Ryan Lochte wins gold in the first 2012 match against Michael Phelps

Does anyone else feel like this whole “Michael Phelps-Ryan Lochte: THE COMPETITION” media invention is a bit overblown? Before all of the stuff for the London Olympics began, I always heard that Ryan and Michael were friends – or, if not friends, then friendly and nice to each other. Now it’s like everyone is trying to make this into the biggest rivalry ever. Anyway…

Phelps and Lochte went head-to-head in their first competition yesterday. Long story short, Lochte won gold and Phelps didn’t even place. I know a lot of people are “over” Phelps for being over-hyped and for seeming like he doesn’t even want to be there, but I still believe in Phelps. I think not even placing in the 400 meter individual medley was just the ass-kicking Michael needed to get his head in the game. Phelps isn’t going to win eight golds this time around, but he’s going to win some, and Lochte is going to win some, and it’s going to be fine.

As for Lochte… he’s incredibly cute. Did you see the video thing of what Lochte was doing to train for London? That enormous tire?!! Good God. But he’s a beautiful swimmer, he has a gorgeous body, a sexy smile and he’s a winker. I love a winker. However, I am not a fan of his diamond grill.

Lochte and Phelps will be in the 4 X 100 relay later today – so they’ll be on the same team. Isn’t this event where they won gold the last time? Phelps pulling out all of the stops and winning the gold by a hundredth of a second? Maybe it will happen again. And then Phelps and Lochte go head-to-head again on… Wednesday, August 1.

PS… Did anyone else watch girls’ beach volleyball? We don’t have any photos from that event, but I’m concerned about Misty and Kerri. I love those girls with all my heart, and that Aussie team almost kicked their asses.

I just want to add that Lochte didn’t just win, he annihilated the competition. It was quite decisive.

    • lisa2 says:

you’re right it was like he was all alone. And watching and listening to Michael after the lose.. he looked like he was in shock. It must be strange for him to come in 4th. But man he looked like a lost little boy, he couldn’t find his worlds.

    • beyonce's bump says:

Did anyone see his speech after he won though? lol COCKY MUCH???

      • Az says:

He deserves to be cocky after that race. It wasn’t even a competition. He swam ahead and the others just trailed. That’s what dedicated training accomplishes. Phelps better get his sh*t together for the relay.

  2. Mia 4S says:

NBC loves to manufacture these stories in advance, what’s hilarious is that they rarely manage to predict the good stories. Thank GOD for the Canadian channel feed so you can actually see events in real time and the beautiful tribute to the victims of terrorism and loved ones lost that took place during the opening ceremony (as opposed to what NBC ran, ANOTHER interview with Phelps).

    • corny says:

NBC and Blah Lauer are blowing it big time with their half ass coverage and the zillion commercials

    • ssa says:

I’m from west Texas but currently living in Tennessee and my parents are still back home so they get to watch everything live on the Mexican networks while I’m stuck with NBC and the worst commentary ever. Seriously, they made the opening ceremonies unbearable.

  3. mia girl says:

    Swimmer’s body = hot

    • momoftwo says:

I think it’s new generation of swimmer’s bodies that are hot.

As someone that has been analyzing swimmer bodies for the last 20 years of olympics (thank you very much :)…they used to be very broad chested and big shoulders but no definition.

Now they do so much weight training in addition to their swimming that they are cut and SOOOOOO HOT!!!!!

      I sound like a dirty ole lady….

      • divax says:

well then I must be one hell of a dirty old lady. In the heat of the moment following his interview I told my hubby that I’d love to jump his bones (Ryan’s not the old man’s). Hey, it was a knee-jerk reaction, but he saw the humour in it (thank God)

    • mia girl says:

Good point! As per momftwo’s suggestion…

      EDIT: 2012 Swimmer’s body = hot.

  4. chalkdustgirl says:

Being winked at by a guy who looks like that might make me black out for a second or two.

    • Sandy says:

      +1.

Lochte is soooooo goodlooking, its crazy. And combined with that body of his…. *sigh*

    • Liv says:

      He’s so cute!! 😉

But this grill thing is just awful! Thank god he wasn’t allowed to wear it.

      • Elizabeth says:

What is the grill for? Is having his teeth fixed or is it just some kind of weird jewelry?

      • Kim says:

IT’S a snap on grill he took it off to get his medal. No grills allowed on podium

      • jaye says:

He’s too old for that ish. I was hoping he’d stop wearing it once he was out of his teens.

  5. GoodCapon says:

    Lochte is a hottie 😀

I was a bit surprised at Phelps finishing fourth. Anyway, he still has several more chances to get 3 medals (or how many it takes for him to be the most decorated Olympian ever) so I wouldn’t be too worried.

Although I’ve heard somewhere that this is going to be his last Olympics? Isn’t he a bit too young to retire?

    • Kaiser says:

In his 60 Minutes interview, Phelps talked about how his body doesn’t recover as quickly as it used to. He basically made it sound like his body was barely up for this Olympics.

    • Chris: now with 10% less negativity says:

When Phelps had that pot smoking drama I thought here’s a man who is not 100% dedicated. When you’re in a sport where the difference between success and failure can be as little as a hundredth of a second, I think doing something like smoking pot showed a slight loss in his appetite to succeed. And that’s fair enough. He had nothing left to prove after he immortalized himself as one of the all time greats at the last Olympics. It must be hard to get yourself up when you’ve already accomplished something you know you could never top.

      • NYC_girl says:

I watched a small video on Phelps yesterday on NBC, and he did nothing the year or so after the last Olympics, and gained over 20 pounds. I think he just started training again a year ago? Year and a half? That, in comparison to Lochte who is lifting huge honkin’ tires in the middle of the street and pulling enormous chains around his neck – Um, OK.

  6. Mirella says:

I love Lochte & am so happy he won!! Yeah, the grill is stupid, but it’s his thing.

I watched beach volleyball too & have to say, I was nervous. I’m going to go with thinking they were just trying to get their groove back.

Also, the US gymnastics men’s team? Holy crap, they’re all so hot!

    • Kaiser says:

OMG, the Cuban-American kid is GORGE. He’s my new favorite.

      • TG says:

Yes that Bronx kid is super cute. I have never had much interest in men’s gymnastics but last night it dawned on me that they probably make for great bed sport even if they are not that tall.

      • mia girl says:

Kaiser – Not sure if you knew this but Lochte is also Cuban-American…his mother was born in Cuba.

      • Chris: now with 10% less negativity says:

@TG: there was a Seinfeld episode where Jerry mistakenly thought the same thing. Elaine laughed at him because she realized Jerry was disappointed that the gymnast he was dating didn’t use him like a pommel horse.

      • Mirella says:

Danell Leyva….sweet Jesus, he’s so hot! I feel kind of bad saying that, since they’ll all so young, but…they’re all over age 🙂

  7. autumndaze says:

I want to see the wink photo!! ;0P
    (He is cute….)

  8. Amelia says:

I was rooting for Phelps personally since he’s said it will be his last Olympics.
I do like Ryan Lochte, though, in that top photo he looks like the older, more attractive brother of Josh Hutcherson.
Loving the swimming events so far, the Olympic park has their own Murray Mound of sorts where you can scream at the big screens.

  9. Chris: now with 10% less negativity says:

And the Aussie girls kicked the American girl’s asses in the relay. Gold for Australia. Oh yeah! : )

  10. TG says:

I was so nervous watching Lochte race and watching Misty and Kerri!!! So exciting. Lochte has a super hot body. I don’t actually like swimmer’s body’s because I think they end up looking strange, but Lochte is hot. I am not a big fan of Phelps, but I do admire his talent as in his body is designed for swimming and he has worked very hard for a number of years. I watched the trials and I think this is Phelps weakest event so let’s see what he can do with the rest of the events. I liked Lochte until I saw that diamond grill and now I think he his not very intelligent outside of swimming. The thing about Phelps is he took several years off if he hadn’t he would be on top of his game. Same with our beloved Misty May and Kerri Walsh. Both of them took time of and Misty keeps threatening to retire so and they barely squeaked by in the opening match. I am worried about them. But I fell in love with them years ago when I discovered them at one of the Olympics and have followed them ever since. They are amazing and I hope they win gold but it definitely isn’t a lock this year.

One more thing I wonder why decorated Olympians come back for another year when they haven’t given it their all in training the past 4 years. It makes them look pitiful. Both Nastia Lukin and that Shawn Johnson tried to make comebacks in gymnastics and Nastia ended up looking like a sloppy messy fool at the trials. I think their egos and narcissism is much like actors and actresses sometimes it gets the best of them.

And one other thing. I just love that the Olympics are in London!! I hope the English do well. I love them!!!

    • Emily says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw Lochte’s grill and came away with a negative impression of him. Way to responsibly manage your $, man.

    • cmc says:

I agree on Lochte’s personal style choices painting him as kind of a douche. I am super rooting for him, think he’s incredibly hot and very talented, and hope he wins the gold in EVERYTHING! But…that tour of his closet interview NBC ran yesterday made me want to barf. His closet looks like something in a Kardashian house, and he showed his glittery Ryan Lochte shoes that he designed (the bottoms say Ryan on one and Lochte on the other) and said something really stupid like “yeah, when I walk around everyone knows I’m there because shoes!” I was horrified. That killed my crush! NBC really should have stayed out of his closet 🙂

      • NYC_girl says:

I agree, all those shoes looked stupid, especially the green ones he designed, but if I had the chance to have that closet, I would. The rest of the house looked pretty modest. He said the green ugly sneakers have his name on the bottom so when it’s wet people know he’s been there.

      • Liv says:

How did this happen? I mean isn’t he training all the time? Why does he have time for these stupid ideas? 😉

      • Ptitesirna says:

        +1

  11. backwards says:

He gives me false hope that all men look that sexy in a speedo.

“”I’m afraid of being a bad father,” Lochte says. “That would be terrifying if I wasn’t able to support my kids and give them everything they want.”

He doesn’t have a serious girlfriend, not to mention any children. ”

    I’M HERE RYAN!

  12. OriginalTiffany says:

Not worried at all about Misty and Kerri, they handled that team, are just getting used to playing with each other again and have never lost an Olympic game. Did get a bit of a scare in the women’s indoor volleyball yesterday. Can you tell I played since I was a kid?

Our men look good too on the “beach”.

I’ve been watching non-stop because I am a full sports addict and this is sports nirvana for me.

    • Izzy says:

Sooo… what drink do we mix for the Olympics?!

      • OriginalTiffany says:

We could do Olyritas, or do a country theme once per day. I like that.
We could have all sorts of country themed permutations. Brits, it’s your games, what’s your drink.

Something more creative than a pint please:)

The French can have a Champagne cocktail, the Italians some sort of wine drink, we could have Ouzo shot a rama for Greece. Hmmm.

      • Izzy says:

Well, whatever we’re drinking, pour me a double. I got rear-ended today, and the guy fled the scene. I did get his license plate though. Just, grrr… so pissed!!

I wonder if he’s related to The Cracken…

  13. Izzy says:

The grill is silly, but Lochte is H-O-T hot! I’d hit it. I’d hit it hard, and as often as possible. 😉

    • Smashley says:

Me too! I grew up swimming so I appreciate a hottie in a Speedo when I see one. I read Ryan is hooking up with Blair Evans, an Austrailian swimmer. Damn, too bad!

  14. andrew says:

ryan lochte smokes weed i have smoked with him before. i live in daytona beach fl, he is a great kid and swimmer just like to burn sometimes.

    • Izzy says:

Eh. So does Phelps. Lots of people do. And I doubt either of them are smoking right now. (Well, not *completely* sure about Phelps, I guess we’ll see with his performance in the Games.)

  15. Luise says:

What does it mean when you have a grill? What is it exactly? Do you still have your real teeth? Or do you have to sand your real teeth for it to adhere? Will someone please explain? Thanks.

  16. TG says:

I don’t trust the Chinese. I know lot’s of people cheat but that is a nation at least the government who wants to be known as number 1 in the world in all things at at all costs. Remember the gymnastics controvercy from Beijing? They cheated then and I believe they would cheat now.

    • Nicole says:

This seems..inappropriate? What do you mean by cheating? Most (all) of these athletes have put in a ton of work to be there and to just say, “China cheats” seems a tad xenophobic if not worse…

Also, unfortunately cheating is part of sports and people from all countries are caught doing it regularly. The drugs and stuff are often one step ahead of the tests to detect them. It’s unfortunate, but it’s not confined to certain nations.

I realize that there has been a huge push in China since Beijing in regards to sports and their athletes, and maybe I misinterpreted your comment, but I’m not sure why you’d single them out simply because they now dominate a lot of sports…China has the most people and a government pushing sports programs…it seems like it’s partially just a mathematical reality that they are now the best.

Aside: I’m not saying there aren’t issues with the Chinese government or their approach to anything, including athletics…just the broad statement seemed a bit offside to me 🙂

      • 454G says:

Thank you Nicole!! I’m Chinese and your comment really touched my heart. Good to know that rational, reasonable, intelligent people like you still exist in the world.

      • Nicole says:

You’re welcome! But there is really no need to thank me, you definitely don’t have to be Chinese to be offended by that attitude.

I’m a bit surprised and sad no one else felt the need to comment on something like that. Although this was a post about Ryan Lochte’s beauty, so hopefully everyone was just too distracted by that to notice the negativity.

      • jaye says:

I 100% agree with you, Nicole.

  17. Dimebox says:

Thank heavens the organizers would not allow Lochte to wear the grill when he received his medal.

  18. The Original Mia says:

Lochte cracks me up. He’s just having fun. He’s incredibly dedicated to his swimming and that’s all that matters. Same with Phelps. He smoked pot. Big whoopty doo. He wasn’t smoking while swimming, so I never understood the outrage. He’s human. So is Ryan. They are good boys. Go USA!

  19. hoya_chick says:

The thing is Ryan has been training diligently for the last 4 years for these events. Phelps, by his own admission was a bit listless after those epic wins in Beijing. He wasn’t even going to participate in this race and only trained for it for last 10 months (it definitely showed! He didn’t even medal!). The months/years of partying while Ryan was working his cute little ass off has paid off for sure. That tire he trains with is crazy lol. You can definitely see that Ryan is hungrier this time around he was overshadowed by Phelps in ’08. I hope this is his year! I want him to win gold in everything he competes. I don’t mind the grill it’s whatever. Lol.

I don’t hate Phelps, I was all about him 4 years ago but his douchy behavior after the games turned me way off.

The men’s gymnastics team has definitely won me over! I’m usually only into the women’s but yea…..they kept showing that picture of them all shirtless and I was sold! So happy for them. With China flattering they have a great chance at a medal.

I’m so far really enjoying the games. I’m even watching things I didn’t watch last time. Like beach volleyball. It was very exciting so I’m definitely going to be following them.

Our basketball team won this morning against France (I woke up at 9:30am to watch lol)! My favorite part was when after the win they all went over to Michelle Obama and gave her sweaty hugs lol.

Looking forward to track and Usian Bolt as well as some more gymnastics. Oh and less Secreast….what is that about? Gross.

    • TG says:

You summed it up a bit better than I did above and I agree with you something about Phelps turned me off after the Beijing Olympics and his mom looking like an overstuffed partridge in the stands annoyed me too. But, Ryan is making it hard to want to root for him with that grill? I was all for him and I am still all for him but I am thinking he isn’t any better than phelps outside of the pool at last. Also, that whole 8 gold medals thing has always rubbed me the wrong way because to me at least if you win some of your medals in a relay than you shouldn’t be able to take the honor on your own. I mean he is/was a stellar swimmer but all I care about is how many medals did he win individualy? I don’t like this I am mr 8 gold medals then when some of them came from relays. It completely ignores the other 3 particiapants who helped him acheive his gold medal wins.

I am really into the cycling too. Was glad to see that British woman win silver this morning and she was so gracious in her talk to NBC afterwards. Takes some guts to do a bike race. And can’t wait for more Usain Bolt as well. I of course want Americans to win, but one can’t help but like Usain’s confidence and even cockiness. He just does it in a way that seems geniune unlike some of the annoying american men sprinters of the past. Mo Greene for one. Glad he is gone could never stand him and his toungue thrusts. Yuck.

      • hoya_chick says:

Ha! thanks! ” his mom looking like an overstuffed partridge in the stands annoyed me too”….HAHAHA this is terrible but hilarious. I agree about the relay win in ’08 Micheal actually didn’t swim well in his first leg. If it wasn’t for Jason Lezak (sp?) the French team would have won the gold.

Re Usain: full disclosure, I am Jamaican and I spent a lot of my childhood summers there so I absolutely love him and his cockiness is a cultural thing. That’s the confidence we (they) carry themselves with. It’s not meant to offend it’s totally innate. lol, and the man backs it up with talent so I can’t help but like him.

  20. bgirl says:

The grill gives me douche chills.

  21. NYC_girl says:

I love swimming and diving. I would never get up on that platform. Gymnastics gives me major anxiety. I can’t watch them, esp when they land on their ass or mess up a dismount. I did have the men on last night. I watched the men and women’s bike race – 4 hours long, on a skinny bike, in the rain, up hill. I can barely make it up 3 flights of stairs.

Ryan’s grill is stupid – but at least he’s not sporting a gold tooth.

    • hoya_chick says:

Hahaha me too….I feel like so out of shape when I watch these events. I mean I try to work out 4-5 times a week and I feel like I am pretty healthy and I live in a 4 story walk up and all that jazz. But for shame, I feel like a whale compared to these people. So much respect for all these athletes! Beautiful what the human body can do and look like! All the sports accentuate a different physique and body type. It’s great to see. I actually went out and bought cherries, apples, grapes and lots of veggies to make snacks to munch on while I watch instead of the wings and chips my bf wanted to make so props to me for that lol.

I also agree with you about the dismounts and the falls in gymnastics. I hold my breath each time, but it’s so amazing when they stick the landing and pull it off. I’m up and cheering like a stage mom or something. I can’t help but watch!

  22. TheOriginalMaxi says:

oh I love Ryan! He’s so cute! His dimples and blue eyes! ahhhhhh and his bod! I hope we get to see more of him after the games!

  23. Camille (The original) says:

I’m not seeing the ‘hotness’ or ‘cute’ here at all. I do see a couple of fug guys though. :-

    However, congrats on the medals.

  24. Princess Lizabeth says:

Lochte makes me think of Daniel Craig.

  25. TG says:

@hoya_chick – Yes, that is what I was saying about Usain Bolt. Yes, he is cocky but he backs it up with talent, but also I feel there is a certain since of playfulness about his attitude and not like some of the obnoxious american men sprinters of past. I just love how the Lightening Bolt set a world record while showboating down the runway in Beijing! He is amazing, hope he still has it.

  26. Mrs.Darcy says:

I can’t hate on Phelps too much, he kind of owned up to his douchery recently. And the U.K. commentators were saying he is mainly focused on the shorter events now, he wasn’t really expected to medal. He actually showed a lot of promise in the medley last night, I think they made a mistake putting hot boy of the moment last as he couldn’t finish the job, whereas Phelps still showed he can motor when he needs to. France just ripped that medal from underneath them, Lochte was weak in that position and they should have kept Phelps in for the finish.

    • TG says:

Completely agree. Phelps delivered in a big way last night in the relay. Lochte was the very obvious weak link. I am sure it is because of the swims he had to do earlier in the day but still they should have gone with someone fresher or put Phelps last. But I was very impressed with that last French swimmer he was amazing. I have gotten to the point where I just really admire courage, talent and hard work no matter what country the people are from. Watching those gymnasts last night I was disappointed for each woman/girl who faltered. I want to see beautiful gymnastics and whomever takes the gold I want to be someone deserving not just because your closest opponent faltered. It seems gymnastics and ice skating are similar in that respect. No matter how good one is on any given night the laws of physics can work against you if you aren’t 100 percent precise in your moves. Anyway, great Games and I am enjoying reading all comments on here! Can someone please explain why the gymnasts put their hair in that very sloppy ponytail? I call it the britney. If I were a judge I would take off points for presentation.

      • Mrs.Darcy says:

I keep missing the gymnastics, and they are my favorite! Are they still wearing lots of glitter?! I agree the French deserved the win, they had an amazing comeback. I totally had my head in the sand the year Phelps won all his medals (plus I live abroad) so I didn’t get as oversaturated with him as most Americans so he doesn’t bug me that much. I felt like when the U.S. team came out they did not look like a united front the way the other teams did, I had a feeling they were going to lose it. Agree Lochte probably used all of his energy in his earlier race, then again Phelps was in the same race (didn’t medal mind but coming fourth I can’t imagine he used up THAT much less energy). Who knows. The order of the swimmers did seem political but I’m sure there is more to it than that.

  27. ramona says:

Lochte’s not a very common surname, but I’m glad I share it with the guy who’s getting all the attention. 🙂 It’s only my married name, but I wonder if he’s related to my husband…

  28. TG says:

@Mrs.Darcy – Some of the Russians had on a lot of glitter in their hair and face, but I actually thought it was cute and added to the drama. I was grateful to see that they aren’t wearing as many colored barretts in their hair and many of them have stopped using the dreaded scrunchy, but in place of that they are just taking their ponytail and flipping it in half sort of like you might do on a Saturday morning cleaining your house. See all those horrible photos of britney spears over the years and you will see what I am talking about. I like a tight pony tail or put the hair in a bun but sloppiness just looks bad. The Americans, were leading the pack in sloppy hair. I miss the good divas of gymnastics. I adored Svetlana Khorkina back in the day.

  29. bisolar says:

Kaiser. You were so right.I like the way u are so right almost always.Phelps is now d most decorated olympian.U did say d loss in the 400m medley was d push he needed, and dat he would win some, and Rochte will win some and it will be fine. And it really was. They won gold in d same relay they need in beijing and phelps put out all the stops like you predicted.
Waoh!U r genius. So happy Phelps won something(As I guess u realise by all my rambling)
