Nicole Kidman’s Australian neighbors hate her (and her yacht)

So imagine you have appointed yourself the queen of Australia. You’re one of Australia’s most famous exports, you get married in an exclusive Australian ceremony that’s the closest thing to a royal wedding. And you’ve married a fellow famous Aussie, and then proceed to “give birth” to a lovely Sunday Roast, who will be raised as the Princess Royal of Australia. You are beloved. You are botoxed. No one questions you. Except for your neighbors.

This is the exact predicament of Nicole Kidman. Apparently, she sold her “exclusive” and “prestigious” property on the Sydney harbor, yet has failed to move her enormous yacht. Her neighbors are *royally* pissed.

It is one of Sydney’s most prestigious apartment buildings, right on the harbour and home to a clutch of local celebrities, including, until recently, Nicole Kidman. Problem is, when the Hollywood star sold up, she left her A$4.5m (£2.1m) yacht behind – and her former neighbours are furious about it.

Strict bylaws regulate life at Pier 6/7 in Walsh Bay, a rejuvenated former wharf area containing some of the city’s most expensive homes. The rules specify, among other things, where washing may be hung, and whether gulls may be fed. One apartment owner recently fell foul of the block’s governing committee for installing pot plants on his balcony. The bylaws also state that only residents can park their yachts in the adjacent marina. So why is Kidman’s large boat, Hokulani, still moored there, nearly a year after she moved out? Favouritism, mutter disgruntled locals, who accuse the committee of turning a blind eye to its presence.

Sydney-born Kidman has long been the city’s favourite daughter but her reputation has taken a battering in recent weeks. Her latest film, Australia, in which she plays an English aristocrat who inherits an outback cattle ranch, has been panned around the world. Last week, she was condemned by Aboriginal leaders for playing the didgeridoo – an instrument generally considered to be reserved for men – on a German chat show. Now comes the Melrose Place-style drama on her home turf.

The star, who still owns a waterside mansion in Sydney’s affluent eastern suburbs, is apparently well aware that Hokulani is breaching regulations. A spokesman for Kidman told the Sydney Morning Herald that the boat had been left at the marina because she had contemplated buying another apartment in the same block, which did not happen.

The spokesman claimed the boat would be moved next week, and denied that Kidman was “trying to take advantage of the situation”. “The [governing committee] would never do anything just because it’s her,” he said.

[From Independent.co.uk]

The article goes on to talk about how every Australian is disappointed with Kidman because of the failure of Australia. To add insult to injury, Kidman has stated that she’s not going to spend Christmas in Australia, or on her yacht. Instead, she will be playing housewife to Keith Urban in Nashville.

Seriously, I find it hard to feel sympathy for anyone with “yacht problems”. I realize Kidman has more money than God, so perhaps she could just throw some cash around, make this issue go away? Or is this a bigger issue? Is Australia denying it’s self-appointed queen? I certainly hope so.

Nicole Kidman is shown on 12/10/08 at the UK premiere of Australia. Credit: WENN

I loved the movie Australia, perhaps especially bec I was prepared, by the reviews, not to. I think people who haven’t seen it are panning it.

  2. gee_gee says:

Wow. I did not know the woman was so hated. So, she has made some bad movies. She botoxes her face. And she has not moved her yacht. At this point I would not be surprised if a posse of her neighbors skewers her to death with a didgeridoo. No wonder she doesn’t want to spend Christmas there.

  3. RReedy says:

Much ado about nothing: so she has a big boat? So what? Guess parking on the water in Sydney Harbor is a problem….kind of like a Target parking lot for the rest of us. She may not be the brightest bulb in the actress category, but she’s OK in my book. Just trying to live her life like all of us. Have a great day! Looking forward to more celebitchy in 09!

  4. drm says:

Kaiser did someone pee in your Weetbix this morning? That post was incredibly nasty and says more about you than it does Ms Kidman. You know I wasn’t going to go see Australia but now I am, in part because no movie can possibly be bad enough to inspire such vitriol against one person.

Interestingly, on the review site Rotten Tomatoes Australia gets a 53% rotten tomato rating and a 47% ‘nice’ tomato rating from critics. Viewers on the other hand are much more positive as Lila pointed out with 75% of the ratings being positive.

Settle petal…your comments were a tad OTT.

  5. Bodhi says:

I didn’t find this article ragey at all. It certainly no worse than all the vitriol everyone spews on a daily basis

  6. EP says:

I also do not understand the hate towards Nicole. She is fabulousness personified, she chooses interesting movie roles and can act & she doesn’t come off as incredibly snotty. Australia is an entertaining film. I think the news of her “demise” is greatly exaggerated. I love her and I’m probably her demographic. Not to worry, Nicole.

  7. kiki says:

well, you can’t make everybody happy. Hey Nicole, i’ll move into you yacht so you don’t have to move it!!! It’s freezing cold here in Canada, snow everywhere!!! aagggh

  8. Holly says:

YOu don’t understand why people hate Nicole Kidman? Puhleeze. All this woman does is bold faced lie to the public. Nooo she hasn’t had Botox. Oooh of course she had sex with Tom Cruise, m’hm. Whatever. I’m never going to be a fan of fake-ass beards.

  9. daisy424 says:

@Holly, why is Botox a reason to hate someone?
I’m sure she doesn’t give a shit what you think of her.

  10. Rosy says:

I don’t think she should be ragged on for not spending Christmas in Australia, that is her business the country doesn’t own her. However, she is a bit of a phony when it comes to certain things.

As for the movie, my sister said it was terrible. She usually loves these epic films so it must have been pretty bad for her not to have liked it.

  11. Holly says:

    @Daisy

Did I say I hated her because she’s uses Botox? Its one thing to use it, its quite another to lie to everyone as if they’re stupid. Either say no comment or ‘fess up, but don’t lie to me. Its the insult to my own intelligence that irritates me.

  12. paris herpes says:

Baz Luhrman is a bad director, it’s not because of Nicole Kidman really, she is a decent actress IMO. That’s pretty much why Australia tanked.

  13. Kaiser says:

I don’t get it either, Bodhi. Are these people confused? Do they think I wrote the Independent article?

I didn’t even get into why I really dislike her.

  14. as if says:

Nicole Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

  15. ll says:

@Kaiser, you didn’t write the independent article but the part about self-appointed queen of australia seems to be your writing. And it’s nothing I’ve ever heard Kidman say, it’s all your rage-y whatever. This was a pretty tiresome and boring article to read in general, since the main point was “i, kaiser, hate nicole kidman. and this article, real or no, validates that! yay! hate!”

  16. Kaiser says:

@ll – I was just trying to be funny. Sorry if it offended. For the record, her wedding was staged like a royal wedding, though. But we all see what we want to see.

  17. LOTN says:

Nicole Kidman was born in Hawaii which makes her American by birth. She was, however, raised in Australia.

Keith Urban was born in New Zealand.

  18. elle em says:

I don’t understand why this site always trashes Nicole Kidman. So what if she uses Botox? It’s her business. She won an Oscar & numerous other awards so that says something about her acting abilities. People always bitch because they are less fortunate than others. But to attack a woman just because she is rich, beautiful & talented is totally uncalled for.

  19. Tennessee says:

I think Nicole is a great actress and she is a beautiful woman. I also think she uses the “tox”. Big deal. Some people are born fortunate and some are not, and why should we judge them for that. Life is good for us all, because we are alive. Sure I too, would love to have more but, I have had less than I have now. I think that when she says that she hasn’t had any of the “tox” that she isn’t telling the truth, but we can see by looking at her parents that she looks like her dad and if she looked like her mum well, she would need the “tox”, I think she “takes after her dad” and so she may age gracefully, and she IS VERY MUCH a beautiful woman you can’t deny that..I wish I looked like her “tox” or no “tox”…

  20. dantev says:

It’s says Celebitchy above the door, not Celenicey. Please make a note of it.

  21. swampass says:

Freedom of speech, folks. If you don’t like the Nicole articles, skim past them. This site is nowhere NEAR as bitchy toward NK as some others I could mention. I personally agree with Kaiser 100%. I’m of the demographic that is tired of Nicole and wouldn’t mind her fading into the night. Flame on.

  22. Rosebudd says:

Nicole is a bit (LOL) STIFFY but quite beautiful. Too bad she didn’t just embrace her beautiful naturally red hair. She looks much better w/ it. That blonde? really washes her out. She rose above Tommy boy, carved out her OWN acting career & is still bound by her ties to Scientology. She cannot speak out because they have ammunition on her. I’m happy for her that she has her gorgous Sunday Rose.

  23. PJ says:

The article is incorrect. “Australia” is not a failure, it’s been in the top 10 movies in the US since it came out.

Generally the critics have blamed the movie’s flaws on the director, Baz Luhrman, not its stars. One article even said that the stars’ Oscar chances have diminished because the movie wasn’t as good as expected.

  24. Mandy says:

I haven’t seen “Australia,” but I assume it’s crap since it’s Baz Luhrman. Personally, I like Nicole Kidman. I think she’s a great actress, which is why I hate to see her waste her talent on such films.

BTW, anyone remember a while back, when she said that her adopted kids with Tom Cruise address her as “Nicole” instead of “Mom?” I’m glad she got the hell out of Scientology, but look at the price she had to pay: now Tom hardly ever lets her see her own children!

  25. paris herpes says:

PJ I’ve read plenty of reviews and they’ve panned Australia pretty much all across the board. Sure there are few critics that liked it. But they probably like all of Luhrman’s movies.

  26. meow mix says:

    @ Kaiser

    It made me laugh.

I think Nicole Kidman is probably harmless enough but it was still a funny article.

I get it now…you were being funny!

Everyone needs to chill the f**k down.

  27. Kylie says:

I am so sick of the Nicole bashing. Get a life. I dont even bother reading the articles anymore. Its so pathetic. Your just following Perez Hilton. baaaa baaaaa And again… you use a stupid picture! yawn
and now I read the article.
I am an Aussie and everyone over here LOVED the movie.
The only negatives are coming from Yanks that probably dont get the movie as it is so Australian.
Your article is unjust and unworthy.
Your just so jealous. You poor poor thing.

  28. PJ says:

The critics were pretty lukewarm about the movie but they generally panned the director, not the actors.

A lot of movies the critics hate wind up as No. 1 at the box office.

  29. vdantev says:

The only negatives are coming from Yanks that probably dont get the movie as it is so Australian.

So I guess Paul Hogan is due for major theatre comeback any day now then ? I’m always fascinated when people believe that their chunk of real estate in the world is so surrounded by this impenetrable wall of mystery that no one outside its borders can comprehend it- when its been proven time and time again that people everywhere are fundamentally the same, unless you’re talking about the distant past. If a movie about San Quentin got the approval of the general populace behind its walls, it wouldn’t automatically make it a good film.

  30. MT says:

I find it hard to feel sorry for wealthy “neighbors”.

Seriously, they must be very rich to live in such a complex and the surrounding area.

So one really rich person, is angry with Nicole. Who cares?

As for Australia- the movie is terrible, and yes, Nicole wasn’t so good in it, but the main problem was the boring story, the annoying kid they casted and who couldn’t act (and there are children who CAN ACT!), and the awful direction.

So the script-writer and director should be the firt to blame.

  31. Jessica says:

UMMM … ARE YOU FKN SERIOUS?? !!!

She is not the queen of australia! She is nowhere near that title. Australians do not consider her anywhere near that status, and I really doubt that she would either!

So she left her yacht somewhere she used 2 live, boo hoo!! Have a cry about it.

  32. yadira says:

Kylie, A little fanatical are we? Nicole stinks. That fact cannot be argued.

  33. Mark says:

I saw the movie Australia, expecting to cringe and hate it. I was pleasantly surprised. It was good. Not the greatest movie I’ve ever seen, but good nonetheless.

I do think there were a lot of cultural references (eg the Japanese bombing of Darwin, the stolen generations) that were new, content-wise, for US audiences. I’m an expat in the US, and have talked to other expats who loved it.

  34. Granger says:

I think Nicole is a wonderful actress. She strikes me as very dramatic, but then, most actors are.

But I don’t mind if anyone else hates her. This is a site devoted to criticizing (to use a nice word) celebrities! If you get offended when somebody says they don’t like your favourite actor, you shouldn’t be here. You don’t know the actor OR the criticizer personally, so why should it bother you? Roll your eyes, have a laugh, and move on.

  35. REM says:

i take it the blogger (KAISER) is a woman, not surprised, we’r known to vent the anger of our own miserable, non-acheiving lives on the few women that better off than us… it’s called the “WOMAN GENETICS” but truth is sweetheart our hate and attack won’t stop them cos they don’t even know we exist let alone our worthless opinions. Like u said KAISER “I didn’t even get into why I really dislike her”, honey u’ll never find a reason cos it’s “YOU” dat u do not like not “HER”

  36. REM says:

if u say her wedding was staged, i wonder what u have to say about TAMMY GIRL

  37. anon says:

Spilling ur VENOM at every giving opportunity is beyond pathetic, so what one or two neighbours complain (minor complain surely) but u had to make a fuss by saying “THEY HATE HER” grow up u sound PATHETIC

  38. morgs says:

No Kaiser, we aren’t confused as to who wrote the Independent article. The first line of your blog as the “self appointed queen of Australia” didn’t come from the article. That article wasn’t nearly as nasty as your comments.
@Holly: do you hate everyone in Hollywood who says they don’t use the ‘tox even if they do? What they do to their face is their own gd business and it is hilarious that people get so pissed when they don’t announce to the public what procedures they’ve had done.

  39. Allabout eve says:

At least Tom cannot be blamed for this.

  40. Jessie says:

If I had botox I wouldn’t want people knowing. Doesn’t that defy the point of getting it in the first place? (Eg to HIDE wrinkles)

  41. Trillion says:

    She botoxed her yacht.

  42. Kink says:

Geez, harsh much??? I’m guessing this is a sarcastic attempt at being funny, but it comes off very hateful instead.
I really don’t get why people hate her so much, and why Austrailians are so hateful to their hometown stars…Heath had the same problem. Are they really like that or do just the few who run their mouths get all the press?
Wish all I had to complain about was someone else’s boat blocking my view…what a bunch of crybabies.

  43. randy says:

I saw Australia the other day and loved it! 2 friends I went with also had positive things to say about it. The theatre we saw it in people actually clapped at the end. I went expecting not to like it as i read what the critics said so I was pleasantly surprised by it. If you like Baz’s films you should like Australia too. And Hugh Jackman is a sexy, sexy Drover!!

  44. Steve says:

    Typical tall poppy syndrome.

Small jealous people knocking the successful ones!

  45. CB Rawks says:

Um moron, she’s illegally dumping an abandoned yacht.
What does her career have to do with anything?

  47. Jill says:

Correct! I think this people are so jealous to Nicole’s fortune and fame. If that will make her happy why not. Anyway she is not asking a single penny from her neighbor to support her luxurious lifestyle. Thanks for posting.

  48. Well! I want to know that why these people are jealous to Nicole’s fortune and fame.

  49. Swiss says:

Yeah, I see jalousy there, too. Those people should start living their own lifes.

  50. Char says:

    @Holly.

How are you so affended that she lied about botox? She isn’t your friend is she? It’s not like you two know eachother or she came up to your face directly and lied point blank. You have no reason to be so annoyed about her lieing. And people lie everyday and worse lies than the use of botox.. So get things into perspecitve and sort yourself out because it isnt important at all.

  51. Stuar says:

So tight. so tight. We don’t need your sympathy, we need your money. At least 1M$. You are pathetic
