Victoria Beckham, size 2 fashion designer: “I stand for the general public here”

Victoria Beckham covers the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK, and I’m not crazy about the photo shoot. Yes, Posh’s body snapped back about two seconds after she gave birth, and while I’m happy for her, I’m kind of tired of Posh doing these kinds of “lounging around in a bustier” photo shoots. The problem seems to be that Posh thinks she’s one of us. She thinks she’s “normal”. She says so in the Bazaar interview when she’s discussing how she designs, and how she can’t relate to the six-foot-tall amazon models she works with. Because although Posh is a size 2 (if that), she’s SHORT. Thus, in Posh’s words, “I stand for the general public here.” O RLY?

She famously snacks on edamame beans, and frozen grapes and endures a diet of steamed fish and raw vegetables to keep a svelte size 6 frame. But Victoria Beckham has insisted that she is just like the average woman, especially when it comes to her catwalk creations.

In a stunning photoshoot for the British edition of high fashion glossy Harper’s Bazaar, the married mother of four said that she feels she represents the general public – when it comes to testing out her own designs. The revealing interview was accompanied by glamorous photos of the star in swimwear, which was very reminiscent of old Hollywood actresses and pin-ups Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.

Victoria explained that since she became a designer she prefers to wear her own clothes to feel more at one with the customer. But last year she was left disappointed she couldn’t try on her designs as she was pregnant with her much longed-for daughter Harper.

She told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘We always joke that we have this fabulously gorgeous 17-year-old model who is six-foot-whatever and then I say “OK, I’m going to put it on. I stand for the general public here”. It’s how I work. I found it really difficult when I was pregnant and I couldn’t do that. It’s part of the process – I’ll stand here in my knickers and start draping fabric over myself. It was very hard when I didn’t have my body.’

But with the average British woman wearing a size 16, and certainly unable to afford a dress from the Victoria Beckham collection – adored by the A-list – and costing thousands, it’s a claim that stretches the imagination somewhat.

[From The Mail]

CB and I figured out that Posh identifies herself as a size 6 in the UK size charts, which is a 2 in the American size charts. I’d still claim that Posh is probably a zero or even a 00. And no, I can’t relate to that. I’ve been doing a “get healthy” thing lately, and I have lost some weight, but I know I will never be a size 2. That’s not my goal, that’s not my body type and I personally can’t relate to women who are a size 2 (as opposed to women who just claim to be a size 2 when they are obviously a size 12). This isn’t vanity sizing – this is just delusion, where a size 2 Posh Beckham thinks she represents the “average” woman. Still, I’m not really that offended. It’s just Posh.

    hahahaha! delusional.

  2. brin says:

OK, Posh, just don’t stand too close to the rest of us because we’ll all look huge next to you.
    *Kudos on eating healthier, K.*

  3. Marie says:

I can see what she means about being like the rest of the general public height wise, but waist size no honey, you are not.

  4. Jazzmin says:

The average woman does not look like a skeleton with designer clothes on. The average woman looks like Christina Hendricks, Jessica Simpson, The Kardashian sister etc. You don’t represent the average woman Victoria, get real.

    • Hikkilove says:

Yeah… I dont think the average looks like them either. They are all rather generously endowed. I dont think you could look at any celebrity as bring average because none of them are. Thats the point.

  5. lflips says:

The years of starvation have obviously gone to her brain. Perhaps she was like the average woman before she lost 30 lbs and started getting plastic surgery…

  6. Guest says:

The average size in the U.S. is 11/12, so I doubt Posh can understand this. Some of these celebs just live in a bubble.

  7. phaksi says:

She is obviously delusional if she thinks she is “normal” but I still like her.

  8. BW says:

Wow, that last photo in the green granny panties? How did she have 4 children if she doesn’t have room for a uterus between her hip bones?

    • Psyren says:

LOL. This. I saw that last pic and thought wow, how does she not poke holes in her clothes with hipbones that sharp?

  9. labyrinth says:

i feel advance worry for her daughter, she may be a great mom to her sons who have followed their father’s athletic lifestyle, but her new mini me will grow up with expectations from her mother to be a fashion doll, pressured to be thin or else feel inadequate.

    • Louminary says:

      Yes! I’ve always thought this!

And why are we supposed to admire a with very, very obvious self-esteem and body issues? I think she is a terrible role model

  10. lucy2 says:

Relating to the average person height wise, compared to a 6′ model? Sure. Everything else? No.

Her dresses cost thousands? They seem fairly basic. I’ve liked a few of them, but that kind of pricing is not feasible for the “general public”.

    • Pamela says:

      “Her dresses cost thousands?”

I didn’t realize that either. I think I equated “simpler” design with “simpler” price tags. 🙂
I think a lot of her designs are nice–I just had it in my head that they were more geared towards the mainstream. I guess not.

    • LAK says:

Her dresses are also sized very small and stop at 12 [UK sizing]. Meaning, depending on your size, you have to try 2 sizes UP in order to fit into her sizes. I think she makes up the clothes to sell/lend/gift those celebrities who aren’t within her size ranges.

That said, they are very well tailored.

  11. Floridaseaturtle says:

Agreed, Posh is harmless, but normal??…no..lol. Frozen grapes?, no thanks. Here’s the normal ‘me’ walking around town… IN MY DREAMS!!

(oops, tiny warning – might be NSFW.. even though it is JUST a burger commercial) 🙂

  12. Me says:

She’s one of those naturally tiny women who’d likely only be a size 4 if she put on 30 lbs. She’s hot and super photogenic but I agree about the lounging around in a bustier for photoshoots thing.

    • kit says:

Google early Spice Girls pictures and you’ll see she’s not naturally tiny. Even then in interviews she talked about having to work hard for her figure. She works even harder now to keep herself this size.
I do like the photo shoot and I can’t hate on her because of the torment she puts herself through for her image. That diet is not for me, I would end up robbing a chocolate shop out of frustration.

    • LAK says:

She is not naturally tiny. She is infamous for rigidly sticking to the diet in the article no matter the place or occassion, as well as exercising portion control.

  13. fabgrrl says:

There is NOTHING “reminiscent of Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe” in those photos! At least not the ones I saw. Ug! Sure, slap on a 50s style, full coverage bathing suit, and take pictures using a black and white, or Kodachrome filter, and you are Dame Liz. Sure. Lazy-@ss photo-shoot, if you ask me.

  14. marlee says:

I’d just like to use this opportunity to invite old Kimmy K to take a look at what a size 2 actually looks like.

  15. Jaschintaz says:

I don’t think she’s that short…I remember reading somewhere that she is at least 5′ 7″…

  16. Jayna says:

I always liked her because she has stated she isn’t a true beauty and jokes about her husband being the beautiful one in the family.

    • AnnaLeigh says:

I like her too. I think she’s makes the most of her assets. And she’s had 4 kids! That’s impressive.

  17. HadleyB says:

Well, she works really hard for her size 2. And I have noticed since the bad economy people have gotten thinner .. lack of food? Not eating or not eating as much due to costs?

Some of her comments I don’t agree with but I will say this for Vicks .. she earned her company, she worked at it , she was with David before he became ultra famous, she wants her body to be a certain size and does what needs to be done to keep it there.

I really don’t see her being anorexic, but to hate on someone who has massive will power? I think it’s great she can do it, more power to her. Do we hate on those who don’t have it and tell them to put the twinkies down? No, that would be horrible right?

    • fabgrrl says:

Possibly because unemployed people have more time to work out? and more time to prepare a healthy, home-cooked meal?

      • Trashaddict says:

Sorry guys, but the unemployed people I’m seeing are probably losing weight because they’re stressed over the possibility of losing their freaking houses and not being able to pay the utility bill or to gas up the car. And I am not exaggerating. I had more requests for medical dispensation not to shut off utilities in the last 2 years than I had in the 5-10 before that. Working out?! Who are you kidding?

  18. Lisa says:

She represents me, and that’s all I care about. 😉

  19. Mara says:

I think women with some meat on the bones are more attractive and sexy like Sofia Vergara or Kate Winslet .This woman is obsess to be very thin and she is not a good role model for young girls who probably wants to look like her.

  20. Incredulous says:

Any chance we could turn this around and ask all the women and gay men on this site – at what point are men too fat or too skinny, in your opinion?

    • Happy21 says:

      Hmmm…Interesting point.

I don’t find men that are skinny attractive in the slightest. A little meat on the bones or some muscle mass is always good 🙂

      If a man was a women’s size 2 or 4, he’d be dreadful!

    • fabgrrl says:

My husband was too skinny when he weighed less than me :^)

I’m actually serious — he is 6 inches taller than me. Not to say that I am a skinny mini, but if I were stretched out half a foot I would be scrawny.

    • Lisa says:

Great question. I love skinny guys, but when they look gaunt and have concave stomachs where their abs or bellies should be, a line has been crossed. Super hard, 8 pack abs are as much a turn off as beer guts.

    • monette says:

Very interesting topic. My BF is way skinnier than me, he likes to cycle A LOT. When he is naked I find him extremely hot and well proportioned. But when he is dressed up he looks like a 16 old. And things get even worse when he gets in the cycling gear, his legs look so skinny. Well I’m jealous 🙁

  21. benny says:

She has self-image problems. Anyone who turns their formerly beautiful face into an alien-monkey hybrid through surgery and starvation has self-image problems.

I just need to look at her thin hair and receding hairline to know she starves or purges, because that’s a classic sign of malnutrition. What she needs is mental help. But at this point she’s so rich and famous, there’s nobody who will tell her the truth to her face. And her supposed “loved ones” (i.e., husband or other family members) apparently don’t give a crap about her health either. Sad.

  22. jellyfish says:

I read that shes like 5’3 or 5’2. I’m her height and I’m a size 0, and I even have a little more meat on me than she does. So I’m guessing she is more of a 0 or 00 than a 2.

    • ramona says:

Yes – I’m Posh’s height and a UK 8 and I’m twice as big as she is. She’s definitely a 00. Or beautifully photoshopped. Or both.

  23. Amy says:

I just read somewhere that Posh learned Beyonce wore one of her dresses and she freaked out. There was a picture of Beyonce wearing the dress and she looked good. Considering Beyonce gave birth a short time ago and is definitely not a size 2, maybe women who are not stick skinny like Posh can wear her clothes? Is it just the price tag that makes them inaccessible to us poor peasants?

  24. sup says:

it’s crazy but she looks at a normal weight in these photos! i guess the latest pregnancy was good for her.

  25. UKHels says:

I’m more irritated that people still refer to her as ‘Posh’ when she’s anything but

the only reason she was named ‘posh’ was that she wasn’t a gobshite like the others and stood around in high heels pouting

  26. lisa says:

Maybe young girls should stop thinking celebrities are their role models. They are not here to be role models. If young girls are using them as such then that really is not the celebs problem. Especially if they are not standing up saying “be like me”

My role models were never the women I saw in magazines or TV. I didn’t know them. The women I modeled my life after were the women in my life and those that I came in contact.

Celebrities should not be knocked because young women look for the superficial.

    • sup says:

well when you’re young you haven’t found yourself and your ego is fragile and blah blah (lbr many people never leave this stage-emotionally) so i think it’s the parent’s responsibility to teach the kids that these people aren’t there to be their role models. my role models weren’t celebs either, but i was easily impressionable and suffered from an eating disorder since i was 7. and it was the 90’s, the golden age of models and photoshop wasn’t widely known of, and all the models and people on tv were bone-thin which triggered me all the time. if somebody told me of photoshop back then… also didn’t help that boys started to notice me all of a sudden when i got anorexic. so yeah when you’re young it’s not that easy not to be influenced by the media surrounding you
