Blossom’s Mayim Bialik wants to get back into acting

Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik - who has her PhD in neuroscience from UCLA – is out doing publicity for the release of the second season of her show “Blossom.” Even though she’s made some tremendous accomplishments academically and scientifically (how many celebrities can say that?), Mayim says she’s actually trying to get back into acting. She just had her second son, and notes that she’s auditioning now in hopes of landing a new role.

ET: When you look back at “Blossom,” in hindsight was it a good thing for you personally?
Mayim Bialik: Yes. Every experience we have makes us the person that we are. I would be a completely different person with a completely different set of neuroses if I hadn’t been on television. I think ultimately it was a very positive experience. I loved going to work. I worked with some incredible people, I got to travel all over the world doing publicity and I had a very exciting life that I definitely would not have had otherwise.

ET: So many child stars end up having problems with drugs or alcohol. Why do you think you didn’t?
Mayim: Really strict parents. My parents were very down-to-earth and I think it was important to them that I still be a normal person and have chores, responsibilities, curfew and all that stuff. I came from an immigrant background, so I think it is part of how I was raised no matter what. Some kids who aren’t in movies or on television get into drugs. For me, it was my family. My grandparents got on boats from Eastern Europe so we could have a better life and going to college was it — no matter what.

ET: Are you going to work in science to follow up your degree, or are you interested in acting again?
Mayim: I finished my degree last year, and I worked with a specific syndrome of mental retardation. I have done some writing for a couple of organizations that raise funds for research, but I just had my second child [both boys] and I am actually auditioning and sticking a toe back into the industry. I am very happy I got my degree and I worked very hard on my theses, but in terms of having kids and the family life we have, academia right now is not where I can go.

Acting probably offers a lot of flexibility that would be nice when you’ve got two young kids at home. Mayim is so smart, and it’d be nice to see someone with such a level head back in Hollywood.

Mayim says that her favorite episode was the one where they did a takeoff on Madonna’s “Truth or Dare” documentary. My favorite was the one where she imagined “The Cosby Show’s” Phylicia Rashad was her mother and was explaining a woman’s reproductive system by drawing it out using frosting and a sheet cake. Far, far too few girls learn about fallopian tubes that way. It’s so much better than the little pamphlet that was handed to me by my fifth grade teacher.

Here’s Mayim at the “Live for Sderot” Benefit Concert at the Wilshire Theater in Beverly Hills on February 26th. Images thanks to PR Photos.

  1. Personally I’d like to see that Disney movie on the birds and the bees. For a laugh.

I think my children would get a kick out of it too.

  4. Yeah, like Jaybird said, I’d like to see someone with a level head get a chance back in the spotlight.. and like the rest of the posters said: Stylist?

  6. She inspired me to get (and decorate) the BEST hats back in the day. For that reason alone, I’m cheering for a comeback!

  8. Argh! Blossom was a great show back in the day…and I also think its great that Mayim went and did other things after she finished with Blossom…

I have to agree with the comments on her outfit…its AWFUL. Its an interesting pheomena that often (not always) very well educated women will go out of their way to dress terribly. You see it in the field in which I work, great degrees, fantastic brain deliberate attempt to look as heinous as possible, dress, hair, makeup everything. It is an intelligentsia backlash…an “I am too smart to be concerned with my appearance…”

When I was completing my PhD in sociology I often got twitted for my attention to style, one colleague said to me that “I couldn’t take myself seriously if I wore shoes like that!!!” which made me laugh :)

I like to look good and I don’t want other’s to suffer eye pain from looking at me :)

  11. She did *some* acting kind of recently on Curb Your Enthusiasm. I loved it! She played Marty Funkhauser’s lesbian daughter.

  12. She lacks the charisma to move beyond the quirky Blossom role. She should consider using her brain to do the news or a talk show. And she should consider getting an associate’s degree in style.(I guess being a “neuroscientist” doesn’t pay well, huh?)

  13. She had a nice little part on Fat Actress with Kirstie Alley. Hasn’t she also been on Curb your Enthusiasm?

  14. I actually think it would be nice to have an actress that actually has a brain and did a thing or two besides photo ops and red carpets.

    A nice role-model as well.

Today many actresses are not pretty- Lindsey Lohan, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner etc. so it wouldn’t be a big deal to have another actress that is not pretty.

  17. I actually have a friend who resembles her, and she is a very strikingly attractive woman. She has a lot going for in unconventional looks - eyes, high cheekbones, full lips, clear skin. You can’t tell about her body because of her clothes. I think that and the hair are what makes her unattractive. Oh, and the eyebrows.

  18. If she has a PhD, why in the hell would she want to be around a bunch of idiot actors?

  19. I agree about the smart woimen dressing different comment. I have an ad vanced degree also, and I was amazed agt how many people didn’t take me seriously when I started working. I’m not saying I’m a looker, but I try to take care of myself.

  21. God, Joey Lawrence looks more feminine. Watching her on film should be a game on Fear Factor.

  23. How about we start judging actors for their ability to act, people?

  26. Yeah, great, she’s ugly. We get it.

Why’s there some unwritten rule that if you want to be taken seriously as a female actor that you must be good looking? You know how many ugly male actors there are that absolutely no-one shoots their mouths off about? I can think of at least several.

Some women would like to be actresses, not f-king celebrities.

    Grow up.

  29. You know what?

You’re right. You completely hit a nerve.

The film industry already lacks in talent. Give the less attractive girls a chance, because they might be able to act.

I happen to not have a dick, so it may just be me who finds bimbo actresses worthless. We don’t need anymore f-king Megan Fox’s. Sorry, but we don’t.

  31. I agree with you there Christina, Megan’s decent eye candy but couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper sack. She’s the other reason I didn’t want to see Transformers.

  34. She could easily be a character actress. They don’t have to be attractive if the director has an imagination. And a stylist can make anyone look good for the cameras.

  35. I agree with the posts that talk about the cookie cutter actress stereotype as well…it DOES get boring…but so does seeming as if you go out of your way to look as dowdy as possible. Look I’m never going to have Botox or plastic surgery, fake boobs, breast implants or diet myself down to a size 6…but then I’m never going to have that jacket either!!! :) There HAS to be a happy medium somewhere…

  37. The beauty about being a PhD student, is that you don’t accure many loans. Considering she went to UCLA/ Semel Institute (kick-ass Neuro program!), she was likely fully funded without having to take out any loans.

  38. For those people who are judging mayim for her appearance then seriously get a life. thats the problem with the industry nowadays as all kids are following people such as britney spears, lindsey lohan who have turned out to be failures and bad role models. Also dont get me started on that high school musical chick (gabriella) who posed for nude shots.
I think its brilliant Mayim wants to get back into acting. its great she had a break from it to experience ‘real life’ but after 15 years then why the hell not?! its her life. I think she’ll be great!
