Lauren Graham on the trials of showbiz: ‘I’ve been on a diet for 35 years’

Lauren Graham

Lauren Graham covers the May issue of More magazine, and it’s hard to believe that this woman is 46 years old. She looks fantastic! Lauren is promoting “Parenthood” — I think — which is the only thing that her IMDb profile reveals that she’s been working on besides a Christmas-type movie. Speaking of that holiday, I know that a lot of you harbor a lot of affection for her role in “Gilmore Girls,” but I enjoyed her quite a bit in Bad Santa even though that was a much naughtier turn.

Lauren does mention in this interview that she was just finished writing her first novel at the behest of one Diane Keaton, so that’s something to look forward to. Also, Lauren discusses how the past few decades as an actress have taken a toll on her eating habits. That is, she says she’s been on a neverending diet for 35 years. I hope that’s an exaggeration because that would mean she’s been dieting since about age 11. Luckily, her rack has not been affected by such drastic measures as you can see from the below sample picture from the photoshoot. Here are some excerpts:

Lauren Graham

She never lets herself eat like crazy: “I’ve been on a diet for 35 years.”

On getting older: “I’ve spent a lot of time wondering, ‘What’s going to happen? I try not to allow myself to do that much anymore. I think I’ve gotten more comfortable with the unknown.”

She gets frustrated with career slowdowns: “Acting is the most bizarre profession. You can stay in it for years and not really be in it and be waiting for someone to give you an opportunity. It’s like when I watch ‘American Idol’ and see people who have been told to believe in themselves at all costs: It’s not always a good idea.”

She’s also a writer: The actress recently penned her first novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe. Graham was inspired to pursue her passion for words by Diane Keaton, who played her meddlesome mother in 2007’s Because I Said So. “If she had told me to consider a career in banking, I would have done that. I wanted to write about the tiny, tiny progress and the complete unknown of wanting to follow any impossible dream.”

Hmm. I think Lauren might actually be joking about the 35-year diet because she’s never appeared overly skinny, right? Maybe she just watches what she eats and calls it a diet. She doesn’t have the strung-out look of a Goop who completely obsesses over food and punishes herself with daily two-hour workouts after taking a bite of fried chicken. Lauren does look quite lovely as always here, doesn’t she?

I think Lauren looks lovely. But I am sure she does have to watch what she eats. Could we write more about her and less about Rob and Kristen?…even better include Lauren’s handsome boyfriend, Peter Krause in these updates.

  2. Faye says:

She may not be super-skinny, but she is fairly slender, and that doesn’t happen without constantly watching what you eat and exercising (perhaps with occasional, infrequent splurges).

I admire her for telling the truth. Nothing worse than these celebs talking about their “fast metabolisms” and staying super-slim through occasional yoga . . . yeah, right. It takes work to stay slim, and that’s fine; why not be honest about it?

I think she’s really pretty. Good role model for “aging” well.

    • momoftwo says:

Agreed! I always like when celebrities are honest about the work it takes to maintain your figure.

It only takes a few extra hundred calories a week to put weight on in the long term so I do think you have to be diligent to maintain!

As one of the 67% overweight Americans I admire her discipline (as long as she’s healthy about it!)

    • Addison says:

She looks great! I commend her for her will power. Wish I had that. She gad always looked good. I don’t think she looks too skinny which is the way to go.

  3. Dutchy says:

I LOVE her! I loveloveLOVED Gilmore Girls (read someting about her and ‘Rory’ signing on to a movie.., did anybody else read this? so excited if true..)

In Bad Santa she was awesome, and I like her on Parenthood too.

She seems so ‘normal’ and she always looks great. Wish i’d look like that and I am 20 years younger..

    • brin says:

I agree, loved her on GG! I didn’t hear about a movie but I hope it’s true.

    • Miss Kiki says:

This might have been what you read, I still think it’s unlikely though.

      • Dutchy says:

I guess you’re right, still hoping though 😉 I would be AWESOME! I miss Luke (he was HOT) and Sookie.. And what about Lane’s twins.. *dreaming* 🙂

      • Miss Kiki says:

Aww man I LOVED Luke. Unpopular opinion but I really liked Rory and Logan together. I would have been happy if she’d ended up with him or Jess just as long it wasn’t Dean.

My favourite thing about Sookie was that never once in all the episodes was her weight mentioned let alone made fun of, so it makes me really sad when I see Melissa in films that point out her weight.

      • Dutchy says:

        @ Miss Kiki

I really liked Logan too! And Jess was hot too, but I disliked Dean.. a lot! His character became such a loser after the first break-up with Rory. Living with his annoying parents after his divorce.

Talking about them makes me miss them more and more.

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yay can we just keep this GG-love thread going all day? Ah! I just sat and watched a bunch of episodes from season 2 w a girlfriend this weekend. Forgot how much of a jealous dbag Dean was. I REALLY liked Logan, but he was too ballsy for Rory and he wanted a girl who was more of a sidekick than strong, ambitious young woman. Jess was awesome, esp after he matured and wrote a book. Really wanted them to start up again, Logan was awful to Jess…ahh love this show..I loved how in the series finale she met Christiane Amanpour! Would be all about a movie, though it would just leave us wanting more.

      • j.eyre says:

I loved Luke. I also really like Rory and Logan – they actually gave me butterflies when they were together – but I love that she turned him down. It just seemed the right thing to do.

The forced ending on that show was so unfortunate. Throughout its run, the show had some moments of brilliance and some really complicated relationships that they never pandered to. Does anyone remember the scene when Emily met the Innkeeper (can’t remember her name) that took Lorelai in?

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yes, Mia was the Innkeeper.. That was an intense relationship btwn Emily and Mia, obv on Emily’s part lol drama queen! Bittersweet situation. Those complex, multi-layered relationships really added depth to the show. Another one was Lucy’s boyfriend, Marty, that had been friends w Rory earlier and created a lot of awkwardness…ahh..sigh. Cant get enough. Why do Trekkies get conventions and Gilmoreans dont?

  4. Liv says:

I think she’s totally serious. She’s probably not starving, but has to eat less. So sad that women are scrutinized to have a certain body shape and yet most women in entertainment business who do are starving and can’t probably enjoy food.

  5. Joanna says:

wow, she looks great! I like her. more posts please

  6. Miss Kiki says:

I love GG, Lorelai and Luke were one of the best couples ever (as if I still get this fangirly about it.

As for the diet thing, I think she probably was joking. I think diet is kind of a funny word, I’ve been watching what I eat for the last 5 years, it’s not a diet I’m just aware of what I’m putting into my (amazing) body.

    • Hoya_chick says:

Ms. Kiki! I’m back to agreeing with you. Wholeheartedly! I’m currently watching the 5th season where they started really dating and that scene where they are on their first date and he had the horoscope she had given him 5 years earlier and he’s all like, I’m all in. OMG swoon. Lol. Love, love, love GG and LG is so gorgeous and smart and self deprecating. If you’ve ever seen her being interviewed you would probably see that she is joking here. I think she means she eats healthily and takes care of herself.

    • Miss Kiki says:

      Thank f-k for that!

OMG I love that episode, when she comes down to the diner wearing his shirt and the whole town is there. I looove the last episode of season 4 when Luke and Lorelai kiss for the first time *dies*

Oddly enough I’ve never actually seen LG interviewed, I only watched GG for the first time about 4 years ago.

      • Chordy says:

Luke and Lorelei’s first kiss was so amazing! I actually just got butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it. God I wish the CW had just given the Sherman-Palladinos everything they wanted. We got totally cheated out of the last two years of Luke and Lorelei.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Here’s the thing about she and Luke. He made romantic gestures, but kept putting off committing to her. He really cared about her, but with his hot temper and general disdain for life, Lorelai Gilmore was too good for him. I personally felt she and Christopher belonged together. (and yes all fangirly over here too lol)

      • Miss Kiki says:

Nooo not Christopher. I get that they needed to get together at some point, if only it had been done in the earlier seasons and they’d broken because she realised that she was in love with Luke, rather than in the last few season when they did it. It didn’t ring true for me at that point.

Luke started reading self help books adn listening to the tapes, what more do you want??!!

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yeah she loved Luke and he did sweet things (the frozen pond in her yard, the jeep getting a new engine, Rory’s graduation/going away party etc) but he was so selfish that he wouldn’t commit to her. Didnt help when that Nardini daughter of his dropped out of the sky. He channeled all his energy and emotion at that, not even considering Lorelai through any of it – and they were ENGAGED. There sits Christopher, the man who will do anything to be with her, all heartbroken. Unrequited love all over the place..Chris loves LG, LG loves Luke, Luke loves Frizzy Nardidni and the rest is history. LOL

      • Miss Kiki says:

Grrr I had totally forgotten about Nardini and her annoying kid. All this GG reminiscing has encourage me to go home and watch it all over again.

      • Hoya_chick says:

The show totally jumped the shark after the 5 season. Actually, it jumped it during the 5th season. That whole Luke has a daughter he doesn’t know about was beyond stupid and ridiculous. They needed a reason to keep them apart after they got engaged and that was the weakest plot line ever. Actually, when Rory and Loreli stopped talking was worse. Ugh. After the original creators/writers left it was never the same. I don’t think Loreli and Christopher belonged together. They just sorta had unfinished business. I loved her and Luke. And yea that kiss was the best. It’s in syndication on soap net and abc family if you guys wanna watch. I can’t get them on DVD because then I’d watch them everyday and drive everyone I know crazy :). Bf will bite the bullet and get it for me though, he secretly loves watching with me even though he would die if anyone knew. Ha.

I also loved how Sookie’s character’s weight was a none issue! I thought Logan was a pompous douche and while I loved Dean in the earlier seasons be did become a jerk and it seemed as though Rory outgrew him. I think Jess, once he grew up and wrote his book was the best match for her. Is it weird for a mother and daughter to end up with an uncle and his nephew?! Lol.

  7. Elsie says:

I assumed she was promoting her novel that’s just been released, but it looks like there’s no mention of it? but the rest of her interview aligns with that? HMMMMM

  8. lucy2 says:

I like her a lot too, mostly carry over from Gilmore, but she just seems down to earth and fun too.
She’s never looked sickly skinny, but rather healthy and in good shape. It would suck to think of yourself as constantly on a diet though.

  9. Eleonor says:

I am totally buying it, I appreciate her honesty.

  10. NerdMomma says:

She really does look fantastic, but the Photoshop work is pretty obvious. Booo.

  11. bns says:

Kim Cattrall said something similar. I, on the other hand, can’t live without my pasta, pizza, and fries.

  12. marie says:

she’s lovely, I’ve liked just about everything she’s done.

  13. Seagulls says:

I like her. She seems so normal, and she’s so pretty!

  14. serena says:

She looks great but something is off in those photos. I don’t know it looks like they attached her head on someone else’s body.. and her rack I didn’t really need to see it, I would have preferred some good outfits and not those hideous ones.

  15. tracking says:

She’s very slender (these pics are deceiving; she’s not remotely voluptuous), so I wouldn’t be surprised about the diet part. I’ve taken to watching her forehead in Parenthood. No movement–but good not overdone interventions. Do miss GG.

  16. Ally says:

Gorgeous pic, love her. Off to find her book.

  17. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Does anyone know if Parenthood is renewed?? I havent been able to find anything online leading me to believe cancelled or renewed and it’s freaking me out bc I love that show so much!!!!

  18. RobN says:

I like her, but who is that woman in the photo?

  19. dcypher1 says:

Ill take her over poop I mean goop anyday. And she looks way better than goop too.

  20. Jayna says:

Phtoshopped. I love her, but on her TV show she looks 45. A pretty 45, but definitely not so fresh like these photos.

  21. Lauren Carter says:

I loved her too….that’s why I have a hard time accepting this…my cousin did background on Gilmore girls years ago and said she was the biggest bitch in real life 😢

  22. Bina says:

I remember reading a while back that Luke and Lorene, the actors, didn’t get along off camera. Kind of burst my bubble on the whole thing, I loved their chemistry on the show!

  23. Lisa says:

Ugh, Gilmore Girls had to be one of the most annoying shows. I feel like it started that trend of rapid-fire reciting, where the characters barely interact with each other, just trade sorta connecting lines.

  24. Heathers says:

I’m sorry. No matter what the outfit looks like, or the quality of the light, it’s super trashy to pose like that (2nd photo) with your boobs hanging out. You may as well be dressed in leather with a riding crop on a poster in a brothel. Other than that, yes, she looks beautiful.
