Eva Mendes brought Ryan Gosling’s dog to The Edit interview, won’t talk about him

I’m such a fan of The Edit. It’s the best online-magazine launch in a long time. The Edit is net-a-porter.com’s in-house magazine, and they almost always do a beautiful editorial job. This week’s cover girl is Eva Mendes and while the editorial is very striking, it’s giving me a weird vibe. Like, this is Eva’s “Italian widow” pictorial. The vibe reminds me of The Godfather. Is it just me? And when you have a model like Eva, who is famous for having great hair, I don’t think you should give her this crazy bouffant thing. Anyway, you can read Eva’s full Edit profile here, and here are some highlights:

Her early days in Hollywood: “At the beginning it was tricky – I had to choose between paying the rent sometimes and having artistic integrity. [But] I’ve always worked with great people,” she adds diplomatically. “I like taking advantage of my range.”

The Place Beyond the Pines: “It was the first time I felt like I’d played a real person. When I saw the film, I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s a real woman with real struggles and torture behind her eyes’. That was big for me.”

She brought Ryan Gosling’s dog to the interview: A sign that their relationship may still be going strong can be found at the actress’ feet: two sleeping dogs she calls “my loves”, her regal Belgian Malinois, Hugo, and Gosling’s hulking mutt, George.

She wants to work with Almodovar: Working with Pedro Almodóvar is next on her wish list – she emailed the director to tell him so. “I’d love to work with Penélope Cruz on an Almodóvar film,” she says. “Penélope’s kind of the greatest.” The director has yet to bite, but Mendes says, “I believe in planting seeds. If you genuinely love somebody’s work, I think you should tell them.”

Her side-project with New York & Company: “I’m particular about who I lend my name to,” she says. Before agreeing to it, she consulted her mother and sisters: “Everybody was like, ‘This is amazing!’” It will appeal to fans of Mendes’ retro-chic style. “It’s directly inspired by my closet,” says the actress, who loves body-flattering, vintage-print dresses. But she often makes a beeline for Goodwill stores. “I think it comes back to not having the means to buy what you wanted. I’ve never grown out of being that girl.”

Fashion rules: “If you go short, no cleavage or anything super-fitted; if you’re covered from head to toe, you can go as fitted as you like.”

She doesn’t want to talk about Gosling: Mendes reveals that shooting has wrapped on How to Catch a Monster and that it was “an incredible experience”, but that’s all she’ll say. “I’m not trying to be cagey or protective,” she insists. “But when I go through something that has such an impact on me, it’s tough for me to articulate.” When I broach the Mendes/Gosling relationship, she winces. “I’m sorry. I’m shutting down,” she says, half apologetically. “I’m such a weirdo. I literally lose my ability to speak – and you were doing so well,” she adds.

Her protective bubble: I recount a recent report that she has told Gosling she wants to be married by the time she turns 40 and start a family. “Oh, is that what they’re saying?” she replies, arching one of her eyebrows before explaining that gossip, like red meat, is not part of her diet. “I live in a very protective kind of bubble that I’ve created for myself,” Mendes says. She shifts her gaze to Hugo, still sleeping at her feet. “You know, he’s an attack dog,” she adds with a smile.

[From The Edit]

So basically when a journalist asks about Ryan Gosling, Eva coyly hints that she’ll sic her attack dog on the reporter? Classy. Why not a simple “no comment”? It’s not that difficult. That’s my problem with so many of these ladies – they work so hard to not even get the personal questions and it’s like they don’t even realize how easily they could deflect the personal questions themselves. Besides that, it’s not like Eva hates that we’re talking about her relationship with Gosling. Dating Ryan Gosling is the best career move she’s made in a long time! She wanted us to see photos of the two of them together. But it’s all a game. Blah. As for the Almodovar stuff – she really reminded of Jessica Biel there. So much hustle and so little acting chops to back it up.

If she brought his dog, I mean won’t a question about him come up, like organically? I mean oh yes this is ryan’s dog, but please don’t ask me about him…*side-eye*

    • bns says:

      Exactly.

    • I Choose Me says:

My thoughts as well. I mean I still think she and Ryan are a weird coupling but whatever floats their boat you know. I don’t get all the dodge and weave about their relationship. All she’s gotta say is he’s fine/doing great or as Kaiser said ‘No comment.’

    • Relli says:

uh totally, I do not get her at all. She totally strikes me a tan J. Biel.

    • Amy85 says:

Eva brought her own dog as well. If she didn’t then I can understand the criticism.

    • Lzard says:

+1. Also side-eyeing the 38 year old actress part. Google chez Marc Olivier Fogiel she was (awkwardly) revealed to be 35 when she was claiming to be 29 late 2007/early 2008 so she must be 42 or 43…I don’t understand why she fronts like she ONLY cares about the craft while at the same time pandering to blockbuster, ‘that girl’ loving demographic by shaving a couple years off. I guess she isn’t the arthouse actress she’s posturing to be.

  2. MistyNinja says:

I think she takes beautiful photos. But when she opens her mouth to speak or act I just feel creeped out. Why is this. You go girl get that Gosling just stop going on about your acting. You are not fooling us.

    • M.A.F. says:

That is how I feel. The third photo of her is truly stunning. But her working with Cruz and Almodovar? Don’t see it happening any time soon.

    • Relli says:

IKR she’s like odd in a non-charismatic way.

    • Liv says:

I thought she’s a really beautiful woman until I learnd how arrogant and stupid she is. The interview’s nuts. Seriously, Pedro Almodovar? She’s living in a bubble, that’s for sure.

  3. ag-UK says:

She is pretty but her acting is so so. Nothing special.

    • MCraw says:

She was in that new Larry David movie that recently came out…. Where he has long hair with Jon Hamm in it. I forget what it’s called. It’s so bad, that’s why it’s forgettable. Anyways, as bad as this movie was, I almost had a FIT when she came on screen. How is she, a Cuban-American, so incapable of pulling off a Spanish accent?! I mean, seriously, it was the worst and made a bad movie terrible. The weirdest sounding accent ever.

  4. TheOriginalKitten says:

I have to stop reading her interviews because it’s making me dislike Gosling.

She annoys the hell out of me, but these photos are really beautiful IMO.

  5. zxcvbnm says:

Is Gosling still a thing? I feel like he’s one if those actors who seem popular on the Internet but in real life few people really care.

    • Jegede says:

      Me too.
Add Conan O’Brien to that list.
Both get extensive excessive love on the blogosphere that does not translate to real life audiences.

    • oliveo says:

I think he might be taking a break from overexposure, but this relationship can’t be helping his career…

  6. DanaG says:

It was the one sure way to get Ryan mentioned by taking his dog. talk about passive/aggresive. Here is a hint Eva you don’t want to talk about Ryan don’t to pap shoots with his dog and take him to interviews. Eva so wants to marry him it would be her best career move to date.

    • Kate says:

      Dana G
I’m with you on that one

It’s like the celebrities who are on the red carpet with boyfriend/girfriend etc. Papping all over the place then want to claim, I don’t talk about my private life

  7. Maya says:

FWIW, I thought she was really good in Place Beyond the Pines so maybe she’s not such a bad actress after all. I’ve never seen her in anything else though so I can’t really judge. Regardless, I find her quite likable.

  8. StormsMama says:

I took an acting class with her- she was still studying with Ivana Chubbuck when Training Day came out. She’s 100x more beautiful in person if you can imagine! And I think she has talent as an actress. She’s B-list.
ETA I agree it’s silly to have the dog but not even acknowledge the relationship. But then again, whatever game she’s gotta have to keep Gosling I say play on playa bc he is the real deal.

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

I recently started acting classes here at home, so of course I had to go googole Ivana Chubbuck. OMG what was it like? The class has been one of the best things I’ve done thus far and I’m only 3 classes in.

  9. Penelope says:

She’s utterly full of herself. Beautiful woman though.

  10. Tanguerita says:

beautiful shoot and that’s the only positive thing I can say about this woman.

  11. Lucy says:

The photos are beautiful. It’s her face that ruins them. Sorry, but her face is too harsh to be beautiful, in my opinion. Although, her body shape is perfect. And I do like the way they styled her in this pictorial.

Regarding her and Ryan Gosling… That’s a whole lot of meh. Nothing exciting. Why be so coy about it when people don’t care that much?

    • Kara says:

Totally agree with you I never ever saw her as some great beauty everyone should fawn over… And her interviews are so yaaaaaawwwwwnnnn

  12. starrywonder says:

She’s a pain in the butt and sounds so stuck up in interviews. And no my comment is not because of her dating Ryan Gosling. He’s aggravating as hell these days too.

  13. Kim1 says:

She could do better, Gosling is not attractive or interesting .

    • Sabrine says:

She could do so much better than Gosling. They seem like an odd pairing.

The photos are lovely. She is a beautiful woman.

  14. Freya says:

“At the beginning it was tricky – I had to choose between paying the rent sometimes and having artistic integrity. [But] I’ve always worked with great people,” she adds diplomatically. “I like taking advantage of my range.”
I like that she’s open about making those choices and at the same time not putting down the work done for rentmoney. So many actors/actresses do that and it always sounds so ungrateful.
But that last line, about her range? I don’t know, I do know I’ve seen movies with her in it, but absolutely can not remember her… Don’t think that’s a good thing…

  15. ZigZagZoey says:

I used to like her some, but she just seems like the biggest bitch…
And I have never seen a pic of her with Ryan where they looked like they even remotely liked each other.

  16. lady_luck says:

She really is SUCH a b***h.

    • Meggin says:

Agreed. She gives off those vibes.

      • lady_luck says:

Most definitely not a girl’s girl!

        Or a woman’s woman!

It hard work, and takes lots of energy to despise women and view every single one of them as competition like she does. Much easier to give in and be part of the sisterhood.

  17. Dhavynia says:

I don’t get the hate, there are other actors more annoying than her and I think she’s harmless.

Gorgeous pictures; I agree on the hair

  18. Rachael says:

She should’ve done Dolce & Gabbana’s F/W ’13 ad campaign. These photos are that good.

  19. Eleonor says:

To work with Almodovar she should be able to act…

  20. Anna says:

    Ugh. Tacky, boring, bitchy woman.

  21. ZigZagZoey says:

Hey! At least she isn’t wearing a turban in these pics….Bonus?

  22. Mingy says:

ugh pretentious mitch! i get bitchy when i dont eat red meat lol, maybe she should have some.

  23. CosmicGirl says:

    Absolutely beautiful!

  24. yolo112 says:

…her “range”???? that may be one of the funniest things I’ll hear all day. If she didn’t come across as a narcissistic bitch, I would probably find her much more beautiful. But I usually find her face to be to angular and harsh in some pics.

  25. Maria says:

I thought the way she avoided the questions was cute and funny. I didn’t take her seriously with the ‘attack dog’ thing, and I doubt the interviewer did either.

  26. Mina says:

Perhaps it’s me, but I’ve seen Gosling in person and he’s average looking and isn’t as charismatic as I thought he’d be. Fantastic actor though. Loved Beyond the Pines! Eva Mendes looks like the handful of cholas I went to school with.

  27. HoustonGrl says:

She’s too hollywood for Almodovar. I find most of her acting to be really really plain, and plus her face is too botoxed to show real emotions. Sad, but true. As for the “deflecting” thing, you’re right she could have kept it simple – no comment. But that’s hard to do where your emotions are involved!

  28. StaCat1 says:

Bringing her famous boyfriend’s dog and then NOT discussing said famous boyfriend is as passive aggressive as it gets interview wise. It’s akin to calling the paps and then putting your hand over your face or wearing a big hat and sunglasses…

    Hooker please….

  29. Lumi says:

She’s really had some major work done…just compare her “old” face to this one (which is really beautiful). Cheekbone implants and she’s gotten rid of the chubby hamster cheeks next to her mouth. Her face is much slimmer now then it used to be.

  30. Claudia says:

Third picture down is stunning. But working with Cruz and Almodovar? Cruz would act circles around her, and Almodovar is known for sticking with Spanish actors. She’s just not at that caliber.

  31. Mazunte says:

I just have to say that I love these photos and ALL the clothing, especially the dress on the cover. SO beautiful!!!

  32. JJ says:

After Goslings 5 last pictures flopped, I think they both desperately need each other to stay relevant.

  33. poppy says:

Her and Ryan both appear quite impressed with themselves, that’s probably why they’ve been together for so long. She’s definitely been playing this relationship to her advantage since the very beginning. They act like they are such a big deal, and it’s all “hush hush”, but in reality, nobody really cares all that much anymore. She thinks she’s a bigger star than she actually is.

  34. Kosmos says:

I have no idea about her personality, but I do like the fact that she prefers not to wear body-revealing clothing and sticks to feminine, yet alluring looks. It takes someone with great taste and individuality to avoid over tight or low cut dressing, yet still pull off some major style, and she does it. Yes, I do think she’s beautiful, and she’s got naturally great hair. I have no problem with her choosing to bring the dogs along, LOL….

  35. Chrissy says:

I think it’s appalling she would threaten to sic the dog on the reporter– why on earth would she use an innocent animal as a weapon? What if the dog sicced the reporter, bit him badly and wound up getting put down as a result of the attack? Poor form, indeed. PS. She may be gorgeous, but she will always play the girlfriend role, she would struggle to headline a movie.

  36. Baskingshark says:

EM is batshit. She probably kidnapped his dog on the way to the interview.

  37. GreenTurtle says:

Eh, she annoys me, but I don’t think the dog comment was specifically directed towards the interviewer- more in the vein of being self-protective in general. Her face just bugs me, I’m not sure why, but it’s so specific- it’s like she’s broadcasting sex all the time. Which could limit her amazing range…

  38. Really? says:

Beautiful photos…as for her pines place movie, i couldn’t get through the first 15 minutes, and it wasn’t for the acting, it was the dreadful music, it was so dated and overbearing, like they ripped off the movie score from “A Place In the Sun,” too bad, cos i love watching Gosling…
