Ryan Gosling: ‘I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does’

Ryan Gosling just started promoting A Place Beyond the Pines, and I just wanted to discuss this HuffPo interview which I found very interesting. I go back and forth on Gosling – sometimes I find him too cute by half, and I don’t really get hot for “cute”. I get hot for dirty MEN. But Gosling is pretty, and he’s very talented (if he’s given the right material) and I can overlook the Disneyland thing sometimes. Basically, I’m giving him a break… today. Tomorrow, he might be on My List. I actually learned several pieces of new information (new for me) from this HuffPo piece. I heard the rumors that he grew up Mormon, but I didn’t know his divorced parents were “working class Mormons” and that he grew up entirely in Ontario. I also didn’t know his mother homeschooled him! And he calls himself a “mama’s boy” which I already knew without him having to tell me. Here’s more:

He’s taking a break from acting: “I’ve been doing it too much,” he says of acting. “I’ve lost perspective on what I’m doing. I think it’s good for me to take a break and reassess why I’m doing it and how I’m doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does.”

His character in A Place Beyond the Pines: “One thing that kind of handed me the key to the character was that I totally overdid it with the tattoos,” says Gosling, who has a teardrop inked beneath his left eye in the film. “I said to Derek, `I got to lose this face tattoo. It’s the worst. It’s so distracting and it’s going to ruin everything.’ And he said, `Well, I’m sure that’s how people with face tattoos feel. So now you have to pay the consequences of your actions.’ So I had to do the whole film with it and now see it on posters. It gave me a sense of shame that I feel was inherent to the character.”

Character acting versus lead acting: “There’s a lot of pressure to be the lead of a film,” he says. “I have done it. It’s not my favorite way to work.”

On The Notebook: “By virtue of being in a movie like that, it just changes people’s perception of you,” he says. “But it doesn’t make it true.”

His acting method: “I don’t know what I’m doing,” he says. “I haven’t quite figured out what the balance is between being able to be lost in it – or try to, anyway – and then step outside of it.”

Dating costars: “Working with someone is the best way to get to know someone, especially if it’s a creative endeavor,” says Gosling. “When you work creatively with somebody, it’s very telling and you sort of fast-track with everyone.”

He doesn’t want to be a lead actor: “The more opportunities I’m given, the more I learn about how easy it is to (expletive) it up,” he says. “You fight for freedom and then you get it, and then you have enough rope to hang yourself. It’s like trying to exercise some restraint because I do have so much freedom.”

[From HuffPo]

I agree with him that audiences need a break from him, and it makes me think more of him that he’s self-aware (or audience-aware) enough to acknowledge it. I imagine there are a lot of fancy Hollywood types on his payroll trying to convince him to strike while the iron is hot and that he should be working back-to-back. I like an actor who goes away for a year or two and then comes back for some kind of amazing passion project. I’m also surprised that Ryan is talking so openly about how he doesn’t like lead-actor work. Considering he’s one of the few young actors (young = under 40, for dudes) who is consistently offered lead roles, he must really have to LOOK for character work at this point. He must drive his management team crazy.

meh, I’m okay with it. I like him as an actor, but can’t stand to hear him in interviews.

    • bns says:

His fake New York-wannabe Marlon Brando voice is so unattractive.

      • marie says:

thank you, I thought I was the only one.

      • Bijlee says:

ahhh! yes this! omg I never understood the appeal of Gosling till I watched Drive. After that movie I became obsessed with him and his pictures and just thought he was so dark, mysterious, good looking, and even funny after READING his interviews. Then I watched him in another movie with a lot of dialogue and the magic faded FAST.

It’s his voice. When he doesn’t talk (and he barely talks in Drive), I find him dreamy and beautiful, the minute he opens his mouth to speak I just am NOT attracted anymore. The guys a good actor and a good looking guy, I just can’t stand his voice. It ruins him for me. I need to read his interviews, not hear them.

Also there’s one scene in Drive where he kisses Carey Mulligan and OMFGA;SKDJFA;KSDJFA;KA;DFKAJS;DLKFAGHASDHF, I just loved it! No words just a solid pretty hot (IMO) kiss.

  2. Kim says:

He is not cute but nice body in Drive. He is like Channing nice from the, neck down

  3. lucy2 says:

I think it’s wise for people who have a ton of movies come out over a short span to step back a bit. Probably better to not announce it and make it a headline, but whatever.

  4. Lantana says:

He can take a break with me. I’m not tired of seeing him!

    • eileen says:

I agree! He is yummy! Definitely on my Top 5:

      RDJ
      Gabriel Aubry
      RG
      Skars
      Luke Bryan (YUMMMMO)

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

That’s a great list, Eileen-I very much approve!

        But who is Luke Bryan?

      • Obvious says:

        @theOriginalKitten-blasphemy!!!!!

He’s a country star and the biggest flirt i’ve ever seen in my life-i’m semi obsessed.

@Eileen, I’ll fight you for him since he’s the TOP of my list!

Love you Ry, but i’m kinda done with you for now…

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Ohhh I was thinking he was an actor. I shall google!

Kinda off-topic but has anyone seen Tim McGraw recently? He lost a ton of weight and looks really different-in a bad way 🙁

I’m not much of a country fan but I always thought he was kinda sexy….

      • eileen says:

@Obvious I will gladly fight you for LB! I saw him in concert this year and OH MY! I was just standing there drooling! I don’t listen to much country-but I do listen to him.
@TheOriginalKitten Thanks girl! I’m sure there would me more if I put my mind to it, but I’d say they will always be Hall Passes -if I ever need those again one day! 😉 Did you Goggle LB yet?
No I haven’t seen TM lately-he look sick?

  5. Ms Kay says:

He’s pulling a Leo move? Both will be probably back in 2014 to promote their new films I presume….

  6. Erinn says:

I don’t understand what’s happening. I never found him as attractive as anyone made him out to be, and I never really got the hype.

Lately though? He’s growing on me. Make it stop.

  7. brin says:

Too bad more celebs don’t feel this way.
    Looking at you, K klan.

  8. Kaye says:

Good for him for being self-aware, something that normally seems to be lacking in his profession (re: all the actors and actresses we wish would take a break!)

at least we have tom hardy with a puppy to tide us over during this Gosling break!

  9. Mia 4S says:

I normally agree that a break can do actors who have had movies out non-stop a lot if good. But, ummm, let’s be brutally honest here, Ryan’s movies have not exactly set the box office on fire in the last little while. I doubt people are tired of seeing him, because they haven’t seen him. He has a lot of fans…but for some reason they don’t go to his movies!

If he wants to do character and small independent he may be in luck. Hollywood is fickle, even with the cute ones.

    • Lin says:

Good point. I’ve always thought that the majority of his fans only exist because they get weepy over The Notebook (UGH). It’s not like they were rushing out to see Blue Valentine or Drive. His most successful movie recently was like Crazy Stupid Love? But that was more of an ensemble. Women just like the idea of him rather than actually watching him act.

      • Ashley says:

Well, the movies he did like Blue Valentine and Drive were smaller movie. His notebook audience wants to see him in romantic comedies so that makes sense that crazy stupid love is the most successful.
I think thats exactly his problem, he wants to do interesting movies but am sure he has studio executives throwing money at him so he can do a notebook type thing again.
That said Blue Valentine, Drive, Half Nelson those type of movies is what gives him oscar nominations and acting cred, which is also part of the package thats made him a hot commodeity.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Guys–Drive was a successful film for a small indie flick. Budget was $15M and it grossed $11M opening week and $35M overall. In terms of indie movies, this is a solid financial return.

I’m a woman-I like watching him act and have been following his career since The Believer.

      • Belle says:

Okay, I love the Notebook and yes, thought he was hot in it and can pretend he is Noah any time I want dammit! Also love Crazy Stupid Love… so… take that! 😉

I’ve enjoyed and gone to see most of his movies, and while I love him as the ‘cute guy’, I think my favorite movie of his was Lars and the Real Girl. Blue Valentine was depressing as crap, but he was excellent in it (as was Michelle Williams).

Obviously, I already like Ryan, but these comments make me respect him more. He’s done a string of movies these past couple of years, seemingly back to back to back, and taking a break to gain some perspective (and giving the audience a break, though I personally don’t need one, some might), is probably the right thing for him to do. He obviously likes the smaller, character-driven roles, and probably just needs to find some balance. Good for him. 🙂

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Hi Belle-I’ve yet to see any movie that he was in that I didn’t like but The Notebook was just a great movie, I don’t care what anyone says 🙂

      • eileen says:

Girrrrrrrl-I agree! I love The Notebook! When he said “It’s still not over!” and kisses her in the rain-my panties want to fly right off!!

    • normades says:

Drive was a huge hit in Europe, commercially and critically. The Notebook isn’t well known here, but Drive upped his profile big time.

I think he’s just trying to pace himself. Sure he can “strike while the iron’s hot”, and take all the leads, but it’s also comes with a big risk if they fail. He wants a long career and he will have it. Ryan is now A list and will continue to be for a long long time. He is smart to take a break.

  10. Talie says:

I think he was probably disappointed with Gangster Squad. He’s so picky and that turned into a huge mistake.

    • Belle says:

Totally agree Talie. As I mentioned above, it seems like he’s done back to back movies, almost non-stop over the past couple of years, and while I think most of them were good… Gangster Squad was one of those… WTF was that? kind of movies. I think he had offers pouring in at the time and probably signed on for more than he really realized (especially when they don’t always know for sure when a movie will release, and end up having several coming out one right after the other). I’m guessing it was a lesson learned for him.

  11. taxi says:

Didn’t Ryan move to LA as a 10 or 12 year old & live with another Disney kid’s family so he could work? I thought he lived/boarded with Timberlake’s family.

  12. Jackie says:

I guess Ryan and Eva are going to start planning the babies. Didn’t he say at one time that if he stops making movies and if he found the right one it would be time to make babies? I say by the end of this year she’s pregnant.

    • Oops says:

yes, I remember this, perhaps but I’m not sure it’s the reason. I think it’s a good idea, some actors (like Fassbender, Jude Law before) are in all the movies and I don’t think it’s good for their career, people are tired of them, think they are try-hard…

    • bns says:

Lainey wrote a blind item and it sounded a lot like Ryan and Eva, saying that they were trying for a baby.

    • Belle says:

Nooooooooo! While I want him to make some baby goslings, I don’t want him to do it with Eva. 🙁

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I know. I want he and JLaw to get together. They would have some HOT babies!!

    • Anne says:

In my dream world, Ryan Gosling quits acting so he can pursue (the now single!) Rachel McAdams, they move to Canada, and live happily ever after.

    • xyz says:

If he wants a private life out of the spotlight, she’s the wrong person to start a family with. She calls the paps when walking his dog. What’s she gonna do with the kids? She loves the attention even though she pretends she doesn’t. I still don’t understand why they are still together.

  13. cheerfulg says:

I think a break is a great idea (even though I am calling total bs). I mean what happened to the actor that did such amazing work on Lars and the Real Girl, Half Nelson or Blue Valentine? I mean I liked Drive but Jeeez for a guy that wore a Darfur t-shirt only 8 years ago, during a very memorable kiss, he has totally gone to the freaking dark side with all of his violently themed films (and yes I know a Terence Malik film coming up, but there was probably a knife scene added to make Gosling happy). Yep, a break would be a super excellent idea….

    • Belle says:

Agree the break is a good idea, but don’t see anything wrong with him taking different types of roles and trying to mix it up, grow as an actor, and reach a different audience.

    • Ranunculus says:

I have to say I loved Drive. Such an artistic masterpiece, and I didn’t mind the violence because it was not gratuitous or just violence for violence sake. But I also loved BV and Lars. Different movies, all of them great IMHO.

That Malick one is probably another big stinker on his resume ….. if he is in it!

  14. El Kiddo says:

i don’t think i have yet to see any of his movies (well, as far as i can recall at least), and seeing him from neutral eyes, i can say that he is really ordinary looking. Not hot at all. That’s 1 less Gosling fan-girl you guys!

  15. lady mary. says:

well said ryan , now if only KIM OR ANN e could ever Say IT or try it atleast

  16. bns says:

    Good idea. He’s effing annoying.

  17. Liv says:

“Working with someone is the best way to get to know someone, especially if it’s a creative endeavor.”

Ah, so did he discover Eva’s arrogant and bitchy side then? He’s obviously not very good in getting to know people. He’s either an asshole himself or doesn’t know her very well.

    • jane says:

I agree. Did you hear the comments Eva made recently? She’s complaining about how being so beautiful is such a burden. I mean, is she for real? This isn’t the first time she’s gone on and on about her looks. She said directors don’t like to hire her because she’s too beautiful, but I think it has more to do with her lack of talent. She sounds like an extremely vain and narcissistic person. How can he not see that?! I’m not sure I’d want to know him if he’s ok with that kind of attitude in a partner. Ever since he started associating with her, it’s been making me think the Ryan he projects out to the world is completely different than the Ryan in real life.

  18. TheOriginalKitten says:

None of this is new to me.

Ryan has always struck me as a thoughtful, interesting guy that is really devoted to his craft. Never had any doubt that he has plenty of self-awareness as well.

Great actor-I hope he doesn’t take too much time off because I love seeing him in movies. It’s not his fault that the media painted him as some teen hearthrob-people that have been following his career for a long time know that he’s so much more than that.

  19. carol says:

I lol’d at the hipster outfit in the pic

  20. ashley says:

He has taken a 3 year break before so its not something new to him,so I believe him when he says it.

  21. Ranunculus says:

Translation – my year of photo ops and famewhoring for A list status only resulted in 3 box office failures and WB cancelling my opportunity as a lead in a major blockbuster.

  22. Jackie says:

I don’t get why he would announce it though. Just take the break and don’t say anything. All this does is draw more attention to him, and for someone who wants to get away from the spotlight (as he claims), this just shines a bigger spotlight on him. It’s in all the headlines today. I used to be a big fan of his and I used to admire how he could disappear for a while and then come back in amazing indie movies, Half Nelson and Lars and the Real Girl. Now I can’t separate Ryan Gosling from his roles/characters anymore. To me they’re the same people.

    • T.C. says:

      +1

Reminds me of Leo and his similar announcement about taking a break. Just do it but no need for a major announcement. It screams look at me.

  23. RHONYC says:

holy cow! his mom looks like Roseanne!!!

i always tell my beloved that we are gonna die just like in ‘The Notebook’ when we are 100.

    it’s a mood lifter. 😆

  24. Mary says:

Noooooooo! I miss him already! 🙂

  25. NeoCleo says:

I don’t find him cutesy at all. He is an intelligent, well-spoken, ambitious, good-looking young man who is boyishly attractive. He makes me feel like a right dirty old lady.

Incidentally, that’s what Eva looks like whenever they’re together. So, yeah, he is a mama’s boy. I just don’t have a problem with that.

  26. oliveo says:

Come back to us soon, Gosling. Preferably in a “Lars and the Real Girl” type of vehicle where I can watch ya as a character and not as Ryan Gosling the Heartthrob.

  27. EscapedConvent says:

I think the Baby Goose is a smart, thoughful guy & a compelling actor.

Check “The Believer”—a great movie, & he was only 22. This would have been a diffcult part for anyone, but he convinced me. I hope he doesn’t stay away too long.

  28. Allie says:

Sure he might be taking a break from acting, but I would assume that’s mostly to shift his focus to directing his first feature. It’s not like he’s going to be sitting around doing nothing.

  29. Gemini08 says:

I love Ryan and I love his interviews. He always comes across as a sensitive smart and self-aware person. With a huge dose of geek- which i LOVE!

  30. Eleonor says:

He is a good actor, but I don’t get all the fuz around his “hotness”, to me he is cute, but not sexy at all.

  31. Lizzie says:

YES he’s from Ontario, he’s from London (and Rachel McAdams is from right outside London)! I go to the university in London and when they came up with a new slogan (it’s “London: Canada’s London”…. I know) there were a bunch of joke slogans going around. One of the best ones was “London: The Residency of Ryan Gosling’s Placenta”.

  32. I Choose Me says:

Love him in as an actor and though he comes off as pretentious sometimes I still wanna nail him to the wall.

  33. MelissaH says:

I think he’s big on the internet, but not so much in the movies. Bradley Cooper is going to suffer from burnout before Gosling is.

  34. LL2 says:

I now like him even more.

  35. Larissa says:

    Dear Ryan,
No! I won’t need a break from you, like NEVER!

    Love,
    Larissa.

  36. Antidoll says:

NOOOOOOOO! *heart breaking* ow :¢ nobody wants a break from ryan
