Keira Knightley married James Righton in a low-key ceremony in France

Keira Knightley is a married lady! I kept seeing stories about Keira’s pre-wedding activities last week but I never got around to writing about them because I didn’t think anyone would care that much. It’s not really all that scandalous, you know? Keira dated Rupert Friend for years (and I’m currently in love with Rupert because of Homeland) and then as soon as they broke up, she got with James Righton. James and Keira were together for (I think) less than a year before he popped the question, and this wedding came after a pretty normal amount of time for an engagement. She’s 28, he’s 29. They’re both English. They seem pretty normal. So… I’m actually kind of happy that Keira managed to do all of this without any drama. They got married in France, and the bride wore Chanel (you can see a photo of her dress here).

Keira Knightley is no bridezilla. On Saturday, May 4, the Anna Karenina actress married Klaxons keyboardist James Righton, and according to the Daily Mail, there was little ado over the “I dos.” The couple kept things very low-key, exchanging vows in an intimate ceremony in the south of France before just a dozen or so of their closest friends and family, the Mail reports.

Pictures of the happy occasion show the Oscar-nominated star, 28, leaving the Mazan Town Hall hand-in-hand with her new husband, 29, as guests cheer them into a waiting silver Renault Clio. Knightley — in a simple but elegant short, strapless tulle dress with pink flats, a cropped Chanel jacket, and a daisy-chain garland atop her shoulder-length brown tresses — looks radiant and relaxed.

“It was a very moving ceremony,” an onlooker told the Daily Mail. “Keira looked extremely moved by the whole thing — there were certainly tears of happiness.”

According to the Mail, the newly minted husband and wife will celebrate with a slightly bigger party on Saturday night, at Knightley’s mother’s home a few miles outside Mazan. Righton’s band is expected to perform for the 50 or so guests, rumored to include actress Sienna Miller. The couple also reportedly plan to throw a second bash once they return to Britain.

This is the first marriage for both the Klaxons rocker and the Pride and Prejudice star, who previously dated actor Rupert Friend for five years. Their romance went public in April 2011, when they were photographed kissing in an East London park. A little more than a year later, in May 2012, Righton proposed.

“He can turn into this lovestruck puppy around her,” a mutual pal told Us Weekly last year, adding that the rocker’s friends encouraged him to pop the question. “Honestly, they’re good for each other.”

Speaking about her wedding plans in November, Knightley confessed to being slightly overwhelmed by the whole thing. “The problem is, ever since [the engagement] happened, everyone keeps going…’So when is it going to happen, and what’s the dress like?'” the star told Ellen DeGeneres. “I’m just not one of those girls that’s had the kind of fantasy wedding thing, so we haven’t planned anything, and it’s all quite terrifying.”

“I sort of looked up on the Internet…if you’re getting married, what should you do…” she continued. “I really don’t have a clue. I don’t get what the big deal is. You say ‘I do’…You drink a bit…On the Internet, they keep talking about…There are things like bridal tea parties. I mean, what is a bridal tea party? I’ve never had a tea party in my life.”

“The whole thing is kind of quite confusing, I think,” she confessed.

What I really like is that she didn’t freak out at all when the UK tabloids pretty much revealed her wedding date and her wedding plans in France. It all seemed very no muss, no fuss. Maybe Keira really is the low-key cool girl that people always claim she is. Anyway, congrats to Keira and James! I hope they last a long time.

    Congrats!

They seem really into each other, so cute.

    • ya says:

Ya they make a cute couple – saw the wedding pics and they were also cute, in a very hipster way.

She and her ex were gorgeous together though!

  2. Rita says:

These two look really good together, very natural. Congrats and hope this last with lots of love and happiness.

  3. LAK says:

Loved how unfussy the entire thing looked.

    Adorable.

  4. Anmelt says:

She really bugs me in her movies (mostly period, object of desire…not much else) but she is gorgeous and her skin is amazing. She does seem very grounded in the same way Emma Watson is. Good on her.

    • Leek says:

I was never a fan of hers either but if you’d like to give her one more chance try watching Last Night if you haven’t yet. I fell in love with her when I saw that movie. The low key wedding solidified my like for her.

I’ve seen pictures from the preparations and from the wedding day and I really love how comfortable it all looked. She wore flats, her dress was very simple and just perfect for the weather and for dancing/whatever activities they had in minds, and they looked like they were having a blast even during the preparations the day before – like a bunch of friends just casually met to hang decorations on the trees. Not to mention what a perfect day that was – the beginning of may, when everything blooms and the air smells just wonderful – my dream wedding scenerio (if I will ever get married). It’s completely atypical not only for celebrities but also for the “normal” people who take huge loans to pay for the big, pompous ceremonies and than regret it because how can you enjoy yourself when you are sweating in a ball gown with layers and layers of tulle and the only thing you care about is what others think about the whole thing?

    • EscapedConvent says:

I agree. A wedding should be a happy occasion! This gets lost in all the fussy preparations, pomp & circumstance.

It ought to be a party. This does sound like what Keira said she wanted.

  6. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Her husband looks like Michael K from D listed and Perez Hilton had a love child 😳

    • TG says:

That’s what I always think when I see him that he looks exactly like Perez Hilton and for that reason I find him gross. She is such a beauty and I love her in her movies. I also loved the dress she wore. I guess I am projecting on her since I always think of her as some aristocratic lady from the 19th Century, because I think she should be with a real man and not some grungy looking boy but if he is nice and they are happy together then good for her.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I liked her in The Jacket with Adrien Brody, but I haven’t seen her in anything else besides the pirates franchise (and that role wasn’t much for her to work with). I do know what you mean about her appearing to be a proper English lady though. She really does exude class and elegance.

  7. Maya says:

Congratulations to them! In every picture I’ve seen of them together Keira looks so happy. I love her wedding dress too.

  8. Liz says:

    Her wedding dress is lovely.

  9. janie says:

Her wedding dress was so cute!

  10. Myrto says:

I like Keira, she seems so normal, in a good way. No fuss indeed.
And I totally agree with her on not getting what the big deal is about marriage.

  11. j.eyre says:

Mazel Tov! They both looked lovely.

  12. Glaughy says:

    She is so gorgeous.

    I hate her. (not really)

  13. brin says:

Love the way they tied the knot…nice, quiet, very low key. They seem very much in love…congrats!!

  14. Jo says:

Love it! My wedding was the same way…found my dress (BCBG) on sale, there were six guest and the ceremony was under 15 mins. When you love someone you just get it done…but to each their own…no shade towards those who spend small fortunes and plan it for months and months….everyone is entitled to their dream wedding.

  15. Renee says:

    A really nice story.

  16. Annette says:

He looks like Perez Hilton. Yikes.

  17. Dedrie says:

    Something very dopey about this..

  18. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

I feel sad she and Rupert are not together. They looked like a great love affair. This guy is a real comedown in comparison and feels like a rebound. Don’t know how she could even touch him after having someone as beautiful as Rupert, feels all wrong. I’ve always liked her, wish her well.

I happen to think low-key weddings are seriously under-rated.

We got married barefoot on the beach where we had our first date and later got engaged, and we were with our Pastor, my parents, my children, and a few close friends.

It was exactly what we wanted, and it was lovely!

    • Amelia says:

      ^^^
This right here – my dream wedding scenario.
I get anxious at the thought of walking down a massive aisle with scores of people watching.

      • the original bellaluna says:

        Do it your way, Amelia!

We got some interesting looks from beach-goers (it was June in SoCal; I was in a heavily-beaded halter wedding dress [it sounds bad, but it was GLORIOUS!]; he was in Tommy Bahama, and we had to hoof it to the “right” location) but it was totally worth it.

And we announced it in the church bulletin the following Sunday. (People were TICKED!)

      • lrm says:

yea we got married at sunset in maui, with 11 guests, and then took everyone out for a great dinner at a nice restaurants….weeks later we had a party stateside for people who could not make the main event. So glad we did it that way b/c i wanted to remember and enjoy the day and i personally would have been out of body with a huge affair. to each their own, it’s true.

  20. T says:

    Super cute dress.

  21. Tig says:

Loved her dress and the setting was so pretty. Hope they are happy now and for a long time to come!

  22. LilyRose says:

No snark here. She looked great and happy.

  23. Zigggy says:

    Beautiful- love the dress 🙂

  24. jilly says:

I’m very happy for her and for the fact that she seemed to have a real wedding and not just something for People magazine. Kudos to them both.

  25. m says:

Im in love with her entire look! Since neither are French citizens, this was probably just the required civil ceremony and the bigger wedding was last night. Either way it looked beautiful, congrats to them.

    • Chinoiserie says:

I wondered about that too and if there really was another dress I would love to see it, this dress is really lovely but since she has worn it before it`s likely this was not the only dress.

  26. KellyinSeattle says:

Love her dress! She is so tiny….also, Jen and Justin, Kim and Kayne, if you’re going to get married, take note. A huge wedding does not necessarily…equate with class or taste…I’d be thrilled to hear that Jen and Justin tied the know this way, but it probably won’t happen!

  27. Reece says:

Congrats to them. They look very cute!

  28. JLo says:

She looks beautiful and I’m all for a low-key wedding. But is it bad luck to recycle a dress that you were photographed in with your long-term ex?

  29. amilu says:

When I first saw the photo of her in the wedding dress over on Pajiba, I thought she was Olivia Palermo (before I read the caption).

  30. blueanemone says:

the dress in the last picture is a dream

  31. lisa says:

i LOVE the short dress and jacket, despite being gorgeous and successful at a young age, she seems normal and unspoiled. she’s the anti cracken.

  32. Just Celebz says:

    Awww x Congrats!

  33. Luls says:

I love her face. Such a timeless beauty.

Her ex was way cuter than her now-husband though. Oh well, perhaps he’s a much better guy.

  34. Ally8 says:

Let’s spare a thought for Rupert Friend who must be a bit sad this weekend.

I always liked how their cheekbones matched.

  35. A says:

I wonder why Carey Mulligan wasn’t there.
Keira apparently wasn’t at Carey’s wedding either and they are (were?) supposedly friends.
    Wonder what happened.

  36. TheRealTea says:

Aw, good for them! She’s such a cutie 🙂

  37. Chinoiserie says:

Since when there has been this much news on a Sunday?

  38. Rufus says:

Does someone recognize the designer of the dress on the first picture- the one with the flowers?
    I really like it…
