Jon Hamm ‘has two large polyps on his vocal cords’, will undergo surgery

When Jon Hamm presented at the Emmys with Alec Baldwin, did you notice that little scratch in his throat? I did. I thought that Jon – being a sometime smoker, from what I know of him – had probably been out partying, drinking and smoking the night before and his voice was just extra scratchy. But as it turns out, it might be something more serious. According to Life & Style, January Jones was telling people that Jon is flying to Boston to undergo throat surgery after he recently started coughing up blood. YIKES.

Don Draper is going under the knife! Life & Style can reveal that Mad Men star Jon Hamm is set to have throat surgery in Boston next week.

“January Jones was talking about it at the Fox Emmys afterparty last night,” an insider tells Life & Style.

According to reports, the hunky 42-year-old star, who rocked a mountain man beard at the Emmys, has two large polyps on his vocal cords. When he recently — and allegedly — coughed up blood, that’s when he decided to finally get them checked out.

People who use their voices a great deal — like singers and actors — are prone to developing polyps.

Aside from the surgery talk, the insider says January was also overheard chatting with Jon about a fantasy football league.

“They were less interested in the ball and more excited about their fantasy league,” the source shares. “January was asking, ‘Who’s going on Monday night?'”

Despite being nominated for 12 awards, Mad Men went home empty-handed last night.

[From Life & Style]

Maybe the real story is that January Jones takes part in a fantasy football league? Because that’s very interesting. As for Jon and his polyps, that’s so scary. Adele had a similar problem, and I think she had her throat surgery in Boston too. Is Boston the medical destination for actors and singers with throat problems? Perhaps. Now, all that being said, I doubt Jon’s drinking and smoking helps matters.

Yikes, hope all goes well with the surgery.

  2. blue marie says:

that’s scary, hope he has a speedy recovery.

  3. Bopit says:

I’ll take care of you Jon… I will caress your beard and feed you homemade soup.

    • anet says:

plus one million. but seriously that is awful. wow and i feel so guilty making fun of him sometimes. what if it’s cancer?? he’s a smoker no?

  4. Esmom says:

I noticed the scratchiness too and chalked it up to excessive partying too!

Wishing him a full and speedy recovery. I know someone who had that procedure recently and the most challenging part was having to be completely silent for an entire week afterwards. I’d think some people would hate that but others might enjoy it, wonder which camp Hamm is in?

Did you all notice that this season on MadMen Don’s voice was different? He sounded worn out. I thought Jon was doing it on purpose for his character but maybe not.

      • Esmom says:

I did but I honestly thought it was part of his brilliant performance. The decline of Don, including the physical aspects, was fascinating and horrifying to watch this past season. Like a train wreck.

I tell you I just can’t look at Jennifer Westfelt’s face. She has jacked that baby up so much she makes Nicole Kidman look natural.

  6. eliza says:

Westfeldt needs to cool it on the fillers. Her face is entering scary territory.

  7. Talie says:

He’s got a certain tone to his voice that suggested some stress was happening on his vocal chords. I noticed it the last few season on Mad Men. There’s a big difference from the first two seasons.

  8. MediaMaven says:

I recently had throat surgery, which resulted in vocal cord paralysis. I know the doctor he’s going to (unfortunately, he was not covered under MY health plan). Same guy that did Adele’s surgery. Jon is in the best hands money can buy. There is a very long recovery time (up to a year), The vocal cords control the voice, but more importantly, the breathing…….I wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

    • Vesta says:

Paralyzed vocal cords…Ouch. That surgery certainly doesn’t sound some easy-peasy procedure! I hope you’re feeling better now. And I wish that you, and Jon Hamm have a speedy recovery process and a successful final outcome.

      • MediaMaven says:

Thanks, Vesta! I couldn’t talk for months (at least, audibly). I’m still very vocally challenged. Luckily, I don’t work in an industry that needs a voice – but I couldn’t imagine how scary that would be for an actor. He’s in the best hands, tho. Couldn’t imagine Mad Men without that voice! 🙂

  9. emmie_a says:

He drinks, that’s for sure — But I don’t think he smokes. He used to smoke but gave it up in his 20’s. I know he’s mentioned that they use herbal cigarettes on set because he’s not a smoker in real life (plus they can’t smoke indoors).

  10. lucy2 says:

Wow, good luck to him. Has to be scary for an actor, or even worse a singer.

  11. Anon33 says:

I noticed it in the most recent round of Mercedes commercials.
    God he is beautiful.
I’m sorry I almost never do this but she is so budget looking!!! Her face is jacked and her hair…I mean you’re dating Jon Hamm!!! Get a better haircut!!! It looks like my mom’s hair in the 90s…

  12. Katie says:

I have also noticed his voice has changed over the years. Hoping for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

Also, Jon in that blue suit? HAWT.

  13. geekychick says:

Eh… polyps are not such a big deal. I had them at 18, they were in such a bad state that the only reason I didn’t go to surgery was bc my doctor thought I was too young. Speech/vocal cords therapy(I used my voice wrong!), few months of silence and I got my voice back. But, if I went under the knife, I’d get it back sooner, no consequences except that maybe I’d be more sensitive/prone to it.

  14. Tara says:

I heard him on an episode of Comedy Bang Bang about a month ago and he could barely talk, poor guy. I wish him a speedy recovery.

  15. JennyJustice says:

I just do not see the appeal with this man. Sorry folks, but just like Clooney this guy is doofy looking and takes himself way too seriously. And poor Jennifer’s posture is…seriously pitiful. I feel sorry for her. Him…he’s a good actor but he is NOT a hottie…imho.

    • anet says:

i agree on the persona part…but don’t you dare compare him to Clooney. He’s not that bad…yet. i need to stop. this news is awful.

  16. Itwillrain says:

I hope having the surgery will force him to shave that forest he has on his face…I find him so unattractive now because of that!!
