aaaaah Dubya. Add a pretzel in that dummy’s mouth and the picture would be complete.

Seriously though, I know it’s HBO, but come one, why do this? and admitting it was on purpose. It took away from the quality of that show.

Shitty finale though, Game of Thrones. The second to last episode was SO promising. The finale was a complete let-down.

    • sophia says:

Wether you like him or not, he was the President of The United Srates and I think that is a crappy thing to say! I not an Obama supporter but I would be saying the same thing if it was him. If you can’t respect our Presodent, you are an ignorant asa. 🙁

      • DemoCat827 says:

Sophia, I give respect to those who have earned it. Dumbya is an ignorant buffoon who should never have been allowed near the Presidency, but stole his way in. I think this is HILARIOUS. (oh, and you should seriously learn to spell).

      • Sam says:

Why does somebody need to respect someone simply because they were president? If they didn’t vote for him, disagreed with his policies and think he’s a general ass, that is fine. Being in a position of power hardly means you automatically deserve respect.

      • vic says:

Sophia you are right. I don’t respect Obama but if they did this to him I’d say something.

      • Bubbling says:

LOL, level of typos in your comment is too damn high!

      • Tiffany says:

Everyone needs to calm down. They weren’t trying to make a STATEMENT with this. They needed a lot of heads, and there as a GWB mask on set. They intentionally put that head in places where you wouldn’t see it.

I think the headline is a LOT juicier than the real story.

      • Chatcat says:

        Word!

      • ZenB!tch says:

I don’t support either of them but
I think I’d like to see Obama’s head roll more. GWB had been gone a year before my pocket book was affected.

Yes. It’s all about ME! ME! ME!

OK… the one whose head I REALLY want to see roll is Cheney’s. I’m still bitter.

    • truthSF says:

I need to hurry up and finish season 1 so I can move on to season 2, before they take it off HBO on demand. And I agree Maguita, I may not like Dumya as our Pres, but that was tacky.

    • Maguita says:

PEOPLE, I know it’s election season but let’s try and keep it cool a bit. I know I’ve lost it yesterday and I apologize (ChatCat), but please, don’t forget about equal-opportunity humor, especially around politics:

How many times have we made fun of EX-PRESIDENTS Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton… Please, anyone who can resist not saying anything when Clinton and Cigar find themselves in the same sentence has no pulse!

And Sophie, I am very okay with being called an asa, whatever that may be, but ignorant, I completely disagree… But then again, I am the one who doesn’t know what an asa is…

      • marie says:

I’m with you on this one, if you make fun of one then they’re all fair game and Presidents have been fair game for longer than I care to remember.

And it’s not cool for anyone to park in handicap spots.

      • Katy says:

You always say it so eloquently and we if can’t have a sense of humor about it then what? Comedians have always made fun of ex and current presidents (SNL is the best). And like you said below Maguita, people are not reading the article…it was not meant to be disrespectful. I do love to read your posts Maguita, you seem to be a very insightful person.

      • Maguita says:

Thank you Katie, very kind of you.

And because I like poking mercilessly at the absurd, do you guys know why I used a pretzel?

Because falling off a bike, or tripping out of Air Force One wouldn’t have worked.

      • ZenB!tch says:

I’ve looked longingly at CNN for 12 years now saying “God, I miss Clinton the OLD ICKY PERV!” I don’t have to like a person to respect him as president but I do think he should be able to do the job.

Yeah, I miss the Old Perv, his frizzy hair and horrible speaking voice.

    • ol cranky says:

If they were really clever, they would have used the faces of a few different famous people so people could try to spot them all and stuff. It’s funny when its a bunch of people but I can see folks thinking it in poor taste when it’s only W

    • Maguita says:

For those who find it too hard to click, and actually Read the story, here’s an excerpt to put you in the right frame of my mind:

“We can’t afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk,” the pair said in their statement. “After the scene was already shot, someone pointed out that one of the heads looked like George W. Bush.”

They went on to insist that they “meant no disrespect to the former President and apologize if anything we said or did suggested otherwise.”

HBO released its own statement saying it was also sorry for this “unacceptable, disrespectful” mistake, and will ensure that it is “removed from any future DVD production.”

      GAWKER.

      • Tiffany says:

        Thanks! 😀

      • Kim says:

OH PLEASE! We cant afford a few dummy heads! Its HBO — they have all the money they need. If they admitted they did it on purpose I would at least respect that but this stupid, false, cop out just makes them look like morons.

    • corny says:

umm…I wonder if he was credited for his part? ya know you can fool some of the fools some of the time…etc

    • sup says:

the season finale was so anti-climactic. thanks for being the only one so far who seems to agree.

    • GoodCapon says:

The House of the Undying scene was very, very disappointing.

This is the problem when you read the books! You have high expectations for some of your favorite scenes and it’s really sad when they don’t deliver. I’m fine with some of the adapatation changes but that HotU scene was nothing compared to the book.

  2. lucy2 says:

Oh come on, who doesn’t have a few molded president heads lying around?

I call BS on the “we don’t have $, have to use what’s laying around” excuse though – that show looks pretty epic, someone on the huge crew couldn’t take 5 minutes to make it look a little different? I’m NO fan of W, but that’s pretty lame.
Lol at Chiklis. After the Shield, he will always scare the crap out of me though.
Portia as Lily Munster makes up for Jerry O’Connell.

    • Incredulous says:

Firstly, someone did spend a few minutes making the head look different – note the hairstyle.

Secondly, heads are expensive and tend to have limited use so you re-use them where you can to justify the cost.

Thirdly, I saw an HBO DVD in which Will Ferrell made fun of George W Bush for around 90 minutes. I don’t see HBO pulling that off the shelves.

This is as silly as the picture of Mohammed except Western.

      • lucy2 says:

I was joking about having the heads lying around. I get they’re expensive and I don’t think reusing something is bad. But I’ll rephrase – a few minutes to make the FACE look different- mush the nose, add a mustache, etc. The hair doesn’t really disguise it, IMO. Unless someone wants to make a statement with it, do what’s necessary to make it a non-issue.

I’d say the Will Ferrel play (which I saw and was basically like a longer, more serious SNL sketch) is pretty different having than someone’s head on a spike…

      • It is ME!! says:

I LOVE “Youre Welcome America”! Too funny!

Meh, Presidents are fair game. Their underage kids? Not so much.

  3. Flea says:

If you would find this political statement offensive if your favorite president’s head was used then it must be equally offensive if any president’s head it used. You must consider the office held, not the person holding it.

Zac Effron, the handicapped parking is uncool. I really hate when I go through the trouble of packing up my child, his wheelchair, driving to a place I need to go & finding no handicapped parking to get him and his wheelchair back out again. Regular spots aren’t big enough to get him in and out of his wheelchair & we can’t park way out in the empty part of the lot because of his inability to regulate his body temperature. Those spots aren’t special rewards. Some people actually need them to participate in society. Be thankful for your extremely healthy body and walk a few extra feet Zac.

    • Amelia says:

I’m totally with you on the handicapped parking. If you don’t have a kid or are not handicapped yourself, find somewhere else!!! It’s not that confusing!
And didn’t we already speculate Miley had a bun in the oven?

    • ZenB!tch says:

I’d be fine if Clinton’s head was rolled. He and Reagan are the only presidents in my lifetime that were even remotely worth respecting. Obviously, I am not partisan. I have not picked someone in this election yet. I probably won’t until November.

Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush 1, Bush 2, Obama… AIGH!

Actually in my mother’s lifetime I could really only add Roosevelt to that list.

Obama is the one who has *personally* hurt me the most which is why I reserve most of my vitriol for him (and Cheney – I can’t help it) but if he’s actually helped someone – good for you. Same with GWB – he did nothing to me personally other than keep me entertained on SNL.

  4. cupidityrox! says:

Is it wrong that I found this totally hilarious? And so fitting?
    Crucify me if you want

    • Belle says:

Not totally wrong if you would find it just as hilarious if it were an Obama head. Many might find that just as ‘fitting’, but my guess is there would be quite an uproar over it.

      • Str8Shooter says:

You mean kinda like the one you just made about this.

Funny…any time anything about your beloved Bozo Bush comes up, you right-wingers always have to compare it to Obama.

Your Commander-in-Thief was an idiot, and I think this is HYSTERICAL.

      • ZenB!tch says:

        @Str8Shooter

Exactly GWB was an idiot and a joke – Nobama should know better. That is what makes him so sad and so disappointing on top of the few times he has personally screwed me.

      • Issa says:

The difference is Bush isn’t the sitting or relevant President. No death hint/scene/threat,even hinting at it should be done to a sitting president. Mocking the death of a sitting president is a completely different situation than making light of a former bad president. I dislike Bush more than any President during my lifetime, but would have never laughed at something like this when he was actually in office.

      • Maguita says:

@Issa, you are EXACTLY right. If it were Obama’s head, while still in office, it would be perceived as death threats. However, after the end of his administration, he would become fairplay, like all of his predecessors.

People who are so defensive, they stifle the right to make fun of past presidents, which has ALWAYS been our American way. Always. Our right to being funny and creative, and openly criticize our past, so our future would be brighter. And who defends Bush of ALL presidents. The one everyone just a few months ago, from both parties, had agreed he was the worst president in contemporary American history.

  5. buell says:

Guess they couldn’t use Barack Obama’s because it’s too far up his ass?

    • Turd Fergussen says:

HAHAHAHAHA. Word. Talk about someone who’s been treated with kid gloves his entire presidency and held accountable for nada.

Not that Hollywood types would ever let an “oversight” like this happen with an Obama replica. Remember a few years back when that film was made depicting Bush’s assassination? To liberals, that was all free speech, art, satire, etc. Imagine if a right-wing filmmaker did that to Obama. Heads would roll. Such a double standard.

      • bluhare says:

I hope you don’t eat with the fingers that just typed your comment, as your food must taste like crap.

        Hitler Obama anyone?

      • Tiffany says:

Treated with kid gloves? Considering there were people saying that he wasn’t a citizen for the first 3 years, I don’t think that is accurate at all. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

      • NYC_girl says:

And, considering the total sh*tstorm Obama walked into because of the head on a stick above, I don’t blame him for not cleaning up the mess so fast.

    • sunmoonstars says:

Nobody would dare because they are afraid of being called a racist.

    • ZenB!tch says:

      +1

    • Issa says:

While the Republicans have their hands/ heads up everybody else’s arse & reproductive systems.

  6. Rita says:

I voted for Bush for his first term but when he bombed Iraq, I knew he was in over his head…just never thought someone would put it on a pole.

btw-Whether you like or dislike Obama, you have Bush to thank for him as President.

    • vic says:

Oh please. Everything is Boosh’s fault. LOL at the excuses for being a bad president. Over three years later and Lib’s are still whining.

      • bluhare says:

True. It’s tough to undo eight years of shit.

      • Str8Shooter says:

Ah, Vic. The Rebublicans must LOVE that they can count on people like you. Uneducated idiots who don’t realize that EIGHT years of destroying the country can not be turned around in 3.

I bet you’d vote for Palin if you could too.

        Haha!!

    • ZenB!tch says:

I actually thank John McCain, the RNC and Sarah Palin for Obama. I don’t know that I would have shot myself in the foot so willingly by voting for Obama had McCain made a viable choice for VP. I had nothing against McCain.

I did vote against GWB and GHWB twice each (GHWB was my first election). I hate the Bushes but Nobama has hurt me in the pocket book at least 3 times – so it’s personal.

That said, if Romney picked Jeb Bush for VP I might be forced to vote for Nobama.

      • sunmoonstars says:

Well Str8shooter, you’re certainly not going to win anyone over by calling them uneducated idiots! Why do people always resort to name-calling? Both sides do it, but the left seems to be way nastier and more condescending.

I don’t have a dog in this fight as I’m a Libertarian and think both sides are evil, BTW.

  7. Jackie O says:

last season of weeds! so sad.

very few shows allow the lead female character be so apologetically criminal.

    i will miss it terribly.

  8. QQ says:

Im with Andy Cohen: how can gay people Support a party that by all accounts sooner see them dead or firmly in place as second class people?

    • Maguita says:

Lost my sh-t yesterday, someone in my life told me that if I think gays are just born this way, then it’s okay for murderers too, for they were born this way.

      • QQ says:

        Wow… Just… Wow

      • Maguita says:

… Wow you found it offensive as well… or wow the comparison made sense to you…

Don’t mean to insult you QQ, but lately, I can’t seem to correctly judge left from right. Seems even those who call themselves moderates go apesh-t on things they haven’t read, researched or even ever heard about…

      • QQ says:

NO no Maguita Im with you in Super Offended land!!

      • Maguita says:

        Ouf! Relief. 🙂

      • marie says:

I believe that is probably the dumbest argument I have ever heard.. I’m sorry-I just can’t believe somebody would say it, it blows the mind..

      • Maguita says:

@marie, it was someone close, and even if she’s from the right, we always put friendship first. In our group, we have a gay couple… Imagine their surprise at their friend’s comparison of their loving relationship to be as natural as murder.

        Very-very sh-tty.

    • sunmoonstars says:

Please show me one example of any Republican wanting to kill gays. The worst “oppression” I’ve seen is that they can’t get married. I personally don’t care what they do but I do have a problem with redefining marriage to include gays. Once you start redefining words you’re getting into “1984” territory and that terrifies me (and should you). The solution is to remove the government from the marriage business, and give everyone civil unions. That is true equality under the law but apparently people think it’s more important to try and force their views down people’s throats. And I’m talking about both sides here.

I do get sick of the hysterical comments like “Those big eeeevil RepubliKKKans are gonna kill us all!!!ZOMG!”. It’s hyperbole and actually insulting to gays who are in danger around the world. You tell a gay in Iran that American gays are oppressed and he’d probably think you were insane.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that public discourse seems to have devolved to baseless accusations, insane claims and lots and lots of shrill shrieking…all mixed with a huge amount of butthurt. No wonder we’re circling the drain! You think China cares about stupid crap like this? No, they’re too busy being productive! If we don’t focus on the big problems we won’t have a country and none of this nonsense will matter! When did feelings become our most precious national resource?

      • Maguita says:

That was actually very well and beautifully stated. If there is one thing I admire, is a true patriot pissed at religious bigotry that everyone seems intended to take as our first natural resource.

You must admit though, your first comment… Was not up-to-par with this one.

As for death threats, I don’t know where you get your information, but there have been too many. Especially in the bible-thumping belt, which we used to laugh at and ignore… Until it had taken bigger flight, and is having much more effect on millions of people. American citizens.

And yes, in the past 18 months, most Republican party representatives, had been making some nasty, bigoted, homophobic, and racist un-American, statements, and trying to push some stifling-middle-ages laws down our throats.

Maybe you should google a bit what is going in Texas, Arizona, Virginia, etc.

The latest is Troy, MI mayor stating that being gay is as hazardous to your health as smoking. And that is the least offensive ignorant comment I’ve heard in the past 48 hours, from appointed-to-the-right officials.

Not to take away from your beautifully stated comment, but irrefutable, documented, filmed proof of harsh unethical attacks on regular Americans, simply because they are gay, or not Christian, or not white (AZ), are too many to deny. Even for someone who wants to still believe the best of what used to be a decent Republican Party. The Reagan era is very much over, and is nothing but a yearning-for-sad-memory of an era.

And I used to be a registered Republican. Truly. But extremes push you to reassess your choices, and do what is best for the future of your children. Or in this day and age, what is the least-worst. For I agree, today, both parties owe everything to the devil (lobbyists).

  9. RobN says:

Really inappropriate and a ridiculous explanation.

The President, of whichever party, whether you like him personally or not, whether you agree with his policies or not, deserves a modicum of respect.

The stench of hypocrisy is also a little disgusting; you try this with Obama, and people are screaming racism at the top of their lungs and CNN is airing a history lesson on the treatment of blacks throughout U.S. history and lining up “experts” to fight over who is the most appalled. You won’t see the same consideration for a president they don’t care for.

    • Belle says:

      ^^^^This. Well said.

    • ORLY says:

Oh for hell’s sake. I watch the show, I was too busy being upset about who was really beheaded and the point of showing the daughter the heads, to even notice GW’s lookalike. It was an emotional scene.

Most people who saw the episode missed the ‘controversial’ head. It was such a quick spot. If people didn’t make such a stink about it, hardly anyone would notice.

      • RobN says:

Do you really not get that it isn’t a matter of how quickly if flashes by, or the number of people who noticed, but the fact that they did it at all?

Whether something is inappropriate or not isn’t judged by the number of people who saw it and it isn’t judged by the number of people who make a stink out of it. It is the act itself. Putting the head of a U.S. President on a pike is simply inappropriate whether you’re paying attention to it or not.

      • ORLY says:

No, I’m too stupid to “get it”.

I see a mountain out of a molehill. They’ve explained what happened, it is your own issue for not accepting that explanation and getting butthurt.
My point about missing it, is, if Game of Thrones meant to use the head on a pike as a offense (which I highly doubt), they failed because viewers totally missed it. I watch that show religiously and I have watched that episode more than once, until reading this today, I never noticed that profile shot.

Since they RENTED that head, do you think it has not been used multiple times before? Please tell me when it is appropriate to use the severed head of a former U.S. President.

      • ORLY says:

If “HBO” meant it as AN offense. Damn typos and grammatical errors.

    • Tiffany says:

For goodness sake, get over yourself and read what REALLY happened. Not everything is worth getting outraged for!

Repeating a Maguita post from above:
“We can’t afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk,” the pair said in their statement. “After the scene was already shot, someone pointed out that one of the heads looked like George W. Bush.”

They went on to insist that they “meant no disrespect to the former President and apologize if anything we said or did suggested otherwise.”

HBO released its own statement saying it was also sorry for this “unacceptable, disrespectful” mistake, and will ensure that it is “removed from any future DVD production.”

      GAWKER.

      • Belle says:

Sorry, but this ‘explanation’ would absolutely NOT fly if it had been an Obama head.

      • Tiffany says:

Belle, it is easy to get upset over offenses that never happened, right? Blaming other people for responses they never made to events that never happened.

      • Maguita says:

OH FFS, give it a few years after his presidency ends @Belle, and like ALL HIS PREDECESSORS, prosthetic heads would be made in OBAMA’s likeness as well, and used on movie and tv sets.

And someone, some day, on some movie set, would use inadvertently his head during the shooting of some KKK scene. Just because no one noticed, and were trying to save money when renting black-African heads for a movie in bulk.

        Understand the REAL situation now?

        F-cking Land of Confusion!!!

      • Maguita says:

And just to be clear, for those who don’t read, know about our American history, please, let me clear any misunderstanding:

NO, KKK does not here mean Kim, Khloe and Kourtney!!!

        (thank you Joel McHale!!!).

  10. Bubbling says:

    Zac, really though?! Douche move

    • RuddyZooKeeper says:

Exactly. Two things I’m NEVER tempted to do are litter and park between the blue lines. Not that the two are remotely morally related … What a jackass. Tell you what, Efron: I’m sure the person who really needs that space will trade you your health for their parking pass.

  11. Reece says:

Is that Cheney next to him? haha
They reuse stuff all the time in film/tv. That’s why there are pterodactyls in Citizen Kane.

  12. kpist says:

stupid move when conservatives outnumber liberals in America, and yes they do. According to Gallup in 2010, 42% identify as conservative, 20% as liberal and 38% as moderate. It would be wise for these shows not to really cater to 20% of it’s possible viewers.

    • It is ME!! says:

Yep, because polls can never be manipulated. Same with statistics, right?

Doesn’t matter, the Empire is circling the drain. China’s up to bat.

      • kpist says:

Gallup is the most reliable. I’m sure there is a margin of error, but not enough to make my case any less valid

      • flan says:

Some of the commenters lately seem to post with an agenda.

Especially the ones who only post random statistics like these.

    • kpist says:

to flan below, random numbers????? Seriously, I just gave precise gallop info regarding audiences across America and you say random? As I said, even if there is a margin of error, it would not be enough to make the case any less valid. It’s not wise to only appeal to 20% of Americans, not good targeting.

Maybe YOU have an agenda, I’m just talking good marketing.

  13. msimmonsva22 says:

Game of Thrones is by far one of the best shows on telivision. I cannot wait until the third season. The books are great! Yes I am ignoring the hogwash posted about the Septa’s head because that what it is.

  14. eileen says:

I’m not seeing what the big deal is-its not Bush’s REAL head! They didnt annouce it in the show or even after-not until someone (who clearly has a TON of time on their hands) spotted it and asked. Its not even a direct shot!

    • D1 says:

The makers of the show announced it on the DVD commentary – that’s how all this came out. If they had kept their mouths shut, no one would have noticed.

  15. mimi says:

I’m a liberal and I find this to be completely out of line and violent.

No human being should be given such barbaric treatment.

    • Esmom says:

Agreed. I’m no fan of W. But I do think the office of Presidents demands respect. Which is why I’ve gotten incensed when parents at school have requested “alternate activities” so their child doesn’t have to be subjected to Obama’s back to school address.

Anyway…rant over. The head on a stick move was stupid and dickish and their backpedaling only makes it worse.

  16. Katyusha says:

What baffles me is how someone even noticed his quarter profile!

    I would’ve never noticed that.

    • ORLY says:

That’s exactly what I said. I watch the show and I never noticed. It’s only because of all this noise I went back to the episode to see it.

I really hate when political stuff is done on this site, people take it WAY to personal. Double standards are a part of life, DWI.

  18. k says:

What the big deal. The head doesn’t look like Bush. Someone must have been staring at the picture really hard.

  19. garvels says:

I am not a big Bush fan but sticking his head on a stake is just disgusting, vulgar and crude. I think Bush made some very bad decisions just like Obama but neither man deserves to have their likeness mounted on a stick. Both men represent the office of the president and the office needs to be respected.

  20. Choupette says:

Man, love to see the reaction if a Barack Obama head had accidently on purpose been used. Black man’s head on a spike? Man oh man oh man.

    • Kim says:

Seriously! Can you imagine! Al Sharpton & the NAACP would demand the show be banned & canceled and a formal apology from the shows creator etc etc

  21. Kim says:

Grow up people at Game of Thrones by trying to make a political statement in a very immature & stupid way. Im not a Bush fan or hater but i do HATE when Hollywood celebs spew politico as if they have clue! They just lost a viewer.

  22. Janet says:

Half of me says this is very disrespectful. The other half is laughing out loud.

  23. Lizzie K says:

It’s lame and sophomoric, and I agree with the poster who said it detracts from the quality of the show. I’m also calling BS on the notion that they just happened to rent this head and just happened to use it, without noticing until after the scenes were shot that it was Bush’s head. Bitch, please.

I hate when Hollywood drags politics into entertainment. I don’t care how you vote, just shut up about it.

And if you’ve read the books, Game of Thrones has enough problems without adding this kind of cheap shot.

  24. Anon says:

    I’d rather it been Cheney…

  25. Esmom says:

I know no one cares but I’m glad Lance is finally being exposed for the fraud he is.

  26. bubbles says:

PEOPLE, IT’S NOT REALLY BUSH’S HEAD! IT’S A DUMMY. now I want to know who else’s head was staked.

  27. silvermistie says:

Courtney is starting to look like Janice Dickinson

  28. Zvonk says:

If Americans realised the damage George W Bush did to America’s reputation around the world, they would be asking for a real life re-enactment.

  29. dahlia noir says:

Bush made the Americans look like perfect idiots to the world. He started many wars just to get the oil ( cliché but true) and his orders killed many MANY people. I’m not offended at all, seeing his head used as a toothpick. We french used to take our kings head so not shocked at all lol

  30. anne_000 says:

It doesn’t even look like him. I think some people are making a big deal over nothing just for political purposes. But if pro-Bush ppl want to overreach & be outraged because they somehow see gwb in a dirty, messy-haired, dopey-looking barbarian, then so be it… O_o
