Heartthrob Johnny Depp, 45, is playing the Mad Hatter in a Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland. A photo reportedly of Johnny in costume and makeup has been leaked online. His hair stands out in curly coils from the sides his head and Depp’s face is white with red streaks on his cheeks and around eyes. Talented at playing nearly unrecognizable, eccentric characters, Depp will bring his unique take to the role.
Alice in Wonderland also stars Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Crispin Glover. It will be part Beowulf-type live action CGI and part live footage. Alice is due out in theaters in March, 2010 and given how far away the release date is this seems like a genuine photo leak and not an attempt to drum up publicity for the film. You never know, though.
Doesn’t it look like Depp has gained a little weight? His cheeks look a little fuller, although it could be the makeup. Like some of the advance photos of Heath Ledger as the Joker that came out ahead of The Dark Knight, there’s always the possibility that someone cooked this up in Photoshop.

Christ Almighty. Is this version supposed to give children and adults nightmares?!?!

He looks like an ageing Edward Scissorhands!
Edited to add: I’d like to see a flick version of a book where someone’s actually using their own imagination…

Crap. Anne Hathaway really is going to be in this? That sucks. But at least it’s not Sarah Michelle Gellar anymore. I’ll pick Anne over Sarah any day.

Annicka you’re getting your movies mixed up. Sarah Michelle Gellar was supposed to be in American McGee’s Alice. She backed out, thank god.

@KDRockstar: I’m so, soo, SO with you. Please let this be a Photoshop, I don’t like it.
@Annicka & Holly:
Not to mention, Anne is not playing Alice, some unknown is. I actually don’t know WHAT Anne is supposed to be. She annoys me though.

I’m a state-dependent learner. I’ll let you know how I feel about this look, after I’ve reached my “correct” state of mind.

Anne Hathaway’s playing the White Queen, I think.
I adore JD and TB collabo’s
They’ve both got that elusive ‘nuts factor’ which makes their work product extremely compelling!

I love Tim and I love Johnny…I was extremely excited to hear TB was doing this movie. By the looks of the picture (and taking for granted who’s doing the movie) I am hoping it leans more toward the Alice video game. Alice is one of my favorite stories and IS very creepy

He definitely looks like a more Burton Mad Hatter than anything I’ve seen before. I like it.

He always makes every character creepy-yet-sympathetic. I’m seeing the creepy, notsomuch the sympathetic!

I love me some Johnny Depp, but please, before I die, and before he gets too old, please could somebody make a movie where he is ‘unplugged’??!! I want to see him play some dark, brooding, HANDSOME, figure from a Bronte novel or something. Wouldn’t he be a yummy Heathcliff or Edward Rochester!!
I mean, The Libertine started out pretty good, but then, ewwwwwwww.

Meh. I like JD, he’s a good actor, but it seems like he is always playing a creepy weird character.

Not a big Alice in Wonderland fan, but this I’ll go see! Burton and Depp doing Alice? Hell yeah!

Tim Burton, yawn.
Once you’ve seen one of his films, you know exactly how all the rest are going to look and feel.
Put the smoke machines and the kabuki make-up away, Tim, and– if you actually do have any range or original ideas– do share them with us. Just because your galpal has perpetual black bags under her eyes does not mean that’s the only production choice.

As a huge fan of both Tim and Johnny I cannot wait to see this film! This costume looks fantastic! Burton at his creepy, gothic best. Burton will give the Alice story the justice that it finally deserves. Can’t wait!

I Like the Look – He definitely looks like a Mad Hatter.
God – is he yummy or what!?!

Holly – do you know if the American McGee version is actually going to happen? I heard about it quite a long time ago, 2 or 3 years maybe? But it hasn’t seemed to progress since then. I wonder if it will happen at all, especially now that Burton is doing a version that seems to have the same sinister quality :s

I love Tim Burton’s films. I don’t care if they’re predictable, because I think the feel of the movies are beautiful. The mood, lighting, and atmosphere provide an intensity. Even though Tim Burton’s movies are usually dark and morbid, there’s always something I find universally sympathetic and endearing to the stories. I think that’s why Burton has attracted such an extensive audience.
I like Johnny Depp, too. He’s a neat guy.

After reading the books, the Disney version of Alice no longer satisfies. Don’t get me wrong…I adore the Disney film. This, however, is going to do the stories justice.
They are dark and frightening.
I’ll have to screen it before letting my kidlet see it, but I think she’ll be just about the right age for it when it’s released.
A horror film for kids…I’m sorry, but I find that VERY original.

It’s Tim Burton.
Of course it’s creepy.
I think the original text is much more cerebral, but this is just a wildly different interpretation.
Going back to the silent era there have been attempts to remain true to the source. So we have all those to look at.
Bring it on!

Doesn’t seem like a kid movie.
But I’m sure it will satisfy the most hard core Depp lusting crowd of adults.

Hey, all you Depp h8ers. Johnny is more than capable of playing “normal” roles. Take a Midol and go watch movies like Blow, The Ninth Gate, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. I can’t wait for Alice.
