Natalie Portman cast as Lady Macbeth to Fassbender’s Macbeth: ugh or awesome?

Ugh, they should have cast the green dude ^^ as Lady Macbeth.

Yesterday we discussed the now sure-thing casting decision of Michael Fassbender in a new screen adaptation of Macbeth. The idea of Fassy-as-Macbeth was applauded by many of us as a smart casting choice, but in the initial reporting, they were still searching for a suitable Lady Macbeth. I suggested Jessica Chastain because I would love the ginger-on-ginger action and because I think Jessica would be able to nail the hell out of “Out, out damn spot” scene. Other casting ideas from the comments section: Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Emily Blunt. The vibe I kept getting for everyone is that they should not cast an American, but if they did cast an American, it should be someone like Chastain. Guess what? They cast an American. And it’s not Chastain. It’s NATALIE PORTMAN.

Oscar-winner Natalie Portman will play Lady Macbeth opposite Michael Fassbender in the upcoming version of Macbeth, announced by ScreenDaily yesterday. It is due to shoot later in 2013. Screen understands that Portman has long wanted to take on the role, previously considering stage versions, and that the actress was keen to renew her collaboration with Fassbender after the two recently wrapped production on Terrence Malick’s latest film about the Texas music scene.

Snowtown’s Justin Kurzel will direct the update of Shakespeare’s classic thriller produced by The King’s Speech and Shame producers See-Saw. Writers are Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff. The script has been one of the most in-demand ahead of the Cannes Film Festival with a number of sales outfits keen to work on the film.

Development and production backing on the UK-Australian co-production comes from Film4. The production sees Fassbender reunited with Shame producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman and Film4, with whom the actor worked on Hunger, Shame and the upcoming Frank.

The new take on Shakespeare’s classic – about a ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord who siezes the throne with the help of his scheming wife and three witches – is set in the 11th century and in the original language. The script is understood to be a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes.

Portman will next be seen in superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World and she is currently shooting Jane Got a Gun, which previously had Fassbender on board. The actress is represented by Brillstein Entertainment and CAA.

[From Screen Daily]

Ugh, why are Portman and Fassbender on each other’s jocks these days? Surely they don’t have that much chemistry. I rarely think Natalie has chemistry with any of her leading men though, unless you’re talking about Jean Reno and maybe (!) Clive Owen in Closer, although the Clive Owen thing is all HIM and not her. Clive Owen could have sexual chemistry with a lamp post. And that lamp post would get pregnant too. Anyway, casting Natalie Portman as Lady Macbeth totally kills my lady boner. It’s dull, uninspired and it will ruin the project. But! The last time Fassy and Portman were cast opposite each other, Fassbender ended up pulling out of the film like the day before the production began (that was Jane Got a Gun). So maybe this isn’t as for-sure as it sounds. Hopefully.

    Ugh.

  2. T.Fanty says:

This Project just went from boring to unwatchable. She is the dullest actress. I saw her in The Seagull in Central Park a few years ago, and she just sucked the play dry. When she started talking about killing herself, I wanted to stand up and shoot her myself.

    • Christina says:

Yup. She sucks the life out of any character she’s let near. And I’ve seen shop mannequins with more presence and sex appeal than she has.

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

      This. This. This.

    • Anmelt says:

Agreed. She is so pretty but so dull.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Yup and *sigh*.

Beautiful but soulless this one is.

      • gg says:

She is so leaden, thick tongued, and can’t do any British accent to save her life and they should never cast her as a Brit. And don’t tell me they’re going to make her attempt a Scottish accent now. ugh. It just doesn’t work. She was terrible as Boleyn, and to make it worse the entire cast of Boleyn Girl sucked, imo. Although it’s a crappily written book, they could’ve upclassed it had they cast actual Brits as British historical royalty.

      • Rumorhasit says:

Oh come on, who else could give us the deadness of Padmé: Hold me, like you did by the lake on Naboo; so long ago when….she turned an entire legion of Star Wars fans against her with this stunningly apathetic, phoned in performance.

    • Apples says:

      Ha ha ha! Totally agree.

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @Fanty & all y’all:

What about the fabulous, wild-eyed, wild-haired Helena Bonham Carter? I don’t know what kind of chemistry she might have with Fassy, but I’m sure there would be some. I can imagine her blowing the doors off the place as Lady Mac. Wonder if she has ever played her.

I’m surprised I didn’t think of her yesterday.

      • Agnes says:

Portman – a vat of lukewarm oatmeal would do a better job.

And a huge YES to Bonham Carter! She can do crazy like its her only business.

      • Tiffany :) says:

        HBC is a great suggestion!

      • Rumorhasit says:

The uninspired studio should have had you cast this movie, then perhaps it would have amounted to something….with HBC it would have been off the chart. Instead they played it predictable and safe and cast this milksop, with her ugly cry.

    • I Choose Me says:

Truer words and all that. She hasn’t been watchable since Leon – no real screen presence to speak of. And I hate her stupid cry face.

    • Marie says:

I think she was pretty awesome in “V for vendetta” and “Black Swan”

  3. Tanguerita says:

She is not a bad actress (overrated, yet not bad), but there is something extremely asexual about her – she is a typical child-woman – it’s true there has never been any chemistry between her and any of her screen partners. Wrong choice.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

she was great in The Other Boleyn Sister

      • FLORC says:

Really? I think she would have been better casted if scarjo and her switched roles, but she was the same in that role as all others. Tanguerita has a good point. There is something very a-sexual about her. It’s odd to watch an actor with that quality.

      • Adrien says:

Good acting but her mousy voice and girly looks distract also no chemistry between Natalie and Eric Bana whatsoever.

      • Maya says:

Yes but that movie was SO AWFUL. Portman might have made an okay Anne Boleyn if she’d had a decent script to work with, but as it was her performance can’t hold a candle to Natalie Dormer’s Anne.

      • L says:

The 2003 BBC version with Jodhi May as Anne is SO much better. Natalie was a wooden emotionless board (and the script was better to)

      • Christina says:

        @L I agree.

Jodhi May was a hundred times better, though she looked much too young to play Anne Boleyn. Apart from being a crap actress, Portman was absolutely the wrong choice for Boleyn, who was not beautiful, but had enormous sex appeal and charisma. By contrast, Boleyn IS beautiful but has the charisma and sex appeal of a slice of soggy white bread.

      • Christina says:

Ugh. Meant to say PORTMAN is beautiful.

The thought of this casting choice is making my head spin, sorry!

      • MisJes says:

The best portrayal of Anne Boleyn I have ever seen is Natalie Dormer’s in The Tudors, hands down. She made Natalie Portman’s attempt look erroneous and paltry.

      • Anna says:

Has no one seen Anne of a Thousand Days? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064030/ Bujold is the ultimate Anne and that film is the definitive take on that relationship. The other Boleyn Girl was SUCH a snooze.

      • gg says:

Genevieve Bujold was the best Anne Boleyn though.

      • Rumorhasit says:

Anne of a Thousand Days has it hands down. Genevieve Bujold nailed it. She’s always AB in my mind whenever I’m reading about her.

      • FLORC says:

        Anna you’re so right.
I got lost in the good acting. Portman is pretty with make up and a whitewashing, but she is not the actress she thinks she is.

      • Sara says:

I thought she was horribly embarrassing in the role.

    • MisJes says:

I have, and I didn’t find Genevieve Bujold (or the entire film for that matter) anything to write home about.

      • Christina says:

Bujold was great, but I think she’s too conventionally pretty to play Anne Boleyn (actually she looks rather like Natalie Portman, or rather, what Natalie Portman would look like if she had a bit of character and life in her face). Richard Burton imho was the ultimate Henry Vlll, even if the whole film is a bit dated.

At first I didn’t like Natalie Dormer in the Tudors. She overused the same gestures and mannerisms, and seemed a bit cloying at times. However, she really grew into the role. You could see her developing as an actress as Anne’s plight deepened. I thought she was magnificent in the final episode – so understated and yet so profound. Head and shoulders above Poutman.

  4. Liz says:

She comes across so girly. Like a wounded fragile bird. Really not a fan of her acting so I’m not loving this choice.

  5. EscapedConvent says:

What a bland, wrong-headed idea for such an important character. Did the casting idiots even consider someone appropriate for this part? I was so excited to hear Fassy would play Macbeth; now hearing this news is completely deflating.

Portman is as compelling to watch as a blank slate. I may not even want to see this.

    • loma says:

      +1000

You need depth and emotional range to play Lady Macbeth.

    • LadyMTL says:

I agree 100%, she doesn’t have the gravitas to pull this off. I’m thinking that the producers just thought “Hmmm…crazy woman? Well, Portman won an Oscar for being all crazy in Black Swan so she can do the Shakespeare thing too!”

Sad to say I’ll probably skip this.

      • Amber says:

“I’m thinking that the producers just thought ‘Hmmm…crazy woman?'” That’s what I thought too @LadyMTL. I think if she were cast it would be for, “Out, out damn spot”. I actually don’t have much against Natalie… as long as she stays in her lane. She can do melodrama, pouting, hysteria, crazy, sure. (She’s like the white Halle Berry, isn’t she? Crying’s what they do best and they win awards for that stuff.) But Lady Macbeth basically has three phases, not just the cray-cray, sleepwalking bit. I can’t imagine Ms. Portman, with her little girl voice and stunning lack of sex appeal, being a woman that a man like Macbeth would love. I can’t see her manipulating and attacking his ambitions, while questioning his manhood. Those elements of sexuality and gender roles are key to the play (her wishing to be “unsexed” and Macbeth’s inability to defend himself in that moment). Who knows, sometimes a rumor is just complete crap or they float stuff out to see what people think. Casting Portman would be terribly cynical. It’s the Shakespeare equivalent of H-Wood casting people who can’t sing or dance in classic musicals (see “Into the Woods” casting rumors for the latest ex.). I’m tired of it. I’d shave my head to see Tilda though. Brilliant actress, mesmerizing, intense, androgynous looks, has an accent already (another thing Portman CAN’T do). Tilda is ideal.

      • andrea says:

Haha, “stunning lack of sex appeal” is perfect for Portman. I don’t think she’s been exciting since The Professional, and that was probably only because of the taboo.

    • Christina says:

+ 1 to all of the above. Portman is a horrible actress. I was dreaming up the possibility of Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett or even Natalie Dormer playing opposite Fassbender….. and then this? The woman’s range extends to pouting and sulking and then back to pouting again. She should be let nowhere near a Shakespeare role, let alone Lady Macbeth. I love Shakespeare and I love Macbeth, so deflated doesn’t begin to cover how I feel about this.

      • Amelia says:

Oh, if *only* they cast Tilda Swinton!
Lady MacBeth is such an important role, you really need someone with the gravitas to pull it off.
And I just want to laugh at the screen whenever I see Natalie Portman attempt ‘serious’.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I was having dreams about Tilda. That woman could read a phone book and make it edgy and fascinating.

    • gg says:

I agree. I am no longer interested in seeing this movie. The flat, thick-tongued attempt at an accent is going to be too distracting for me.

  6. loma says:

ugh to everything Natalie. Boring and dull but I guess she’s pretty.

I remember those photos from set with her and Fassbender. Natalie’s husband was glaring at them, now Fassbender is no longer on the project.

I think she likes him and wants an affair. Something not very straight forward about her.

  7. Maria says:

I’m so meh to this casting choice.

Natalie is lovely to look at and I think she was okay in Black Swan but Lady MacBeth?

    Hell no.

All the splendid casting choices in yesterday’s thread got me so excited and this announcement came out and I’m let down.

I’m hoping she backs out or he does last minute THOUGH I’d rather it be her, Fassy does wonderful in roles like this.

  8. Scal says:

Ugh. You need to be a strong, smart, sassy, ambitious woman to be Lady MacBeth. (but also one with a conscience to be able to play the guilt scenes well) ANyone else would have been better.

  9. Beth says:

    I like her.

  10. j.eyre says:

Uninspired was the word I used as well. She will be okay, not great, but it’s a safe, vanilla choice and Lady M is not a part that should be played safe.

    • T.Fanty says:

Well, I think the production is making a statement with this casting. Now we know exactly what this production is going to be: uninspiring and insulting to the intelligence of the classroom demographic it’s aiming for. This is being made to sell to schools.

  11. Lucretia says:

I like her too. Here’s what’s boring: all the predictable Natalie hating.
Some (not all) of the suggestions yesterday would have killed the movie.

    • EscapedConvent says:

I don’t see how Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton or Eva Green could “kill” a movie. All of them have the fire it takes to play Lady Mac.

Natalie Portman may not have killed any movies, but she has certainly put some of them, & me, into a coma.

Since it’s a done deal now, I am going to say damn the torpedoes—they should have tried to get Jolie. We know she can do crazy, & she could wear her outfit from Maleficent.

      • Christina says:

The only actress who would have been almost (but not quite) as awful as Portman would be Jolie. She’s a medicore actress at best, with no depth or range. I’ll never ever forget her faux Russian accent when portraying a Macedonian Greek in the awful ‘Alexander.’

      • lady mary. says:

True ,angie has always been a weak actress with terrible dialogue delivery ,i would have loved to see a young KATE WINSLET a lady macbeth ,kate was fiery ,passionate ,vulnerable in her earlier days of “corset ” roles ,would have loved to see her in this role ,we now barely have anyone of that calibre among young stars

      • Christina says:

Why a ‘young Kate Winslet’? There’s no clear indication of Lady Macbeth’s age in the play, but I think most of us get the impression that she is not a very young woman. Winslet would make a great Lady Macbeth at her current age, imho. On paper, Portman isn’t too young for the role, but she looks permanently 17, which is not what you need for Lady Macbeth.

      • chutzpah says:

Oh god Eva Green would be perfect -now im even more annoyed at Portman!

Also isn’t it strange that the most sexually charismatic ive ever seen her on screen ( because she never is) was when she was in Leon…and underage

      • Jamik123 says:

Angelina Jolie is a great actress. I don’t why anyone would put her on Portmans acting level. Trust me, she is not .Angelina could play evil and manupiliative. Natalie looks like a little girl, flat cheasted and all, and looks non-threating. She honestly looks like a 12 year old girl.
Also, Angelina can do a brit accent atleast. Natalie can’t do even a simple english accent, this casting is very wrong.

  12. kronster says:

    MEGA ugh.
    Not gonna watch it.

  13. Maya says:

NO. I want Rosamund Pike!! Or Andrea Riseborough. Or Jessica Chastain. Not Natalie effing Portman.

  14. Ai says:

Big Ugh… Total miscast! Of all the great actresses out there…

  15. GoodCapon says:

A very very safe, predictable and boring choice.

I didn’t know that Michael pulled out of Jane Got A Gun. I googled it and he was replaced by Bradley Cooper! What a downgrade.

    • I Choose Me says:

Granted Bradley’s no Michael Fassbender but he can act. I think Bradley Cooper will surprise folks in future.

      • GoodCapon says:

I like Bradley (Alias days) but I still think Fassbender is on another league.

    • Oops says:

Cooper have also left the project, it’s a mess perhaps because of her, I really want to know what the problem is

  16. lady mary. says:

“Clive owen could even have a sexual chemistry withhh a lamp post ” well said Kaiser!
Natlie makes her male costars look like her dad or some kind of relative to look after her hwile she is all childish and innocent, she barely has the sex appeal or i dunno she barely brings out the fierce passion or rawnness out of her character , she only eludes vulnerbility and thats so not LADY MACBETH

  17. Allie says:

She’s gorgeous, but I haven’t been able to look at her the same way after she signed that Roman Polanski petition.

  18. Downton fan says:

Aaaaand that’s all the clarification I needed to skip this adaptation. I cannot tolerate Portman. I don’t understand why she keeps getting cast in interesting projects. She alienates the female moviegoers with her “I am perfect” demeanour

  19. mimi says:

She is talented, beautiful and intelligent.

    Why all the negativity?
    She can certainly act.
She is also classy and seems nice.

How could anyone speak against her being casted?

    • pfeiffer87 says:

Because it’s Lady effing Macbeth! You have to be creepy & haunting & strong to play her. Dammit Tilda – I was rooting for you!

    • Maria says:

She is very lovely and talented but bland and cannot pull of calculating.

Part of what made her role in Black Swan ideal is that the character had no clue she was crazy. Her character in that particular movie was a “good girl” who not until the very end was shown to be the “bad” one….

I can’t see her as Lady MacBeth because she has an innocence to her face that her acting can’t contradict.

      /my .02

    • Happymom says:

I think she’s beautiful, but a terrible actress. She’s dull and flat in everything she’s in. Totally overrated.

    • Ali says:

I don’t think Natalie’s beautiful, talented, or intelligent, so here comes some negativity.

I think she’s plain, wooden, and vapid. I think those are three very good reasons for her not to play Lady Macbeth. She was intolerable in Thor. She was the second worst thing about the those horrible Star Wars movies. How can she be trusted with such timeless and dynamic material? She’s going to take the haunting, powerful, sexually charged crazy out of Lady Macbeth and turn her into an annoying emotionally stunted asexual bore. Yay!

      • Pixie says:

Oh God did she ever help to ruin the Star Wars prequels…I’ve never found her particularly brilliant and am quite gutted she’s going to be in Thor 2.

  20. Merman says:

    Oh c’mon!!!

  21. Louise says:

LOL @ the green guy being cast as Lady Macbeth! But I agree 110%. This must be stopped.

  22. Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I find her to be a sterile, asexual little dress up doll with no emotional range to speak of. I hope Fassy bails on this one. Casting her just killed it.

  23. Talie says:

My real problem with this is her British accent… it’s bad. I agree, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, there are many others.

  24. Christina says:

If I force myself to look on the bright side, at least they didn’t cast Kiara ‘chin’ Knightley. She may not be as personally obnoxious, but she is an even worse actress than Portman. Which is really saying something.

    • newbie says:

You have something there with that one. Kiera Knightly would have been the only other worst choice than Portman.
Portman has all the chemistry of a dead trout.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah, I would say Keira would be my last choice, Portman second-to-last.

      • dunzo says:

Don’t forget Anne Hathaway ! I think she’s even worse than Keira Knightley ;-D

  25. mkyarwood says:

    UGH. NO. UGH.

  26. allons-y alonso says:

Michael K over on Dlisted has some excellent casting suggestions instead of Portman. I particularly like the idea of Sweet Brown

” Sweet Brown (“This spot? I ain’t got time for that!”)”

  27. Leek says:

Eeeww!! No! She just sucks so bad. It’s like watching an asexual child. Even in my 20’s party girl phase I don’t think I ever wanted someone to “pull out” as much as I hope Fassbender does on Macbeth.

  28. amanda says:

They should have cast Rachel Weizs. Stunningly beautiful, smart, and an amazing actress who would do wonders with this role. Plus, her english accent would actually sound realistic. 😛

    • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

      Another good choice.

I also feel that casting a slightly older woman would give the on screen relationship a good extra edge. Highly appropriate for Lady Macbeth, who should be a very powerful, experienced, somewhat dominant woman.

    • Lux says:

Oh god, rachel & fassy in a movie together? The screen would probably burst into flames from all the heat.

  29. truthful says:

    meh..

this time yesterday, I was humming along at work w/Fassybaby on my mind
    anticipating this film.

now they go and do this…

Portman was decent in the “other bolyen girl” or whatever it was named but not
good enough for Macbeth and Fassy.

this whole thing is an emotional rolleroaster…

Cate Blanchett could have brought it too! Portman not so much.

  30. lucy2 says:

I think Natalie is a very good actress – in the right role. This is probably not that role.

  31. Lou says:

This is TERRIBLE news. She’s a dull, wooden, awful actress. And her British accent SUCKS. Are they crazy?

  32. Tania says:

What an awful choice. Guess I won’t be going to see it!

  33. mkyarwood says:

P.S. The ‘green dudes’ name is Erik Sprague, and he’s a great guy. Does a great standup routine: http://www.thelizardman.com/

    • Jenna says:

Huzzah! Someone else who knows his name! I have no idea why, but that just made me weirdly but incredibly happy.

What can I say, I’ve spent the vast majority of my day thus far endlessly researching how to get started on my leg tattoo so I’m in a very pro-tat-offbeat mind state. (I’ve resigned myself to the fact that a health issue is going to forever make me incredibly self conscious about my leg, so it’s time to decorate. Otherwise, I’m never going to be in anything other then jean, trousers, or full dark no way to see through tights again.)

  34. moon says:

No please. Woman cannot act to save her life. She’ll play it the way she played Anne Boleyn in that Eric Bana movie – dull, dull, dull. A lot of eyebrow flashing and shouting.

It’ll be such a waste of Fassy’s talent.

Tilda on the other hand, would be a really good Lady Macbeth. Emily Blunt could pull it off. Portman is overrated and a bad actress, I hate that she gets so much undeserved clout over better actresses.

  35. PortlandJan says:

Aren’t they both a bit long in the tooth to be playing Macbeth and his Lady? In real life, Lady Macbeth was probably no more than 18 or 19 (she said in her earliest soliloquy that she hadn’t been married long) and may have been even younger than that.

    • Christina says:

There’s no ‘real life’ as these characters were not strictly historical. And where do you get the impression Lady Macbeth was a teenager? She makes it clear in her famous speech that she has had children and has breastfed them, and we also know that she and Macbeth have no children together. Therefore it must be her second marriage, so she’s likely to be considerably older than 19.

Also, Macbeth was a very senior figure in the Scottish ruling class, so it’s likely he was middle aged at least, and probably his wife too. That certainly is the way both of them are most commonly portrayed. Lady Macbeth is a role for an actress of depth and experience. NOT pouty Portman.

      • Crumpets and Crotchshots says:

I completely agree. I have *never* had the impression of Lady M being young, nevermind a fertile teenager. Good heavens. Always older and at the point where having children might not be a possibility anymore. Their childlessness is part of the tension. A teenager would never have that.

      • PortlandJan says:

Actually, Macbeth was not that old. He had married Gruach, the widow of a cousin, when he was only 31 or 32; Gruach herself is believed to have been somewhere in her mid or late twenties at the time of her remarriage to Macbeth. Gruach had had a son, Lulach, from her first marriage who became the next King of Scots. Lulach was assassinated by Duncan’s son, giving Macbeth a claim to the throne via his stepson.
When Macbeth succeeded Duncan on the throne in 1040 (he killed him in battle, not under his own roof) he was still only about 34-35. He ruled for 17 years and is regarded as a much better king than Duncan had been.
I would love to see Lady Macbeth be played by Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet or Helena Bonham Carter. Any one of these three would bring more fire to the role.

  36. BengalCat2000 says:

I agree with a previous comment that Eva Green would be a great choice. Stunning & haunted at the same time. Otherwise Tilda or Cate should be cast. I’ve always liked N.P. but I don’t think she has what it takes to play such an iconic character.

  37. Isabella says:

Ugh. She’s so pretty (hence my mild jealousy 😉 but as an actress, overrated…? I guess I’m not a fan.

  38. luludelafalaise says:

« Clive Owen could have sexual chemistry with a lamp post. And that lamp post would get pregnant too. »

    HA! made my day!

  39. Stacia says:

They just tossed this one in the trash, because I see no chemistry between the two. Fassbender…HOT!…loved him in Jane Eyre. Portman …has no depth to play this role…just looks.

  40. OhDear says:

Ehh… I can see where they were going with this casting. However, she’d be more suited for a modern adaptation where she’d play a stereotypical Stepford Wife or more Tracey Flick-ish interpretation (see also Reese Witherspoon), not a period piece.

  41. Seanner says:

Ugh. Portman lacks the presence required to play Lady MacBeth. A decade ago Courtney Love was cast in a film adaptation of MacBeth that was being produced by Luc Besson, but it never got filmed. Now THAT is inspired casting. Courtney can play crazy. I agree that Cate and Tilda would be amazing in the role. I think Nicole Kidman would be great as well. I know most of you guys just focus on the Botox, but Kidman is a fantastic actress.

    • ??? says:

Mmmhmm. Lady Macbeth is such a rich role that requires an actress who can play the part with immense depth.
I don’t care if she’s won an Oscar — Portman simply doesn’t have the chops.

  42. Dawn says:

Oh I don’t know how to feel about it. Obviously the director wanted her. I just saw the Black Swan and thought that Mila was so much better than she was but she won the Oscar. We shall see what she can pull out I guess. But I agree that sometimes she is just boring.

    • Christina says:

I disagree. Kunis was embarrassingly bad. A poor man’s Angelina Jolie.

  43. Ginger says:

Clive Owen in Closer…I didn’t hear anything else after you mentioned that! He was delicious in that film!

  44. Ginger says:

    Definite ugh!

  45. Patty says:

No, just no. Portman cannot act and it will be painfully obvious opposite Fassbender. And this is probably blasphemous around these parts but am I the only one who thinks that Portman is pretty but not all that. Don’t get me wrong she is pretty very pretty, but I’ve never understood the argument that she is the most ridiculously gorgeous stunning woman on the planet.

    • Me says:

You are not the only one, Patty. You are not the only one. And while I think she’s a pretty girl – sorry, WOMAN (insert eyeroll) – I see countless women to whom she couldn’t hold a candle in the looks department on a daily basis where I live.

  46. ya says:

I’m obviously very in the minority but I’m curious about how she would play Lady M… She’s not necessarily an obvious choice.

Though I do think she’s too young – or looks too young at least – for the role.

  47. MOPine says:

Hmm. I’m thinking Portman is not a bad choice. I’m not agreeing with the majority who believe she is a ‘terrible’ actress. I think she can pull this off. I’d watch the film no matter who played the female lead- I’m a Fassbender fan.

  48. Sway says:

    A big UGH.
She’s a terrible actress, annoying voice and presence. Also, she did the worst portrayal of Anne Boleyn EVER and I’ll never forgive her for that.

  49. vanessaw says:

I like nicole kidman in this one. Tilda is good too. No natalie portman tho! I only liked her in garden state.

  50. Me says:

She’s ruined this for me. Not even my love for Fass can bring me to watch this disaster in the making. And not to repeat my sentiment from yesterday’s post but why is she following him around from flick to flick like some desperate stalker? Doesn’t this ‘cold bowl of oatmeal’ (as I heard her described on another site) have a husband and child? Fassbender’s infinite talents cannot complement hers. They’ll only magnify the fact that she has none at all.

  51. silver says:

ugh, she’s an ungrateful bitch. she came into the restaurant I worked at years ago, gave everybody this snotty stink eye, rolled her eyes at my manager (who was super nervous & acting all starstruck like a total idiot, I admit). Portman had lunch, then left a $1.20 tip on a $30 bill. it’s a really fancy place to eat in an expensive town on Long Island (in which she used to live). even though all 3 of the waiters & even the manager served her & made sure everything was perfect, she left $1.20 tip on a $30 bill. they were like wtf? so much for being starstruck lol. whatever, I can’t stand her now.

  52. allons-y alonso says:

A piece of driftwood can be a better Lady Macbeth than Natalie Portman.

  53. Ally8 says:

Total ugh. Let’s all recall what a disaster it was the last time Portman played royalty (Princess Wooden in ‘Star Wars’). I liked someone’s suggestion the other day of Andrea Riseborough.

Back in the day, ‘Elizabeth’ was a hit with no big-name American stars. Make a quality production and it will work.

I hope they don’t overdo the battle scenes, though. This killed the ‘King Arthur’ with Clive Owen a while back.

Macbeth is really a bit of an impressionable meathead. His wife is the catalyst of the story… needs a woman, not this squeaky-voiced git.

    • ??? says:

Hey now! Don’t forget Portman’s riveting performance in The Other Boleyn Girl. If her Lady Macbeth is anything like this, we’re all in for a real treat! (I’m being sarcastic, btw.) 🙂

  54. magpie says:

As much as I love me some Tilda, she is too old here. Kate winslet would have been good.

  55. amilu says:

Ugh. I’m still not convinced she can act.

  56. Jamik123 says:

She can’t do even a simple english accent, how can she pull of scottish? The only americans actors who are good at doing brit/irish/cockeny/scottish accents are Angelina Jolie, RDJ, Johnny Depp and Elijah Wood. Natalie Portman sucks, what a bad choice for Lady Macbeth. They should have gone with Eva Green or Emily Blunt. They are dark, mysertious beautuies and could proably play evil well. Natallie still looks like she is 12 despite marrying a Ballet K-fed. I hope they change the actress for this.

  57. Senia says:

    @ Luccretia
Wrong. Sure Benjamen Millipiede is a talented dancer. But why do people ignore the fact that he gets all these oppertunties and PR because of Natalie Portman? Don’t you find it odd how he dumped his live girlfirend of 4 years for Natalie Portman? Who he barely knew at the time? He is after her money and connections. Thats all. I don’t buy that he fell in love with her and all. And Natalie really could have done alot better then this guy. He is not a good looking guy at all. I am sure he could have been the director of Paris Opera Ballet one day, but this early? No. Its all for PR. He also got a YSL through Natalie. He is climbung up the ladder.
Also, he has used many girls. There is something off about the guy.
Also, he is a no name af far as I know. Ballet Dancers are not celebs or stars.
