R.Kelly thinks Chris Brown is just like Mohammed Ali, MLK & Jesus Christ

I normally don’t cover anything having to do with R. Kelly because I have such mixed feelings about him – his seeming penchant for underage girls, the criminal accusations of child p0rn (he was found not guilty), and his relationship with a teenage Aaliyah are all part of a man who should not be allowed to interact with women. On the other side, he’s charming, somewhat bonkers, talented and he makes his own kind of crazy, interesting music. So… as I said, mixed feelings. Some people can separate his personal problems from his music and public persona. Can you? Can I? I don’t know.

So, let’s do this. Kelly is promoting his new album, Black Panties, and he’s giving some rare in-depth interviews to support the album. I read a few quotes from R. Kelly’s new Guardian interview yesterday and I was like “Oh, that’s bad but maybe it had another context.” So I read the full interview and you know what? The context makes it WORSE. If you have five minutes, you should totally read the full Guardian interview because it is insane. He’s perfectly willing to talk about anything but his publicist – a woman “with a face like thunder” in the words of The Guardian – starts bitching whenever Kelly is asked about anything not related to music. Here are some highlights.

He was sexually abused as a kid: One alarming passage of Soulacoaster deals with what Kelly calls his “secret box” – a part of his brain where he’d store childhood traumas, rather than talk about them with anyone: the death of a childhood friend; the fact older women were performing regular oral sex on him from the age of eight. Does he think this was healthy? “Well look at me now!” he says. “Absolutely.”

Explaining that “healthy”: “I would say, ‘To each his own.’ You could sit here and take a drink of alcohol right now and be OK. Someone else could become an alcoholic. So when it comes to the analysts, I think those guys are blessed with gifts to know certain things. But nobody knows 100% what affects the human body, mind or spirit.”

Songwriting/music: “I’ve pretty much got a leash on it and I know how to walk it – it’s not a stray dog,” he smiles, before switching comparison. “It’s no different to being Spider-Man. He knows when to spray that web. He ain’t gonna spray it at some old lady, walking down the street with her groceries in her hand! He’s going to spray it at the guy who’s trying to take the purse off her. That’s what I’m like – I know what to do and when to do it.” Kelly’s songwriting gift has many guises. He’ll describe it as a “beautiful disease” or “like taekwondo – you have to master it”. Another time he says he has been “abducted” by music or, best of all: “I’m in love with music and I’m pregnant by it. It’s like having twins. Or triplets. Or eight-lets!”

On Chris Brown: When he watched Chris Brown become the centre of his own scandals – which began with his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 – Kelly says he could empathise but that he never felt sorry for him. “I only feel sorry for weak people,” he says. “And mostly what I’ve come to find is that the weak people are the ones that are the haters. The ones that’s talking about Chris Brown, or R Kelly, or anybody that’s successful? I feel sorry for them, not Chris Brown, because he’s obviously one strong individual to be able to do what he’s done. He got knocked down a little bit and he climbed up. You know, that sounds like Ali to me. That sounds like Martin Luther King to me. That sounds like a lot of the greats that have walked this earth. It even sounds a little bit like Jesus to me.” He catches my eyes widening and clarifies: “I’m not saying that Chris Brown is Jesus or R Kelly is Jesus. But Jesus is the No 1 inspirer of someone being knocked down and rising again.”

Macklemore’s “Thrift Show” diss: “I see them as weak too. But I don’t get into what people think of me, I’ve graduated from that.”

Whether he would boycott Florida after Trayvon: “No,” he says. “I’m not into boycotting anything because that, for one, is not going to bring Trayvon back, and that’s the main issue here.”

Working with Lady Gaga: “Yes she is [an alien], and I met my match when I met her. She’s not afraid to just do themselves and not try to do anyone else.”

[From The Guardian]

Not to defend R. Kelly’s Chris Brown comments too much, but it does sound like he was TRYING to say that Chris’s path – falling from grace and attempting redemption – is the path of the righteous. But Kelly just says it in a horrible way where it seems like he’s saying Chris Brown is the new Jesus and MLK and Mohammed Ali.

Also, I love ALL of his comparisons for songwriting. Taekwondo, Spider-man, stray dogs, pregnancy. HE IS PREGNANT WITH MUSIC.

Well, Muhammed Ali liked hitting people, so twinsies!

  2. Jessiebes says:

Another celebrity that got hit by the stupid stick.

    • Liv says:

For sure! I can’t believe this wasn’t meant ironically:

Does he think this was healthy? “Well look at me now!” he says. “Absolutely.”

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Did you read the whole article?
Because that made me cringe at first but then when I read further, I interpreted it as him saying “Well look at me now-I’ve overcome my past to become a wealthy and successful man”, meaning the childhood trauma didn’t emotionally cripple him. I didn’t take it to as him validating or negating the traumatic things that happened to him.

I could be wrong though–maybe I’m giving him too much credit but that’s how I took it.
I also think there’s a level of machismo in the black male community (and to be fair, probably men in general) where it’s not ok to whine about being molested by women. Maybe a combo of both?

Sorry for the lack of cohesion..just thinking aloud here..

      • Liv says:

Hmm, not sure about that. I didn’t read the whole article though. I thought he didn’t realized, just like Chris Brown, what was done to him. Maybe you’re right, but the tone of the interview or the excerpts doesn’t speak in his favor 😉

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Ok..you’re probably right. I wasn’t committed to my initial interpretation.

  3. Frida_K says:

    R. Kelly is creepy.

At least Madonna’s toys are of age.

  4. Audrey says:

He’s gross. Ugh. Yes, child molestation was fine. He obviously did not turn out okay, idiot

    • JojoAnn says:

I hate to say this because I know it could read as an attempt to minimise child abuse but I really doubt those claims he is making. Pretty much every rnb/hiphop artist makes this claim. They think it boosts their “player” cred. Its like, “man my game was so hot bitchez were lining up to blow me when I was eight”. And ofcourse none of them (other than D Mclurkin, but he is Gospel) claim to have had a male abuser. And absolutely no one was still a virgin at 18.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah I was wondering about that myself….and I’m not saying that it didn’t happen but I hear this same claim so many times. Brown said he was sexually abused by women as well right? Or at least he claimed he lost his virginity at age 8 or something..

Are there really that many grown women out there in the black community, molesting young boys?
(I’m asking this question genuinely here.)

Maybe they were molested not by women, but by men and are too ashamed to admit it? Curious…

      • Mika says:

TOK: Yeah, he BRAGGED about losing his virginity at 8 – which sounds more like a rape than something that he should be bragging about.

      • Jenny says:

I won’t comment on the veracity of his claims because I really have no idea, but why is it so hard to believe that a grown woman would molest a little boy when there are many instances of grown men molesting children? Why would these men’s abusers have to have been men, but they are too embarrassed to say it? I just don’t follow the logic, unless it is that only men can be sexually deviant.

My husband was, what I would call, raped by a teen and grown woman when he was as young as 6 or 7. It happens.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

@Jenny-I wasn’t trying to sound insensitive or doubtful about it and I apologize if it came off that way. I’m sure it happens, I’m just surprised at how many young rappers/singers claim to have lost their virginity at such a young age by an older woman. It just seems unusual, that’s all, but maybe it’s much more common than I think.

      • Pamela says:

Sorry, I am trying to reply to TOK’s comment just below yours and it isn’t working… Often, abusers were themselves abused. Knowing that, it is not that hard to jump to the conclusion that yes, there may be that many grown women molesting boys. And we may not hear about it as often because as others have stated, some of these male victims grow up to see it not as abuse, but as a sign of how much “game” they had, even at age 8. (ewwww) There are a lot more male victims of sexual abuse (minors AND grown adults) than we hear about. I have to admit, my first thought on reading what Chris Brown said was “BS”. But the thing is, he put it out there like “I was 8 and older women couldn’t get enough of me”, but really it was more like “I was abused at 8 by a woman that was probably also abused at 8 and had ended up with some life long serous issues because of it.” Totally different angle.

  5. NerdMomma says:

His comments are indefensible. Chris Brown didn’t get knocked down. He slammed a woman’s head against a car window then threw her out onto the street and drove away. SHE got knocked down, SHE got back up. I don’t recall any stories about MLK or Jesus beating the crap out of a woman and having to fight their way back to redemption. Also, I don’t see Chris Brown climbing back up. Throwing chairs through windows and getting into street fights with his bodyguards there to do the heavy lifting is not the path to redemption.

    • MrsBPitt says:

EXACTLY!!!! I thought the same thing. Chris Brown didn’t getted knocked down…he knocks people down! I just can’t with these idiot rappers, musicians, actors, etc. thinking they are the second coming! How can someone’s ego get this huge? Its disgusting!

    • Amy Tennant says:

      Well said, NerdMomma!

    • Jacqueline says:

The only way that Chris Brown is like King or Ali is that he is black and likes to punch people. That’s where the comparison ends.

  6. I Choose Me says:

So much wrong here I don’t even know where to begin. So Chris Brown is a victim in all this? Aw poor wittle abuser who can’t catch a break and has to live with the consequences of his actions. But that’s just because we’re all just a bunch of jelus h8ters right?

As for the rest of the interview. O_o

Whyn’t you sit yo ass down you cradle-robbing, mid-life crisis looking, wish you’d kept yourself in the closet douchebag!

Ugh cannot stand this man! And WTF is he wearing?

  7. Cora says:

So … he’s saying that Chris Brown’s “haters” are “weak people”?

    • Liv says:

That would be us then 😉

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah that’s exactly what he’s saying.
But of course he’s going to relate to Brown more so than the people who take issue with Brown’s behavior (ie US) because he was similarly demonized by the public (and rightly so, might I add).
I mean, his comments are completely ignorant but I guess I understand why he’s taking Brown’s side in this.

  8. blue marie says:

I don’t think a person can seek redemption until they acknowledge their wrongs, and CB still plays victim. To compare an abuser with anger issues to MLK or Jesus is profane.

  9. eliza says:

I guess I fail to see how an angry woman beater is like Jesus Christ and MLK. Both men were about peace.

  10. Arock says:

…said R Kelly. Lets keep it in perspective here. Not an excuse at all, but rereading his a answers, it’s either really funny/sad or in another life he’d be yelling at a pole on a subway platform with a cup. He’s just kind of stunted.

  11. Willa says:

He uses the analogy of Spiderman “spraying ” people. So R.Kelly.

  12. SamiHami says:

He’s a moron. And I’m not a hater. He just really is a moron.

    Eight-lets?

    Yeah. Moron.

  13. Cristina says:

Someone’s having a crazy-off or something with Kanye :)) They even dress alike.

  14. AlmondJoy says:

Ummmm… I thought it was understood by all that R.Kelley is crazy. I never try to make sense of his ridiculous comments lol..

  15. Kiddo says:

Some people were persecuted because of the color of their skin. They got back up and fought the good fight, not just for themselves, but for others. People hated MLK for peacefully pushing for equal rights. MLK lost his life for these efforts.

Chris Brown beat the snot out of a woman, tossed chairs through windows, etc etc, continues in this same vein, and gets community service that, purportedly, he gamed. People have said negative things about him on the internet.

    Talk about a false equivalency.

  16. Lucy2 says:

    Shut. It.

  17. Dani2 says:

He hasn’t been okay in a LONG time so I’m not even going to give his crazy comments much thought.

  18. The Original Mia says:

He’s an idiot. Of course, something stupid would come out of his mouth.

  19. HK9 says:

OK, this joker spends his time writing songs about being trapped in a closet. I think it’s safe to assume he’s a moron and ignore anything that comes out of his mouth.

  20. Elodie says:

Ah yes, we remember the biblical tale of Jesus throwing rocks at his mother’s car and and beating up his then girlfriend. And how can any of us forget when MLK took a break during his anti-violence speeches and freedom march to piss on a few underage girls?….

There are NO mixed feelings from me. Being abused is NOT an excuse for his history that should NOT be forgotten regardless of his musical status in R&B. I don’t want a grade A-hole to prosper or influence a young generation regardless of how much they entertain with such awful thoughts, a so-called adult with a penchant for underage girls defending a woman beater with anger issues!… To have to nerve to compare an abusive dumba$$ with people that have actually done great things for mankind! What is it with this collection of major D-bags comparing themselves to selfless people??

“I only feel sorry for weak people.”

He couldn’t have said it any better about himself and Chris Brown; men who beat women and prey on underage girls are weak and emotionally disturbed. It’s because both their a$$es are wealthy that they aren’t sitting in prison RIGHT NOW!

  21. Nicolette says:

Idiot, period. I’m sorry, I couldn’t get past the first few sentences of his interview where he seemingly boasts about receiving oral sex at age 8!!!! And on top of that, claiming it was “healthy”. I could understand as a child being manipulated, abused and almost brainwashed into thinking it’s okay for something like that be going on, but he’s an adult and to proclaim something as sexual abuse on a child as healthy is beyond sick to me. I can’t even put into words the punishment I think people should receive for doing that to an innocent child. It makes my blood boil.

  22. prissa says:

He really sickens me. He’s been in the business all these years and hasn’t grown beyond singing sseexx songs. He has some classic hits (Believe I Can Fly, Step in the name of Love, etc) but it’s sad that he hasn’t tried to maintain a mature sound and instead, resorts to singing about breaking someones back like a lobster… WTF kind of lyric is that????

And he thinks he is healthy??? Being a pedophile is healthy now???? He disgusts me.

It absolutely amazes me how a person can get rich and instead of getting help for their problems (since they have the wealth and can take the time to do so) they INDULGE their problems. While you have working class folks out here who have the same issues and work thru them, wondering how they will pay their medical bills, worrying about taking off from work, hoping their absences/behavior doesn’t affect their job performance. Yet the wealthy (who display the same behaviors or miss tour dates, show up late for photo shoots, etc) are called “genius” or “creative” or “eccentric”. The state of this world saddens me…

    I’m done.

    NOT A FAN.

Had to Edit to say – he’s on some Kanye level of delusion. I’m thoroughly convinced that these folks are programmed to say these outlandish things. What he said about Chris Brown just can not possibly be something real that he believes. He’s just pushing the agenda and it’s disgusting.

    I’m really done this time.

  23. Cecilia says:

I can’t believe Lady Gaga collaborated with this demented fool. GaGa crashing & burning might be influenced by her association with him.

  24. Lydia says:

Everything he says bout Chris brown is so wrong. Chris brown is not rising up. He is still a maniac who enjoys hurting others. I have not read the bible but I don’t remember hearing anything about Jesus beating women almost to death.
