Emma Thompson in a mullet skirt at the BFI London Film Festival: awful or wonderful?

No matter what, Emma Thompson is always the happiest person on any given red carpet. For real. She just looks so joyful. Even Tom Hanks – who usually looks so happy and upbeat – looks like a depressive standing next to Emma’s ray of sunshine. That being said, I could look at photos of Tom and Emma interacting with each other all day. I bet they had a fantastic time working together on Saving Mr. Banks, which is the film they were promoting yesterday at the close of the BFI London Film Festival. Colin Farrell and Ruth Wilson were also in attendance – they have smaller roles in the film, which is about Walt Disney persuading P.L. Travers (played by Emma) to sell him the rights to Mary Poppins.

Anyway, I have no idea what Emma is wearing. I mean, I don’t have the designer IDs, plus I don’t understand why she thinks these outfits look cute. She wore striped (clown) pants to the Saving Mr. Banks photocall, and then she wore a mullet skirt with awful shoes to the premiere. Emma could do so much better! She looks like she made this skirt out of old curtains. Also: that’s her daughter Gaia! Gaia is 14 years old and so, so pretty. Ruth Wilson looks pretty good too.

Here’s the trailer for Saving Mr. Banks:

Since I’m including a couple of photos of Colin Farrell, I thought I would suggest watching this recent Colin interview on an Irish talk show. The clip is slightly NSFW (the language isn’t that bad though), and Colin is really, really funny. He’s talking about 50 Shades of Grey and his own sex tape.

I personally don’t like it, but she’s so lovely that I give her a pass on it and the Beetlejuice pants.

  2. Kiddo says:

She must have taken a course at the Helena Bonham Carter school of hot mess style. It’s stranger, though, because the top of her looks very conservative and the bottom looks half punk. It reminds me of those photos where two images are combined.

    • ShiOllie says:

Is she really a hot mess the way HBC is a hot mess, though? HBC is all steam-punk/witchy/don’t give a f-ck, which works for her, whereas I feel like Emma Thompson has a sort of late 50s urban bohemian style a lot of liberal, urban white women have – they like what they like and they don’t care if it’s not ‘cool’.

      • Kiddo says:

I like Emma a lot, but this is a mess whatever category it falls under, maybe they aren’t the same, but they are both hot mess. As an aside, I think Helena is ridiculously overrated as an actress, and her style is too try hard for relaying not giving a damn.

      • ShiOllie says:

Kiddo, I don’t disagree with you about the outfit being a hot mess. But I think there’s something really endearing about the way Emma dresses herself. Perhaps because clearly she is dressing herself. This is not a woman who deploys a stylist. The 90s were before my time, but sometimes I look back on slideshows from that era and feel like actresses had so much more personality in their clothes when they had to dress themselves.

I mean, look at Ruth Wilson in that black dress: she looks perfectly put together and perfectly boring. And she’s not! She always comes across in interviews as a very intelligent, interesting person. But she’s dressed so that she looks indistinguishable from every other generic late 20s actress. I’d so much rather a celebrity look like a mess but also look like she had a great time getting dressed than look really pulled together and have no personality.

I will always have a soft spot for Colin.

He’s come such a long way. I wish he’d do more comedies because he’s great in them!

  4. Anna says:

Awful but SHE is still wonderful.

  5. chloe says:

Emma has never been known for her fashion, but to be fair she’s an actress not a fashion model or celebrity that’s pushing their fashion or beauty regimen on us in magazines or commercials, so I’ll give her a pass which is hard with those pants:) I can’t wait for this movie, I saw a story on it yesterday and it looks really good.

I love ET eternally. And terrible clothes are part of the reason I love her.

It’s nice to see Colin Farrell bringing the hot. Ever since In Bruges, I’m a bit of a sucker for that wee man.

  7. Sixer says:

I think she buys clothes without trying them on. They seem like a good idea at the time. I feel sisterly about this method of clothes shopping because I do it myself. I hate clothes shopping. Well, I hate all shopping. If I can’t buy it online and it isn’t yummy food, chances are I won’t buy it because I might have to go to a shop.

And don’t get me started on hairdressers.

  8. Diane says:

Emma can do no wrong in my eyes but her fashion sense tends to stink.

  9. Myrto says:

My eyes, my eyes! God those outfits are HORRID. But it’s Emma Thompson so she forever gets a pass on everything as far as I’m concerned.
Though I don’t understand why she has such awful taste when it comes to clothes while she seems to be such a classy lady in every other department. Baffling.

  10. Gretchen says:

    Colin Farrell. Always and forever.

  11. LesBitches says:

omg those shoes that ruth wilson (?) is wearing with the multi-coloured dress, are insane!
    That heel

  12. Anna says:

Ruth Wilson! She is currently my fav actress. And Colin..there are no words for him

  13. taylor says:

I have adored Emma Thompson for years, so I don’t care about her clothes. She likes them (I assume) and that’s all that matters.
However, can we talk about the fact that Gaia is 14?! I can’t believe it! She’s adorable standing next to her mom, too.

  14. taxi says:

Ruth wrapped in striped vinyl?? Ugh! Emma’s so good that I don’t much care what she wears.

  15. Stacy says:

Love her. Such a talented writer and actress. Her joy is really contagious. She can wear anything as long as she accessorizes it with that smile of hers.
