Cate Blanchett’s husband said he’d divorce her if she had plastic surgery

Cate Blanchett is one of the many Hollywood actresses who claims to shun cosmetic surgery. But unlike many of the others, Cate definitely hasn’t had any. She says that her husband would divorce her if she did. Cate has a really beautiful way of viewing the body as it ages, and talks about the history that’s shown through the changes. There is a real depth and passion to what she says, and she makes some great arguments about loving what you’re given.

Cate Blanchett tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Leslie Bennetts that in terms of plastic surgery, “I haven’t done anything, but who knows. Andrew said he’d divorce me if I did anything. When you’ve had children, your body changes; there’s history to it. I like the evolution of that history; I’m fortunate to be with somebody who likes the evolution of that history. I think it’s important to not eradicate it. I look at someone’s face and I see the work before I see the person…. You’re certainly not staving off the inevitable. And if you’re doing it out of fear, that fear’s still going to be seen through your eyes. The windows to your soul, they say.”

“I’m not a spokesperson against the world of injectables,” Blanchett tells Bennetts. “If you grow up in an environment where your mother gets you a boob job when you turn 18, what hope is there? But I didn’t grow up in that world. The reason I went to train as an actor was that I was interested in it for the long haul. You can become very self-obsessed, but you’ve got to keep looking outward.”

I’ve always had this thing about preferring vintage and antiques to modern, mass produced stuff. My reasoning was that I liked that my things had a history to them. It had never occurred to me to perhaps view myself in the same way, but that’s exactly what Cate’s talking about. I think there’s a simple beauty to that. It’s not just about acceptance, it’s about appreciating the way parts of your story are told by the changes in your body.

Cate’s previously mentioned that she thinks people get plastic surgery out of “self obsession” and “fear,” noting “‘Look at a man or a woman in their 50s and all I see when they have brushed their years away with surgery is self-obsession and fear. That’s not particularly attractive.’” Of course when you have a face like Cate’s, it is probably a little easier to be accepting.

I understand why people want to look better as they age, and I think it’s hard for many of us not to keep track of the changes in our face as they appear. I’m not sure that I’d go so far as to say it’s self obsession, but I think it can show a lack of acceptance. But give me ten years and I might be singing a different tune.

She’s hot. You could fall into her eyes forever. He’s a lucky mofo. Elizabeth was her best film (after playing Giladriel in LOTR of course)

Wow, I really like what she had to say. Many stars that do get plastic surgery just end up looking worse, or stupid (Lisa Rinna – http://www.dhadm.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/lisa-rinna.jpg ).

Cate Blanchett is one of those actors in Hollywood that is truly an *artist* – not just a pretty face or sex object. She’s so incredibly talented. And apparently grounded, too. The more I learn about her, the more I like her.

He just looks like a comfortable old doofus, he’s probably really good to her and the kids, and a great guy all around.

She makes a lot of sense. There is a beauty in aging. Right, we don’t always look 20, but who wouldn’t rather have a lively, intelligent, humorous 35 year old than a vapid, but pretty, 20 year old?

I’d divorce her TOO if she changed a THING on that wonderful face. Or body, or whatever. The woman is perfect – perfectly flawed and human. Not to mention a huge talent.

Gawd, can you tell I’m a fan? *gushing*

    LOL

Some of her comments indicate that she’s waffling. In other words, she’ll cave and get plastic surgery…of course she will Her husband won’t be happy but he isn’t going to divorce her.

I wonder what that means though, any cosmetic procedure or one that actually requires surgery, i.e. an invasive procedure.

Stars split hairs like that, they don’t consider injections and stuff plastic surgery but sounds like she means ANY procedure.

I saw Ben Button on Xmas Day…she is absolutely beautiful in that movie. I’m glad she doesn’t get plastic surgery because she is a stunning looking woman and I think she’ll look even better as she ages.

She looks amazing… husband is a troll. How dare he tell her what to do? He’s right though. She shouldn’t alter that face in any way — Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman are examples of how it rarely works out; they look like plump-lipped wax dolls with jutting cheekbones that could cut glass.

  16. Sickitten says:

Sorry but she never had any beauty to really hold onto so she would never understand how someone with a pretty face would want to hold onto it. She has nothing to lose and that is a reflection on her cavalier attitude regarding cosmetic procedures.

I practically swoon when I look at her in this pic. What an amazingly beautiful woman. (And I’m not gay LOL). Her perspective on plastic surgery is also very thought provoking.

It’s easy for you to say “love what you’re given” when you are absolutely gorgeous, isn’t it? :P

It’s all fine and great that good old superman’s wife is attractive, huh?

I hate when men censor what their girlfriends/wives do to their bodies because it’s “vain” while I’ve yet to meet a man who hasn’t compared his chicka and a random hot piece of ass. I guess women are supposed to feel good about themselves, huh?

  20. barneslr says:

How lovely for her that she is genetically blessed. I guess anyone who isn’t should just suffer along with whatever it is they hate, lest they be considered shallow by her.

One thing I hate is a self important celebrity that passes judgement on the rest of us. Perhaps if we were all natural beauties this wouldn’t be an issue. But for a young lady who has a distractingly large and unattractive nose, for example–don’t change it! Cate Blanchett won’t like it if you make that choice!

How about everyone make their own choices about what’s best for themselves and try to be a bit less judgemental about those who make choices that you wouldn’t? I’ve never had plastic surgery, but I’m not going to look down on someone who wants to have a little tweak to make their looks match the way they feel inside. Nothing wrong with that, as long as one is informed about what they are doing.

  21. nina says:

We see her as gorgeous (and I truly do find her beautiful) partially due to her personality, style and way she carries herself. Has she been one of these looks-obsessed starlets, she would have already done a nosejob, implants, lipo or tuck, something to open up the eyes a bit more and who knows what else. And this is exactly what she is saying. That if one is insecure and obsessed with looks one will always find a slew of cosmetic procedures to further fuel her/his insecurity. This “little something to match what is inside” – is going under the knife to conform to ideals that someone else invented to keep the plastic surgery industry going.

While I applaud her sentiment, it’s an easy one when you are only in your 30′s. I do think she’s rarely talented and will have an amazing career whether or not she sticks to her ideals or not. She’s the real deal, and in each generation there are only a handful of talent that can and do stand the test of time and she’s one of them.
