Emma Watson has problems being ‘sexy’

emmawatson2
It’s no secret that the freckled, cute-as-a-button little girl from the Harry Potter films has grown into a swan. Judging solely from pictures, it’s amazing what a really good blow-out can do for naturally frizzy hair. But Emma Watson is surprising conservative in her dress and her attitude. She sat down with the UK’s Telegraph to talk about how upset she she is that everyone wants her dress and act sexier now that she’s grown up.

The 18-year-old says stylists try to put her in mini-skirts and she has been deluged with offers to strip off in films, but vowed: “I’m not just getting my kit off for anyone.”

And despite having been romantically linked with notorious Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell, she claims she would only date a close friend – never a celebrity.

Miss Watson currently filming the final installment of the Harry Potter series, believes less is more and that paparazzi would never catch her stumbling in the gutter “with my boobs out and a short skirt”.

She said: “I find this whole thing about being 18 and everyone expecting me to be this object… I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do a photo-shoot people desperately want to change me – dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe.”

“Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn’t do that.”

“Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy. What’s sexy about saying, ‘I’m here with my boobs out and a short skirt…have a look at everything I’ve got’? My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder.”

But Hollywood is desperate for Miss Watson to reveal all, and filmmakers have sent several scripts for roles involving near-the-knuckle nudity, she told the Mail on Sunday’s Live magazine.

The actress said she would only strip for arty director Bernardo Bertolucci, saying: “I have no plans to do anything for the sake of it, or to shock people.”

“I might be willing to take my clothes off for a Bertolucci film, if it was a part that really made sense as part of my character. But I wouldn’t do it just to make a point, to move on from Hermione. I’d hate to be so tactical. I’m not just getting my kit off for anyone.”

From The Sunday Telegraph

The way this story is being billed is as if Emma Watson was saying that she was so sexy, and that was the problem. But reading the interview, it just seems like she’s a completely normal teenage girl with a feminist streak. She doesn’t want to show off everything, and good for her. It’s nice to see a young girl who isn’t acting and dressing like… well, you know. Hurray! Emma Watson is Britain’s Dakota Fanning!

Picture note by Celebitchy: Emma Watson is shown in the photoshoot for the Daily Mail Sunday supplement that accompanied this interview. It’s a bit of a disconnect considering that she’s saying she doesn’t want to appear sexy, but maybe she’s addressing the issue that she faced with the styling for the Mail’s photoshoot.

If she has such a problem with projecting a “sexy” image then she should put her foot down and stop letting people dress her provocatively like the above pictures. Does she not have a say about her own image?

I love this woman!! It IS confusing, still confuses the hell outta me. Everytime I put on makeup I wonder why exactly I’m doing something so obviously about artiface. It’s literally a mask. Confusing. She’s so great, I can’t imagine the pressure she’s under.

I don’t think the photoshoot contradicts her statement at all, and in fact is a good example of what she is talking about. She’s exploring how to be a normal young woman (and just BARELY a woman at 18!), not a nun, but not a solely a sex object, either. All women have to figure out how to do strike this balance; we plebeians just get to do it in private, and don’t have to worry about the pressures of fame influencing our decisions. I’m glad she spoke out about this struggle.

The dresses she wears in the photos are not overly revealing. They are fairly modest. You see a lot of leg but that’s about it. Most “sexy” shoots show much more (think Ms. Anniston recently).

Very cute yes, not old enough to be truly sexy.

I agree, vdantev. She looks too young for those clothes and just looks awkward and uncomfortable in these pics.

Please don’t compare this chick to Dakota Fanning. Please.
Dakota Fanning could act the phone book before hitting puberty. Emma Watson thinks arching an eyebrow is the only way to convey emotion. No comparison.

Oh yeah, I didn’t realise how massive her forehead actually is until she pointed it out.

maybe she also has an aversion to mini skirts because of that one time when she wore it and the paps got a upskirt shot of her in the car

I know she’s 18, but I can’t help but still see little 12 year old Hermione Granger.

So these pictures seem too “old” for her. Even though they’re not.

seems like a typical thing an sexually inexperienced 18 year old would say. in ten years she will be comfortable with her body and sexuality. and dressing sexy won’t be so embarrassing.

These pics still bare her legs almost to mini skirt level, and have her clevage shows.. so what she’s trying to prove again?

Emma needs to be more assertive and tell the photographers and whoever is having her do those photos that she doesn’t do sexy. Then again if she’s being paid big moola, I guess anyone can force themselves to pretend to be sexy. It is too bad she isn’t accepted as she is, and has to be “shaped” into someone or something she isn’t.

I read on TMZ that Emma Watson uses Coonobabe makeup. Does anyone know what specific lipsticks/glosses Emma buys from them? Thanks…;)

I’m glad she came along, and I hope with all my might that she stays this level-headed. I’m tired of seeing celebrities that younger girls look up to dressing like whores. That gives people the wrong idea.

She seems like a very smart girl. STAY STRONG, EMMA.

  18. Matt says:

I personally like that she’s still conservative in her dress style. She’s 21 now so it wasn’t just something she did because she was a teenager. I think her style of dressing pretty but tasteful is way sexier than doing something like parading around in nothing but pasties and a g-string like so many people seem to think is sexy.

Give me the Emma Watson brand of sexy any day.
