Rooney Mara in a toilet papery Givenchy gown: cheap, busted and awful?

Rooney Mara didn’t actively piss me off at the Oscars. I think it was because it felt like everyone was ignoring her. Yes, her Givenchy gown SUCKED. Hard. Yes, she looked like Spock. Yes, her voice is that weird, nasal, Valley Girl “I’m SO bored” thing. Yes, she squandered an opportunity to A) Have fun with everything or B) Show the world how truly aloof she is. She didn’t piss me off because she just seemed kind of nervous and shy and her dress was so awful that I ended up feeling bad for her.

Rooney claimed she chose this boob-finned, toilet-paper, bandage-y monstrosity the morning of the Oscars – she told Ryan: “I only just picked it this morning. I just was choosing between a few different ones…I feel very honored to be here and I’m excited.” When Rooney was being interviewed on ABC, Robin asked her if she felt like this is “kind of like her Super Bowl?” Because Rooney’s family is all about football, you know. And Rooney made a face and said, “No, it’s very different. I don’t even think about the two in the same sentence.” Haha.

I believe Rooney’s date was her sister Kate Mara – Kate didn’t present or anything, so she had no other reason to walk the red carpet in this boring, beaded Elie Saab other than sisterly love. Mark my words – Kate Mara is NOT happy that Rooney is getting all of this attention. This is a Joan Fontaine-Olivia De Havilland situation, only, you know, a really budget version. With boob fins.

PS… Look at how awful Rooney’s posture is too. Both Mara girls need to STAND UP STRAIGHT. You’re at the Oscars, for the love of God.

    BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…Hate IT!

    • MissM says:

I mosty hate the constant miserable look on her face… girl put a smile on that face!!!!

      • Memory27 says:

I know she’s pretty talented and rich why are you so miserable WTF??

      • Petunia says:

Victoria Beckham and she could start a club, “world’s surliest inhabitants.”

      • Jaye says:

I saw her smile quite a few times. Maybe she’s shy and a bit awkward. And if she WAS smiling to beat the band then folks would be saying that she was on something, as they have been saying about Angelina Jolie.

Bitch don’t smile enough…color that bitch “surly”. Bitch smiles too much…color that bitch high. Bitches can’t win for losing.

  2. Rosalee says:

she looked like a little girl playing with her mother’s bra and the toilet paper sticking out..the worst dress of the evening.

  3. Sisi says:

the dress of the sister looked so much better on tv than in pictures. I loved it on the red carpet coverage, but I hate it when I see it now.

  4. Jen says:

Cheap, busted and awful? Honey, I think you’re getting Rooney mixed up with Angelina.

    • carrie says:

Angie was awful in my opinion (her “sex” hair, her ridiculous pose with the leg,her black dress cut in a black velvet curtain, all in bones):a mix between Morticia and Helena Boham Carter in her worst fashion days without the fun side

  5. carrie says:

1: her sister is all the time like it
2: i like Mara’s dress (looked good on tv)
3:she said she was nervous during an interview

    • Lee says:

I totally agree that Rooney’s dress looked good on TV. I actually loved it last night, but it looks awful in these photos.

I’m mostly concerned with the lady in the background of the last photo – blue satin bandeau top with matching full length gloves? WTF?

  6. Aiobhan says:

They both have the same horrible pose. I have been hating on this girl for about 2 months now and I really want blast her for this dress and hair and just overall demeanor but these photos of her are just plain pitiful. She does the work for me. Givenchy should be ashamed that they made this dress. And I love Givenchy. And why was she nervous? She has not gotten anything all season and had a less than zero chance of winning last night.

Poor Kate. Funny thing is she would have easily been as good at “looking” like Lisbeth as Patricia with Kate and Lisbeth both being red heads. Lisbeth dyed her hair black in the books. As I am typing this I am realizing how much of a dork that I am for remembering that.

    • Petunia says:

I wonder if Rooney and Kate a fight before the show? Their body language is stiff and seemingly angry. And Kate looks peeved. Usually she poses very well. Just a thought.

  7. anjessa says:

Haha, in one picture it looks like Milla Jovovich is laughing at Rooney’s dress.

  8. mia girl says:

This girl is a pill. And watching her be interviewed was like having to take a giant pill without a glass of water.

  9. Amanda says:

Rooney’s dress looked terrible, especially from the waist up, my friend and I died laughing when we saw it. Her hair looked like a wig. I do like the lip color. Girl needs to pop a Xanax next time she walks a red carpet so she doesn’t stand there looking incredibly nervous playing with her hands.

    • Sweettart says:

I’m not sure what it is about that dress, but it reminds me of GOOP’s black illusion Oscar dress that made her boobs look like chicken cutlets.

  10. Hanna says:

But they don’t even look alike. Not even slightly…

  11. Sophie says:

I don’t think it’s a bad dress, it’s just not fitting right at all. Her hair and makeup are gorgeous though.

  12. Esmom says:

You are so right about the posture, I hadn’t really noticed until now. She and Kate really need to stand up straight.

Rooney did fine. I thought her dress was in keeping with her style and she seemed happy and nervous and kind of sweet and humble. She’s so much prettier and seems more accessible when she smiles.

    • Asli says:

How tall is she? I’m really tall, 5’11, and I slouch all of the time so my head doesn’t stick out in a crowd.

She looks awful BTW and I feel bad for her sister. She is NOT happy to be there.

      • MST says:

I wish you could give some of your inches to me. I’m only 5’4.

The dress is okay from a distance, but it does look cheap close up. I am a pretty good seamstress and I could whip up something nicer than that at a fraction of the price. So call me, Rooney!

      • Asli says:

LOL! I wish I could give you some of my inches. It’s not funny being a head or two taller than everyone in pictures. You’d be surprised how many guys have ”the short man-complex.”

I’ve only ever done emboidery but I think I could fix something up that’s way better than what she’s wearing.

  13. Kate says:

This was awful. Why the love from the pundits? Nina Garcia deemed her a “punk” Audrey Hepburn. My ass. She is neither edgy nor chic. This dress is awful. Also, those bangs seriously should’ve grown out by now. How long ago did Dragon Tattoo finish filming?

    • Marianne says:

She has to film the next 2.

      • drawbackwards says:

thank you for pointing that out, Marianne. I was wondering why she didn’t get out of character and go back to her lighter hair… makes sense now.

I think her gown actually has potential to be beautiful on a more curvaceous woman. Rooney is small-chested, so the cut of the bust isn’t flattering. I have seen her in some gowns that fit her body type well, but this one… not so much.

    • Kara Ann says:

Exactly what you said about not edgy or chic!
I don’t get her at all. In any way. Not her fashion, not her attitude, none of it.

  14. Ravensdaughter says:

Speaking of “haters”, you guys can’t lay off Rooney Mara. Note all adjectives above are negative.
I though the dress was consistent with her ongoing avant garde look. I wouldn’t wear it, bit it looked right on her.
According to All Sources Hollywood, you’ll be seeing more of her, so get used to her fashion…

    • Amanda says:

Oh, I must have gotten the URLs mixed up… is this celebenice.com? or celeBITCHY?

    • Aiobhan says:

Oh please! There is NOTHING avante garde about this chick or her style.Everything is from an established fashion house or a designer that is well on his or her way to being established, and not some new designer who is always 2 pennies away from being broke. She is not Bjork,Tilda or even HBC, everything about her is high class bitch in training. If she owned that in stead of being a passive agressive asshat I would swallow my words and commend her.Great that she has work coming to her. She now has to actually prove that she is worth the hype that she and her PR team have been drumming up over the past year, with nothing to show for it.

      • Kara Ann says:

Ooooh, I really liked your post. Good job of summing up Rooney. I just picture her as a bored, entitled, anti-princess…which just makes her more of a princess in my opinion!

    • Ravensdaughter says:

Whatever. Avant garde can describe appearance as well as source. I liked the dress on her. I noted at the ceremony that the people who worked with her on the movie liked her (didn’t the screenplay writer call her “The Roonster”?), and that she smiled. I haven’t seen her smile before.
She’s probably still working on her “Hollywood Persona” and hasn’t figured it out yet. I just feel the need to cut this girl a break, especially after the harrowing performance she gave-it scared the crap out of me. Taking on a role like that shows some serious nerve-and I say that in a positive way.

      • Aiobhan says:

She actually has a gorgeous smile and when she actually remembers that her name is Patricia (and not Fincher’s puppet) and lets down her guard on camera she is very pretty, but her interviews are something that a shy quiet individual would not give. She is reserved, intelligent, and entitled. Shy and reserved are not the same thing. Shy people always seem fearful of even thinking or breathing for fear of being made fun of or just existing. I know because I used to be one. She is leagues above Paris Hilton and the Kartrashians. She graduated from NYU for christmas sake. I wish people would stop turning her into a victim; she is not, no matter how she chooses to pose on the red carpet. From her charity work she has a good and compassionate heart. I don’t think she is pure evil just kinda evil. lol

Her performance was good (certainly not better than Noomi’s). She will be around for the foreseeable future. (Much to my dismay)But she seriously needs to get a grip if she wants to be more than a flavor of the month. She has the talent to do so but we all know how the sexism in Hollywood works: a string of bad interviews and under performing films, in addition to her attitude, and she will be a has been before she knows it. Daniel Craig can get away with it but she will not be able to do the same thing.

  15. mew says:

The front is bad enough but the back is total disaster.

  16. Eva,UK says:

    I like her sister’s dress

  17. normades says:

Very disapointed with Rooney here. We’ve seen her done this look to death for months. I wish she would have taken this oportunity to do something really different and assert her new A-list status.

  18. Marianne says:

I liked Rooney’s dress. She doesn’t choose the convential oscar dress. It probably would have been a bit better if she boobs to fill it out though. And I would loved seeing her wear purple on the carpet.

  19. Muny says:

Kate Mara’s dress is actually Jack Guisso Couture and not Elie Saab. 🙂 Totally looks like an ES design, though…

So, so, so, so glad Rooney didn’t win! Can’t stand her pretentions behind!

  20. LadyJane says:

Rooney looks perfect. One of the best looks on the night. Ethereal and very high fashion – no many could pull of this look but she owns it, with the confidence to leave all accessories at home. I get why Kaiser doesn’t like this dress but thought Penelope Cruz looked amazing – because Kaiser has a very parochial sense of fashion. Fair enough.

  21. eileen says:

Not a fan of her dress or this new style she’s adopting-its way to severe and she’s going to have a hard time getting cast into other roles if she isn’t careful. Just My opinion.
I didn’t know this was her sister! She was in American Horror Story!

  22. hateonit. says:

rooneys face is just…you have to look at it. I don’t hate the dress. the back doesn’t look good but it’s willowy like her. I don’t like her sister at all. I’ve never liked her. I would never guess they’re related. and right now she looks at rooney like ha. you won’t last long.

  23. lucy2 says:

I actually wouldn’t mind the front, if it were different color and material. There’s no saving the back though, that’s just awful. I’m also sick of her hair straight down like that, it looks better parted to the side.
I like her sister, but she looks very uncomfortable, and that dress is a bit Princess Barbie Got Her Arm Caught in the Fabric.

  24. Jill says:

    Dreadful coming and going.

  25. Beatrix says:

you have to admit that RR question comparing the SB to the Oscars was one stupid question. A lot of the interviewers on the carpet were about as dense as it gets – especially whatever blonde was doing the red carpet special on some off-network.

  26. Riana says:

Ouch at that posture. I know someone that slouches just like that and it creeps me out, I wonder if she’s very tall. The dress is God awful but I love Kate Mara, I don’t really see any evidence of a rivalry but whatevs.

Also the spot where she has moles on her back, why does it look like she scratched each one? I noticed each mole has a red circular spot around it.

  27. Lisa says:

    I GET THE DRESS!!!

It’s tight, without being excessive…clingy, languid…sensuous…I even like the color against her skin…love the texture of the design work…the lines of the dress…

Makeup and hair is on point!

It was one of my favorite looks from last evening…

  28. TheOriginalVictoria says:

It did not show or give her curves. It just hang there. There was nothing sensuous about it because she makes it seem dull. Like totally asexual.

I really hated the stank face she gave Robin and I totally wanted to go Rachet Girl and smack the shit out of her.

I would have rather seen Kristen Stewart nominated for Twilizzle than to have to see her miserable self on the carpet all dour and pretentious looking.

  29. Maya says:

I’m not crazy about the dress either, but I do think she has a really beautiful face. And wow, she said she was ‘honored’ to be there and ‘excited’? What an ungrateful bitch! *sarcasm*

  30. anytime says:

rooney is a try hard… no talent and another new celeb trying to buy a career with daddy’s money… her recent nose job looks good tho. yeah and they both need to learn how to pose. looked dumb.

  31. jamminatorr says:

Boob whooshes! Oh yeah and the back looked like masking tape strips.

    nasty bangs.

I have had enough with this entitled nasty heiress. She’s only a slight step up from Paris Hilton.

  32. Petunia says:

Gads, hate her pee-pot hairdo. And that “I ate a lemon” expression she always wears.

  33. D. says:

I like the front, and the all white look, but I don’t care for the back. This dress initially struck me as uncontroversially tasteful, so I’m surprised by how divisive it is – I keep seeing it on both “best-dressed” & “worst-dressed” lists.

Has any other young actress in recent memory had such a great first year in the spotlight (e.g. critical acclaim, nom for top acting prize in your field, securing a high-profile movie franchise, etc.)? She even has a reliable set of rabid stans & rabid haters giving her free publicity online. I’m curious to see what types of characters she takes on between filming the Dragon Tattoo sequels.

LOL at the headline, though – the ones comprising only negative adjectives (e.g. “[Insert celeb name] on the red carpet: vomit-inducing, vile, and deserves to be torn apart by rabid dogs, doused in acid, and shot directly into space?”) crack me up.

  34. Mrs. Darcy says:

Oh wow, I had no idea they were related, love the DeHavilland Fontaine reference though! I don’t know why but I don’t hate this. I should, but I don’t. She’s not trying to pretend she has boobs, yes some padding might have helped but I think it’s elegant in a doily toilet papery way. She’s a pretty girl and the hair is an obvious homage to Audrey Hepburn. I haven’t seen her Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, can’t imagine she is better than Noomi Rapace though.

  35. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I think Rooney’s date was actually her (supposed) boyfriend. He didn’t do the carpet, but was sitting next to her during the awards. He’s seems to cool and nice for her.

  36. Turd Fergussen says:

Worst dress of the night. AWFUL. There’s not one attractive thing about Rooney Mara, from her horrible severe hair to her posture to her bland, peaked little face to her horrible attitude. Her sister definitely got the looks in the family.

I am ready for this bitch to disappear.

  37. Dee Cee says:

She looks like the psycho crazed victim of everything ready to erupt and kill something..

  38. JudyJudyJudy says:

    loved Rooney’s dress..very elegant and sexy/breezy.

sad that she and her sister couldn’t walk together in one way….buuuut…..

hated Kate’s falling off nightgown that she had to lift to step forward in. Like anyone cared to wait that long for her to catch up to Rooney so Rooney HAD to go solo or take 10 hours to walk the carpet.

  39. Kim says:

Awful and she has a terrible personality. He red carpet interviews were not good – she came across very affected & she thinks she is so cool.

  40. buell says:

Milla looks like she is telling Rooney she wore that same thing as Leeloo in The Fifth Element.

  41. keri says:

you know, perhaps she’s keeping the fug haircut to film the remaining two movies. God, let’s hope that’s the excuse.

  42. launter says:

Rooney Mara wasn’t one of the stars people were exctited for. There were a few times there were cutways to her but she was smiling and looked happy atleast. it was funny when Billy Crystal called Angelina Jolie the orginal girl with the dragon tatoo. I wonder how she felt about that.

  43. Eilenn Marter says:

I like that pink dress except that part where her arm is going through.

  44. Camille (The original) says:

Awful all around with these two. Ugh.

  45. SFRowGuy says:

I don’t like the way the bodice is cut, and what in the hell is going on in the back? You think someone might have told Rooney, ‘Don’t turn around’.

  46. Claudia says:

How have I never seen the De Havilland/Fontaine post before? That was fantastic! 🙂 (Ooh interesting fact: Joan Fontaine adopted the sister of a family friend in Peru back in the 50s I think– but they’re estranged and apparently hate each other.) I actually didn’t realize they were still both alive.

I kind of get the vibe that there is a level of competition between the Mara sisters too.

  47. marie says:

Cheap definitely. I do not understand the fuss about her. She has hard elfin like features. She has not an ounce of sex appeal. I don’t think she is attractive at all.

  48. AnnieC says:

I like Rooney’s dress actually but it’s not a good colour on her! Also, I hate her fringe-trauma! Yuck, too much!

  49. MayaMae says:

Nina Garcia was raving like crazy about Rooney’s look last night.

I’m just about as shy and socially awkward as this girl, I can’t imagine what you guys would say about me. Lucky I’m not rich and famous.

  50. Amy says:

Rooney’s boyfriend was there–Charlie McDowell (son of Mary Steenburgen). I don’t think he posed with her in the pictures but I did see a picture of him there.

  51. GoodCapon says:

Her interview with Ryan Seacrest clearly made her look like she was not interested and wanted to bolt out of there quickly. Yes, I know it’s Ryan Seacrest, but something about her dismissive answers put me off. Even other shy actors can be more gracious with their answers.

  52. Madchen says:

That dress says Sydney Opera House to me.

  53. Lucy says:

    tranny pinnochio…

  54. B says:

I loved the dress (as I loved the entire Riccardo Tisci’s haute couture collection, jewelry and presentation included – I thought there was something vaguely “Salanderian” going on there). I was happy to see such an unconventional, at times frail beauty as Mara walk down the red carpet in this. She was awkwardly sophisticated. Loved the whole ensamble and the only ring (which she was nervously holding onto) as jewelry: perfection!

How can people call it “toilet papery” is beyond me.
Haters should give the girl a BIG BIG break.

  55. Kaotic says:

This is the only website I’ve seen that has said Rooney’s dress was bad. I’ve seen at least three so far that say she was one of the best dressed.
