Gwyneth Paltrow in a Michael Kors cut-out LBD in NYC: unflattering or decent?

These are some new photos of the 2012 Golden Heart Awards (for God’s Love We Deliver) in NYC last night. Gwyneth Paltrow was definitely the biggest “get” of the event, although there was a surprising amount of models and supermodels at the event too. But let’s discuss Goop, shall we? She’s wearing Michael Kors. It is a DISASTER. This is what pisses me off (consistently) about Gwyneth: she works really, really hard on her body and her “look” and then simply doesn’t know what styles look best on her body. I really think that in Gwyneth’s mind, she works super-hard on her body and thus, she can wear any style she wants because she looks so good. But seriously, while her body looks good, she’s still rather square-shaped, and square-shaped people should not wear dresses with cut-outs in the mid-section. Goop does this look way too often. Plus, the effect of cleavage cut-out makes her look saggy.

Something nice: her face looks pretty good. Not as sun-damaged as it’s looked over the past few years. Maybe she’s found a really good night cream.

Seth Meyers and his girlfriend Alexi Ashe. Did I just break your heart? I’m sorry, he does have a girlfriend. They’ve been together for a while.

Erin Heatherton in a weird Michael Kors dress – ugh. She’s a lot prettier and she has a much better body than how she looks here.

Olivia Munn in Michael Kors (Kors was one of the main sponsors of the event, I think). This dress is so cheap-looking!

Goop looks hilariously bad in that dress.

    • Bella says:

Women in certain age should not wear this type of dress. In other words – she is simply too old and looks like tired and very surprised hooker. Her eye makeup is horrible.

      • BooBooLaRue says:

        Ditto.

      • annaloo. says:

I don’t even think it’s a question of being too old to wear this..as Lainey would say, there is too much try in this. I think this same dress would look incredible on someone like Rachel Weisz or even Cate Blanchett, and these women are older than Goop (I think…). Gwyneth is missing that “It” factor to convince anyone that she can pull this look off. Plus the woman has the sex appeal of cornstalk. She looks – again – like she is forcing a look that doesn’t work.

      • Pandy says:

the sex appeal of a cornstalk! That is actually a perfect description of her.

      • Annie says:

It’s not really her age imo – on any woman older than a teenager, the potential to look like a hooker in a dress like this is huge…Gwyneth has a great body, but unfortunately does not quite pull this dress off and does look cheap here which I doubt is the look she would go for. It makes her look larger than she is too.

    • LeslieM says:

Awful! What was she thinking. That dress would look bad on a younger person. It looks terrible on her.

    • alons-y alonso says:

This is the kind of dress I see Kate Bosworth wearing…yeah!

    • acp says:

I honestly can’t find anything wrong with this picture of Goop. To me, she looks FANTASTIC – and she consistently is my physical fitness role model, when I endlessly work out at the gym for 90-120 mins each day.

      • DrM says:

I see Gwynnie’s friends have taken to defending her on boards again…she looks hard…has nothing to do with her fitness either. The eye makeup and the dress make her look hard as hell…

  2. Charlotte says:

….at least her hair is different.

  3. Birdix says:

Why do goop’s eyes look so much bigger? Is it the makeup?

  4. Belle Epoch says:

I don’t get Michael Kors. That silver dress looks like Project Runway contrstants had to use Jiffy Pop to make a “fashion forward dress suitable for a celebrity.” Gwynnie’s black dress is just nasty looking IMHO – a combination of going out for a lobster dinner and a black bathing suit.

    • BW says:

It looks like she has her dress tucked up in her panties, by accident. She is wearing panties, right?

      • lori says:

I thought the same thing. Then realised it was Olivia Munn and doubted panties were the problem.

    • Me Too says:

Michael Kors is so over rated! Can’t watch PR anymore because I find it hard to watch him tell the designers how bad their stuff looks! And his Ready to Wear stuff is even worse than his designer stuff. Actually, I think, Heidi’s style is so over the top and gauche as well! And there they sit telling contestants what’s wrong with their design. Not a fan!

  5. Mimi says:

Does the darker eye makeup on Goopy belie a bit of tweaking hmm?

  6. effy says:

    Gweneth’s face looks good.

  7. Ranunculus says:

I like the dress and the hair looks good with it, but the shoes somehow don’t match the outfit imho. Other than that I think Goopy looks good. She saved a seagull on the set of Iron Man 3 recently and named the bird Robbie 3PO (her nickname for RDJ) according to the National Enquirer.

  8. ukuk says:

what is the meaning of being dressed like a hooker on a charity event? i don’t get it.

  9. bea says:

IMO, you need to be voluptuos to wear the cut out dress. She is not.

  10. mst says:

I think that dress might be a bit top young for her

  11. Davidbowie says:

Gwyennie looks pregnant or maybe she got her boobs done.

  12. dooliloo says:

    oh Goop… I can’t… *facepalm*

  13. Jackie O says:

goop trying to be sexy makes me cringe.

  14. becky says:

Seth’s girlfriend is so lovely. Well-done.

    • Bluedog says:

Seth’s girlfriend looks like he would look if he were a woman. It’s weird when people date themselves like that. Lance Armstrong and his ex Sheryl Crow look alike, as do Noah Wyle and his wife and Mick Jagger and Bianca. It’s so narcissistic.

  15. Kasey says:

    TWO thoughts:
1- I LOVED the circle, square, triangle cuts then I saw the ribs & back cutout-NO. If this dress had stopped the cutout thing with the triangle cleavage I think it would have looked a LOT better and actually nice on her (seriously, cover the last cutout area w/ your finger and take a gander).

2- I hope this dress doesn’t come in a size 4 because its exactly the kind of thing Kim K would try to wear and end up looking a hot, disastrous mess in. Yes, I brought KK into this but it WAS my 2nd thought and appropriate IMO!

  16. Sara says:

I hate cut out dresses. Maybe on a twenty something starlet but after 30, its a no for me even with a great body like hers.

  17. Shitler says:

You mean Olivia Munn makes all dresses cheap looking

  18. Sookie says:

Gwenyth needs to realize that she’s 40 not 24!

    • Becky1 says:

I’m 40 and have a similar sort of shape as Gwyneth (straight up and down-small boobs and hips with no defined waist) and even in my 20’s I wouldn’t wear this. It’s trashy and it’s not flattering. She’s slim and fit but the dress emphasizes her mid-section.

  19. Maggi says:

She looks great! I don’t see sagging cleave (she had that in the awful goth oscars Alexander McQueen but not here). Her face looks good, looks a bit botoxed but not tragic plastic. The cut outs kind of create interest in the squarish ness of her torso. Overall, she looks great! Just compare to the cheapness of Erin and Olivia. Both of these women are arguably much better looking but look so generic in comparison.

  20. lulu says:

HATE cutout dresses. so cheesy looking. Goopy looks so ‘refreshed’, no?

Michael Kors designs some hideous dresses. Jeesh, he’s so overrated.

  21. bns says:

Gwyneth’s face is too hard. She’s too damn skinny.

  22. MG says:

I like Goop’s dress, just not on Goop. That dress would look great on Halle Berry. I think Erin looks great. I like the simplicity of her dress and I love the color.

  23. G says:

I think the dress is good and looks good on her.

I can’t for the life of me, though, figure out where in the world it would be appropriate to wear something like this? Spring break in Cabo?

  24. Melissa says:

Goop’s face looks a lot like Julie Bowen here. Definite No on the dress – she’s not curvy, she’s straight, and the dress does nothing for her figure.

    • j.eyre says:

That is exactly what I thought re: Julie Bowen. And I mean that in a good way – I agree she looks good and I dislike the dress.

Because I am too lazy to post twice – Seth Meyer’s is sexy and his girlfriend is beautiful. I hope they are happy.

    • Kloops says:

Yep. This. Goop has no apparent sexuality. She’s pretty, to be sure, but she can’t pull off this look despite what nonsense she tells herself.

  25. lucy2 says:

I don’t like most cut out dresses to begin with, but this one is unflattering to her figure.

  26. Scarlet Vixen says:

Gwynnie and the other blonde should’ve traded dresses–the orange dress would look much better on Gwynnie & the cut-out dress would look better on Erin Heatherton’s curvier (& younger) figure.

And Olivia Munn looks like she has her dress tucked into the leg hole of her undies. I think Kors is such a crap designer–the only reason I still put up with him on Project Runway is because he’s funny.

  27. annaloo. says:

Gwyneth is not the woman for this dress. On someone like Rachel Weisz or Jennifer Connelly, it would be stunning… on her, it loses impact. She’s just not “sexy”.

  28. snappyfish says:

why does goop always try to be sexy? she’s about as sexy as a popsicle. plus, she is too old and her body is too rectangular for this dress.

she would look so much better if she dressed more conservatively, a la charlotte from sex & the city, or similar.

    • Maggi says:

Actually Popsicles can be quite sexy in the right context. also, she should dress conservatively?! because she is OLD?! Gross! When I hit forty I am not going to start dressing like I have matronly hips if my body is fit and tight. And Charlotte had the worst wardrobe.

  29. dcypher1 says:

I also want to add that goopy here thinks she can rap buy she just sounds annoying. what could she possibly rap about her hoity toity life girl please no one wants to hear that sh!t.

  30. Ainsley says:

This is a midlife crisis dress… She’s fit, but she just tries so hard lately. The shoes should be burned.

    • Ally8 says:

Looks like she’s going to the same Botox guy as Julie Bowen. They could be twins now… chipmunk-cheeked emaciated twins.

  31. blonde on the dock says:

I think Gwyneth looks beautiful here. I like the dress on her. What does age have to do with it if she looks good? I dont see any flab or droopyness.

    • Maggi says:

      +100000
I am really turned off by the not so subtle age-ism here. Fair enough if she were flabby or wrinkly but that is simply not the case. Her maturity adds chic to the dress, where the dress would become cheap on a young starlet. I despise people who age-shame women and come up with ridiculous rules about what women can or cannot wear. It’s gross.

      • lafairy says:

amen!this rampant ageism is quite annoying!I certainly will not choose a more conservative style when I will turn 40! Especially If I will have this kind of great body she has!

  32. lori says:

Is this the same dress Keibler wore out with George Clooney the other nite?

  33. Really? says:

Now ladies, this is exactly how you look 3 days after a visit to the plastic surgeon for fresh botulism injections, word! The dress, and the botox, only looks good IN THE DARK.

Sorry y’all, but Seth Meyers is THE poor girl’s Hugh Grant.

  34. savedbykittylitter says:

Boring, that dress would have look better on somebody else IMO

    • Loira says:

Claire Danes is the queen of this type of dresses. Slim, but with a waist, most minimalistic dresses looked gorgeous on her, but even she has changed her style lately, more feminine, and with her pregnancy moreso.
Gwynnie… No thanks, her torso does not help

  35. RdyfrmycloseupmrDvlle says:

I think Goop was going for “edgy” and smokey-eyed” and she failed on both counts. I really wish she’d stop trying so hard for these looks. Its just embarrassing. But, SHES embarrassing, period. Truly clueless.

  36. twoblues says:

    Goop is simply insufferable.

  37. Suzie says:

The black dress is quite a nice original cut, and symmetrical, but would look better tapered to the ankle rather than knee, and possibly with a black sequin strip just below the waist to break the monotony, but overall not too bad on her. Pearl stud ear-rings would have been a nice finishing touch.

  38. Snowpea says:

    Ummm, elephant? Room?

Gwyneth looks so tweaked it’s not even funny! Eye makeup, good eye cream, whatevs…she looks like she’s just had some serious botoxing around the eye area and it looks shambolic.

I agree with all the other posters, though, in that put Gwynnie in a lovely wide tailored pant and a beautiful silk blouse in an emerald green, pull the hair back into a low chignon – TRES MAGNIFIQUE! ; )

  39. Mrs. Ari Gold says:

Goop has definitely tweaked her face. I don’t know what ahe did but I think it was a mistake. Her face looked good before and she didn’t need it.

Fillers? Eye job? Her cheeks look weird as do her eyes.

  40. Al says:

All the neck lines (except Erin’s) are too high and make these beautiful women look as if them have short squatty necks. GOOP looks like she’s being choked!

  41. Trashaddict says:
