Paula Patton doesn’t get why people are making a ‘big deal’ of Twerky Cyrus

Here are some photos from last night’s premiere of Baggage Claim, Paula Patton’s new rom-com (she goes back to all of her exes to see if she if she’s already met “The One”). Paula wore this Rhea Costa Fall 2013 dress which… it’s fine. It’s okay. It looks sort of like a budget Elie Saab, which could totally be worse. Paula’s husband Robin Thicke was on the red carpet too, and they made a big show of posing together and acting lovey-dovey for the cameras. For what it’s worth, I think they probably are pretty lovey-dovey in real life. They just get some strange on the side.

Robin and Paula are both still talking about Twerky Cyrus and The Tongue of Doom, because of course they are. Even though Robin’s “Blurred Lines” is breaking all kinds of music chart records, I think he’d rather talk about Miley than his marriage, you know? As for Paula… well, she’s got a great attitude about this mess:

Paula Patton still doesn’t know why people were texting her things like “praying for you” the day after the MTV Video Music Awards.

“It doesn’t affect me anymore at all,” she said during a sit-down on E! News today with Giuliana Rancic and Terrence Jenkins, talking about Miley Cyrus’ twerk-and-grind performance at the VMAs—which, as Miley reminded folks in her recent Rolling Stone interview, also included Robin Thicke.

“It’s just so funny,” Paula continued, “because when I saw him perform I was like, ‘You guys killed it!’ We hugged each other, we went out, celebrated. The next day, my cell phone [has] all these texts: ‘Praying for you.’ ‘If you need to talk, I’m here.'” Etc. “It was all about the Miley thing and I thought, Why are people making such a big deal about it? Quite frankly, all my friends dance like that with him. He’s like the guy that you can dance with, ’cause he’s safe!”

Miley mentioned in her RS interview that, while she was getting all the grief after the VMAs, “No one is talking about the man behind the ass. It was a lot of ‘Miley twerks on Robin Thicke,’ but never, ‘Robin Thicke grinds up on Miley.’ They’re only talking about the one that bent over. So obviously there’s a double standard.”

Asked about the “Wrecking Ball” singer’s remarks, Paula said she “didn’t want to make a big deal out of it.”

“Listen, I think Miley’s a really cool girl and it’s not fair between men and women,” she said cautiously, “but he certainly didn’t take her and back her up into him…If that’s how she feels I totally understand. Robin can handle it.”

That’s pretty level-headed talk coming from someone who once did a little spying on her man when she suspected that he was up to no good—a none-too-proud moment she was reminded of when she was shooting her new romantic comedy, Baggage Claim, in which she hides in a trash can to spy on the love of her life.

“We weren’t married yet,” Paula explained. “We were boyfriend and girlfirend and I heard something on the phone and I was like, ‘Hmph, I don’t trust it.’ So I went down to his house and I was crawling through the bushes trying to look through the window…Totally got caught, he was with his boys playing poker. He was like, ‘Hey babe, wanna come in? Look around, no, make yourself at home!’ I was mortified. I’m also happy I was wrong, I’m not gonna lie. But he was like, ‘You’re a little crazy.'”

[From E! News]

When asked about Miley’s Rolling Stone comments, Robin also told Access Hollywood that “Miley and I had a blast…I wouldn’t change anything. She’s a wonderful girl with a wonderful family. She’s an entertainer, and she’s got everyone on the edge of their seat, so I’m very happy for her. All I did was show up and sing. She knew what she was doing, we had a great time.” Yeah. I think both Robin and Paula have decided to not give Twerky and The Tongue any more bulls—t to work with. But! Robin may have to do some trash-talking soon, because he’s going to appear on Oprah’s Next Chapter in a few weeks. You know Oprah is going to grill him about Miley.

I think she’s handling the Miley subject with dignity, which is good, but that is one tacky dress.

  2. Tulip Garden says:

She is really beautiful. He has always struck me as kind of comically sleezy.

  3. aims says:

    he looks like a slimeball.

  4. T.fanty says:

Good for her. I still think he’s a tool.

  5. Eleonor says:

“Quite frankly, all my friends dance like that with him. He’s like the guy that you can dance with, ’cause he’s safe”
Isn’t he the one who was grabbing the ass of a fan in a photo??

    • V4Real says:

Yes he was Mr. Grab Ass but according to how the girl tell it she and Robin had already met at a previous event. She was supposed to be the one he and Paula chose for their threesome but felt jaded when they left the party without her. From my understanding doing that grab ass photo Paula was standing close by.

  6. jaye says:

I like the dress. As for Miley-gate…I don’t get why people are trying to make Paula the poor, humiliated wife when that’s the exact opposite of how she feel.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      +1
Man, I am SO sick of that tired-ass narrative.

Is it that hard to believe that a woman might actually have a say in her own damn marriage? That maybe she’s actually NOT a victim here? Maybe she’s NOT a fragile ball of emotions, sobbing uncontrollably into an old afghan every night while her husband runs around, doing as he pleases with every woman he sees.

Paula simply does not strike me as the kind of woman who would let any guy steamroll her.

      • Leila in Wunderland says:

I agree, the people pearl-clutching over the fact that Robin is married were being kind of prudish. This is Hollywood, a place where married actors and actresses film make-outs and sex scenes with other people in movies. How is one entertainer grinding or twerking on a married entertainer during a performance any different?

      • Side-Eye says:

        Yes! Thank you.

      • V4Real says:

Leila thank you; you nailed it. They maybe acting but that’s still a bare ass and breast that are being grabbed in love scenes. Even if there is no tongue involved (and sometimes there is) those are still lips that are being kissed. But of course some people will try to defend that as art.

Even though Miley’s performance was a horrible performance IMO; that’s all it was a performance.

  7. Jen says:

I find Paula to be SO pretty, but holy crap does she have AWFUL style. it makes me sad.

    • HH says:

Yeah. She’s a disappointment on the red carpet, which is sad. Her style (or lack thereof) detracts from her natural beauty.

  8. David99 says:

    He kinda has a gut.

  9. Merritt says:

She’s pretty. He is gross and Miley is gross.

  10. NeNe says:

She is absolutely gorgeous, but what’s up with those eyebrows????

  11. Lola says:

I hope that romcom does well in the mainstream! Oh, and I like her.

    • vanna says:

don’t think it will…the description sounds like it’s the same movie anna faris did a a few years back (whats your number or something). I don’t think it performed well and I doubt that paula patton has more pull than anna.

  12. Kiddo says:

That dress looks like someone cut a pattern for lingerie, but forgot to remove the excess pattern and just sewed it into the garment.

  13. Grant says:

I actually think this is the best she’s ever looked on the red carpet. The dress fits her like a glove and doesn’t make her appear as broad as she’s looked at appearances in the past. Plus, she’s not giving that wonky, vacant stare.

  14. c note says:

Never trust a man who wears a pinky ring.

  15. GeeMoney says:

    That dress is hideous.

  16. Kassandra says:

“No one is talking about the man behind the ass. It was a lot of ‘Miley twerks on Robin Thicke,’ but never, ‘Robin Thicke grinds up on Miley.’ They’re only talking about the one that bent over. So obviously there’s a double standard.”

No, silly girl, it’s not a double standard because if Robin had actually been grinding on you people would be talking about it but the guy clearly looked hesitant to even continue performing once your bony tail rattled on his crotch. He did a few little bops and wiggles but I think it’s clear that he wasnt all over Miley…other way around boo.

    • Zoid says:

It was choreographed. At the very very least, people can’t make the argument he was uncomfortable because he could have complained or asked her not to do it. His team has said that much. She was dancing, it was a publicity grab, and it worked. Way better than either of them expected I’m sure.

      • Adrien says:

So why is Miley complaining then if it was choreographed for publicity grab? Are they baiting a feminist reaction to the performance? No one really noticed Robin because Miley dominated the medley.

      • Zoid says:

Adrien, it’s VERY obvious she’s only complaining because she’s catching flak for doing what every other female performer does now a days- grind up on men making ‘sexy’ dance moves. Like I said above, his publicist said it was choreographed, she had already gotten attention for twerking before, and she did it again for either attention or because she thinks she’s good at it. This is hardly ground breaking

  17. Megan says:

She isn’t wrong. I mean sorry, it was THE VMAS!!! They didn’t do this at the Oscars or Teen Choice awards for heaven sakes. And like she has pointed out the song Miley was singing was about doing Molly.

So lets all calm down, it wasn’t a big deal.

    • Lisa says:

I didn’t watch it, but I have to say, from the clips I’ve seen and from what I’ve heard, the whole thing seems seriously way overblown. I wish people would chill about it.

  18. itstrue says:

What does “he’s safe” mean exactly. He wears a condom?

  19. Rachel says:

I’m interested to see how this movie does considering Anna Farris already did it, and it bombed…

  20. Erm says:

He looks like a younger version of Simon Cowell. Yuck.

  21. Meggin says:

He seems sleezy to me as well. And I hate that blurred lines song!

  22. neelyo says:

This is the most attention Patton’s gotten in years. She can’t act her way out of a makeup chair and she’s so dull onscreen.

And damn, that’s one tacky dress.

  23. Adrien says:

Shouldn’t we stop talking about the VMA twerkgate? Jesus, it’s been a month.

  24. minime says:

so apparently the publicity is also good for her…Why would anyone do a series with exactly the same plot of something already done (The Ex List)? Beats me.

    • jaye says:

In answer to your question, that happens all. the. time in hollywood. Very few original ideas there. And it’s a movie, not a series.

  25. Penelope says:

These two don’t bother me at all–they actually seem happy together and who cares how they stay married? They really seem to enjoy each other.

Robin needs to stop wearing his pants so tight, though. It’s sleazy looking and gross.

  26. IceQueen says:

The dress is tacky. I don’t like it!

  27. Mirna says:

I don’t care about Miley – can we talk about the girl he was giving a rectum exam to?

  28. Chloeee says:

I wish that dress was long and not leather. Then we might be talking. And that whole my friends dance like that with him because “he’s safe” I thought she was gonna say he’s a good dancer or something but that just screamed red flag to me. Also none of my friends would dance with my hubby like that. Hello, I will dance by myself or with girlfriends. I will waltz with another man, sure but letsbehonest, club dancing is just kind of inherently sexual. I’m sorry if I was grinding up on really hot man, taken or not, that’s sexually charged. Why even go there unless there’s some serious rules between them that are, well, blurred. (unintentional pun, I swear)

    • Chloeee says:

And for the record I’m all about their freaky ways and totally believe she’s probably more of a powerhouse than she lets on, but I’m just wondering why they keep doing this whole, he’s not a cheater thing, instead of just saying something like, “we know each other better than anything, we know the truth” instead of this rainbows and unicorns thing. Obviously something’s going on if he’s giving the shocker to girls in clubs.

  29. Shannon says:

He looks under dressed compared to his wife. His T-shirt looks old with a stretched out neck. He should have spiffed himself up a little for this event. That’s all I got. I couldn’t care less about twerkgate or their obvious open marriage.

  30. Caz says:

Anyone who wears sunglasses at an evening event is a dill. Thicke gives me the creeps.
