Bristol Palin can’t catch a break

2008 Republican National Convention: Day 3

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has decided to send a bitchy little gift to Bristol Palin, daughter of Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Bristol just gave birth to son Tripp, and PETA has sent her a vegetarian-themed onesie reading “Give Peas a Chance”. PETA is just following up on it’s long line of publicity-seeking stunts, but this time it just feels like they’re kicking a young woman when she’s down. Bristol’s not only got a newborn to deal with, but her boyfriend, Levi Johnston just lost his job on the oil rig, and his mother is a wreck. At this time, I can’t help but think that PETA’s just being too mean.

New mom Bristol Palin and son Tripp are about to receive a snarky baby gift from PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Group spokesperson Michelle Cho says that since Sarah and Todd Palin “never met an animal they didn’t like — to eat or shoot” PETA is sending a onesie bodysuit that says “Give Peas a Chance” and a bib with the slogan “Animals Are My Friends.”

“Tripp will inherit a kinder and more compassionate world than the one his grandparents cling to,” Cho wrote in a note. “There is a growing consciousness among people everywhere of how our actions affect those around us, including animals. Helping children understand that animals are living, feeling beings who deserve to be treated with respect and compassion will help them grow up to be kind, compassionate citizens.”

Little skirmishes with veggie activists aside, the Palin family isn’t doing so well. Monday, Bristol’s future mother-in-law pleaded not guilty to six felony counts of selling Oxycontin. Lots of people guessed incorrectly that Mrs. Johnston was dealing crystal meth, so I’m not sure if a federally regulated substance like Oxycontin is a step up. To make matters worse, there’s reporting that the arrest of Levi Johnston’s mother Sherry was delayed for “political reasons”, though Gov. Palin’s office is denying it.

A drug investigator says authorities delayed the arrest of a woman tied to Gov. Sarah Palin’s family until after the November election, in which Palin was the Republican vice presidential candidate, a newspaper reported.

Sherry Johnston — whose son Levi Johnston is engaged to Palin’s daughter, Bristol — was arrested Dec. 18 on six felony drug counts. She is accused of selling Oxycontin, a strong prescription painkiller, and pleaded not guilty Monday.

Investigator Kyle Young sent an e-mail to the Public Safety Employees Association saying the search warrant of Johnston’s house was delayed for political reasons, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

“It was not allowed to progress in a normal fashion, the search warrant WAS delayed because of the pending election and the Mat Su Drug Unit and the case officer were not the ones calling the shots,” Young wrote in the Dec. 30 e-mail.

The warrant was delivered the same day as Sherry Johnston’s arrest. Public Safety Commissioner Joe Masters insisted the case was handled fairly and said no one in the governor’s office knew troopers were investigating until Sherry Johnston’s house was searched.

The scandals surrounding the Palins are a little mind-blowing, but I still hold on to the idea that Bristol should be left alone. Obviously, her boyfriend’s family and her own mother have their issues. Hopefully, Bristol is happily settled with her baby and just zoning everything else out.

Post-preggo hormones are enough of an issue to deal with… I don’t like her mom, but poor Bristol needs to be left alone.

  2. Keely says:

    Yay right.
You know that baby was eating pulled pork the moment it popped out.

  3. Ellen Smith says:

Not pulled pork – stalked, hunted and gunshot moose, for heaven’s sake.

  4. deka says:

    peta should leave everyone alone

  5. Ling says:

The “Give Peas A Chance” onesie in my family was worn by all the children at the appropriate age. We thought it was hilarious. Too bad Peta’s using it passive-aggressively.

  6. Annie says:

    Hilarious Shirt? Agreed.

And you know, I can’t stand the Palins, I think they’re a bunch of inbred, hypocritical, ignorant morons who aren’t fit to clean any president’s shoes, let alone have Sarah be the second in command.

With that said, I do agree that PETA should leave Bristol alone. I’m all for animal rights and I disagree with the Palin lifestyle (on many counts, but for this case, the hunting part) but I think PETA’s behavior is rather deplorable.

  7. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa says:

I don’t think what PETA did was that bad, but I do feel bad for Bristol. It should serve as a cautionary tale, if anything, for young girls who fail to act responsibly and end up biting off a lot more than they can chew. I’m sure she’ll weather the storm though. Best of luck to her….

  8. boomchakaboom says:

Given Palin’s somewhat sketchy family dynamics, it’s a bit surprising to me that she would launch herself, and them, into the national spotlight like she did. Until McCain got to her she was pretty much unheard of outside Alaska. I’m sure they’re all so glad to be reported on constantly these days. ESPECIALLY these days. You just can’t make this stuff up.

  9. Codzilla says:

Bristol doesn’t deserve to be hated by anyone. She’s just a kid caught up in her mother’s shit storm, and she should be allowed to raise her child in peace.

  10. SW says:

PETA is a PITA I think. While I am an abosolute animal lover, I also am an animal EATER and also an ex-HUNTER (yeah, I’m female as well). I only agree with hunting as long as you are going to eat your kill, I don’t agree with killing animals for trophies. I grew up eating wild meats – hunting ran in my family, eating wild meat ran in my family. I do understand it isn’t for everyone, I do understand some people don’t condone it, I do understand some people simply don’t understand it themselves but you know, to each their own. Why try to shove your beliefs or values down someone else’s throat??

  12. Annie says:

Hunting for survival is one thing…hunting for sport and ’til a species’ near extinction is another, especially in this day and age where we don’t need to be hunter gatherers to survive.

But we do agree on this point SW, and that is that people shouldn’t try to shove anything down anyone’s throat. Free will and freedom of choice, what a beautiful thing.

  13. SW says:

I agree with you, Annie, to a point. There are some people out there who actually DO need to be hunters to survive – I’m talking about people who live in the US as well. Unfortunately, with the economy in the shape it is now, some people who were once considered middle-class people (perhaps even upper middle-class) have been stumped down to the ‘poor’ class. So think…the folks who were considered to be in the poor class to begin with, wow, what kind of shape are in they in now? So yeah, there are some people out there who have to hunt for their meals, I’m pretty sure of this.
Growing up, no, we didn’t HAVE to hunt to have dinner on our table. My father was brought up that way – out in the woods before dawn with his rifle. Setting out rabbit boxes. He raised me up the same way (perhaps because he didn’t have a son?). Wild game tastes nothing like meat from a hog or a cow, etc…totally different. You can’t go into a regular grocer and find that flavor, thus the reason for finding it yourselves in the woods. I stopped hunting when I was around 16. The reason why is really too gruesome to go into here…lets just say I finally saw the beauty in those animals. And I just couldn’t bring myself to raise a gun to them again.
Now…fishing…I don’t think I could ever give that up. Especially living on the west coast of Florida!

  14. melonie says:

I love PETA! Thank God there are people getting off their asses and doing something for animals! Hooray Peta!

P.S. My favorite movie is the one where the hunter accidentally shoots themself trying to shoot the animal! Instant karma!

  15. Dingles says:

Just another example of why pressuring teenage girls to keep their babies is a shit idea.

  16. barneslr says:

PETA is an organization unworthy of respect. They need to leave her, and everyone else, alone. They are borderline terrorists with some of their actions and just plain stupid with others.

  17. boomchakaboom says:

SW, there are many people where I live who literally would go hungry if not for what they kill during hunting season and fishing. Well-off people hunt for sport, the rest hunt for necessity. It’s a way of life that most urbanites are very unfamiliar with, but it’s reality for many.

I’ve worked for Human Services and had people bring in receipts for pelts they had trapped and sold as proof of income in order to qualify for Food Stamps. It never even crossed their minds to lie about their income like it does to the more ‘sophisticated’ which somehow gave their entire being a kind of dignity that their appearance would never indicate. I dunno, it touched me.

Anyhoodle, that’s why PETA would never fly in this part of the country. They’d be toted out on a rail pretty quick.

  18. cara says:

I’m about ready to go all Papua New Guinea on all PETA members asses. I am so sick of them and their antics.

  19. SW says:

Boom – that’s what I was trying to get across. And yeah, the rich do hunt for sport and I find that disgusting. I grew up in the ‘woods’ of NC. I probably grew in my first teeth gnawing on squirrel, bbq’d rabbit or deer (sorry if I offended anyone). Like you said, it is, without a shadow of a doubt, a way of life for a lot of folks. And you know, those kind of folks are the best kind to have around when you need something. Thats the honest truth. They might be back-wood hicks…but they sure would give you the shirt off their backs.
I’m so laughing of the image I got – PETA folks tied down to the hood of a pick-up or across the top of a dog box! I sure needed a laugh today, thanks Boom! 😉

  20. KateNonymous says:

As PETA stunts go, this one isn’t too bad. At least there’s nothing graphic about it. But it does seem like kicking someone when she’s down. Regardless of how well she is or isn’t doing, Bristol already has a lot to deal with.

But then, PETA’s stunts aren’t really about the recipient anyhow. They’re about getting PETA’s names in the news, and using other people to do that.

  21. Holly says:

PETA could have done much, much worse but I agree that they’re being heavy handed. I’d hate to be in Bristol’s position and get dragged into all this because I was born to a moron for a mother.

  22. Joolzz says:

I totally get the hunting for food and survival. I can’t stand fur for fashion, and caging little animals for this purpose….so PETA should just focus on that issue, instead of hunting for meats.

  23. boomchakaboom says:

    SW, 😉

  24. bros says:

i doubt bristol palin has the foggiest idea of what PETA is in the first place, so i don’t feel that bad for her right now. this will pass. i agree with subsistence hunting: I grew up in Alaska and many members of my family hunt and we ate everything we hunted, freezing meat for the winter, etc. the palins eat what they hunt as well, it sounds like, with the HUGE and GLARING exception of sarah’s support for aerial hunting of wolves, which is insupportable, disgusting, sadistic, and pointless.

i am, however, delighted that Levi lost his job. he technically, by law, was not supposed to be able to have the job he did as an electricians apprentice on the north slope, because legally, he would have to have his GED, which he does not. mommy-in law dearest helped him skirt those requirements, since she loves pushing her gubernatorial weight around and bending rules for personal gain.

  25. Starla says:

At this point, PETA is doing more harm than good with the crap they pull.

  26. irl says:

Personally I can’t stomach Sarah Palin and wish she would fade from the spotlight.
As for Bristol she’s a typical teen in a typical situation and the dumb things going on around her aren’t the end of the world. I seriously don’t get this sympathy for Bristol at all.

I don’t hate on her for any reason but I don’t pity her either.
I don’t feel she has anything worse to deal with then any other teen in her position.
With such National notoriety, PETA and who ever else sending her gifts – she is probably better off then most teens.
At least her Mom didn’t kick her out for getting knocked up – many girls do or they run away our of fear or they toss the baby in the trash hoping no one knew they were knocked up.

Seems to me Bristol has plenty of family support, her community and her church all there for her. She made a dumb choice like many women do. . . to pick a good lookin’ loser. . . and/or get knock up too young – but oh well, it happens everyday all over the world. Even the almighty Sarah Palin couldn’t keep that from happening.
So what – her life isn’t over – her faith keeps her strong and her family praises her choices.

She’s born and raised a Palin. . .why would she be ashamed of her Mom or be any different then her family and what they value? I bet if anyone were to say any thing against her Mom, her man, her family or her man’s family she’d side with her family and show her Palin colors. I doubt she’d accept all this pity for her and the remarks on how terrible her Mom or her man is.

  27. Danielle says:

It’s so much easier to be snarky and judgmental than it is to be compassionate and understanding. Is it any wonder why the world is the way it is?

  28. Annie says:

Hunting issue aside, because I think we can agree that while killing for sport is terrible….sometimes, you have to do what you have to do. If it were me and my options were killing a deer or letting my kids starve, you bet I’d be shooting bambi down so fast.

Yes, Bristol is a typical modern day American Teen, sort of. And it’s kinda sad that this is what is being okayed today.

That being said, the pregnant at 18 part is probably where the similarities end between your average teen and Bristol Palin.

Cuz you bet your butt that she’s probably getting a TON of random help from people all over this nation and I can name a dozen girls from my HS that got pitchforks instead of silver forks. (haha, play on silver spoons, get it?)

  29. vdantev says:

Awwwww….. poor little rich girl. I feel so sorry- not.

  30. NotBlonde says:

Bristol Palin shouldn’t be “left alone”. The dummy got pregnant and now she has to deal with the consequences. Her idiot of a mother was shoving her in the public eye and now any group wanting attention is going to reference her or send her something.

PETA can do and has done much much worse when it comes to their ridiculous antics. Sending her a bib and a onesie with a note about how animals are wonderful creatures blah blah blah is extremely tame. I don’t get why you think they are attacking her or should “leave her alone”.

  31. Nouvel says:

THANK YOU PETA !!!! If you all saw what happens to these poor defenseless animals who are often beaten, and skinned alive you WOULD NOT be so ignorant as to write such shameful things. THERE IS NO REASON in this world to torture an animal !! It is disgusting and barbaric and PETA has to do these things to get the public’s attention and stop these horrific events !!!!!! wake up, it happens EVERYDAY.. just because you don’t see an animal being abused and tortured, doesnt mean it doesnt happen.. trust me, it does and it is absolutely heart wrenching.. THANK YOU PETA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Bodhi says:

I can’t stand Bristol’s mother, but I do think that she should be left alone. I mean, it isn’t her fault that her mom shoved her & her situation in the spotlight.

As for PETA, I hate ’em

  33. aleach says:

i feel bad for bristol just beacuse of how her mom shoved them into the spotlight & which pretty much forced her to announce to the world that she was 17 & pregnant.
    how humiliating.
if peta wants to send stuff to anyone in the palin family, it should be sarah & todd.

  34. Bodhi says:

Exactly Al. I’d hate my mom if she did that to me

  35. Judy says:

Bodhi you would hate your mom if she did this to you, well would your mom hate you for embarrassing the whole damn family by going out and getting your self knocked up at 17? Letting the whole world know that you have no morals or class and were busy with your legs in the air in the back seat of a car without protection??
Kids who get knocked up bring embarrassment to themselves, no one has to do it for them.

  36. Tony says:

That girl’s tits are outta control! Dayumn!

  37. aleach says:

wow judy, sounds like youve never once made a mistake in your life, eh? especially when you were a teenager?
lucky you…(im rolling my eyes, just so you know)

  38. Rebecca says:

PETA are idiots who try to sell respect for animals by using disrespect for women as a tactic.

  39. Rebecca says:

Hey Judy, oftentimes it is the guy wearing protection, but you’re not talking about her boyfriend having his legs up in the air. It takes two. Nice double standard you’ve got going on there.

  40. kelo says:

They sold pictures of the new baby to People Magazine for 300k – they hardly want to “fade away”. And the boyfriend quit his job on the rig. I guess they figure they can make the easy way = one pic at a time.

Now it will be interesting to find out if the baby is really his. Word on the street, it’s not.

  41. RaraAvis says:

She’s just another kid with a kid. Leave her alone, PETA. Stop shoving your beliefs down our throats. If you don’t want to eat animals, then don’t.

  42. Aspen says:

I would rather every single person in this country begin hunting their meat than have them continue to buy it from the grocery store.

    PLEASE. Read and think.

I know a lot of you are vegetarian, but for those that choose to eat meat…but like to diss on hunters and hunting…you should really stop doing that.

MOST hunters, and by most, I mean a vast majority, hunt for food. They kill their prey cleanly and humanely. They use every single last BIT of the meat from the animal when they have it butchered.

The lives of the animals they hunt are led in the wild. The animals they hunt are free and living as nature intended until the moment they are shot.

That is NOT the life the cows, pigs, and chickens that provide non-hunters with their meat get to live.

The next time you use store-bought animal flesh of any species to cook with in your home…remember that (unless you buy NOTHING but carefully-chosen products from select and specific organic family farming coops that use humane farming practices) you are participating in institutionalized animal torture and perpetuating a cycle of revolting cruelty and misery to animals that makes you MUCH more guilty of animal rights violations than any hunter in this nation. Add to that the environmental atrocities and disaster that are spread by industrial meat farming in this country, and we should all collectively hang our heads in shame as a nation.

Read. Know what you’re eating. And keep your judgments to yourself unless you know what you’re talking about.

Watching Bambi does not impart a knowledge of what hunting is.

PETA is a bunch of idiots that run around with adolescent rages and passions. They damage animal rights every single day with their thoughtless and ignorant, bellicose activities.

Their antics are a primary reason that people roll their eyes when educated and effective animal activists try to educate the public.

  43. brista says:

    Tripp?

I thought that was the name of one of her brothers? The baby one? Interesting names in that family. Though I do think Bristol is a pretty name but I guess I’m slanted towards any name that starts with a “bri”. 😀

Also, I don’t think PETA’s move was particularly malicious. Sending someone a baby shirt and a bib then issuing a press release that they sent it is kind of slimy (mostly because of the press release part) but it’s not like anyone is really expecting Palin & Co to pick up the vegan torch, what with that whole ‘hunting from helicopters’ thing. I thought the article was about PETA dumping paint or something on their fur-lined parkas or that creepy bear rug in Governess’ Palin’s office.

  44. nicolas says:

You ridiculous morons (Aspen, Notblonde, Cara) seem to really know what you’re talking about apart the fact that “antics” like you say make no sense in your sentences, were you thinking of “ethics”, which makes more sense..?

Funny 3 different people trying to give lessons to other people make the same grotesque mistakes.

    losers !

  45. Joe says:

Everyone seems to hate this young girl and yet she has done nothing to anyone. She made a mistake and is dealing with it. Should she have had an abortion? Is that what this is all about? You all wish she had just killed her baby?
I realize that some of you are just immature and hate Bristol Palin because you know deep down that her mother is more qualified to be President than the idiot you elected, but lets be fair about the attacks here shall we. No-one seems to be commenting on those two beastly kids of the Obama’s. Stupid names aside, those are two of the most ugly little kids I’ve ever seen.

  46. Henny Penny says:

I think the onesie gift PETA sent is cute! Lord knows those hillbilly teens are gonna need all the money they have to bail out momma- so it’s godsend for them to receive a free onesie. Oh wait, maybe momma Palin already looted tons of them from Saks, so they’re already all set. Oh well, it’s the thought that counts, eh?

  47. Henny Penny says:

Someone please give Joe the racist hillbilly award of the day. Thanks!

  48. NotBlonde says:

Nicolas: You must be a PETA member. Or you know absolutely nothing about PETA. On my campus they camped out for three or four days . Naked girls in cages. Another harassed me about wearing leather boots and called me a bitch for wearing them. They also staged a “Holocaust” scene that was quickly dismantled by my campus PD.

PETA pulls a lot of stunts. You are probably a member so this message will probably fall on deaf ears but whatever.

  49. virginia girl says:

PETA used to come in at lunch time at my high school to pass out these fliers with pictures of ripped up animal carcasses and such.

what made me angry about that is that I live in the Appalachian mountains and there is a lot of poverty in this area. School lunch is sometimes the only complete meal some of these kids will get in the day. And yes, a lot of them hunt for their food. We get the first week of hunting season off because so many kids skip school anyway. It isn’t for bloody sport; it’s for survival. Not to mention the deer population is killing both itself and other populations off by consuming any green tissue it can find. Like it or not we’re part of the ecological cycle too.
