Hey Girl, Ryan Gosling pretty much made a hyper-violent Steven Seagal movie

Dear God. This ^^ is the new (and first?) poster for Ryan Gosling’s film Only God Forgives. So, um, obviously this is the kind of film where Ryan is not playing “pretty”. He is not going to make his Hey Girls swoon and sigh with his physical perfection and his “aw shucks” humanity. He is going to get his ass kicked, and kick some ass. I feel like this is probably a full-on “boy movie” – Gosling reunited with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn for the film that seems like a really strange story. I just read a summary of it at The Mail (summary below) and I can’t believe that I never paid attention to what this weird film is actually about. Gosling plays a character who goes to Bangkok to fight the Thai policeman who killed his brother? Is that really the plot?

His chiselled good looks and buff physique have earned him an army of fans across the globe. But a disturbing new teaser poster from Ryan Gosling’s upcoming movie, Only God Forgives, will no doubt have women the world over more than a little concerned that the handsome chap they know and love has gone forever.

With his face transformed into a beaten and bloodied mess, the 32-year-old actor is virtually unrecognisable thanks to his swollen and distorted features. However, fans – and Ryan’s girlfriend Eva Mendes – are likely to be thrilled that the Hollywood hunk’s terrifying-looking injuries were merely in the name of his art.

In Only God Forgives, the star portrays ex-boxer-turned-gangster Julian, who fights a Bangkok police lieutenant to avenge the death of his brother.

Kristin Scott Thomas plays the mobster’s mother Jenna, who forces him to find and kill the person responsible for his sibling’s death. Ryan is said to have undergone strenuous Muay Thai boxing training for the role, with make-up giving him a helping hand with what appeared to be a prosthetic swollen nose. The actor stars alongside Kristin Scott Thomas in the crime thriller, which was shot on location in Thailand.

Ryan has previously admitted the upcoming movie is ‘the strangest thing I’ve ever read and it’s only going to get stranger.’

Written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn – who worked with Ryan on Drive – the film is scheduled for relase in March 2013. In addition to Only God Forgives, the actor also has Gangster Squad set to hit the big screen early next year.

[From The Mail]

My dad used to watch movies with those kinds of plot lines. And you know what? They were inevitably Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme movies. I’m just saying… I have a lot of faith in Refn, but this doesn’t seem like the kind of movie that women are going to run to see. Oh… I just saw something else about the plot: Gosling’s character “runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.” Yeah. This is a Steven Seagal movie, only fancy and artsy.

Incidentally, LaineyGossip said yesterday that there were rumors that Gosling and Eva Mendes were on a break or something, but Lainey says it’s BS, and they’re still together.

I think I’ll pass on this movie; it sounds like a bad remake of Baretta. Such a shame to disfigure such a handsome face, role or no role…but if it adds to the movie, it’s all in the name of “art”

  2. Blue says:

I have a weak stomach so I can’t with all the fighting, I’m sure lots of guys will go see it though.

  3. Apples says:

He does absolutely nothing for me.
But, I am always amused by him and the way he panders to his fangirls.

  4. Incredulous says:

The press around movies like this one always sets my teeth on edge. Mostly because it always seems to consist of an actor being asked about the fighty stuff and then they spew absolute codswallop – Tom Hardy as Bane, I am looking directly at you here.

Well, that or the astonishing idiocy that was Red Belt. I never managed to make it through that movie mostly because Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character was like a parody of a bad instructor.

After typing all that, I realise I may be on my own with this stuff. Sorry, popular fighty movies lead to a direct increase in me having to hear lots of people who don’t know what they are talking about spew bilge about fighty stuff and, if you say anything, they tend to get aggressive. Then I am magically the asshole if I refute what they are saying while trying to defuse any violence.

I loved Bronson and Drive, so I have faith that I will like this film too. I like the KST is acting more.

  6. Nya says:

A moive about a family of white criminals in Thailand where all the Asians are out to get them and the bad guy is named Chang? Yeah no thanks.

  7. gobo says:

Meh, nearly all Nicolas Winding Refn’s movies are ultra violent. Not all are good. Valhalla rising? Good god if I could get that time back. Bronson, however, was great.

  8. normades says:

I’m sure it will be “arty” violent.

  9. marie says:

am I the only one who doesn’t know wth a “hey girl” is? fans I guess? I like his acting but he really does nothing for me..

  10. TheOriginalKitten says:

CANNOT wait! Refn is brilliant. This is one I will be seeing in the theater.

  11. elay says:

His IT factor is not about his “pretty face”

… it is about charisma and talent.

  12. Mira says:

Will definitely see this one just for Refn and Drive.

  13. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Why would I pay to watch his beautiful face get beaten and his a$$ handed to him?..and there’s not even a love scene? wtf? Yeah no thanks on this one.

  14. kate says:

Honestly, the stills and poster look like he got beat up after a Dead Man Bones concert.

  15. kate says:

It will most definitely be gory fighting. Bronson and Drive show that Refn loves gore. I think he put it once that gore is “fetish” for him

  16. Ari says:

I love Seagal and anything with action in it so if its even remotely mind-numbing like his movies and PWP I will be seeing it LOL

  17. violette says:

I can’t stand violence, so I will pass on this one.

  18. Bilinga Vaissiere says:

This is a must see for me. I love Ryan Gosling, huge fan of Refn, and find MMA or cage fighting the ultimate sport. Ryan can play any role, one of the best actors of this generation. Oh, yeah, and I am a female…

  19. kityafey says:

I will see it. I love boy movies. I loved Drive. I never really seen the appeal of Ryan until I saw Drive. I guess he reminded me of my husband in that movie. My husband is quiet like that. My husband kind of looks like him too.
