Olivia Newton-John’s missing boyfriend is alive, on the run

Four years ago, singer Olivia Newton-John’s boyfriend, Patrick McDermott, mysteriously went missing after reportedly falling off his boat off the California coast. Today, new developments emerged that McDermott is not only alive, but faked his own death to avoid mounting financial obligations. Now, the question is: how much did Olivia Newton-John know about this?

OLIVIA Newton-John’s former partner is alive and on the run after staging his own disappearance almost four years ago, according to US investigators.

A team of private investigators from Texas said they believe Patrick McDermott has been travelling along the Mexican and South American coastline since disappearing from a fishing charter in June 2005.

Lead investigator Philip Klein said he believed that the former cameraman had disappeared so that he could avoid paying debts and enable his teenage son Chance to receive a $A150,965 ($US100,000) life insurance policy.

“He’s alive – there’s no doubt in my mind, this guy’s alive,” Klein said.

“Everything was bad in this guy’s life. There was nothing good.

“Maybe in his mind if he stages his death, the insurance policy will pay off all his debts and he can leave his child a gift by pretending he’s dead.”

McDermott, who had been in a relationship with Newton-John for nine years, was 48 when he disappeared after boarding a boat called The Freedom in California.

An official report from the US Coast Guard released in November (2008) concluded that McDermott, who had previously filed for bankruptcy and owed thousands of dollars in child support payments to his ex-wife, most likely drowned.

Klein, whose agency specialises in tracking down kidnap victims and missing people who do not want to be found, was hired by US current affairs program Dateline in March 2007 to investigator McDermott’s disappearance.

In an episode devoted to the mystery this week, Klein revealed that his agency had set up a hi-tech trap to help locate McDermott by making a website called findpatrickmcdermott.com, which secretly showed investigators the locations of people accessing the site.

Klein said he suspected McDermott has regularly been logging on to the “spider site”, with the team tracking hits from what he believed was a boat traveling along the Mexican coastline as far as South America.

“We put what we call a trap on the web site where we can tell each I-address that comes in to the web site,” Klein said.

“The rule of thumb is always this – when you’re running you always are looking over your shoulder and we’re going to catch him looking at us.

“The most interesting hits have come directly from Cabo San Lucas (in Mexico) last place anybody saw Patrick McDermott.”

Klein said he believed that Olivia Newton-John, who refused to be interviewed for the investigation, had regularly been logging on to the site to get updates on the hunt for her former partner.

“The most unusual hits we’ve gotten were Olivia Newton-John when she was on tour in Asia, every hotel she was registered at and staying at there were hits from that hotel on that night where she was staying,” Klein said.

“So it’s quite obvious to us that the Olivia Newton-John camp is following it.”

Klein, who claimed to have confirmed sightings of McDermott from at least 17 witnesses across Mexico, said he was confident that his team would track down their target.

“Patrick McDermott walked off The Freedom and Patrick McDermott’s running in Mexico – that simple,” Klein said.

Jeez, someone should have told this guy that nobody can get away with faking their own death anymore – especially if you can’t live without the Internet! I do wonder what role, if any, Olivia Newton-John plays in all of this. When the news of McDermott’s disappearance first hit the press, Olivia remained noticeably tight-lipped on the situation. She did garner a lot of public sympathy at first, but then some speculated that she didn’t seem all that upset about it. Since then, she has married someone else. But it is interesting that the singer has been secretly checking in on the status of the manhunt. Did she know where he was?

This story has always seemed a little fishy. And you know it’s on when dateline has a story about you. lol.

  2. guest says:

    is this on friday?

  3. Ellen Smith says:

All of the articles state he is 48. He played the role of Howard the chemist in The French Connection in 1971. He was more than 11 years old when he played that role – more like at least 24 or 25 years old. I have always suspected he was alive – no body, plenty of motive for disappearing, career going nowhere, etc.

  4. drm says:

Nothing surprising here, except maybe those leopard skin pants….(my eyes! my eyes!)

  5. Mairead says:

I don’t think it’s that odd that she’s checking regularly, even if she has since remarried. They were together nearly a decade after all and if someone just suddenly disappears off the face of the planet I don’t think it’s that weird to think of them often or keep an eye on updates.

I mean, there are plenty of people who = are still sad about Richie Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers a decade later?

  6. morgs says:

he takes the cake on a**hole ex-boyfriends.

  7. Dirty Martini says:

Hey I keep track of my exboyfriends using the internet too.

I want to make sure they are living really miserable lives. Maybe she wanted to make sure he was really dead.

    I’m just sayin’……..

  8. Bodhi says:

I do to, Dirty Martini. It makes me smile a little when I see how truly LAME they have become 👿

  9. that's creepy of him says:

it’s kind of the ultimate in selfishness somehow to drop out just to avoid paying back alimony and the like. am i wrong? or just naive?

  10. LakeMom says:

If she knew where he was, why would she be checking the website? Leaving the way he did, it seems only logical she would be interested in his whereabouts and checking to see if there was any news about his reappearance. He probably owed her money as well.

  11. Zoe says:

    I agree Mairead and LakeMom,

they were together nine years, makes sense she would be checking in to see if there’s any news. Especially if she thought it might be in him to fake the whole thing.

And if she knew where he was, then she wouldn’t be checking in, would she? If he was caught, it’d probably be reported before it would be posted on that site.

In a way, I hope she was in on it tho (if he really is alive, that investigator even sounds a little off to me) what a horrible thing to have your boyfriend just disappear like that.

  12. tigerlille says:

I think that the investigators are trying a little too hard to link Olivia to the disappearance so that they can justify the money Dateline invested in them. Ridiculous.

  13. Anna says:

    Wow, that’s a whopper!

Reminds me of an episode of the X-Files where Mulder says “Only one person ever got away with faking their own death: Elvis.”

    Mulder’s right after all!

I don’t think Olivia knew about it though… if she did, whoa mama!

  14. McKenna says:

The fact that she was checking the site does not prove she knew anything. If my boyfriend disappeared and there was website dedicated to finding him, I’d probably be checking it too. I would think it would be more weird for her not to check the site.

  15. Shannon says:

I just read about this and I remember after it happened she never spoke of it. Of course, she doesn’t have to talk to the media, but it just seemed odd. Hell! Even Aniston talks about her break up with Pitt and God knows she should have kept her mouth shut.

  16. meow mix says:

I would think it would be more weird for her not to check the site.’

Exactly what I was thinking McKenna

  17. abbydoom says:

I’m sorry but saying that she has nothing to do with it because she checks the website is flawed logic, people. Maybe she really is on it and is worried that they’re going to “close in on him” soon. I’m pretty sure you get in trouble for faking your own death and she probably doesn’t want him to get in trouble either.

  18. Keekee says:

drm, you’re right about those leopard print pants. Girlfriend looks like she’s channeling Grease IV, where the hell is that Adrian Zmed!?

  19. tess says:

i’m in the “olivia wasn’t in the know” camp. what girlfriend whose boyfriend had disappeared wouldn’t check the website? you know..because someone who looked like him might have turned up with amnesia in mexico…

she was hopelessly devoted…what can she say?

  20. ccooper says:

I don’t think it’s so strange that she would be keeping tabs on the search for him. If my partner of 9 years suddenly disappeared and no trace of him was ever found, I would want to find out what happened if possible. I think Klein is looking for a sensational angle.

  21. mike says:

This is bullsh*t. They’ve got nothing to show for all that money they’ve milking, so they pay a publicist to write some bs for tabloids to justify all that waste. They haven’t found the dude, and until they find him, which they won’t, they’re wasting some idiots’ money.

And they’re dragging in Olivia N-John so they can maybe harrass her into paying for them to shut up.

Nice freaking scheme you thieves got here. No body, no nothing, but you’re getting paid for sitting on your ass, and if Newton-John is dumb enough, she’ll pay you to stop talking smack.

I gotta say, finding a sucker sure is a recession-proof business. Anyone wanna buy some swampland in Florida?

  22. 88modesty88 says:

I’m on the fence about Olivia… Wouldn’t she be getting updates from Klein whenever there was a credible sighting? I would imagine the significant other of a missing person would be able to stay in the loop? Why, then, would she have to check the site?

On the other hand, the fact that she did check the site so often could point to her not being kept in the loop after all — for whatever reason/s. Either because she was suspected of involvement or because she knowingly distanced herself from the investigation (loose lips and all that). Playing devil’s advocate here!

And I like Olivia, it just seems fishy…

  23. jeannified says:

I used to have some leopard print Guess jeans that I LOVED. I finally gave them to Good Will (grudgingly) about a year or so ago. She looks great in them!

As for that ex of hers…it doesn’t sound like he had THAT many debts, from what I’ve read…why didn’t Olivia help him out, if she loved him so much?

  24. mojoman says:

hey, maybe she needs a closure and by tracking this guy and finding out that he is actually alive (or maybe not) may give her peace.
