The rest of the world seems as excited and pleased by the election of Barack Obama as most of the U.S. James Bond star Daniel Craig gave Obama a ringing endorsement, and even went so far as to say that the next actor to play the role of Bond should be black.
On the day history was made with the election of the first U.S. black president, actor Daniel Craig has said the next James Bond star should also be black.
Speaking at the opening of Quantum of Solace at the International Film Festival in Rome, Craig sang the praises of America’s president-elect, saying the moment has now arrived for a black 007 too.
Addressing reporters on the red carpet, the 40-year-old said: ‘If we can have a black US president we can have a black James Bond.’
Clearly having being swept away by Obama mania, Craig added: ‘This is as significant as when man landed on the moon.
‘The Obama election is a wake up call for the whole world.
‘I’m a real fan of Obama because I like his political ideas. And I think it’s the right moment for a black James Bond.’
It’s not a bad idea – but I hope Daniel isn’t planning to give up the role any time soon, because he is damn good at it. He’s also quite easy on the eyes. However, if he did ever decide to pass the torch, which black British actor would be a good candidate?
Daniel Craig is shown at the Quantum of Solace premiere in Rome on 11/5/08 and at a photocall for the film in Rome, also on 11/5/08. He is shown with Bond girl Olga Kurylenko and with his girlfriend, Satsuki Mitchell. Credit: PRPhotos.

I can totally see Denzel Washington doing that, though.

I seriously can’t name a single British black actor.
I can totally see Diddy trying to get all up in that. YOU DON’T HAVE A BRITISH ACCENT, DIDDY!!!

C’mon Daniel, let’s not get too carried away. There was enough of a fuss when Bond went blond and blue-eyed (great decision by the way)! While I can’t think of a black british actor to take the role, the beauty is that there is heaps of talent in that area so when the time is right it will probably be an awesome semi-unknown. I think Celebitchy reported DC’s signed on for three more so we’d have at least a 4-6 year wait.

Not sure I want a black James Bond but these two could definitely fill Craig’s shoes: David Harewood (Americans may know him from Blood Diamond – easily the best thing about that film) or Colin Salmon (btw, hotly tipped by the tabs for the part of James Bond when Pierce Brosnan’s contract ended and Craig gor the role) – both brilliant actors with total action hero looks.

What a ridiculous thing to say –get a grip Daniel
There’s nothing at all wrong with a West Indian Bond but Craigs statement was a kneejerk reaction to Obama being elected as the first black president —a racist remark

I second the nomination of Chiwetel Ejiofor!!!

Anon beat me to it, but Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) has got my vote, but only if Daniel Craig ceases to be hot for some reason.

Oh good call on Idris Elba – not so sure about Chiwetel Ejiofor although good actor. My two would be David Harewood and Colin Salmon (links to both in my spammed post which will probably turn up some time tomorrow…) Salmon was actually in the running for the role after the Brosnan contract ended.

Kaiser, I was just about to say Chiwetel Ejiofor! That man is sexy as hell.
Now that someone’s mentioning Idris Elba, though, I might have to go for him. I had a crush on him before I ever saw anything with Chiwetel in it. I actually saw him first in this really obscure miniseries about vampires, playing some kind of vampire-hunting secret agent, and he looks CRAZY good in a suit. Mmph.

Since the Bond name is nothing more than an identity assigned to an agent, I have no objections at all. We’re seriously overdue anyway.
I’d like to nominate Samuel L. Jackson

EJIOFOR! TOTALLY. The man has the chops to pull off just about any type of role.
Still, I wanna keep Craig around for at least a little while longer. It’s not a bad idea, but I think I like the idea of Bond seducing a man to get what he wants for whatever mission just a tiny bit more.

There will only be one true James Bond in my eyes and that is Sean Connery. It doesn’t matter how many movies they make, with white, black, asian, hispanic Bonds down the road, Sean is the only true Bond, James Bond.

How about the next Doctor Who first?
Daniel’s been hanging out with P. Diddy again, hasn’t he?

Anyone but Daniel Craig is fine by me.

Are you people stupid? James Bond is a white British guy and should stay that way. He is an established character. Do black people need to follow whites or something? Why can’t someone finally just invent an iconic black character, with a black back story? Hmmm? One that is ridiculously cool and heroic and smart? We need black superheroes, not a “black Superman”, or “black Aquaman”, or “black Batman”, or whatever. Geesh!

Just to be a stirrer – What!! technically there has already been a deviation in the British part with George Lazenby and Pierce Brosnan
Report this comment as spam or abuse
Enough with P Diddy, he’s not an actor.
And sorry James Bond should never be an American but an actor from the U.K.

James Bond is a white British guy and should stay that way.
Explain that to Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan, they are Scottish and Irish respectively.

Ah but Scotland is part of the UK, even though it now has its own Parliament – ergo Connery may be considered British. I picked Lazenby as my other example as he was Australian; part of the Commonwealth but not British.
