    I was looking forward to Eddie hosting, now I guess it’s either Billy Crystal or Billy Crystal. Hugh Jackman would be good too, but I believe he’s already said no.

    Louis CK … also HILARIOUS.

    I was looking towards something different at the Oscars this year. After last year’s craptastic hosts, I thought this might be a good year for the awards show.

    Not sorry to see Eddie Murphy go…

    Please Obi Wan Jackman, you are our only hope.

    Snooze on Billy Crystal again, if so.

    Too bad 4 them the Golden Globes are going to be so good this year. Oscars will be boring after the surefire circus that insult comic will cause.

    I don’t know why people think Billy Crystal would be a good idea…I don’t think his jokes would work for this gen. Maybe for the older Academy members, but wouldn’t that be a step in the opposite direction that they were trying to go?

    I thought Ratner’s slur was pretty minor, as slurs go. It was more a lazy word usage than out-and-out hate speech. When you make people crawl and abjectly apologize for that level of transgressive behavior, what are you going to do with the Gallianos and Reverend Fred Phelps’s of the world?

    I was also kind of looking forward to see if Eddie could pull it off. I might have actually watched the broadcast, for the first time in years.

    Noooooooooooooo!! Damnit, I was looking forward to the 80s leather-suit Eddi.

    However if Ricky Garvis would host the Oscars, I would kindly welcome him as a replacement for Eddi. But I can’t think of anyone else. Maybe Chris Rock. But honestly I can’t think of any funny white stand up comedians.

    Hugh Jackmans singing was entertaining, but wouldn’t work for a second time.

    Boo Hoo! I was really looking forward to Eddie Murphy hosting, especially after last year’s Hathaway/Franco debacle. Hopefully Billy Crystal or someone else FUNNY will step up to the plate. Too bad the Oscars can’t steal Ricky Gervais from the Golden Globes.

    Eddie hasnt been funny since the early 80′s so this is a good thing.

    Agree about partying with RiRi, her voice and ‘music’ hurts my ears something awful but she does seem like a fun gal.

    I am not sure how accurate the Joe Paterno report is at this time. Other news sources are reporting he will retire at the end of the season which is different from being fired. I haven’t seen another source say that he has been fired except on the link above.

  19. pwal says:

    Ricky Gervais as Oscar host? No.

    It is one thing for him to host the Golden Globes – the stars get to eat… have something(s) to drink. Therefore, the environment is conducive to him taking shots at the stars since they are somewhat lubricated. And the show is only 3 hours longs.

    Versus the Oscars, which is an all day ordeal, in terms of getting ready, enduring press lines and having to sit there for 4 hours **minimum** with no eats and drinks. If I was a celeb at an Oscars ceremony, I sure as $h*t wouldn’t be in the mood for some smarmy git to take ongoing shots at me for 4-5 hours straight.

    Yes, it’s great to appeal to the audiences at home, but if the home audience is imbibing in basic creature comforts while the ‘honorees’ are flogged relentlessly (again, without eats and drinks), it just doesn’t seem right. AT ALL.

    And frankly, I think Eddie was stupid to jump ship. I have no idea what his relationship with Ratner is, but I never got the impression that they were as thick as thieves. And I get that, maybe, Eddie has an uneasy relationship with TPTB behind the Oscars, but sticking with the project would’ve been a good reflection on him.

    As I said on the Ratner thread – one down, one to go.

    I only hope they don’t bring back Billy Crystal.

    Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris did a hilarious number at the Tonys, someone should ask them.

    There is a LOT more going on in this story. That Oscars gig is one of the biggest jobs in entertainment. Hosting/producing/directing the Oscars is almost like winning one. It puts you in a very exclusive club.

    That particular f-word seems mild…but I guess not so much, considering the gay-centricity of the Oscars. Code Name: Gay Super Bowl.

    Whatever…they’re gone. Flush.

  23. Marianne says:

    I wonder if him quitting had to do with Ratner? Ratner who was the producer basically got him the oscar hosting gig…and now that Ratner is out, I wonder if Murphy decided to go out in protest.

  25. HannahF says:

    Eddie didn’t just bail or flake out. He was Brett Ratner’s choice to host and the new producer will have their own choice. So when Brett ‘quit’ Eddie had to ‘quit’ as well.

  26. Seal Team 6 says:

    Good.

    And, for those calling what Ratner said a “minor” slur (wtf), replace it with any slur directed at any other minority: blacks, women, Jewish people, Hispanics, etc. Nope, it wasn’t minor, just as none of those would be, either.

    Both EM and BR are pigs, and revel in it.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    RDJ is not a bad idea. He did ease some of the awkward at last year’s GGs; he is very funny; he knows how to tease/needle people without drawing blood; and he’s not an ‘outsider with something to prove’. Plus, it would be a great opportunity to promote the next Iron Man film and the Avengers.
    But then there’s the whole defending Mel Gibson thing, although I don’t think he received any kind of backlash for that.
    Choosing to ignore the Ratner stuff, I’m willing to bet that the restrictions were too restrictive.
    I think EM would have been funny. And Lord knows those corpse-filled events need some funny!
  32. Jordan says:
    @Seal Team, except for slurs against women…you can use those all you want and no one protests.
    I think since Eddie Murphy has used the ‘f’ word in some of his comedy routines he probably thought it wasn’t fair to stay if Ratner was asked to quit b/c he used it.
    I love RDJ but I don’t see him being a great host for an entire Oscar’s show…that mess is long and I think he would be over it quickly.
    I love Billy Crystal, he’s still a doll and hasn’t lost his “edge”. Joel McHale, LOL! That would be funny, I don’t think he has the confidence though. Am glad that Ratner & Eddie are gone though, they’re both douchey.
    kaiser, Paterno “joepa” wasn’t fired, he is retiring at the end of the season. I think he should be fired at once & that the Grand Jury should have charged him with perjury like the other Penn State employees that lied. (I read the Grand Jury report). Its a horrible, disgusting story. Penn State fans, you can still love your football team, but quit defending the people that knew and covered up this horrific crime.
    Robert Downey JR. and Jude Law were pretty entertaining in their bit at the Oscars last time. I think it’d be great if they co-hosted because they have amazing chemistry. They’d bring a nice blend of comic and straight man, like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and such. Plus they’re both very hot to look at.
