Johnny Depp does the drunken gonzo thing in ‘The Rum Diary’ trailer

OMG! The trailer for The Rum Diary is finally out and… damn, this looks good. Johnny Depp stars once again as a Hunter S. Thompson-esque journalist in a film adapted from a book by Hunter S. Thompson based on the real adventures of Hunter S. Thompson. Call it Fear and Loathing in Puerto Rico. Obviously, the film is set in Puerto Rico, and it was filmed there too – a while ago. I feel like they filmed this two years ago…? Here’s the trailer:

I could have done without the bloody eyes, but other than that, it looks like a spectacular film. It’s nice to see Richard Jenkins get consistent work, and Aaron Eckhart is always a nice surprise. The chick is Amber Heard – she’s the lead in Eddie Cibrian’s new NBC show, The Playboy Club. Here’s the press release for the film:

Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins).

Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.

The film is release in America on October 28, and I’m guessing that Johnny will be on-hand, supporting the film at some film festivals and such. Did you ever hear him talk about his relationship with Hunter? It’s pretty funny – they loved each other a lot, and when Hunter was alive, Johnny would go visit Hunter on his Colorado property often. Johnny also paid for Hunter’s 2005 funeral, which involved a 153-foot tall canon (which shot Hunter’s cremains into the sky). I tend to think that Johnny did this film not just because he liked the book, but because he misses his friend, and this is his love letter to Hunter.

I’m not familiar w/ the book at all, but i’m so excited to see Johnny in a movie looking normal. no make-up or crazy accents. just him, being hot and doing what he does best.

  2. Ari says:

@Kimmy I agree its a complete flashback (a good one!)

  3. ladybert62 says:

He has such a wonderful face!

I did not know about the hunter s. thompson friendship – this movie sounds interesting.

Johnny is such a versatile actor!

  4. Quest says:

Oi, loving the old Johnny vibes look again… he is such a beautiful man. This looks good.

  5. Thea says:

I would so hit that. Twice.

  6. Maritza says:

Now this is the handsome well groomed Johnny Depp we want to see, what a difference! The movie looks really good and since it was filmed in PR I like it even more.

  7. Angelina says:

It would have been great if Benicio Del Toro had been in this with Johnny as they are such good friends as well. Plus BDT was good friends with Hunter and being set in Puerto Rico Benny would have been right at home lol

  8. mamaT says:

    twice? three times….at least….*yum*

  9. Kitty_Cal says:

He’s not only a good actor, but a nice person as well.

  12. Green_Eyes says:

Johnny being Johnny..can’t get any better than that! Can’t wait to see this!

  13. Alice says:

I love Johnny as any gonzo character. I really don’t like movies with love plots and sex scenes though, so we’ll see if I can overcome my dislike of love stories enough to see Johnny in his element.

  14. werty says:

Ooh Johnny and Amber in one movie!
    Def seeing this one!!

  15. your mama says:

Never realized that Johnny was so close to Hunter. WoW

  16. Jen34 says:

Just look at his face. He’s beautiful.

  17. Eve says:

    Dashing!

  18. Turtle Dove says:

    “Try to look normal.” lol

This looks amazing. Final Johnny away from the PotC Disney crap and in a film he can chew on. The chemistry between him and Amber seems 100 times better than what he had with AJ, and he looks sooo good.

  19. Mary Jane says:

Loved “Fear and Loathing” and I cannot wait to see this!

  20. PrettyLights says:

I am a huge fan of Hunter S. Thompson and absolutely love Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (the book and movie, which are very similar)… good to see that Johnny is not reverting back to his character in that movie, which was genius, but doing something different this time around. Can’t wait to see it, whether it turns out to be cheesy/love story-ish or not, it should still be a great film if the dialogue is taken from the book. The article Johnny wrote in Rolling Stone recalling meeting and being friends with Hunter is a great tribute – http://www.inadepptrance.com/Elke's%20Stuff/Writing_Rolling_Stone_A_Pair_Of_Deviant_Bookends.htm RIP Hunter – he was truly too weird to live, and too rare to die.

  21. MJ says:

Johnny Depp is going to be tingling our biscuits until he’s in diapers. He’s aging really well.

  22. Crash says:

Now THIS is the hot Johnny I remember! Glad to see him back. NOT to take away from his immense talent. Unlike most “pretty” actors this man can really get the job done.

  23. PrettyLights says:

I can’t get the link to post right, but if anyone is interested in a more in depth look at the Depp-Thompson relationship, look up ‘A Pair of Deviant Bookends’ written by Depp after Thompson’s death

  24. yo-ho_ahoy says:

u had me at johnny depp

  25. misspdx says:

THANK YOU Kitty-Cal!! I laughed so much reading that. RIP HST

  26. Chris says:

It’s good to see Johnny back in what looks like a decent film again. I wonder how it’ll compare to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It looks a lot more coherent.

But wasn’t Hunter S. Thompson at some of “those parties” with Roman Polanski in the 70s?

  27. wunderkindt says:

He’s totally hot when cleaned up, shaven. I love his face!

  28. Memphis says:

I will watch and love any movie Johnny is in.

On a side note a canon shooting cremains into the sky…well that’s just ewwww.

  29. Lily says:

Finally! I’ve been waiting for this trailer to come out. I read the book, it’s really good. I just though it was a little weird that they cut out Yeamon since he was a main character, but whatever still looks good.

  30. Camille says:

It looks good. And I am loving seeing a clean cut JD again, yay 🙂 .

  31. fake oakleys says:
