Michael Jackson is gravely ill and needs a lung transplant

Michael Jackson may be legitimately sick and not just faking it to get out of testifying in court, according to In Touch. The mag claims Jackson is gravely ill and suffers from an illness called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which is so severe that he needs a lung transplant. However he also has uncontrolled gastrointestinal bleeding, which is what might ultimately kill him. He’s also so weak that he may not be able to undergo a transplant. Jackson is said to only have five percent of his vision in his left eye.

…award-winning investigative journalist Ian Halperin tells In Touch that he believes that the King of Pop is fighting for is life. “Michael has a very severe lung condition called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency,” Halperin, a New York Times best-selling author, tells In Touch exclusively. “He’s had it for years but it’s gotten worse. He needs a lung transplant but may be too weak to go through with it. He also has emphysema and chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, which his doctors have had a lot of trouble stopping. It’s the bleeding that is the most problematic part. It could kill him.”

Because this genetic disease is so rare – Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency affects just 1 in 5,000 Americans – it’s been difficult to treat, says Halperin. “For years, Michael has been working with his own doctors to make sure his condition doesn’t progress. He has been on many medications that have stabilized him.” But as the disease has progressed, Halperin says that the pop star’s quality of life has diminished. “He can barely speak,” says Halperin. “Also, the vision in his left eye is 95 percent gone.”

Brother Jermaine Jackson seemed to confirm that something was seriously wrong with Michael. “He’s not doing so well right now,” Jermaine told foxnews.com. This isn’t a good time.”

[From In Touch, Dec. 22, 2008, print ed.]

According to Wikipedia, “Severe A1A deficiency causes emphysema and/or COPD … [and] various liver diseases in a minority of children and adults. It is treated by… transplantation of the liver or lungs.” It results in a reduced life expectancy no matter what. If Michael Jackson really is sick with this, it sounds like a miserable way to live. Even if he were gravely ill, it’s hard to tell with him because he dresses and behaves so oddly that most people tend to ignore any new unusual things with him.

This might explain his wearing those face masks over his mouth. I’d bet it’s still unnecessary, but it might explain where the fear came from. And that fear which has spread to his children, who also often wear face masks in public. If Michael really is this sick, hopefully he will get the treatment he needs.

Here’s Michael Jackson out on Halloween.

If truth be told he looks like death….. even more than usual. He’s VERY skinny.

Is his hair a wig or extentions? Does anybody know?

  2. southernlady says:

At xiao he has on a lace front wig.
I hope he gets the help he needs.

  3. RReedy says:

He is a known narcotics addict ala Elvis. I don’t know if I believe this article. The man is a professional hypochondriac!

  4. Cinderella says:

He’s looked sick for years. All of that skin bleaching is catching up with him.

  5. MsTriste says:

I wonder what treatment he’s been getting. According to the wikipedia article Jaybird mentioned, the treatment is a plasma product. Is Michael still a practicing Jehovah’s Witness? Because he may have issues with receiving blood products.

Also, this is a genetic disease. I wonder how long he’s known about it and if his kids have it too.

  6. prissa says:

I feel for him. Regardless of his idiosyncracies, if he is ill I pray for his recovery. Or that he at least gets “right” with God (if he isn’t) before he passes.

  7. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Look at his hands, they freak me out so badly. Remember he was BLACK. How in the world did he get his hands to look like that? Can you *really* bleach your skin out that much??? It’s just sick. And honestly, I hate to sound callous, but something about this doesn’t ring right for me, either. It seems a bit too….convenient.

  8. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Is anyone else like me and you have just SO many questions about him?

    1. Are those really his kids? I tend to think no. They look straight up white, not even a tiny bit mixed. He didn’t bleach his genes, right?

    2. Is he really a pedophile?

    3. Is he gay?

    4. HOW did he do that to his skin? For real, y’all, how?

    5. Just….what’s wrong with him? When my daughter was only about four (ten years ago), he was on TV for one of his trials and she said “who’s that lady?” I had to explain he was a guy. Or is a guy. Or was a guy. Oh, who knows? He was wearing a lady’s light purple pantsuit and had a flip-do wig on.

One thing I do really think: he has Body Dysmorphic Disorder and unfortunately he’s had the money to change his face and body as much as people with BDD all wish they could. (I have it/had it–underwent a lot of counseling for years to deal with it.) It’s a pretty serious thing.

  9. Dee says:

Poor guy, we really don’t need any more losses in Hollywood this year. It’s been quite a horrible year actually.

@ MsTriste; apparently, he’s an Islamic now? I’m not sure what their stance is on medical treatments etc.

I hope he pulls through, if not for himself, but for his kids — no matter how tarnished his reputation is, he is still a parent, and it would be a horrible impact on his children if he passed away.

  10. jennifurrr says:

i have vitiligo too, it’s the skin disorder he has and you’re skin really can get that white even if you’re black. it comes in as white freckles that become patches that then become giant areas of skin that is no longer pigmented… it’s different for everyone but you can get bleached if a large enough portion is already de-pigmented or you can go through photo-therapy if a small portion is de-pigmented (which is basically getting painted and dyed skin tone colors)

i heard the reason why he wore one glove was b/c when he was younger only one hand had vitiligo…

  11. Jacqueline says:

anyone who hates their appearance as much as Michael has for most of his adult life is to be pitied; I just think it’s such a dreadful shame. He’s so talented- we all loved him when he was just himself as nature intended. Such a waste.
There must be someone he knows and trusts who could truly help him psychologically. And, of course, I so hope he can get help with this terrible illness.

  12. xiaoecho says:

    Thanx southernlady 🙂

anastasiabea…..I am right there with you! I never bothered taking notice of his hands but they look out and out strange. Not only the colour but they look deformed – at least the left one. The palms are also darker than the tops.

BDD would explain his reluctance to go out in public but what about the weird hijab and high heels thing or the time he dressed as a woman in a long wig and big floppy hat and high heels – is it that he’s so drug addled that he has no concept of how he comes across?
Another weird thing is no-one spills the beans and gives us any idea of his motivations —how does he manage such loyalty when everyone else gets routinely sold down the river by their handlers 😕

    Weird!!

  13. Shane says:

Michael Jackson is a pedophile scumbag. Period.

So the question that remains is, who will get the kids when he dies?!?!?!

They deserve to finally know their real parents!!

Or, have a loving set of parents (completely un-related to anyone with the last name “Jackson”).

An added touch would be if they could be raised by adoptive parents of the same race as they are, CAUCASIAN.

Does anyone know who the biological father of the first 2 kids is?

How about the biological mother and father of the 3rd kid?

God forbid the Jackson clan raise those kids, particularly Michael’s father, who molested his own female children and beat his boys.

And even worse, I pray Michael doesn’t kick the bucket in a Muslim country, since he’s Muslim now, and those kids get stranded there.

God I pray he dies in the USA with the kids here.

  14. QUEENOFUNIVERSE says:

    You reap what you sow.
His past is coming back to haunt him.
He will always be a King of POP, he is the master. I pray for his soul and the children he has molested. Mike has been a sicko for a long time. Neither the less I have enjoyed every note he has touched.

  15. voodoobetty says:

    Aint karma a bitch mikey?

  16. Ophelia says:

I guess I’m not totally alone in thinking I don’t care. He’s more than likely a pedophile, and I couldn’t care less about one. But it is kind of shocking to hear all this. And I admittedly still love Billie Jean.

  17. RaraAvis says:

    What a waste of talent.

  18. Kelly says:

jennifurrr my mom has vitaligo too thats so what he has. The hair is relaxed with Karitin (fermaldihide) and he is way before his time.

  19. Kelly says:

and by that i mean we will look more like him in like 10 years.

  20. Trashaddict says:

If he’s got such bad lung disease, why isn’t he using oxygen? Is he really so vain that he won’t wear it out in public? Eye disease associated with alpha-1 antitrypsin is not commenly mentioned, I googled it. So if any one knows of anything specific, please post.
I’m wondering how much lung (and maybe eye) damage he sustained when he was burned.

  21. Cheyenne says:

Vitiligo is a skin disease that causes whole patches of skin to become depigmented. It’s a slow process that usually takes years. But in Jackson’s case it happened in a matter of months. Just compare the album covers of “Thriller” and “Bad”. No case of depigmentation from vitiligo happens that quickly and that thoroughly. He had to have some chemical treatment done to his skin to make it go pale all over at the same time like that.

  22. Bina says:

I believe you can get a treatment in injection form that kills all the melanin in your body if you suffer from vitiligo. I know someone who had that done and they too look paler than pale.

As for him dying in a Muslim country, Shane, that’s quite an offensive thing to say. I’m Muslim and from what I can see of Michael’s last several years living in Bahrain, both he and his children have been treated very well.

  23. JaneSays says:

Poor Shane. I pity you for your overt and unnecessarily shared ignorance. I feel more sadness for you than Michael.

  24. Emily says:

When did Jackson’s skin pigmentation start to change? And has it been confirmed he has vitiligo or is that just speculation?

  25. james says:

omfg, this article is saying he might die and you people are still banging on about his skin, that is so tragic.

  26. vdantev says:

    Damn shame 🙁

  27. mojoman says:

“An added touch would be if they could be raised by adoptive parents of the same race as they are, CAUCASIAN”
@shane, hope you dont really mean it that way, does it matter if the children are being adopted by loving, responsible black/asian/latino parents?

  28. yadira says:

Awww poor guy, hope he gets better. Some people really need to let go of their vendettas against people they dont even know or know if they did it or not. What the hell ever happened to human kindness? Did people lose it while in their enrage over a Brangelina article? 🙄

  29. GrnMtGirl says:

First, I would like to say: I have always been completely freaked out by Michael’s hands. Sometimes they are all I can see when I look at him. The are freakishly over-sized, bony, and monstrous looking. I Can Not Imagine being touched by them. Ewwwww……

I recently watched a news show about a tv anchorman that had a profound case of vitiligo and he was able to apply make-up in such a way that nobody could tell. I was extremely impressed. This disease can be hidden and treated in a myriad of ways that help hide it. Michael certainly had enough money to be able to do so.

I do feel a bit sorry for the man; however, he made his bed…He is a grown man and it is about time he got over his childhood, like the rest of us, and take responsibility. One has to wonder how many of his current unfortunate problems he created himself.

I grew up watching Michael and I find it very sad to have seen him deteriorate in the way that he has. Yet, at the same time, I am a big believer in behaving like an adult and Karma. If/when he passes it will be a huge; much like Elvis. And, there will most likely be a storm of controversy and speculation which will take place. But, if you ask me – I’d prefer a much simpler and dignified ending such as we saw with Paul Newman. Now that man was someone who you could look up to.

  30. Anne says:

Jackson bleaches his skin, it’s not patchy at all. Wouldn’t it have taken time to go so white? I’m guessing his genetic illnesses don’t exist. If they did, wouldn’t at least one of his siblings also be somewhat ill?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he uses something very toxic to bleach his skin like mercury. Mercury poisoning can cause organ failure, I bet his liver has given out. The new disease will explain why he needs an organ transplant if he hasn’t already had one over seas.

Maybe he caught wind of someone planning to expose his transplant or he’s using his illness (self inflicted) to garner sympathy.

  31. Eileen Yover says:

He just makes me so sad when I see pictures of him. What a talented artist that went totally off the deep end. But I think he might have been abused as a child-probably mentally, phically, and emotionally. I’m no therpaist, but he just seems a classic case of getting too much too young along with a case of abuse.
I miss the old Michael Jackson-I did a talent show to Billy Jean. I can’t even put this guy together with who he was 25 years ago-not even the same man.

  32. Shane says:

    Response:

    1) I believe children, particularly adoptive children, should whenever possible be raised by caretakers of a similar race.

I think this builds confidence IN THE CHILD, IN WHO THEY ARE AS A PERSON.

That’s all. I realize placement with same race parents is not always an option in the adoption community.

    2) I would hate for the kids to get stuck in a Muslim country where they are not allowed to leave, particularly the girl. THIS HAS HAPPENED IN MANY INSTANCES ALREADY IN MUSLIM COUNTRIES. Females don’t have equal rights, if any rights.

So no need for anyone of Muslim heritage to be personally offended by that commennt. Particularly since it’s the truth, and not aimed at you directly, but instead at the (unequal and unfair) laws of many Muslim countries.

  33. Amy says:

@Shane — Children should be raised in a house where they will be loved and provided for. That is all that matters.

As for his skin, I actually buy the vitiligo story.

  34. FMcNicholl says:

    #3 RReddy

It turns out Elvis Presley was an Alpha1 as well and they only discovered it when they did the post mortem. Don’t believe then read this article

    http://www.geocities.com/elvispresleyresearch/panniculitis.html

  35. frewt says:

With resptect to genuine sufferers, he does NOT have vitiligo. That’s a convenvient excuse he’s used for years to cover his deliberate skin bleaching. Jesus, the man wants to erase his ethnicity and become white – look at plastic surgery he’s had, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise that the the skin bleaching is all part of his bizarre grand plan. Add to all that, the fact that his children are caucasion!

  36. IceBunny says:

just chiming in on the freakish hand and skin thing here… despite his illness(es) which I feel sorry for him for.. even as a pedophile, it is sad what has happened to him and the incredible waste of talent as many have said… I mean, my Lord, his DANCING just changed dance forever! anyway… back to the hands/skin… you cannot bleach the skin underneath your fingernails… and if you look closely, the skin color under his nails is considerably darker than the skin on his hands. I think that adds a strong vote to the bleach side of the argument.

  37. elisa says:

I don’t know anything about the disease. However, my mom needs a lung transplant (not a smoker, they don’t know why her lungs are so bad, she didn’t get really sick beforehand or anything either). It’s been a couple of years, and she’s still doing the pre-testing, she’s not even on the list yet. so, I will be VERY pissed if Michael gets a lung transplant (assuming he needs one) before she does, just because he’s a celebrity. That doesn’t make him more valuable as a human being than my mom.

*I know this might not be true at all, but I just needed to say that

  38. 88modesty88 says:

Elisa, I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. The world is really unfair sometimes…
And I agree with you, it would be a travesty if MJ got a transplant before your mom — if he did not have to follow the same steps to get on the all-important list.

    **************

I’ve never been a big fan of Michael Jackson — got to see him (obviously from a distance) in Namibia when he was there on a visit. Don’t think he performed.
I can’t judge, and as soon as I start feeling sorry for MJ through reading sympathetic responses, someone like IceBunny comes along and makes a very good point: vitiligo would make the skin under his nails also turn white.

That said, it’s a damn shame. I love “The way you make me feel” and “Dirty Diana”.

  39. Anne says:

Elisa, I’m sorry your mom is ill. The sad thing is Jackson could go to Dubai or somewhere else to buy a new lung (I realize the donor would be dead) or liver.

  40. Codzilla says:

I’ll always love the Jackson Five. Always!

  41. Aspen says:

Honestly…he’s been allowed to get away with raping little boys for decades. I don’t care if he dies, and I think it might actually be a good thing if he does. People who commit sexual crimes against children forfeit any claim on my compassion.

  42. Lila says:

Y’all: beware wikipedia. Not terribly credible. 😯

  43. chessie says:

    *yawn*

  44. MochaNthaMiddle says:

Here’s a Blind Item…….tell me who does it sound like?

“He was on track to become one of the richest black celebrities in the world and then everything came to a halt!

Instead, he became a “functional” discreet boozer and pill dropper. He reeked horrible damage on his body. Including: Liver and kidney damage unbeknownst to the public.

Now, we’re receiving word that he arrives at one of these (private-celebrity) unlisted clinics (black sites) weekly to receive kidney dialysis. The public is not even aware that he’s on kidney dialysis, let alone that he is a functional alcoholic and pill addict.

His million dollar fixer has done a great job of covering up all of these allegations.

Our star is so physically weakened and damaged (from his substance abuse) that he’s currently not capable of getting through a hour or two hour performance.

Allegedly, this is the real reason why he hasn’t performed in a few years and this is also the reason why he’s not courting any big time offers to hit the stage again, anytime soon.”

Now tell me what do you all think?????

  45. Anne says:

MochaNthaMiddle, oh ya, that sounds like Jackson all right.

  46. Candy says:

nonono, wait, hold up; wasn’t he inhaling oxygen left and right two decades ago? hmm sorry but this story sounds fishy. Bring the fries.

  47. Bill says:

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (A1AD) is a genetic disease that can affect the liver (cirrhosis), lungs (emphysema), and skin (panniculitis). Being as it’s genetic, his siblings would also need to be tested, as well as his children’s mother. We don’t have a cure and treatment is through augmentation therapy which helps to slow down the progression, but can’t stop it. Transplants are sometimes an option but again, you must meet strict criteria to get on the waiting list. I am an Alpha, lung identified at age 36 and given 5 years to live. That was in 1986. I went on the transplant waiting list in 97 and received a single right lung in 2000. My parents were carriers, Dad was 59 when he died from liver complications and my Mother died from the lung side. My older sister passed away at age 56 from the lung issues and I have another sister who is also a ZZ Alpha. For the sake of MJ’s kids I hope they’ve been spared. You can find more alpha-1 info at http://www.alpha2alpha.net Stay well.

i think hes not too ill.probably hell get better soon,(hope so) he is my idol.

  50. kitty says:

    our prayers are wit you

  51. koshka says:

I’m a doctor and just wanted to mention that there is actually a link between vitiligo and A1AD. also as for skin under the nails-very common in pts with renal failure needing dialysis to have brown gammy looking nails in response to the above speculation. a1ad kept at bay by plasma derived replacement alpha-1 antitrypsin infusions but ultimately the organs get so screwed that transplant is sometimes the only option. that’s all

  52. debi says:

hold on to your hats, i am going to say something that will offend some people. i think michael ran afoul of some big power jewish entertainment people and he got set up on the pedophile charges because he was too stupid or just plain too niave to think anyone would even believe he could do something like that. i think the fact that he turned to black muslims to protect him america before, during and after the trial. and then fleeing to a muslim country makes this idea reasonable. i am sorry for his illness. i think he did something to his liver while changing his skin color. bleaching can damage your liver like crazy. also wondering what jackson members have had the disease? does janet have it? she cancelled her concerts recently because she was ill.

  53. debi says:

lyricfreak – i believe he has vitiligo too. and i have family members that have it. but the reason i think he bleached his skin was to even out his skin color. vitiligo is patchy on everyone i have seen with my own eyes. meaning that it just doesn’t make a person white (my family is black). it’s patch work like a quilt. there are white patches next to black patches. did i explain this well enough?

  54. dee says:

health does not care about race color sex or money I feel sorry for him.however if he needs a lung i got one to donate per say

  55. Alyssa says:

I really hope he gets a lung transplant[if he truly needs it.]I also hope he will be fine in the future and like dee said I feel sorry for him[also.]Wouldn’t it be totally horrible if he were to die in the near future!?

  56. hope he gets better.
