Lea Michele scored a “huge” L’Oreal beauty contract: is she worth it?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I think Lea Michele is a very pretty young woman. She has lovely skin, a pretty face and gorgeous eyes. My problem with Lea is two-fold: one, her styling almost always sucks; and two, her attitude (more often than not) sucks as well. These are photos of Lea from last week’s Glee premiere event. Has Lea done herself any favors by allowing herself to be styled this way? Look at those awful highlights/ombre hair crap. Look at her too-heavy eye-makeup, which looks caked on.

So, where am I going with this? Lea has been made the newest face of L’Oreal, joining other spokemodels like Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. This is a big deal, and a huge, career-changing contract for Lea. But does she deserve it?

Lea Michele has landed a huge beauty contract with L’Oréal, Page Six has exclusively learned. The “Glee” star will be unveiled later this month as the face of the French cosmetics giant, following Eva Longoria, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez.

Michele has talked openly about her beauty, telling Allure, “When I was 15 . . . a manager said, ‘You have to get a nose job in order for me to work with you.’ My mother would say to me, ‘Barbra Streisand never got a nose job. You’re not getting a nose job.’ ”

[From Page Six]

What’s good about this: it’s great that L’Oreal went with a Jewish woman. I’m sorry for saying that so bluntly, but I couldn’t figure out a way to talk around it. From what I can see, Jewish women don’t get many beauty contracts, and I like that L’Oreal is committed to representing and appealing to women of diverse ethnicities and races, as opposed to just making an endless stream of WASPy blonde models and starlets their representatives to the world.

What’s bad about this: Lea is going to be even more insufferable now. But I really, really hope that someone at L’Oreal makes her get rid of those bangs, and makes her fix that terrible dye job. Here’s hoping!

Ugh. I really don’t like this girl. There are plenty of other young actresses. Kat Dennings? (Kat is Jewish too, and not a snotty diva!)

    • anna says:

Her biggest problem is her attitude

    • Bodhi says:

      Kat is WAY prettier too

    • Suzz54 says:

I think it’s her attitude that makes me not like her and find her not pretty. I am a person that your attitude is what makes you a beautiful person or an ugly person…I wouldn’t last a day in Hollywood.

    • L says:

      Troll alert from @bee.

      Someone needs to simmer down.

    • why? says:

So, that’s it? You’re just going to leave it up here as fact that Lea Michele is “Jewish”? No correction? And then of course you’re going to run stories on actual full-blooded Jews, like Natalie Portman, Logan Lerman, Mila Kunis, etc. with no mention whatsoever that they are Jews? That’s nice.

So, ok, according to the mainstream media, both Lea Michele and Sam Bacile, the fictional anti-Muslim filmmaker, are Jews. Great. Why don’t they get married then? Have ugly hook-nosed children?

      • Izzy says:

@why? – I will absolutely concede that point to you. But whether someone is half-Jewish is even beside the point, isn’t it? I don’t think it should ultimately matter whether someone is Jewish in order to give them an endorsement contract. These companies should be picking people who set good examples as people. That does NOT describe Lea Michele.

Having said that, yeah, if they’re going to pick someone Jewish, couldn’t they have picked someone who doesn’t represent us so badly? She’s just such a jerk, and well known for being so.

      • JennDama says:

@why?- I find your post disgusting. “ugly hooked nose children”, how tasteless! What Sam Bacile has done by making that horrible movie is no where near Lea Michele’s nasty attitude. So please do not lump them together! For some reason your post smacked of anti-semitic feelings, IMHO. I am a Caucasian Protestant so it is not my religion or race to be defending. I just believe that and prejudice should be called out.
On that note I do not like Lea Michele at all. Her diva attitude makes her unattractive to me. I really believe she will not be a good fit for Loreal. She is defiantly not worth it, pun intended!!

      • ebmem says:

Sam Bacile is not a real person, and he isn’t a Jew. The fact that you clearly think he exists and that he’s Jewish means someone needs to lock the mainstream media racists up and throw away the key.

  2. chloe says:

does anyone like this girl? seriously

    • endlesscircles says:

For as much as I get on these gossip blogs and read the rags, I have never seen “Glee” or seen this girl speak.

I do think she’s beautiful. She’s natural; not plastic. And she’s the real deal in terms of talent, unlike the Kardashians.

      • Julian says:

Lol you think shes talented but have never heard her talk or seen her act before, wow, that’s pretty amazing. Im presuming most of her biggest fans are the same as you

    • I love her! I think she’s gorgeous, incredibly talented and fun to watch both on screen and on the red carpet.

I don’t see why many hate her so much, there are WAY more offensive celebs out there…

    • Mourning the Death of Music says:

      Not I.

  3. cici says:

Is she Jewish? I thought I read an article that said she’s of Italian heritage?

    • Kaiser says:

Her mother is Italian, I think, while her dad is Jewish.

    • Raven says:

I’d always thought she was Italian as well. That said, it’s a company decision and they must think she appeals to their demographic. If they find they are wrong, they’ll drop her.

    • linlin says:

Italian is a nationality while Judaism is a religion so why couldn’t her mother be both? There are Italian Jews, you know.
Actually, acording to wikipedia her mother is an Italian catholic while her father is a Spanish Jew. Since in Judaism it is the mother who decides the religion of the baby (since pater semper incertas) and she also was raised catholic she does have jewish ancestors but isn’t Jewish.

      • hellena says:

Thank you, I was seriously perplexed by this kind of talk.

      • Bodhi says:

What linlin said, thank you. It bugs me when people mistake religion & ethnicity

      • Kaiser says:

Jewish people are Semitic. It IS a race. Lea is half Sephardic Jew, that IS her ethnicity.

      • Chordy says:

Actually, Judaism is the religion, but Jewish people are considered an ethnic group of people with Hebrew origins (there are also ethnic subgroups within the ethnicity). There are ethnically and culturally Jewish but not religiously Jewish people, and people who convert to Judaism are also welcomed as ethnically jewish. It’s far more complicated than one can explain in the comments section of a gossip site, but it is considered an ethnicity.

Side note: ethnicity and race are two different things so there’s that.

      • ShugAveryPee says:

Well Judaism is both an ethnicity and a religion… There are a lot of people that consider themselves Jewish by blood but have not practiced it at all… Honestly there are very few jews in hollywood that are actually fully jewish by religion… I went to school with a lot of jewish kids who went to hebrew school and they all agreed it was both religion and race

  4. KellyinSeattle says:

No, she does not deserve the contract. She’s not even pretty; looks like Paula Abdul in drag.

  5. TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

No not in the least another celeb taking a gig from a real model (there are many non-white models that could represent Joan Smalls for starters); I thought she was an actress/singer – then for the love of God, act and sing, that should be enough and if you can do it well there’s plenty enough money to be made. But we know what taking this gig signifies.

    • MsKat says:

Kudos to Leah and other women who present a different standard of what is called beauty. Her hair was an attempt to do something different. It looks summery and she will change it soon enough. Cut her some slack for trying. Sigh …

  6. Camille says:

Are you sure that she will be “the face” of something? Maybe she will be the leg or the back or the boob of something. It’d be more… hmm suitable.

  7. Nessa says:

No, she does not deserve it because she is FUG!!!!

  8. Harpreet says:

Kaiser, you know what this means right?? Lea doing her posing routine in CANNES!! I am looking forward to that actually!

And she is a surprising choice, she joins Freida Pinto as the youngest face of the brand, but Lea seems too youthful for L’Oreal. She’d be great as a CoverGirl, a more fun, music-friendly brand.

  9. Happy21 says:

I think she deserves it. She is a bit insufferable but she is very pretty and she is young and fresh. Most of L’oreal’s ‘faces’ are older, more mature. Not young and fun. I think this is a good move for them.

  10. NerdMomma says:

Don’t anyone smack me for saying this but…I think a red lip would have totally brought that look together and she would have looked fantastic. It’s the frosty lip that’s ruining it. Christina Aguilera needs to put the red lipstick away, and Lea Michele needs to bust it out.

  11. shontay says:

I never thought she was attractive and a lot of that has to do with her attitude. Her style is hit or miss with me. In the pictures above, her hair and dress are terrible, but I have no problem with her eye makeup. I think it’s sexy.

  12. muppet_barbershop says:

Ultimately I like seeing a beautiful, Roman/Semitic-nosed lady get this kind of contract. So sure, she deserves it. Hopefully, literally being just a pretty face will teach her some humility.

  13. Fudge you, I'm going to Guam! says:

    Sure, why not?
Why is everyone so harsh when it comes to this girl?
I for one am glad that isn’t yet another Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart type average looking, plain, white, no lips, no hips, nose fixed, thin, tall and boring looking starlet.
Give me something new! Something different, god damnit am I the only one who is bored as bloody f*ck of seeing the same type of faces plastered everywhere!?
I can’t be. I refuse to believe that.
Even Strom Thurmond wanted variety. No one wants to eat the same dish everyday. Variety is the spice of life after all.

  14. kibbles says:

She does not deserve the contract and she is not attractive both in terms of her physical appearance and her personality. There are so many beautiful Jewish girls out there. As someone mentioned above, Kat Dennings would make a great Cover Girl. Kat’s got the body, the humor, and the face. I think more people would be happier about this if Lea wasn’t such a diva. The biggest problem has always been her attitude, her attempts to look sexy, and posing mad hard on the red carpet. This contract will make her even worse.

    • Carolyn says:

      Team Kat!

L’Oreal’s intentions are glaringly obvious. They’ve done research to show that young people aren’t buying their products and have chosen Lea to get the Glee-age crowd.

If you look at L’Oreal globally they choose very high profile actresses/ oops “spokesmodels” for each market to appeal to the local target audience. Smart move by them to choose Lea. If she doesn’t generate sales they’ll end her contract.

  15. lucy2 says:

It’s nice that they hired someone other than a cookie cutter blonde starlet or whatever, but they probably should have done it about 3 years ago, when Glee was still popular.

  16. Fofototto says:

Too bad it’s not for L’Oreal hair products, they might’ve been able to do something with her busted weave. It looks like all her extension wefts tangled together. I don’t get why she uses such poor quality hair. But I do like her face makeup.

  17. BettyBoop says:

Um.. Natalie Portman and ScarJo get plenty of “beauty” contracts, and their mothers are both Ashkenazi, so technically, they are more ethnically Jewish than Lea.

I get the point; Lea is more unconventional looking than the other two and that should be celebrated, but it came across as a bit ignorant of Jewish women as a whole.

    • Izzy says:

@BettyBoop, I understand your point, and even agree with it. Now I just sound confused, don’t I? Seriously, I can see it from all sides. It’s not about the Jewish thing so much as it is that there are other Jewish or half-Jewish actresses out there that set a better example as a human being. For that matter, there are also plenty of other non-Jewish actresses who set better examples. I’d rather see one of them be put into the marketing spotlight.

  18. Kris says:

Over her, I mean does anyone even care about her anymore? Does anyone even care about Glee? You know what I don’t care about, her cleavage. Her boobs in that dress makes her look like she has pecs of a man who works out too much.

  19. Krissie says:

That face ugh. She looks like a younger Lainie Kazan. I just don’t get it.

  20. Dee says:

If they can take her look from busted to beautiful, I’ll take a second look at their products.

Everything about her is harsh: her look, her attitude. I hope they give he a new “prettier” look.

  21. Dee says:

    Posting oops!

  22. Jenna says:

Didn’t even read the article, just had to say how brilliant that tag line was because I laughed and laughed and laughed…

  23. Seagulls says:

I don’t like anything about her looks or the way she presents herself. I miss real models doing modeling.

  24. orange says:

Ew! She is so ugly, inside and out. I thought the point of makeup ads were to make you want to look as good as the model, but who would want to look like her? She’s got old lady face, it’s not her fault, just unfortunate features. I’d feel bad for her if she didn’t seem so insufferable and wasn’t on Glee, the most horrid show ever put on TV (and that’s saying an awful lot).

  25. moja31 says:

when i think of beauty contracts, i think of women that are fresh faced, and/or naturally striking. lea michele is always so overly made up & fake tanned; i hope when they roll her out as their new face, they’ll also take the opportunity to tone all that down a bit, it would greatly benefit her.

  26. Samantha says:

It’s kind of depressing that people think she’s ugly just because she doesn’t have the typical white-bread starlet look. She has a big nose–so? She’s still a very pretty woman. And ferociously talented.

So what if she’s a bitchy diva? That just makes her like 99% of the rest of Hollywood.

ETA: Though I must say, she looked better before she started trying to shove herself into the Hollywood mold. In that first season of Glee, in the early episodes before the hair and the tan and the weight loss, she was so fresh and unique.

    • orange says:

I think she’s ugly because to me, she is ugly. It has nothing to do with her being “white-bread”, which is pretty derogatory towards people’s looks as well. Everyone has different tastes and beauty is subjective. It’s kind of lame to be all offended about people criticizing her looks then turn around and criticize the looks of others, wouldn’t you say? Or is “white-bread” blonde, blue eyes, etc the only acceptable target? With all the hatred here towards “white-bread” people, I’d really like to know who finds them attractive because every single post about looks there’s someone being hateful and saying things that would get them banned if they said it about ANY other race, color, ethnicity, etc.

      • Samantha says:

There’s no hate there. I didn’t say there’s anything wrong with that look or the people who have it. My problem is with people who act as if that’s the only standard of beauty.

    • ShaSha says:

She’s very pretty and very talented and her problem is that people want to buy into the diva rumors, without caring whether or not they’re true. There’s more good than bad out there about her, but sites like this and the type of people who post to them , don’t really care.

Agree with you about her recent red carpet looks though. Just too much in my honest opinion.

  27. Duckie says:

I think she’s beautiful, and she’ll definately appeal to a younger client base. I heard rumors about her personality, but that was when glee had just started. I don’t think she’s like that at all know, or personally I don’t think Cory Monteith would have taken a second look at her!
Overall a really good choice, she’s pretty unusual looking but still beautiful. It makes me really upset when people call her fug or ugly because she really isn’t.

    • taxi says:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Glad you like her “look”. I don’t find her at all attractive. “..still beautiful” is not an absolute, it’s just an opinion reflecting personal taste. Mine is that she’s not anywhere close to pretty or even cute.

  28. skuddles says:

I really don’t find her all that attractive (although she does have a nice complexion) – seems a bit odd they’d give her a beauty contract….

  29. Lizzie says:

Lea Michelle is a cruel and heartless spoiled brat! She had the gall to poke fun at a form of Autism – the same form my baby sister has. I hope Karma lets loose on her skanky tail! I will stop using all products put out by Loreal.

  30. Sorry but she is just not physically beautiful in the face. She’s not hideous, but she’s just average looking. Certainly nothing you’d look twice at, to me. Which seems an odd choice for a beauty contract when all the other L’Oreal models are literally stunning. They will have to airbrush the crap out of her face to make her look even halfway decent. When people say Lea M is beautiful I think they need an eye test. She’s just totally meh.

  31. John says:

that SUPERBIG honker. THAT IS NOT GONNA PHOTOGRAPH WELL. NASTY.

  32. Nev says:

she is gonna work those commercials and have a ball!!!!

she enjoys it and I enjoy her!!!!

    go on girl!!!!

    (she ain’t budget!!!!!!)

  33. Well says:

Excited for her! She never seems to be wearing much makeup in her pap pics, and looks really gorgeous then. She has enviably even and healthy skin. Hopefully this contract will encourage her and her team to go back to the more natural, fresh looks on the red carpet, rather than the overdone everything they’ve been favoring lately.

  34. lena says:

loreal is still testing beauty products on animals.

i dont support any products of loreal and i dont support celebrities who support loreal.

  35. Debsa says:

No, really L’Oreal you couldn’t find anyone else…

  36. M says:

“What’s good about this: it’s great that L’Oreal went with a Jewish woman…”

Rachel Weisz and Julianna Margulies are spokeswomen for L’Oreal as well. And they are probably more Jewish than Lea Michelle.

  37. Leen says:

I actually think Lea Michele is pretty but my god her attitude makes her really damn ugly to me.

  38. Irishae says:

    There can only be one:

    http://goo.gl/ggHA4

(On a side note, had completely forgotten he was even in that movie.)

  39. taxi says:

L’oreal is apparently targeting the brunette buyer with olive skin. They’ve done it for a while. Has to be the result of marketing demographic polls.

Won’t have much pull for those with very different coloring, but majority rules.

  40. dana says:

She’s pretty and has a nice body, but she’d be so much prettier if she had gotten that nose job.

  41. V says:

Uh…so because she has a fkn huge nose she is a “Jewish beauty”? Really?

Looks like a post op, has bad attitude and can’t act for shit.
