Nicole Richie says Harlow doesn’t know she’s famous: “I try and let her be a kid”

Nicole Richie covers the April issue of Flare magazine to promote her upcoming television show, “Fashion Star” (also starring Jessica Simpson), which will air on NBC. While the cover shot leaves something to be desired, the rest of the photoshoot (which I’ve included at the bottom of this post) is much more flattering in terms of styling. At present, the portions of released interview are rather scant, but I’ve managed to rustle up a few illuminating tidbits. Among other concerns, Nicole appears to be a very devoted mother who worries how Hollywood will eventually treat her two children, Harlow Winter Kate (4) and Sparrow James Midnight (2). At the moment, Nicole is all for keeping them in the dark about their fame as well as that of their parents:

Harlow doesn’t know she’s famous: “She has no idea that she has two lines named after her — I try and let her be a kid.”

She’s a morning person: “I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, every morning, so I can be alone. I don’t have anywhere to be, but mentally, I like to go downstairs and drink my coffee … I’m telling you, it changes my entire day.”

On Hollywood rolel models: “I was just talking to a friend of mine who has two little girls about a certain singer whose name I won’t mention. He was really upset, saying she wasn’t a good role model for his kids. But here’s the thing: that girl is 20-something, so she shouldn’t be a role model to your little girls. She’s human, and it’s unrealistic to put people on a pedestal and expect that they’re not going to make mistakes.”

[From Flare]

Nicole sounds so grounded here and worlds apart from her old DUI self, who would never dream of getting out of bed before sunrise to drink coffee and enjoy a few fleeting moments to herself. To be certain, she’s eclipsed Paris Hilton’s potential maturity by an exponential rate.

One thing that I am curious about is which singer Nicole is referring to in terms of a bad role model. If I had to put my finger on it, I’d guess it was Katy Perry, whose bubblegum, sugary image places her music inside of virtually every preschool- and elementary-aged dance recital that I’ve ever attended within the past few years. My own daughter’s friends adore Katy and think that she shoots fireworks “out of her heart.” If they only knew.

She seems to have settled down and grown up. I think she is a good mother and I can relate to her early morning coffee time (it’s wonderful to enjoy coffee at dawn).

  2. lem says:

I’d guess she is talking about Miley.

  3. Kooky says:

I think she was talking about Rihanna being the bad role model.

    • Bite me says:

20 something singers there r a lot of the out there

    • Tapioca says:

It would be funny if that’s who she’s referring to, as Rihanna (& KP & Ke$ha & Britney & Xtina & Beyonce & Gaga) actually had to WORK for her fame – Nicole Richie is a Lucky Sperm Club member who’s never done an honest day’s work in her life and had every opportunity handed to her due solely to her surname.

Rihanna may dress like a hooker and dance like she’s working the pole, but as a role model for hard graft she (and her fellow glorified strippers) definitely ranks above Daddy’s Little Princess!

    • jelynn says:

That was my first thought, too

  4. Bite me says:

Motherhood has done wonders for her 🙂

  5. Cirque28 says:

She looks pretty, but geez, there’s a lot going on with that white dress. To what event would you wear such a dress? The Porn Star Cotillion?

    • Ailine says:

I think the dress looks fine. God forbid a woman wear something sexy once in a while!

      • Cirque28 says:

Wha? My point wasn’t that it is overly sexy, but that it has a girlish, demure cut and then goes all boob-tastic in the front.

    • Ailine says:

Just saw the words “porn star”. I didn’t see anything porny about the dress. It just looks playful and sexy. You could wear it to a day party maybe.

  6. Sisi says:

I can relate! There’s hardly any greater indulgence for me than to have the house for myself in the morning and start the day in peace.

    • brin says:

      Amen!

    • PrettyTarheel says:

Exactly! I am working from home on the back porch (it’s so nice in Charleston), and it’s soothing. Getting in a little CB just adds to the relaxation-calms me down before I go face a day of drama.

  7. Ailine says:

I think she is talking about Rhianna. Celebrities shouldn’t be role models for anything except fashion and exercise. Second, promo shots for her show make Nicole look like Rachel Zoe. I don’t know if this is a subconscious thing on her part, since Zoe styled (trained) her in the beginning, but it’s becoming more apparent to me.

Third, it kind of irks me that she has two fashion lines named after her daughter. Her daughter should have the right to her own name. What if she hates fashion when she grows up? What if she doesnt appreciate being attached to such high profile projects. It’s weird when celebs treat their kids as extensions of their own brand and seek to commodify them at such an early age. I mean, maybe she’d like to be anonymous.

  8. birdie says:

Guess she is talking about Rihanna!!

  9. Celebasshat says:

    @Ailine….. Word!

  10. sam says:

I also think she is talking about Rihanna going back to chris brown. Little girls need to learn it is not ok for someone you love to hit you. When the see someone famous get back together with someone that does that it sends a very dangerous message.
Why does that white dress remind me of she-ra?

  11. corny says:

    um..Nicole who?

  12. Dusty says:

UGH Another generation coming up of being famous for being famous.

    • LunaT says:

      Yah, right?
Um, Nicole, I think there are lots of people who didn’t know your kid is famous. I don’t even know where tf to buy your clothes or that you’d named them after your kid. If you’re kid can’t inherit ego or an inflated sense of entitlement, I think she’ll be okay.

  13. skuddles says:

I like Nicole Richie but I’m confused by the reference to her being “famous”…. what has she done? I recall years back she was in a reality series with Valtrex queen Paris Hilton and of course, she’s Lionel Richie’s daughter and she married a musician – but is that it?? Does that a famous person make??

    • vicky says:

Took the words right out of my mouth!

    • PJ46 says:

Finally a voice of reason. Lionel Richie is famous. I’m not trying to be a mean, but Nicole is “famous” because she hung out with Paris. Her husband is a musician we barely hear from anymore.
Don’t get me wrong, her kids are adorable. I must admit that if I walked past them on the street I wouldn’t recognise them.

      • Pilar says:

Well i dont see why you say she is famous for hanging out with Paris Hilton. Its not Hilton is more accomplished or less of a member of the lucky sperm club. At least Nicole seems to have grounded herself and found some purpose in life the high life. Paris is still running around like she was 10 years ago.

    • LastDaze says:

My sentiments exactly. Nicole and her kids are known to the public by association.

    • Carolyn says:

Methinks Nicole will totally whitwash her history. Will she tell her about her own skanky drug taking past? What a hypocrite she is. It’s great that she has seemingly turned her life around but to portray herself a saint and put down others for the same behaviours she did herself..you’ve got to be kidding.

  14. CaramelKiss says:

I love how people JUST KNOW who she’s talking about…

  15. Dibba says:

Her kid is famous? Someone forgot to tell me. Why is she famous?

    • RocketMerry says:

Ahahah, was thinkin’ the same here!
Her kids are no Jolie-Pitt kids. She can relax on that.

  16. Cathy says:

I don’t care for the white dress, it just rubs me wrong. Also who picked out that outfit she’s wearing on the magazine cover? All I can say about that is What the Hell is it.

    • jwoolman says:

I like the way she looks in that whatever on the magazine cover. Can’t figure out what a person could do in it other than pose for a magazine cover, but can’t complain since that’s exactly what she was doing… But it’s still nice to look at.

  17. Jane says:

Well, Harlow shouldn’t know why she’s famous because what is she famous for again?

  18. MST says:

I always thought this woman was homely, and what is she famous for again?

  19. Lisa says:

Look at her, then look at Paris Hilton’s drunk text video. It’s obvious whose brain is still living the simple life.

  20. Sarah says:

Some people just completely lack self-awareness, huh?

  21. hebrokemyheart says:

nicole richie is an amazing person

  22. sm255 says:

I’m guessing when she said ‘famous’, she may have meant that she came from a famous FAMILY. Lionel, then Nicole (although that was a bit in infamy)…maybe Harlow?

  23. Medusa says:

Amazing to see how much she has grown up in terms of attitude.

You can even see it in her face. She looks so beautiful lately, and seems to have attained a bit of the real kind of ‘sexiness’ that’s not the try-hard kind. Pretty rare in Hollywood these days.

  24. Christy says:

Even though I like her sarcastic sense of humor on twitter, as I share that with her, she still bugs me to no tomorrow. Don’t know why exactly.

And yeah, the comment about her daughter not knowing she’s famous is kinda out there. She’s NOT famous….

  25. Kim says:

Harlow isnt famous. Nicole is barely famous.

  26. DesertRose says:

Why is everyone saying Harlow isn’t famous? Do we not look at pictures of this child on sites and in magazines? Even if it is her mother that is famous, most kids do not have their pics in national media every week. I get that many of you may disparage her because of how she obtained the fame – The Simple Life – but she doesn’t seem all that bad now, and she and her whole family are most definitely famous.

  27. Shamozzle says:

Eh, still dont like her or her “fashion” lines. I think she loves to think she’s a someone, yet we all know she ain’t.

  28. Zoe says:

Her face is striking…know it sounds silly…but I love looking at her face. She’s very photogenic and has that unique look which makes her stand out, even with much more beautiful women in the picture.

  29. Kimberly says:

    quick question

what’s she famous for? Was she in some amazing movie I missed? Was she amazing in fashion week? Or is she just famous for being a crackhead that turned her life around and married a guy from good char???

Still trying to figure out if she’s famous or just some rich chick that we recognize when we see her face . . .you know kinda like you recognize your barista?

    • Pilar says:

Good charlotte is not relevant. Hasnt been since the early 2000’s. Joel is kept relevant by his nicole association.

  30. jwoolman says:

I remember back when she was high on something and was driving the wrong way on the highway. She was on some talk show before her court date, and she really impressed me (especially in contrast to such as Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan). She made no excuses, didn’t rail against the justice system. Just matter-of-factly said she expected jail time because it was her second DUI in a relatively short time (some number if years), which did worry her. She showed up in court on time and appropriately dressed and then completed her probation requirements without any fuss. No smear campaigns against the judge as we’ve seen with Paris and Lindsay, for instance. It didn’t seem that her dad was trying to pull any strings for her either. I liked the lack of drama. She did indeed grow up.

  31. Sparkly says:

I know I’m pretty late catching up on the site here, but I think she may have been talking about Taylor Swift. I have SO MANY moms telling me how Taylor Swift is such an amazing role model for young girls. I completely disagree, personally, but lots of parents seem to be putting her on that particular pedestal.
