ever see it done well.

  31. apsutter says:

Yikes!!! She looks so old, drawn, and tired with her hair pulled back. Let’s face it, this girl was never going to age well because she looked old even 4-5 years ago. Some girls just have faces like that. But if she would gain back like 10-15 lbs she would look a whole lot better!

  32. k taylor says:

She looks pretty but is she allergic to color?

  33. Berman says:

In the photos he is not wearing his wedding ring and she is wearing the engagement ring… Hmmmm.

  34. apsutter says:

She is wearing both rings…that engagement ring just dwarfs the wedding ring. A lot of women wear both. And its already been reported that William is not going to wear a wedding ring, which is customary

  35. Annie_Grey says:

She’s sort of vibing Victoria Beckham. I like her hair up.

  36. Jaxx says:

@devilgirl—Amen! Can’t abide the US habit of going without hose. When you dress up hose are essential for a polished look.

I think Kate looks lovely with her flirty little skirt. But she does wear too much eye makeup. Very aging.

  37. Lindy says:

I love that pic where she’s looking back over her shoulder at Will. She’s *almost* grinning. It’s kind of sweet.

  38. Anon73 says:

re : Prince William in that hat… MEOW !! love that look. Kate looks like my Granny. no wait, my Granny looks sexier.

  39. Aurelia says:

God this chick has no idea, seriously. Lose the eyeliner and the miniskirts ok. Underwhelming like all her gear. Even her wedding dress failed to suprise me.

  40. luls says:

Hats are Williams best friend 😛

Kate should gain 7pounds and get rid of the lower-lid black liner.
Those things alone, would roll back years off her face!

Why does EVERYBODY in these photos (except Kate) look so HORSEY?!

  41. Chickie Baby says:

Holy crap, these two are just so darn cute together, I can’t stand it. They always make me smile.

  42. Faye says:

No wedding band…as his wifey, I might be miffed, but really, it’s not as though anyone is forgetting he’s married any time soon. Not with the huge amount of the world watching the wedding and the magazines about the wedding everywhere.

I like her outfit, the skirt and heels are very flattering, but the blazer is just ok. They look cute together, I like the picture of him whispering something in her ear and she’s obviously stifling a laugh.

  43. Lisa Turtle says:

She wears pounds of makeup. It’s so cakey. Cakey Kate.

I seriously have eyeliner trauma from her overuse.

  44. really says:

    Just lovely!

  45. claudia says:

poor lady, she looks so old ando so bored.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

terrible outfit, its not chic, not trendy, not pretty, not nothing…

  46. Tiffany says:

Love the hats on the guys! I can’t believe next year I will be living so close to KP I can throw a rock and hit it. Lovely neighborhood, BTW. Maybe they will deign us a visit to Cirque at the RAH. The Queen’s box is quite posh. I got to sit in her chair-take that Quennie!

  47. Cat says:

She seems to channeling SJP, no?? Will looks hot, especially that 2nd shot!!

  48. Tucson says:

Is it just me, or does she look like Elizabeth Hurley in some of the pics??

  49. JulieM says:

What! She’s not preggers yet? She looks old.

  50. Pink Bow says:

You got the designers wrong . The suit is not Ralph Lauren and it is not a suit . It is a Joseph Neiss Tweed jacket layerd over a white Reiss “peacock” dress . The shoes and the clutch are Reiss but the hat is Whiteleys ( Issa doesn’t even make hats , and their dresses look the same but different colors )

  51. eternalcanadian says:

Say, why doesn’t everyone call Catherine “Cakey Catherine” as that makeup she is wearing is awful! I mean doesn’t she know how to blend the dark eyeshadow (pictures 1 & 4)? And that darned black eyeliner on the lower eyelids!

The hair doesn’t do it. Too severe and adds 10 years to her.

The outfit. Oh gosh. I’m speechless. It’s awful! Looks like something the Queen would wear.

And whoa, what happened to Prince Andrew? Oh yeah, he turned 50. 😮

  52. John Wayne Lives says:

Damn girl has bags! And I know everyone has already said it, but…. gah! That lower lid eyeliner! Stop it!
Other than that, she looks nice, and meh, and english. How very appropriate of you Cakey Catie (I like that one lol)

Aaaand. About the no-hose for us American girls… I really think it is directly linked to the hippie and the 60’s etc. I know the UK had its own cultural evolution along with us, but we had it in our own free and fun American way, and when bras were burnt, the hose went too, and never really came back. So says my mom the hippie 😉
Besides, isn’t it colder over there across the pond? Lol. But seriously, no way would I wear hose on a summer day in SoCal no matter how fancy or formal. Eeewwww and uncomfortable!

  53. sweet candy says:

What happen, she looks old ??
and well, she’s looking a bit tired, NO ?

I hope she can find path to get back to her amazing choices of dress, because she’s definitely age well and she’s beautiful.

  54. april says:

I think that particular hat ruins the outfit. She needs a different hat. It doesn’t flatter her face.

  55. phaksi says:

The black eyeliner is too much! I didn’t like the hose at first cos I thought it was white, but it looks good. The outfit is quite matronly. Harry looks hot as always 🙂

  56. MJ says:

Nude hose is not your friend, especially when your legs are that tanned. Also, would it kill her to wear pencil skirts more often than these flowy frocks like the Queen would wear? Yikes. She dresses like a 60+ year-old.

  57. C.Z. says:

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who does not like her outfit here.

  58. Cleo says:

She looks good with that woodshop curls hat even with pale lips.
