Kate Winslet’s latest St. John’s ad campaign: less bitchfaced, more Botoxy?

Kate Winslet was named as the new “(Botox)face” of St. John’s last year. Her first batch of ads were memorable, in my mind, because Kate looked seriously pissed off in every shot, and St. John’s ad people must have found it difficult to Photoshop-out the “bitchface.” Anyway, these are some new ads from the St. John’s Spring 2012 campaign. We have two print ads and a video (which I’ve included below). The ad campaign was shot by Craig McDean, who does a lot of work for W Magazine, often creating airy, light-soaked images. I like the idea of this ad campaign – a woman in her 30s who isn’t a size zero, wearing comfortable, accessible, pretty business-wear. But somehow, the execution is “off” somehow. Maybe it’s because of whatever is happening to Kate’s face? Should we talk about Kate’s face? Um. You know my thoughts on it. Bitch is jacked to high heaven. Feel free to disagree.

In the video, Kate says: “This collection does feel very light and very fresh. What I love too is the lines are a lot more relaxed, and yet at the same time they still give shape, so you get those lovely feminine curves, which to me are very, very important. You don’t have to be a size 2 or even a size 4 to be able to wear these garments because they fall so well, they’re cut for women with a shape, and of course I love that. That’s me all over.”

Great shots of Kate. I really don’t think she’s done anything to her face. These pics are airbrushed, like most pics so it is hard to tell from these. Candid shots would be up for scrutiny. She looks lovely.

  2. carrie says:

very photoshopped but she looks alike herself

  3. Lady D says:

I can see the bitchface in pics 2 and 3.

  4. Nonny says:

    Thats not her face!

  5. LeeLoo says:

More bitch faced, even more photoshoppy plus ridiculous amounts of makeup. I wonder how things are going with Ned RockNRoll.

  6. Petunia says:

As long as she can still move her face to emote and doesn’t jack her lips or end up looking like CatWoman, it’s all good. She is one lovely woman!

  7. Mara says:

She is a beautiful woman photoshop or not .

  8. mia girl says:

I like her… bitchface and all.

  9. Liz says:

I think I’ve finally figured out why Kate Winslet annoys me so much.

I firmly believe she’s had “work”, but that’s not it.

I don’t mind – in Hollywood and much of life, it’s basically either “help”, or becoming invisible.

And I even understand the lying about it. The mockery and derision for older (I know she’s only, what?, 36, but still) actresses who are known to have had work done is almost as bad as what happens if she dares *not* do it.

But she’s so unbelievably sanctamonious about allegedly not having work done. And, regardless of whether or not she’s had botox, there is something galling about beautiful women lecturing other women for being shallow enough to, uh, care about beauty.

Do what you want with your own body and face, Kate. But don’t you dare spend your life benefiting from your beauty, and then sneer at women who want some of those benefits.

It’s like wealthy/wealthier people lecturing those further down the food chain for being concerned with aquiring wealth and claiming that money doesn’t matter. It does for those of us without that cushion, thankyouverymuch.

I think that that, more than anything, is what makes people dislike her.

Whew, that turned into a rant, didn’t it?

    • teri says:

      You are spot on Liz.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Doesn’t matter when you make some good points.

    • Sasha says:

An excellent point! Never thought about it this way.

    • LittleDeadGrrl says:

I think spot on as well. Your “rant” was perfect …

    • Kate says:

Thing is, even without surgery she’s still not “a natural beauty”. There are hundreds of thousands behind that body, eyebrows, hair, skin, clothes. Dermatologists, cosmetics experts, beauticians, trainers, couturiers, even just staggeringly expensive leisure wear. Pics of her in her late teens and she’s a pretty girl. Then she hits bigtime and she’s suddenly exquisite (though she had a brief time with her 1st husband, with a bob hairstyle, when she was actually a little plain, frankly: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQZ7dqHmHgQpzUiqgly4uods53bQeOdcMrspy_E6tzm81sUPHOl7d6k6yiNRA ). So for a woman with mindblowingly expensive beauty routines mere mortals could never afford to go on about natural beauty is ridiculous. Most will never have the money to spend on looking the way she does – even if you believe it’s all au naturel, which I don’t.

Which is a ranty way of saying I completely agree and you nailed it.

  10. Franny says:

I for sure thought that this was Kate Hudson.

  11. Kaboom says:

I question the wisdom of hiring a major celebrity for lots of money and then make them up and photoshop them almost unrecognizable.

  12. lucy2 says:

I like the first photo, she looks good in that.

The last thing I saw her in was Mildred Pierce, and she was not at all botox-y in that. There’s obviously a lot of photoshopping here, as there is in any print ad.

  13. Laura says:

Why are we making a Botox judgment on pictures that were airbrushed to death? I mean, don’t expect a normal-looking face if she’s airbrushed. She looks fine in the making-of video. Lots of makeup, but normal-looking. I personally don’t think she had work done. I actually think she’s aging poorly – that’s what’s ‘off’. Everyone keeps saying she’s aging beautifully but I strongly disagree. She’s always looked older than her actual age. She got away with it when she was young but now that she’s actually getting older, it’s not doing her any favours. She has harsh features that were complimented by puppy fat and youthful skin in the past, but now that she’s thinner and older, she’s looking more pinched. Sorry guys, she just doesn’t have the weird Botox face. I mean, the woman has wrinkles galore in regular pictures. Have you guys seen Carnage and Contagion? Bags under the eyes, wrinkles around the eyes, lines on the forehead. Her face looks like the real deal in those movies. Isn’t the point of Botox to tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles? If she’s getting Botox she’s wasting her money because she does have lines and wrinkles, and she can move her face around. Obviously you can’t see them in these pictures because they’ve been airbrushed out.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Hm, interesting thoughts. She is wearing an unholy amount of makeup in this, I mean, it’s like they dipped her head in ceruse and left the rest of her alone. You’d think they’d take better care with the blending and lighting. I think she looks good, but that plus the ‘shopping is a distraction. I mean, I don’t know, her eyebrows have seemed to look higher to me, and sometimes the corners of the eyes, too. But at the same time her face is picking some some of the characteristics that are a consistent with those of a lady her age. Maybe she tried it and stopped for a while, I don’t know. but something is different.

  14. Laura says:

I don’t get this. Why have Kate Winslet when you’re going to airbrush her to death? It totally defeats the purpose of having an actress representing your brand. People expect to identify with the actress. If they can’t recognize the actress due to ridiculous amounts of airbrushing, that’s a problem.

  15. Katie says:

Not botoxy, just photoshopped. At least she still looks like Kate Winslet, though! She’s awesome.

  16. only1shmoo says:

Botoxed, photoshopped, or not, she’s still effing hot!

  17. Original Chloe says:

I know it’s a part of her job, and those pictures are pretty, and the clothes too, but I can’t help but smile when I see a grown up woman making faces like that (I’m talking about the sexeh face, especially during the video of the shoot). They somehow remind me of those pictures teenage girls take of themselves with their phone cameras.

  18. danielle says:

    pretty

  19. Insertrandomname says:

I don’t like how she says : “you don’t have to be a size two or EVEN a size 4″…. Wtf? size 4 is still considered SMALL- at least in Europe.

Adding the word “even” there just makes it seem like it IS mostly intended for size 0,2 and maybe 4 – but not medium or large sizes. Just like adding “still” before something like “I still miss you” implies you soon won’t be.

Definitely not buying these clothes. And I’m normal (BMI < 25) weight/body shape.

  20. Eleonor says:

    Photoshopped to death.

  21. Roxy750 says:

Everyone is model these days aren’t they.

    • Trek Girl says:

There is nothing unusual about her, or other actresses and actors, being the face of an ad campaign or product. This has been happening basically since the early years of Hollywood, but it in a different way.

Here is an interesting link to an article on this very subject: http://www.squidoo.com/celebrity_ads

  22. anne_000 says:

She gives off an aura of Joan Crawford, who was not a soft, feminine image.

I think this is part of a segment of British women, who are cold, stern, and full of themselves. Just a segment, not all of them.

  23. Kim says:

    Very over photoshopped.

  24. kibbles says:

So anything over a size 4 is now “curvy”? Kate Winslet is naturally curvy but we all know that despite her denials that she diets and exercises she probably works really hard to maintain her figure. Most people see a decrease in metabolism as they age. How did Kate miraculously go from size 12/14 to a size 6 in her 30s and after having 2 children without being on a strict diet and exercise regimen as she claims in so many interviews? It’s absurd.

    • Laura says:

What? She said she tried dieting when she was very young but hated it. She also frequently mentions Pilates whenever she’s asked about exercise routines.

      • kibbles says:

Yes, she’s admitted to doing exercise like a few at home Pilates videos rather than admitting to expensive trainers or an at-home gym for instance. And she always downplays her exercise regimen in practically every interview. I looked through Celebitchy archives and this is what she said in her Glamour interview last year:

GLAMOUR: Do you have a personal trainer?
KATE WINSLET: [Continues laughing.] No. I just do my own stuff at home with the help of DVDs. A little bit of Pilates. And just recently I started running, but I’m not very good.

This is what she said in June 2009 to Hello!:
How do you stay in shape?
“I haven’t done any exercise since October. I haven’t done a thing. So who knows how I’m holding it together. Pilates definitely helped a bit. However, when I was doing it consistently, I wasn’t doing it that consistently. So maybe it’s just being busy and age.”

And what she said in January 2009:
Forget trainers and two-hour gym workouts. Kate Winslet has another secret to her movie-star figure: 20 minutes and a DVD. Winslet, who at 33 is a slim size 6 (UK size 10), tells the UK edition of Elle that “I don’t go to the gym because I don’t have time, but I do Pilates workout DVDs for 20 minutes or more every day at home.”

Maybe some of you believe that she maintains her figure with 20 minute pilates videos. I am much more skeptical. For her body type and her weight when she was in her 20s, I believe she does a lot more than 20 minutes of at-home pilates and skips doing exercise for months at a time. I am guessing she has a dietician, is very strict about the foods she eats, and has a really great at-home gym and/or personal trainer.

  25. frances says:

Are you insane? She hasn’t any botox on her face! The pics are photoshopped like always but she is sexy and beautiful!

  26. SueAnn says:

I watched that last night and I was amazed by how good her American accent was. WTG Kate!!!

  27. Jackie says:

watched sense and sensibility again last night. she looks like an entirely different person now.

  28. LittleDeadGrrl says:

I just don’t believe she hasn’t had work done. Her face looks tweeked … no one ages that way.

  29. marie says:

She disses everyone else for botox or plastic surgery and here she is so photoshopped.

  30. Dirty Martini says:

LOVE, Love, love me some Kate Winslet. Always have, always will.

I’d play for the other team for her.

When the world is full of Kim Kardashians, Lindsey Lohans, Paris Hiltons, etc etc etc

Bi-atching about KW seems to defy explanation to me…. Just sayin.

  31. Mila says:

She is photoshopped and has a wears a lot of make up in the shoot and commercial.
    Adobe bless you!
I think that she didn’t have any surgery or fillers or botox. Maybe some chemical peels and anti-aging cream but that’s it.
I saw her at Graham Norton’s show, her face looked normal and there were close ups so you could see small under eyes wrinkles and on forehead. Also if you look closer her pics from red carpet, wrinkles are visible.
And i like her and her attitude although sometimes she comes up as bitchy. But that’s ok, every woman has bitch inside ha ha.

  32. whatevs says:

for some reason i hate her and think she’s ugly. please don’t cut me though. idek why

    • frances says:

I bet you hate Kate but you love your plastic surgery celebrities! HAHA!

      • whatevs says:

ummm kate got plenty of plastic surgery no? her nose was much fatter before. and you could argue she lost weight, but her eyebrows got higher too and she’s definitely botoxed. no question about it. yet keeps denying it. and i am not a fan of plastic surgery. but kate was adamant about keeping overweight, was furious at a mag who shopped her legs to make them leaner and longer, and yet she loses it all and tells leo dicaprio that he was right about letting that fat girl thing go. whatevs. that’s not why i hate her. i don’t know why i hate her exactly, but a good example could be all the mindless drivels she says when she accepts awards. the oscars and the other one was golden globes i think. and she has yet to amaze me with her famous acting skills.

  33. frances says:

She hasn’t got any plastic surgery yet! She is the only celebrity who appears with a light make-up in tv! You can watch the Graham Norton show on youtube, she isn’t botoxed at all!

  34. PRINSESS DIGNA SARAVIA says:

    HELL0 HAPPY NEW YEARS 2012..ATT..NICKNAME KATE WINSLET..REALNAME DIGNITY…
