Emma Watson in peekaboo red Dior at the Globes: silly or avant garde?

Emma Watson

Emma Watson wore one of the most talked-about dresses on last night’s Golden Globes carpet. Perhaps it was simply one of the most surprising looks? Emma wore Dior Couture, which looked classy and normal from the front even while she attempted to give us a view of her little black trousers. Then when she turned around, the dress opened up like a hospital gown to reveal a bare back and (thankfully) those leggings. Purple Roger Vivier pumps completed the look.

I think this is a very avant garde ensemble that Emma pulls off well. She’s young and funky enough to get away with an unconventional look, and it’s not like any of her bits and pieces are visible. The bare back is slightly sexy, but the modest front keeps the look in check. She knew she looked good too. That makes all the difference. Those pearl earrings are adorable! Emma had a great time with this outfit.

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts‘s stylist (dramatically) announced ahead of time that Emma wouldn’t choose her gown until the day of the awards. It shows. Emma wore a basic black Lanvin dress that passes all the checkmarks, but there’s something missing. The fishtail skirt is kind of cool, but the dress doesn’t speak to me. Those turquoise earrings are completely wrong. Like museum giftshop awful.

Berenice Bejo

Berenice Bejo wore a ruby red Giambattista Valli gown that was way, way too much. The lovely French actress was completely lost in this ruffled, embellished dress with a full-on train. I think the gown actually would have worked without the hip ruffles, which are the tipping point. Likewise, I would have skipped the gold earrings. Berenice’s beauty usually speaks for itself, but this look is overkill.

Melissa Rauch

Melissa Rauch wore a canary yellow Romona Keveza dress to support her Big Bang Theory castmates. I’m not crazy about the dress, but this is a step up from last week’s People Choice look. Her hair and makeup are very classy, and I think losing the little “sleeves” would have been a knockout move.

    Emma Watson looked adorable/awesome!

    • Jes says:

      +1000!

    • Sullivan says:

      I concur.

    • lizzy says:

I think Emma looked lovely. But I think she was obviously trying to pull focus.
I wonder was she looking at Jennifer Lawrence and was like…That should be me!!!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Yeah, I was wondering what she was doing there. Like I get that you don’t need to be nominated to go to awards shows–but I wouldn’t pose unless I was actually nominated, or a past winner or nominee. It seems a little try hard–especially since I don’t think she’ll ever put out a movie/performance worthy of a GG nomination.

      • Liv says:

I always thought that Daniel, Rupert and Emma all wanted to step out of the spotlight and do smaller films after Harry Potter, so I can’t imaging that she envys Jennifer Lawrence – especially the fame. But who knows, maybe you’re right and she would love the attention.

I really love her dress, looks super cute and appropriate. Why is Jennifer Lawrence just getting boring dresses? Someone at Dior must hate her.

      • Josephine says:

She’s in a new movie, and being there was probably just part of the usual PR tour of being out and noticed. I love the outfit, and I think if she wore something more traditional, people would just accuse her of trying to look like a nominee. She was a bit more casual than the rest, and that seems entirely appropriate.

      • Mille says:

I don‘t know why but over the years after Harry Potter ended I have less liked Emma Watson. She is all over the place.

    • Florc says:

She looks comfy and well styled. The whole look is great. She’s rarely a fashion miss imo.

    • elisa says:

She is nearly always interesting on the red carpet. At least she is never safe in her choices and has some fun with it. I adore her for that. I also loved this look. It suited her. The colour really popped.

My only issue was that the gown part could have been a little more fitted to her frame. it looked just a tab big, as someone said below.

    • emmie_a says:

I agree! She looked great from the front & the back! And I love her shoes – they add a nice pop of color.

      • SunnySide says:

I love Emma’s dress, makeup, everything… Except the earrings. They look like some kind if cancerous growth.

      • LeLe25 says:

Emma had the best look of the night! The past few years have been dominated by poofy, bejeweled messes of dresses; I’m glad she wore something that was simple yet striking.

  2. harpreet says:

Am all for Emma Watson taking risks, as long as they are good risk, this was not a good risk.

    Love the yellow on Melissa.

  3. Spooks says:

They all look awful. Emma W and Berenice especially.

    • V4Real says:

Emma Watson looks like she threw on a pair of leggings under a dress. Her look is more suitable for the Grammys.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. The leggings don’t add anything, they just look stupid.

Berenice looks like somebody ate too many ruffles and threw up on her dress.

      • ncmagnolia says:

Agree. Love Emma, but nobody could’ve made that look work, it was ridiculous!

  4. Anna says:

Emma’s dress/outfit WAS totally silly, but she was totally working and having fun with it. That’s the difference between her and JLawr, Emma’s Dior choices are a match for her style and personality, even when they are ridiculous.

I am dying for Roberts Jr turquoise earrings,

    • j.eyre says:

In this particular case, I (most respectfully) disagree with you – I adore Emma’s outfit in concept. Personally, I would have had the trousers the same color as the dress but I love it – all of it. Its so dramatic without being overwhelming.

i agree with your thoughts on JLaw vs. Emma though. And those earrings are lovely.

      • Sankay says:

Here’s my but concerning EW and JL…Emma has said she loves clothes and make-up where Jennifer has stated she’s not interested and just shows up to have someone else dress her. So I don’t see how you can put them against each other.

      • Anna says:

Because both are Dior girls – JLawr officially, and Ems unofficially (she wear a lot of Dior things tho, gets invited to presentations etc). It’s kind of BS to be a face of a major fashion brand and keep repeating the “I dont care about clothes’ line.

  5. Marianne says:

I don’t care much for Emma Watson’s look, but glad she took a fashion risk.

Emma Roberts looked nice, but nothing spectacular.

    Melissa Rauch looked very pretty.

Berenice Bejo wins Worst Dressed. Seriously.

  6. Stef Leppard says:

    Isn’t Berenice Argentine?

  7. Dani says:

I looooove Emma Watson’s look!! She can really pull off everything. +1 for the amazing pumps.

Also don’t mind Emma Roberts. I think the earrings are a nice pop of color.

  8. LadyJane says:

Emma Watson was my best dressed by far. Loved how she worked the whole look without descending into silliness. And the purple shoes? Perfecto.

    • BqqwewwweeeeerayawwwdnBe says:

Such a cutie. But she never wears nice shoes. They’re either too large for her or they don’t match her outfits.

  9. Stef Leppard says:

I really liked Emma W’s dress. It was perfect for her. She is cute, has a nice figure, and likes to take fashion risks.

  10. smee says:

The cigarette pants with a skirt/dress is not new – it was big in the 1960s. The dress part of Emma’s ensemble looked too large, imo

    • Esmom says:

Agreed that it looked a little too large, she reminded me of a kid playing dress up from some angles. Still she looked beautiful, such a lovely young lady.

I’m not sure why but Emma Roberts rubs me the wrong way. Not a fan of her look, either.

      • ray says:

Agreed about Emma R. Probably cos she domestically abused my boyfriend Kit Walker *cough* Even Peters *cough*

  11. Tessa says:

I thought Emma looked really cool. The colors were interesting, and there was a lot to look at, without it feeling like the outfit was wearing her. She looked hot.

    • Dreamyk says:

The front of it reminded me of one of my first sewing efforts..just bland and so McCalls..but then the back is so interesting and I love that idea. Maybe the dress needed a better constructed belt or some contrast color?

Kudos to her for mixing it up, she totally owned that look.

  12. Hannah says:

Berenice and Emma have the most beautiful faces! Which kinda softens the blow of their horrible dresses (or whatever you’d call that thing Emma is wearing).

  13. eliza says:

I really hate Dior these days. I know I am in the minority but I dislike everything I see on the runway or red carpet.

  14. blue marie says:

Emma Watson looks adorable, really like it on her. But I have an irrational dislike for all things Emma Roberts, so no.

  15. OhDear says:

Emma Watson’s outfit looks comfortable. That’s a whole lot of makeup, though.

Emma Roberts looks like she’s in her 40s with that look. Think it was the hair.

Berenice Bejo’s dress just needs to lose the bottom ruffle things.

    Melissa Rauch looks great.

  16. tifzlan says:

Emma Roberts is insufferable and clearly thinks she’s more important than she actually is. She’s terrible on AHS and everything else i’ve ever seen her on.

    • pamspam says:

I actually think she’s good on AHS, but I feel like the role isn’t a big stretch. She seems quite unlikable.

      • tifzlan says:

If she’s good then that’s the only reason why – that’s how she is in real life. For some reason, i just can’t separate her from the character and i also think she’s unlikable.

  17. mom2two says:

Don’t like Emma’s dress at all. But her hair and make up were really good. Emma Roberts looked very good. I thought Melissa Rauch pulled off that yellow dress well (I think Lena Dunham would have benefitted from a yellow dress like this as well).

  18. GlimmerBunny says:

    I ADORE the yellow dress!

  19. yael says:

i want emma watson’s shoes. like, now.

  20. Janet says:

Watson is a beautiful girl but the dress looked ridiculous. She can do better than that.

  21. Quinn says:

Thought Watson’s dress was cool…so fun to see something other than flouncy dresses for a change.

  22. vanessa says:

I loved Emma’s whole look. She really made a statement. The dress flowed so beautifully when she walked on stage. The pants and shoes are so different and fun.

  23. Scarlet Vixen says:

UM…Am I missing something?? The entire back half of Emma Watson’s dress is missing. It looks like a fancy hospital gown with her enture arse hanging out. Sorry, but cute actress or not, that has GOT to be the stupidest damned awards show outfit I have ever seen in my life. Reading everyone’s positive comments make me think of the movie “Ready to Wear” where the pregnant model comes down the runway wearing nothing but a wedding veil and a merkin and the entire audience is oohing & aaahing over the amazing ‘fashion’ of it, and Kim Basinger’s reporter character is so over the ridiculousness of it that she drops her mic and walks off the job. :-O

  24. JosieJ says:

I loved Emma’s dress. I thought it was perfect for her.

  25. Abs says:

Watson looks friggin’ amazing. Did not expect this from her at all, but I like it. Roberts’ ensemble SHOULD work but I ain’t feeling it. Ugh, maybe it’s just her I don’t like.

  26. littlestar says:

Love the red part of Watson’s dress, HATE the pants. I will never get on board with the dress and pants combo, it’s like it defeats the purpose of both articles of clothing!

Does anyone know if Emma Roberts has a relationship with her aunt Julia? I’m curious about that. Did they take any pictures together last night?

  27. I Choose Me says:

I don’t like the shoes but agree that this outfit is fab on Emma. She wears it well and her hair and makeup styling is on point too.

  28. GIRLFACE says:

I think Emma Watson pulls it off because she is so beautiful and young but I think if anyone even slightly less taut or less pretty wore it, it would be a disaster. The other Emma should have accessorized better, I concur. She should have worn some serious jewelry for such a serious dress. Berenice is gorgeous but no. Melissa’s dress looks like Lena Dunhams to me but it looks 1000X better on her.

  29. Alina says:

she pulls it off, she has fun and looks fresh. It´s her style and she likes it. Emma definitely has fashion sense and fun with clothes. That´s the difference between her and others f.e. Jennifer Lawrence has zero fashion sense, she wears what they give her and this is why she looks so disguised all the time.

  30. Meggin says:

I absolutely adore the canary yellow dress on Melissa Rauch. Out of all the dresses shown here that one spoke to me the most lol.

  31. P.J. says:

Wow. Melissa’s pale yellow gown showcases her gorgeous (curvy) figure beautifully 🙂 I didn’t ever really know that she was working with all that! I gotta give props for a gal on a super successful tv show not giving into to the size-00 Hollywood pressure. Love that ☺

Emma W. looks absolutely fantastic (love that she was so adventurous!) and Emma R.? I can’t with domestic abusers. EVER. Just awful.

  32. Sumodo1 says:

    “Museum gift shop awful”…priceless!

  33. serena says:

Loved Emma’s dress, so weird but at the same time interesting!

  34. Leslilly says:

Oh man. My eyes just popped out at Berenice’s dress. The imagery! It reminds me of huge, inflamed ovaries slapped on to the side of her dress. Between this and Paula Patton’s labia dress, we’ve nearly got a representation of the female reproductive system. Eek
