Kristen Stewart: “I didn’t want to play a Disney-style heroine, I’m more like Joan of Arc”

I hate this new trend of making a “preview” of a trailer. Yesterday, I watched a “sneak peek” of a new trailer for Prometheus (FAAAASSSYYY!!), and now I’m watching the sneak peek of the new trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman. Why?!?! Why not just release the damn trailer for the love of God. I know it’s to build interest and suspense, but IT’S A TRAILER. We don’t need a sneak peek of a trailer. But in case you’re interested, here’s the sneak peek:

I should note that back in November of last year, the studio already released a teaser trailer – you can see it here. I think there’s a second teaser floating around too. Anyway, in addition to the sneak peek, the studio also released this video with some behind-the-scenes action and cast interviews:

The set design looks gorgeous, it really does. It will be interesting to see this film simply for the costume and set design pr0n.

In other Kristen Stewart news, she gave a short interview to Premiere France to preview SWATH. The Twihard sites found someone to translate!

Revisiting Snow White today is before all a look and attitude business. Fun, funny, and coloured to one side; dark, tortured and gothic to the other. Speaking of look, a true shock aesthetic is waiting for us in Pinewood’s corridor when Snow White/Kristen Stewart heads to us wearing the medieval armor that she wears in the movie.

“I didn’t want to play a Disney-style heroine,” says the actress directly. “I mean, come on look at me, I’m more like Joan of Arc right? In our version, Snow White’s a warrior.”

A warrior that spends almost the all time yomping in the forest next to a quiet huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, the handsome Thor) and bringing together an army to evict the queen of her kingdom. If you hoped a scene where she’s baking an apple pie while humming Someday My Prince Will Come, you might wait a long time.

“It’s good ’cause when I was a kid, I was never dressed up as a princess. My thing was more Dracula”, she says with a smile, aware of the impact that has that kind of statement when the world still see her as Bella Swan in Twilight. “But we’re not here to play differences game, she says just before she was going back to the set. Before you go see the movie, reread the Grimm’s version and you’ll see that we stayed very close to it.”

I thought you guys would like to dissect her comments with the same furor that you had for Jessica Biel yesterday in that post about Biel’s W Magazine cover. Biel claimed she “never identified with girls” or girly things. Kristen is saying basically the same thing – she’s not interested in playing princesses. She wants to play warriors and tomboy badasses. Judge away.

In one last piece of K-Stew news, Star Magazine reports this week that Robert Pattinson and Kristen enjoyed their week-long stay in Paris so much that Sparkles plunked down $1 million for a new little Parisian pied-à-terre that they will share. Apparently, their conflicting work schedules were bothering them, and Kristen is so excited that Sparkles made the commitment. It’s probably crap, but who knows?

False he didn’t buy anything in Paris, they were just famewhoring with Twilight Dvd who come last week in Europe coupled with the new On the Road’s trailer. Walter Sales (On the road director was also there. There is pictures with him and them at a restaurant.)
    Typical famewhoring.
Also, did she really compare herself to Jeanne d’Arc? Wow. Is she crazy? Jeanne fighted because of her Faith. She was also manipulated by the power in place then burn alive for some bullshit reasons. She is a huge personality here in France. It is disguting to disregard her legacy to our Country like that.
By the way, I don’t care about her comment on girls. Everybody who had seen her, can see that she isn’t girly more like a tomboy… An angry emo tomboy who can’t close her mouth.
By the way, it is funny that she doesn’t have a real sentences in these trailer when SHE IS the MAIN character.

Edit: In Mirror Mirror, Snow White will also be a fighter even if it will be sometimes in a playful way.

she’s not talking literally. She’s talking about archetypes. Joan of Arc as an archetype is that of female warrior. Disney Princesses archetype are about damsels in distress. She’s just talking about a more proactive sort of archetype in terms of the princess she plays.

KStew post! Blood in the water, I repeat there is blood in the water!! The sharks are circling!!

      Defcon 5 go go go!

    • girram says:

Jeez…what did she ever do to you? You sound really angry.

    • Snow says:

I get it. Although, I’m not upset to the extent that you are; I’m not French so I don’t feel like KStew’s soiling my national history. For me it’s more of a, “Bitch, please” thing. Joan was so much more than a badass warrior character. She was a person who actually existed, and faced terrifying circumstances when just a girl of thirteen and was able to face those circumstances simply because her faith was so strong, and that faith never waned. I feel like she deserves more respect than “Oh, yeah. She was pretty cool.”

I err on the side of liking Kristen Stewart, but lately I find that the more she opens her mouth the more ignorant I find her to be.

      • Michele says:

Joan of Arc was a warrior. Most people know her historically as such. She led the French troops to numerous victories just like Kristen’s character in Snow White. When Kristen made that remark she was suited up in armor most likely filming a battle scene. She was using Joan of Arc as a comparison in a positive manner. I don’t understand why you’re upset about her innocent comparison.

      • Snow says:

She was a thirteen year old girl, who gained a following and fought in battles and incurred injuries you would never want your child to have. She led a revolution and then ended up burned alive. She’s not your archetype badass character, I think we’ve been desensitized to the reality of the situation because of the Hollywood Polish we surround ourselves with. We can’t even respect the dead without reducing them to the cult of personality. I’m not uber upset about it, you may have been addressing the original poster, but I feel it warrants at least a small amount of concern.

I take no issue with Kstew, it’s mostly about what this comment section says about our level of awareness. If that gets misinterpreted as me crying and screaming behind my computer screen, I’m not sure how responsible I am for that assessment.

  2. marie says:

ehh, nothing really to dissect. a lot of girls prefer playing what’s considered the boys roles as opposed to the girl ones. When I was younger my brother, cousins (mostly girls) and I all played Voltron-and I believe all of us fought to not be the princess-we wanted to kick, karate chop and flip..

  3. M says:

The article says she came in wearing her armor from set so she’s comparing her costume to more Joan of Arc than Disney. I thought this would be useful to point out before everyone that hates her goes off half-cocked.

  4. cmc says:

I don’t see Kristen’s statement as a direct criticism of other girls like Jessica Biel’s. Jessica was basically like “other girls are so silly, but me? I’m awesome! I’m not like THEM!” Kristen is saying “obviously, I’m a tomboy. You know it, too.” And she’s totally right. I couldn’t see her as a Disney Princess, but I could see her as Joan of Arc. Maybe not well-acted/well-done, but at least her general look and persona seem to swing way more in that direction.

    • ShazBot says:

      co-sign.

Who are these women who lump all other women together and say “I’m not like you”. WTF is that about? As if we’re all the same. I just want to give Biel a big “Oh, honey” head shake. She could learn a lot from some pretty kickass women.

  5. ninal says:

Not the same as Biel. Biel’s basically betraying her own gender with sweeping generalizations and wanting a pat on the back for it.

Kristen’s just saying she didn’t want to play cheesy ass princess stuff as a kid. How’s that anti-woman? If anything it’s anti-cliche and gender role-ing.

And she should get a pat on the back for that, because I hate the whole “princess pink” culture that’s forced on young girls too. This stepford version of femininity is gross, and Disney’s partly to blame for it.

    • Ycnan says:

So agree too. Glad most people here see it the same way I do. Totally different that Jessica’s comments.

And I despise the whole Disney princess culture as well (waiting for my prince to rescue me). But I’ll say they are trying to change it up a bit. Tangled was quite good and the princess was a bit of a fighter.

      • ninal says:

Tangled was way cute, and so was Mulan.

But what I HATE is all the merchandising that’s pushed at kids in stores, all pink pictures of creepy smiling princesses on pants and shirts and blankets and everything else. It all emphasizes being ornamental and passively pleasant. I mean my kid had a b-day party and got all this “disney princess” makeup and vanity mirrors and heeled pumps and it’s like “she’s five!” lol

  6. Marianne says:

A preview for a trailer may seem silly..but it worked. We’re here discussing right?

  7. Rux says:

Eh, I buy her being a tomboy more so than Jessica Biel; that bitch lives to dress up and get girlie; her statement is bullshit. KStew I can believe but I do not think she is saying that she does not relate to girls; I just think she likes to play a tougher girl. I wanted to be GI Joe Lady Jane or Scarlett even the Baroness because they were bad ass bitches and I did not want to be a princess but I had girl friends and I associated with them quite well. We all had our part and I was usually Dark Queen or some shit. Not everyone wants to be a princess.

  8. Michele says:

In fairness, when she said she was more Joan of Arc than a Disney princess, she was wearing armor while filming. That is most likely why she compared herself to Joan of Arc in this interview. Not every girl is a girly girl. I was a notorious tomboy and still see traces of it carried over in my adulthood. I like Kristen because she doesn’t feel this need to conform to Hollywood standards and stereotypes. Sure she’s a little rough around the edges but I kinda like that about her.

  9. cecizahn says:

Why don’t give her a chance…she’s a good actress and SWTHM looks like is going to be a great movie. I think when she says about princess she’s saying that she doesnt want a girl that waits to be saved.
And yes, a preview of a preview is stupid

  10. bluhare says:

Yeah, because when I think of Kristen Stewart I’m reminded of Jeanne d’Arc.

  11. deb says:

“It’s good ’cause when I was a kid, I was never dressed up as a princess. My thing was more Dracula”
could be Shiloh saying this several years down the line. Although maybe not so much Dracula as Pirates and Nutcracker Soldier.

  12. Dibba says:

Last photo of her is great!

  13. littlestar says:

Dear gahd I love that black leather jacket she is wearing.

  14. Lindsay says:

    Cosign, Asli.

  15. Wif says:

How is Bella Swan *not* like a Disney princess?

  16. mel says:

I don’t agree that she was saying the same thing as Biel…especially if you look at other interviews Biel has done saying she was too pretty to get certain roles…I’ve never heard Stewart talk like that. Its obvious Stewart has friends and she isn’t making a living off Sparkles. Super excited to see the movie!

  17. geekychic says:

    +1, Asli!
I get what she is saying:when I was a really little, Cinderella was my fav, when I was around ten, Lion King (and later Mulan) were my cartoons because they were both confronted with difficult situations (and actually, Mulan was much more active about them-she did something immediately,it took years for Simba to even acknowledge it).
Not every girl wants to be passive (I hope most of the born into this day and age don’t!), and there is a huge difference between those “I don’t get girls, boys are the best and I hang around them all the tie bc I’m COOL.” girls and what she said.

  18. ok says:

I love Kristen ans she is a tomboy

  19. marlee says:

I have yet to see a preview/trailer/sneak peek of SWATH with any lines from KStew. Or really any serious footage of KStew. Is there one out there that I’m not seeing? Also, why not give her any time in the previews? Is it to keep the KStew mystery (will she or will she not be as terrible as she was in Twilight?) alive until June? Cause its kind of working for me.

  20. Alice says:

I’m more surprised at the fact that she even knows who Joan of Arc is. According to Stewart, her teachers failed her, so how would she know who Joan of Arc is? Plus, all things considered, she doesn’t seem very smart.

    • suzie says:

when she says her teacher’s failed her, she means that in the beginning of her career as a child she was in public school and the teachers didn’t communicate with her or parents to make it work. she switched out and had an onset tutor. she graduated high school in 2008. Also, there’s this thing called the internet and google, which allows you to find information on various people quickly.

  21. Kelly says:

“Alice” how many message board are you gonna go on to bash Kristen. I mean don’t you already smear ted c board.

  22. Angel says:

    This.

I mean, that is really quite the spin there. And also, offensive.

Are we now implying that by saying you identity more as a Joan of Arc Warrior type, rather than A Disney Princess type, you are disassociating yourself with other women? As in, you aren’t feminine/are a tomboy (i.e ‘like a boy’) because you dont feel like a disney princess? Because I don’t think that is what Kristen was saying. Not at ALL.

In my opinion, the hidden misogyny was in Kaiser’s comments here, not Kristen’s.

  23. Camille (The original) says:

The movie looks good, I’m looking forward to seeing it. It will tide me over until The Hobbit comes out anyway lol.

  24. mia girl says:

I’m channeling my inner K-Stew as I breathe out of my mouth and roll my eyes at the idea that what she said is the same as what Biel said. Really???

You know if Emma Stone had said this most on this site would be saying “yah, girl power… this is no Taylor Swift” But this girl, can’t cut a break on this site. I know she’s said some dumb things in the past, but this is not one of them.

I guess Stewart was right when she recently shared with Jennifer Lawrence on upcoming fame… “Welcome to the world where everything you say gets turned into [something it’s not]”

  25. JuliaDomna says:

“I mean, come on look at me, I’m more like Joan of Arc right?…”

What the heck does this even mean?

    • mia girl says:

In context of the interview, it means she was on set in costume and referring to her costumer to make a point…

      from the above article:
“a true shock aesthetic is waiting for us in Pinewood’s corridor when Snow White/Kristen Stewart heads to us wearing the medieval armor that she wears in the movie.”
