Lana Del Rey: ‘My muse is very fickle, she only comes to me sometimes’

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey covers the November issue of Nylon. I can never quite tell what she’s promoting besides, you know, herself. Lana does have a short film (Tropico) coming out soon, but that’s not really enough to snag a magazine cover. Of course this is Nylon. Any reason is as good as another. As far as Lana photoshoots go, this is one of the better ones. Her face seems to have “settled” a lot compared to early 2012 when she was almost certainly plumping up her lips, etc. I also like the styling here a lot more than most Nylon shoots.

Lana did an interview too, and of course she’s full of herself. She’s not whining about America this time or talking about how her p—y tastes like Pepsi. She is alluding to how she gets no respect for her very important work. She also claims to not listen to haters even though they’re affecting her song writing:

On her next album: “When people ask me about it, I just have to be honest–I really don’t know[…] I don’t want to say, ‘Yeah, definitely–the next one’s better than this one,’ because I don’t really hear a next one. My muse is very fickle. She only comes to me sometimes, which is annoying.”

Writing post stardom is hard: “It’s harder to be an observer when people are watching you. You have to go further inside because the outside world becomes a harder place to draw from.”

On quitting drinking before 21: “Sometimes when I write about my feelings, about what sounds like a person, I’m actually writing about the way I felt when I was completely inebriated, which was really good–until it wasn’t working for me anymore[…] Thinking about not drinking forever was very scary, but once I did it wasn’t hard anymore because I had all of these miracles happen that let me know I was on exactly the right path.”

She & boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill are weird: “[Kurt Cobain is] a big part of our daily conversation. Jeff Buckley is another big inspiration. And Jim Morrison–I mean, we talk about these people like we know them. They’re a part of our relationship. We always say, ‘All of our friends are dead, and they never knew us.’ I’m lucky to have met someone who feels that way, too.”

On her new short film, Tropico: “It’s Elvira and Jesus and Marilyn and extraterrestrials all in one.”

She doesn’t listen to haters: “It’s important to have a good relationship with yourself when you become well known[…] People will say a lot of things, and you’ll start to wonder if they’re true. But then you have to go back to all of those little truths and kernels you found along the way that remind you: You are where you’re supposed to be.”

[From Nylon]

From what Lana says, I gather that she’s having trouble writing songs for a new album. I get it, really. It’s probably tough to keep writing different songs about soft drinks. Sometimes I sigh to myself and wonder how the 403rd post about Tom Cruise will happen while trying to say something faintly original. Not the same? Damn.

I do have a confession to make. I downloaded a Lana song a few weeks ago. No, not the Pepsi Cola song — the “Summertime Sadness” remix by Cedric Gervais. Don’t laugh at me, the remix has proven to be Lana’s biggest seller so far. Don’t worry, I still can’t stand the rest of her music. Her Tropico film will probably be a mess of a Lynchian homage, but at least she’s staying true to her alter ego.

    Oh, for the love of…

I can’t stand people who have to make a show out of their own eccentricity.

    • Trillion says:

      precisely

    • jane26 says:

This is why so many people hate themselves. Why so much pressure to fall in line and be just like everyone else? Inside, we’re all weak – to be human is to have flaws, idiosyncrasies, and yes perhaps even “eccentricities.” I believe she is being sincere about who she is, and I like her for that.

    • Faith says:

I think if someone is truly eccentric there is no show they just are.

      • sal says:

If u like the current incarnation of lana perhaps youll enjoy the prior two and one where she went by a totally different name. All seem authentic. Great branding each time I have to say.

  2. Bopit says:

Her album “Born to Die” is really quite good. I love her voice and actually appreciate her style and attitude; she seems different than the typical pop star. Summertime Sadness is great but “Video Games” and “Born to Die” are fantastic songs as well.

    • MCraw says:

I know! She’s got a great album and I recently discovered that thru Pandora. I feel bad for her, she’s a (insecure?) woman who gets mocked for her looks and talent. Maybe she tries too hard or cares too much, but I have never understood why she gets as much hate as she does. I love relaxing to her songs post-workout

  3. Kit says:

The remix of “Summertime Sadness” is ok, but the original is infinitely better IMO. The video is beautiful too… it gives me shivers:

  4. minime says:

I can’t stand Lana but “Summertime Madness” is on my playlist. I think that one is actually a really good song.

    • Liv says:

Me neither, she seems so shallow and then her fake lips – ugh! Loved her songs though. Hate it when I really dislike the person but love the music! 😉

    • blue marie says:

that song pisses me off, no idea why but it grates on my nerves.

    • QQ says:

Oh i heard the remix yesterday in my Itunes radio and even though im not here for this contrived twat, I NEED it for the running playlist

    • loveisthecoal says:

I just heard Summertime Sadness (the remix) for the first time the other day and I hated myself for a few minutes when I found out it was her. But curiosity won out and I ended up hunting down the original, which led to seeking out more of her songs…I really hate to admit it but she does have a great voice.

    • Lauren says:

Just need to say that writing a song about a friend who committed suicide (Lana’s best friend) isn’t something I would consider contrived.

  5. Patricia says:

Why the hate? Stop it. I love this girl. There is nothing wrong with the interview, I especially like what she says about her sobriety. Her first album is one of my favorite new albums in years. Her second album is less diverse, more chill.
I know she got panned for her SNL appearance a few years ago but that is when my husband and I discovered her. We were giggling at her awkwardness and theatrics but pricked up our ears and said “there’s something going on here…” Then we listened to her studio recordings (by her own admission she is a studio artist, nothing wrong with it) and fell in love, bought her album right away.
I just have to defend her. Her music is unique and hauntingly beautiful, playful, and sexy.

    • Jayna says:

I agree. And, dayum, I love her Drive full-length music video. After all of Gaga’s debacles during the Born This Way era as far as music videos, Lana came out with a fantastic, cohesive music video Gaga only wishes she could have done if she wasn’t so busy throwing everything in but the kitchen sink in her messy full-length, movie-type music videos for the BTW era.

    • NerdMomma says:

Agree, agree, and agree. I like the fact that she’s doing something different from the manic attention-seeking pop stars who desperately want us to look at their boobies. Just make interesting music and cool videos and everyone will…what? hate you? Does this site like any female singers other than Adele?

    • Victoria says:

Yes definitely! I quite love her, having seen the SNL performance and then going to her in concert, she either improved drastically or lost her nerves – her voice was amazing live and rather unique. She’s also appeared incredibly sweet and rather shy and reserved. I think she puts on her alter ego for a confidence boost – to be able to perform through an alternate self. I know it’s not a popular opinion to have on this site but I really enjoy her music 🙂

  6. TheOriginalKitten says:

@ Bedhead-Del Rey remixed is the only way I’ve been able to find her music even remotely palatable.

There are so many amazing female vocalists (um, HAIM anyone?) out there making great music. I truly don’t understand why people by this chick’s music.

  7. Jayna says:

I have a lot of Lana’s music on my iPod. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. She’s a talented and unique songwriter. I love Drive.

That whole Kurt Cobain is a part of our daily conversation, spare me. I hate pretentious comments. Daily? Really? LOL

    • glaugh says:

I LOL’d at the “all our friends are dead” part of that interview too. Is she serious? It’s so try-hard hipster.

  8. bns says:

I love her music. She has so many good songs.

And the original Summertime Sadness is so much better than the remix.

    • Side-Eye says:

I agree–I actually prefer a lot of her unreleased tracks to her albums though—and I love her first album.

  9. Buckwild says:

Imagine her, Rihanna, Shailene Woodley(?), and Miley Cyrus in one room…

  10. eliza says:

People are still trying to make this girl happen?!

  11. annaloo. says:

She’s giving me Tiffany (the former popstar) vibes in this photoshoot…

  12. poppy says:

    replace muse with talent.
there, fixed that for you, low-nah.

  13. Jessica says:

    I want those black stockings…

  14. crab says:

I think she’s very very pretty and I’ve never noticed this before but in the first photo one side of her face is completely different than the other side! I know no one is perfectly symmetrical but her’s is very noticeable!

  15. lady karinsky says:

I actually heard her cover “Heart Shaped Box” recently, and it was beautiful. I don’t otherwise dig her stuff.

  16. Grant says:

She wrote an amazing song that Cheryl Cole recorded called “Ghetto Baby.” Love it.

    • duchessofhazard says:

The original is called ‘Match Made in Heaven’. I’d believe that she wrote her own songs, because there are a LOT of her songs on youtube, and studio albums that went no where. I do think she has a distinct sound, I just wish her lyrics weren’t so repetitive (beauty queen, red lipstick, etc).

  17. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

How is the next “a sort of Angelina Jolie” doing? (in case you didn’t read the previous interview, I’m mocking her for saying that she wants to be like AJ i.e. do some meaningful work, but is full of hot air. I hate people who do that:(

The only song of hers I liked was Video Games….I’ve listened to a few others, but I didn’t really like them. I’d like her better if she wasn’t trying to pretend like she was this broke, struggling, original artist.

  18. anons says:

her surgeries make her look older than she actually is–and a lot like phoebe price.

    • magpie says:

Yeah, if you look at her old face she was very all American looking (like a pre-surgery Heidi Montag). She was pretty though. I think it’s sad when people go to such extremes. Like anons said up thread she looks like Phoebe Price now. Ouch.

  19. Stef Leppard says:

I can’t believe they covered her up in a big gray coat!!

  20. coolio says:

Her album was fantastic. Dark paradise and off to the races anyone? The girl has talent. There was an interview where she sung to the crew and I was blown away

  21. Maum says:

Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Jeff Buckley?
    Talk about teenage cliche…

(And I say this as a huge fan of Jeff Buckley)

  22. ella says:

I bought into the “Lana Del Rey sucks” thing at first because all the cool indie bloggers and hipster music nerds were telling me to laugh at her, but then I took a minute to listen to her music and found out she has some amazing songs.

I don’t get the hate. She is sometimes quite annoying and try-hard but there was nothing all that offensive about this particular interview.

  23. Lucy says:

Eh, whatever. I still don’t get her and probably never will. She doesn’t deserve the hate, though.

  24. GirlyGirl says:

    Memo to Lana del whatever

This year, let’s try to muster up a new facial expression.

    • Happy21 says:

      Right?

I just can’t deal with the dead eyed stare. And why does she never, ever smile? She looks like a pretentious bitch even though she may not be.

    • Maureen says:

She can’t help it. This is the face her surgeon gave her. Nothing she can do about it now.

  25. Ginger says:

Most of this photoshoot is cool with the exception of the two where we are looking straight up her nose. Her looks are very odd to me but I love her hair. I’m having serious hair envy.

  26. jane26 says:

I love Lana’s music. To the haters, may I ask if you’ve written something better lately?

    • Bread and Circuses says:

No, but I can name dozens of other artists who have written something better than her lately.

  27. Tara says:

    blah blah blah BORED. next…

  28. Bread and Circuses says:

As any serious professional artist can tell you, visits from your muse are great, but the rest of the time you JUST WORK HARDER.

I think Lana and her ego are perpetually shocked that money, fame, and adulation don’t just fall into her lap.

  29. Maureen says:

This woman, with her entitlement attitude and her wacky face.

  30. littlestar says:

Lana Del Ray’s voice sounds a lot like the singer from Placebo. I really like Placebo, so maybe that’s why I don’t mind a couple of Lana Del Ray’s songs.

  31. Lala says:

I love her! Her music is the soundtrack to my early 30’s, her lyrics resonate with me. Give her a try…you might like it 🙂

  32. some bitch says:

The first picture is freaking me out. Her face is completely asymmetrical.

  33. Yoda says:

SHe has an interesting but extremely asymmetrical face…

  34. Georgia says:

Love the second, fourth, and sixth pictures — I agree that the surgery seems to be settling and she looks better.
That said, I LOVED Born to Die and I will never ever get over that album. I didn’t find anything comparable in her second album, but that first one just got to me. The vocals, the lyrics… I loved it. I honestly don’t get the hate for her, there are so many pop stars out there with even more contrived images that don’t get the same vitriol directed at them…because their images are more classical pop star sorts of things?? I don’t know. Even if she’s completely contrived I like that she’s trying to do something different from the norm, and her songs aren’t all about sex or boys, but more about evoking an image. I found that a lot of things said in Born to Die were more than worth listening to, and at least that’s an effort.

  35. Caroline says:

    She’s so manufactured.

  36. MegG says:

Hate her interviews, love her music.

  37. Naddie says:

The bored-sexy face is annoying, but she’s got some awesome songs. Blue jeans is one of the best songs I ever heard.
