Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis’ childhood sounds like a rock ‘n roll cliché. Anthony’s dad was a Sunset Strip drug dealer that moved his goods in 1970’s Los Angeles, taking his son with him to work. Spider, as Kiedis’ dad was called, encouraged sex, drug and rock-n-roll for his son, getting him high to lose his virginity at 13 and hang out with rock stars of the time.
Anthony Kiedis wrote about his troubled childhood in his memoir Scar Tissue, and HBO is now turning his story into a series.
Variety reported today that Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis’ colorful rock-and-roll upbringing will be the basis of an HBO series tentatively titled “Scar Tissue.”
The show will center on Kiedis’ relationship with his dad and their hopped-up adventures on L.A.’s Sunset Strip. “He introduced me to the arts, to a more culturally magnificent life,” Kiedis told Daily Variety. “But some of it was this heavy, adult matter that I wasn’t quite capable of digesting. … It was a very rich but kind of challenging period of my life. I was thrust into this adult mentality by age 11.” The show is not strictly based on Kiedis’ memoir of the same name — which focused more on the singer’s life as a rock star — but will also look at the Hollywood rock scene of the ’70s, with Kiedis planning to be heavily involved in the project, including possibly narrating the hour-long drama and making occasional cameos.

It’s good that Anthony can see the positives in the exposure he was given, but it’s even better that he sees the negatives in it. Kiedis has had years of drug issues, but says he’s been sober since 2000. The life he led gave him the lyrics to some excellent music.
Kiedis is a dad now, to one cute little Everly Bear, and he always looks like a caring, doting father. If nothing else I think he learned how not to father from the parenting he received.

I thought his dad went by “Blackie”.
My son will now make me splurge and get the HBO package, Scar Tissue, was/is one of his favorite books. He’s constantly making references to it still, and he read it almost two years ago!!!!

From my perspective, ‘Scar Tissue’ was one of the most self-serving pieces of drek I’ve ever read.

Oh, and by the way Anthony, this look’s been done. His name is Iggy Pop.

i loved the book, love the band and will definitely watch. who can help if they look like someone? i always (at least twice a week) have someone tell me i look like tina fey… but what should i do? dye my hair blond and get contacts? no i just deal with it

I’ve read Scar Tissue. An HBO series would be redundant.
Baholicious - I agree, in part. I was never a huge Kiedis fan until I read the book (a birthday present from my Chili’s obsessed love) but I came out of it appreciating his honesty and perspective. I just don’t have any need to reread it anytime soon - it’s a touch self-centered with no real message or connection with the reader. Just empathy garnered from hitting your head on the same piece of brick wall, over and over and over again.
Ironically enough, my next autobiography is by a man I consider my second “Pop” (”Open Up and Bleed” ). Unlike Kiedis, I’m willing to give Iggy a lot more lead way in self-indulgent fluff, because I love the man and I’m genuinely interested in how he’s lead his life and interactions with the people he’s met over the years. I’m just nervous to crack it open because I don’t want to finish it and go “meh”, like other rock-bios I’ve read.

@ cara - Blackie was one of his dad’s stage names. He was trying to break into the biz while supplying for those already in it, lol.

I wish I could go back in time and not buy the book. Not just ’cause it sucked, but because I’m no longer into what I thought were some pretty awesome tunes. Ruined it for me. The “working the steps” references and excuses for sucking were redundant. Neglected kid spoiled by the universe, meets Dahli Lama (spelling), bangs models, speeks to birds, gets a dog that has never seen him high. WTF is that? It’s too bad he made it out of the jungle. HBO series, eh? Thanks for the warning!

I tried so hard to love the RHCPs in high school as much as all the cool kids did, but it never happened.

I thought Kedis’ Dad was Blackie, who lives in Rockford, MI… Maybe I am wrong, but Kedis used to be seen everywhere around there…

Anthony Kiedis is so sexy and I loved reading his book. It started out a little slow but then I couldn’t put it down.

I read Scar Tissue and it was the best book I have ever read. I recommend it to any Chili Fan. If some of you hated it so much then why did you keep reading it. dummies. I think Anthony will be a wonderful father, and his son is very lucky, and probably gets the best lullaby’s ever.

Sounds like a cool show. I’d like to see it. Another reason I wish I had HBO. Well, at least they passed on Mad Men.
