‘Homeland’ season 3 trailer is soaked in Carrie Mathison’s tears (mild spoilers)

***********This post contains mild SPOILERS for the last two seasons of Homeland, and some very tame spoilers for the new season.

The very first trailer for the third season of Homeland has been released. Oddly enough, while I’m excited for the third season, I haven’t been waiting breathlessly for it like I was with the second season. The first season “cliffhanger” of Carrie about to undergo electro-shock therapy and just before she was shocked, she put the pieces together (“Issa!”) and the nurse didn’t hear her… that was an intense cliffhanger. Not so much with the second season, although there was so much more bloodshed and so much more drama. I guess part of the reason I haven’t been thinking about it so much is because I believe the conspiracy theories that Brody and Abu Nazir made a deal and Brody KNEW that his car was rigged when he drove into Langley, and that Brody was playing Carrie in their last moments together. If anything, I’m going to be watching Season 3 for Saul (OMG I LOVE SAUL) and Rupert Friend’s amazing, badass character Peter Quinn. Anyway, enough with the talking. Here’s the trailer:

The first part of the trailer is part of the end of season 2 – Carrie and Brody saying goodbye after she helped him flee America with falsified documentation. What do we learn from the rest of the trailer? Carrie still has significant mental health issues and it seems like she might be hospitalized again (and handcuffed at some point). It looks like Saul is being put in charge (or at least put in a higher position of power) at the CIA, although it also looks like Saul is going to be getting much of the blame from the Senate committee too. It looks like Peter Quinn is on the hunt for somebody… did Saul put him in charge of the hunt for Brody? Brody looks like he’s returned to the Middle East… maybe? He also looks like he’s in a jungle at some point. He also has a shaved head and lots of body damage, possibly from a CIA/Saul-ordered drone strike, perchance?

It also looks like my girl Sarita Choudhury has returned to Saul. Thank God. He needed her desperately. Disappointingly, it looks like we’re still going to have to spend some time with Brody’s family. I really hoped that part of the story would just fade away. But I guess we’re supposed to think that Dana is experimenting with Islam.

Oh, and co-creator Alex Gansa says that Brody isn’t in the first two episodes, but “it would be a betrayal to tell you when he does appear…His flight from America just made it impossible to incorporate in the first two episodes.” Interesting. Hopefully the lack of Brody will mean more Saul and Quinn.

Agreed, Saul is amazing and the character I most enjoy watching. I totally fell for Brody’s innocence (why would he stay in the building?). It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

    • Kate says:

Be prepared for Saul to be the bad guy. I don’t want to believe it, but I’m afraid that’s where they are going to go.

      • Sullivan says:

        No!!! Not my Saul.

      • littlestar says:

I’ve wondered many times if they were going to go there. They’ve given several hints to Saul potentially being a terrorist. I hope it’s not true because I adore his character.

      • Lilalis says:

Yes I also figured that. The lie detector test stated that he lied about smuggling the razor blade in the cell, I think that’s a loose end they will eventually pick up again.

That being said, I love Saul. I’m really excited for season 3! 🙂

      • Birdix says:

oh that would be awful. too much. (but if anyone could pull it off, that actor could…)

    • Pinky says:

No matter the movie, play, or TV show, Mandy Patinkin is the absolute greatest.

  2. Amelia says:

F*CK YEAH, PETER QUINN IS BACK!!

  3. chloe says:

I love this show, Saul is my favorite, but I agree I also like the Peter Quinn character, Brody’s family can hit the road.

    • Sassy says:

Totally agree. When I saw the daughter in the trailer I thought – groan, we have to put up with more teenage angst.

  4. Kate says:

Hmm, the same song is used in this X-files fan video and it’s far better than this professional trailer.

I’m SO excited for Homeland & Time Warner had better be bringing back Showtime by then! Stupid TWC.

  6. Shelly says:

All I know is that Time Warner has until Homeland premiers to figure their shit out! Otherwise I will have to say goodbye!

  7. E-v-E says:

ugh, trailer kinda sucked, that song as beautiful as it is, has been overused the past five years or so.. really hoped for something more dynamic and fresh from the producers. I don’t mind Brody family that much, but I see nothing but hate for the kids story arcs, so I also don’t understand why they don’t let that slowly go or push it to the background. In other news, Peter Quinn is hot. Saul rules, Carrie weeps, Brody is ambivalent yet again, only less intense. Nothing new really. They better bring their season 1 game on.

  8. littlestar says:

As much as I love summer, this makes me excited for fall to arrive! Homeland is just an all around amazing show. And Sail is my fav too. I hope he and his wife get back together in season 3.

  9. Franziska says:

wait, did it say when it’s coming back?! I cant hardly wait

  10. LilyRose says:

Last season was a mess. But the trailer looks promising, yet I don’t want to get my hopes up.

  11. Megan says:

Saul is the only reason I keep loving this show. I love him and Quinn too.

I am over Brody and frankly if he isn’t a bad guy then I will feel cheated, they need to leave him a terrorist way more interesting.

  12. JessSaysNo says:

Saul is definitely the bad guy. The lie detector. The glasses he gave to that woman terrorist who slit her wrists. The fact that he was on a ship when the CIA building was blown up… The fact he he was raised Jewish but resents it for never getting to live a “normal” childhood. So now he is a secret Muslim and terrorist. It’s obvious, sadly.

  13. Chutzpah says:

Seriously kill off these two and just make it all about Quinn and Saul!

  14. Mary says:

Really? One of THE most highly anticipated fall premieres and Showtime uses THAT song under the trailer? Ugh.

  15. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

    Need. More. Quinn.

I could slice fresh stawberries with his cheekbones.

  16. Mo says:

SAUL RULES! He definitely deserves an Emmy.

  17. Mo says:

Of course Breaking Bad was pretty damn gnarly also last night.
