Is Mila Kunis’s Cosmo interview annoyingly rude or hilariously grumpy?

wenn20982179

I used to really like Mila Kunis. Then she got with Ashton Kutcher and now I don’t know how to feel. I think she might still be sort of cool, but I fear that Ashton’s douchebaggy ways may rub off on her sometimes too. I was reminded of Ashton’s grumpy impertinence when I read this new interview Mila did with Cosmo. The headline was “Mila Kunis Will Not Discuss Jennifer Lawrence” and I thought “oh, dishy, I bet this will be good.” But it’s not dishy at all. Mila just seems sort of hilariously grumpy/condescendingly bitchy:

Mila Kunis is the first global spokesperson for Jim Beam. (Yes, the liquor.) In honor of this appointment she sat down with Cosmopolitan.com to talk about booze, JLaw, and how she’s conflicted about whether or not she sees herself as sexy.

Cosmo: You shoot covers for women’s and men’s magazines. What is the difference between shooting for a men’s magazine and women’s magazine?
Mila: The amount of clothes you wear [laughs]. For a magazine like Cosmo, you wear short dresses and you have the one pose they make you do all the time and you smile and have the big hair. And then you’re in Maxim and it’s half the clothes. It’s very different.

Some of the men’s magazine shoots you’ve done are super-sexy. Do you see yourself as sexy?
Oh no, no. I really don’t. I don’t see myself as not-sexy, it’s just not [one of] the top 40 adjectives I would use to describe myself. But I do see myself as confident, but if someone sees me as sexy I’m not going to argue that and say “no I’m not, you’re crazy.” I’ll just say “thank you” politely.

Speaking of sexy, what’s your ideal date night?
I’ll tell you: we have a thing called white T-shirt night and it’s when you wear jeans and a white T-shirt and you go on a date. Nothing fancy, it’s just something that you love to do. And whether that’s bowling or dinner or going to a cheese shop and have some wine or walking around. I think that’s just the best thing to do — and sometimes it’s just nice to stay home.

Have you met Jennifer Lawrence?
Yes.

And what was your experience with her like?
I don’t discuss other people, just out of respect for what I would like them to do to me, you know?

OK. Miley Cyrus or Beyoncé?
Beyoncé. Nothing against Miley, but that’s not a fair question. But I think Miley Cyrus would say Beyoncé, because Miley is awesome but she is also young and Beyoncé has proven herself.

Are you a fan of E!’s Fashion Police?
No, I don’t care. I can honestly tell you that I respect E!, but I don’t watch it.

What are your thoughts on red carpet outfit critiques in general?
You can’t really concern yourself with constantly being bombarded with opinions, because everyone has got an opinion.

Are you going to the Oscars?
No.

What are your Oscars plans?
Not to be there.

Are you going to watch them?
No. I respect the Oscars, I’m a part of the Academy, I vote every year — I love it but I’m usually, oddly, out of town, and then I get back and hear who wins and that’s it.

Why did you decide to be the global spokesperson for Jim Beam?
They approached me and I gravitate toward companies that have a family-operated type of feel. When I met with everyone there I felt like I was a part of the company instead of just working for it, so it was a nice fit.

[From Cosmo]

I read this in Mila’s husky, bored, almost Valley Girl voice. I started giggling at “not to be there.” Maybe I’m reading too much into it – it’s possible that everything Mila says here is the God’s honest truth and she really doesn’t give a crap, she honestly doesn’t gossip about celebrities and she honestly doesn’t care about what people wear. And before you accuse this poor Cosmo interviewer of being inconsiderate or whatever… the most personal question was a general query about date-night activities. Plus, I imagine Mila only agreed to do the interview because Jim Beam is cutting her a nice check for the endorsement, so it almost feels like she was doing the bare minimum to fulfill the requirement. Is Mila a bold celebrity who lives by her own rules and didn’t feel the need to play cutesy with a pushy Cosmo interviewer? Or was the interviewer just doing her job and Mila was kind of rude? You choose.

I didn’t see anything rude or grumpy with her answers, except she may be envious of Jennifer Lawrence.

    • Dubois says:

I didn’t even see that. I think it boils down to tone – which we can’t tell. If her tone was light and joking this interview would read one way, if her tone was bitchy (and I don’t see her as that type of person), it would read differently.

I remember the interview she gave to that 1st time interviewer, she was so accommodating and nice to him.

      • jaye says:

I agree. I think to assert that it was grumpy/rude is reaching and reading too much into the interview.

    • M.A.F. says:

How? They wouldn’t even be up for the same roles so it’s not as if JLaw is taking her roles. I don’t think they are even around the same age let alone go after the same material.

    • Allie says:

How? By saying, yes she’s met her, no she doesn’t want to talk about her or any other celebrities? I don’t see envious at all.

    • MrsB says:

I kept waiting to see something rude or condescending….and nothing. I thought the interview was fine, I don’t even see anything wrong with what she said about J Law. She most likely is the type of person who is blunt and straight to the point and there’s nothing wrong with that.

      • mimi says:

        @MrsB

I agree. I don’t think she came across as rude or grumpy. I think the interview questions were poor quality and not very interesting . Why bring Jennifer Lawrence’s name up to begin with? It’s not like they are currently in a film together or they are known best friends who hang out all the time. They both happen to rep Dior products…that’s the extent of their connection. It was such a random, stupid question and I don’t blame Mila for not wanting to elaborate.

      • MaiGirl says:

Agreed. I think that sometimes, there is a cultural expectation that women should be warm, nice, accommodating, etc., so it makes a woman who is naturally more serious, direct, or blunt seem rude. There have been studies that showed that the very same direct manner is seen as positive and commanding in men, and negative and rude in women. I think some of this dynamic is going on in people who see her responses as short or impolite. I don’t see anything out of order with any part of the interview. Just because she wasn’t falling all over herself to be nice and answer every question in detail doesn’t make her rude or annoying.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“I think that sometimes, there is a cultural expectation that women should be warm, nice, accommodating, etc., so it makes a woman who is naturally more serious, direct, or blunt seem rude. ”

        MaiGirl, I agree completely!

    • lana86 says:

she’s fine. I bet she is a really interesting girl in person, but she doesnt strive for public approval and doesnt make a clown of herself, unlike others. Not saying she’s perfect or supertalanted, but she’s got balls.

    • MellyG says:

I don’t see anything grumpy or rude either, and i respect her decision not to talk about other actresses. I think that’s not jealous, i think that’s mature

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

@bowers, I don’t even see how you would get that she feels anything bad (envious) towards JLaw. I take it at face value, she truly doesn’t comment about other celebrities, which is a good way to be. All her answers say to me that she is not interested in the Hollywood games, and she enjoys living apart from all of it. It really fits with what we have seen of the way she dresses when out in public walking the dog, etc. She seems pretty down to earth and unimpressed with the Hollywood glam. At least that is the impression that I have.

    • Decloo says:

I don’t see anything rude or grumpy here either. Just straightforward and not very dishy, which I think is smart.

  2. I find her sorta bland. I’ve never seen ‘That Seventies Show’–not regularly, so I don’t know if she was talented on that. But for me, she’s about a step above Amber Heard, in that she’s not completely forgettable. But I don’t know…..she doesn’t seem like she’s all that talented. She was better than Natalie Portman in Black Swan (which was a sh-tty movie to begin with), but I find her meh.

    • FLORC says:

      Virgilia
Black Swan was a sh!tty movie and Natalie and Mila were nothing special.
There was nothing stand out in that 70’s show about her. I’m pretty meh about her too though. I think she has more flops under her than hits. And the hits are not because she was great in the film. Also, Ashton is a dbag and I wouldn’t be shocked if he was rubbing off on her.

For a while she did try to be like amber heard. The cool/hot chick that can get down and hang with the dudes girl. Amber=cars+girls.
      Mila=video games+ nerdy.

      • I still can’t believe Natalie Portman won an Oscar for that movie. Beyond the scandal about the dancing–all she did was make constipated faces at the camera. That’s it. They should’ve nominated Vincent Cassel–he was the only good actor in the movie.

      • M.A.F. says:

How could she be like Amber Heard when Mila has been around and in the public eye for hell of a lot longer than Heard? She has also had more success (and faster thanks to the TV show) than Heard. Plus, more than one girl can be down earth and hang with the guys, there is no quota to fill.

      • anon33 says:

I just want to point out that there are actual women who genuinely like “guys” things. Like, I love heavy metal/video games/cars as much as I do Martha Stewart/weddings/makeup. I don’t see why one has to negate the other. And I understand the context of your comments, VC and FLORC, and I don’t disagree that Amber Heard seems like a phony. But often the comments 9in geenral, not yours today) seem to indicate that NO woman is actually like this and it’s somehow “all for show” to get guys or something…I am here to tell you that it isn’t.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“I just want to point out that there are actual women who genuinely like “guys” things”

Anon, I completely agree. I hate idea that if a girl like things that are non-traditional, she is accused of faking it.

Also, I thought Portman did a great job in Black Swan. To me, it was about a woman being kept in arrested adolescence (by her mother, physically by the demands of her craft), who couldn’t handle the strain of growing out of that little girl box, which then manifested in mental illness.

      • FLORC says:

        MAF/Anon
I don’t mean girls cant like guy things. Or to compare Mila to Amber in terms of length in Hollywood or success.
Just on how they try to rand themselves for attention.

When either woman would speak of their hobbies it seemed forced and fake. Like it was for marketing only. Not for a real hobbie or passion.

  3. Original Tessa says:

I imagined her saying all of this in her giggly easygoing way. I don’t think she was being rude at all. I think she was raised by immigrants, and she has learned how to make her point and not beat around the bush.

    • minime says:

just like in my imagination 😉

I saw some interviews with her before and she always comes across as a very nice and genuine person with a calm attitude. So all her answers are pretty normal if in her usual non-bitchy tone.
I would like to see her in more charismatic roles. I liked her in the Black Swan, even if the movie was not the best ever. I think she would have made a better performance in Natalie’s role (and I’m one of the few who likes Portman, but her performance there was really lousy). I like her but i’m still not sure if she’s a really good actress or not.

    • Decloo says:

Yes. Remember the time in Russia when she was promoting a movie and some Russian journalist asked something rude of one of her co-stars, and she gave it back to him in fluent Russian?

  4. Lark says:

I honestly don’t think this was rude. I think the reporter was trying to bait her into saying something about JLaw that they could spin (possibly in a negative manner because Mila was replaced by JLaw for Dior), and Mila recognized it. Besides, it’s an interview that was supposed to be focused on Mila and her promotions and even if they weren’t trying to bait her…….I get why she’d be annoyed. It’s not like she worked with Jen on a recent project or anything.

    • JaDeRu says:

      This^
JLaw is the “it girl” so everything has to do with her, to get internet clicks.
It was a rude question and I’m glad she didn’t answer it.

    • paris hilton says:

She’s also intensely private and seems to think of acting as strictly a job. You never hear ANYthing about this girls private life. She dated Mac, she played WoW a lot, she walks her dogs, she acts, she dates Ashton…that’s ALL we’ve gotten out of her in…15 years? You never hear other actors telling anecdotes about her at all, so she just seems to demand that respect as well as honoring it.

    • mytbean says:

This interview was so bizarre. It was all over the place and had very little to do with her. It seemed like an inexperienced interviewer – like some intern who’d never… I don’t know. I half expected “So what do you think about the barnacles’ ability to change sexes while planted on the hull of long-rusted ships in harbor?” And “When you sneeze, do you ever fart?” Frankly I’d be annoyed too.

  5. Happyhat says:

Yeah, I’m really not reading any rudeness or grumpiness here at all. Giving a one-word answer to a question is rude now?! Saying you don’t care about a particular subject is rude? I dunno, I quite like Mila, so I can’t really read anything into this.

    • megs283 says:

I like her too, and I love her answers. From this interview I kinda feel like she knows acting is her job, and she’s going to do her work, but not buy into the BS. I really like that she didn’t comment on JLaw. Sitting down with an interviewer must be like chatting with that nosy neighbor who will blab everything to EVERYONE, so you gotta watch out!

      • MrsBPitt says:

You know if she had said anything about JLaw, like shes a good actress…the reporter would have used a headline like, Mila Kunis dishes on how she really feels about Jennifer Lawrence…I think Mila is a smart cookie!

  6. loma says:

I dont’understand her appeal… this interview isn’t helping either. She’s probably better in person or on camera.

  7. Paige says:

I love how she has ‘respect’ for fill in the blank. Ask a stupid question….She’s great.

  8. blue marie says:

I don’t know that I could come up with 40 adjectives to describe myself, I feel a list coming on. As for the interview, meh I found it kind of funny. Shes still a woman I’d like to hang out with.

  9. Sabrina says:

I really don’t see the problem with this interview. I don’t think she comes across as rude or grumpy.

I can definitely respect her decision not to talk about other celebrities especially if she’s not working with them. Those kind of questions are fine if you’re promoting something you did together.

  10. Kiddo says:

I thought she handled the answers with diplomacy and came across as genuine and humble.

  11. Kat says:

I love her. I think she really just doesn’t GAF. I didn’t really think it was rude anyway.

  12. Penny says:

Those are some super lame questions, I think Mila did the best she could with them.

  13. eliza says:

Personally I thought the questions were dumb and that she handled them honestly and with some humor.

I have always liked her and I think I am in the minority because I really hope she and Kutcher are in it for the long haul and are happy.

  14. Aria says:

JLaw replaced her as the face of Miss Dior Bag line. The reporter wanted to go there. Mila was clever enough to dodge the bullet.

I like Mila with or without Ashton

    • Hmm … that puts a different spin on the questions and answers. I’m with Kaiser and thought she came across as incredibly rude. But Dior to Jim Beam? That’s quite a step down, and the reporter did probably want to go there. That would tick me off too.

  15. JaDeRu says:

I didn’t think she was rude. I like her and I don’t let her relationship with Kelso…I mean Ashton shade the like. Meh…maybe she loves him.

  16. Whitney says:

Those questions seemed random; I don’t think her answers were rude at all. She was polite and respectful and kept things short. What was the point of the Jennifer Lawrence question anyway?

  17. bns says:

I really like her and I wish she would dump Ashton already.

  18. Serena says:

She doesn`t get her status dropped since dating mr.douche. now she`s being one too.

  19. Talie says:

No actress wants to be asked about another actress in *their* interview. It just adds to their own insecurity.

  20. happymama says:

I like her. She’s smart. She seems down to earth. I also like how she didn’t feed into gossip although I’d love reading it! She dresses like a normal person when she’s out. In my opinion that shows she is cool and not trying to be anything other than a regular chick with a neat profession. And she’s bilingual!

  21. salma says:

it’s a good thing she knows that she is not all that

  22. smee says:

I think being with the Ashole has made her super-guarded in her responses. All the “I respect…” talk sounds rehearsed.

  23. Dawn says:

I think she gave a truthful interview and I don’t find her to be “rude” or “grouchy”. I find it refreshing. The only thing I have to disagree with her is that she “respects” E! television channel, I think that channel is a joke and makes NBC looks ridiculously stuck on sex and nothing more. I think she is a cool young actress and hope to see more of her.

  24. Lucy says:

Not rude, at all. And I don’t think she has anything against Jen, either. The questions were kinda lame, but I really liked her answers.

  25. daisy says:

How can you not love her? Although I do question her taste in men.

  26. I Choose Me says:

Add me to those who liked her answers. I thought she handled herself very well here.

  27. Asiyah says:

I have no opinion on her, but I didn’t find this interview to be rude or grumpy.

  28. Rachel says:

Not rude. Why are they asking her questions about Jennifer Lawrence when it’s HER interview? Seems weird. I’d be miffed too.

  29. shannon says:

Other than her overuse of the word “respect,” there is nothing special about this interview. I do think she is trying to rationalize her partnership w/Jim Beam by saying it’s family operated. Whatever. They offered her money. I hope she doesn’t think by sticking the word “family” in there that anyone is going to think otherwise. IMO, she cannot act and I too, like a lot of people on here, think that Black Swan was ridiculously overrated.

    • MrsBPitt says:

You know what they say, the family that drinks Jim Beam together…um, goes to rehab together?

  30. kimbers says:

Didn’t see read anything wrong with the interview. The questions weren’t very inspiring to say the least.

  31. JosieJ says:

I know people love this girl, and I can’t say I dislike her, but I also don’t get her popularity or why she is praised for her acting.

She is an okay actress. I also don’t get why she is on so many most beautiful or sexy lists. This girl without makeup is average looking at best and I’m being kind with that.

  32. Mindy says:

It is just the old farts in hollywood who are into the Oscars. Pitt, Clooney, Jolie, Bullock – the close to and over forty club. The young ones – they come if they are nominated but don’t really care.

    • Christina says:

      What are you talking about?

Pitt, Jolie,Clooney and Bullock have never been to the Oscars unless they were nominated.

Please tell me the last time any of them went to the Oscars when NOT nominated?

Not to mention Pitt and Jolie don’t go to any awards show or Oscar parties ether unless they are nominated.

  33. Meg says:

it’s cosmo, what are they going to ask about? politics?

  34. PrairieGirl says:

I don’t think it’s rude or bitchy. I think she’s decided where her boundaries are and is responding accordingly. Celebrity interview questions are generally lame softballs. I sure wouldn’t have the patience to answer them.

  35. bobbisue says:

Mila has always been like this. Read interviews with her around the time of Black Swan when there was so much buzz. Or televised interviews with Justin Timberlake abroad where she just lights into the media in Russian. She sort of always has one foot out the door of Hollywood. She’s Ukranian! It is totally different way of being and approaching celebrity. She’s firm in who she is and unapologetic. I think it’s very refreshing.

  36. Paloma says:

    Not one iota of bitchiness.

  37. Jessica says:

Yes! I love her! I’ve seen the interview where she busts out the Russian and it kind of blew me away. How many of her peers in Hollywood are bilingual, yet speak English with zero accent? She strikes me as a highly intelligent woman with little time for bullshit. Which casts a different light on Ashton, frankly. Not to say that intelligent women don’t make dumb choices when it comes to men, but she keeps pretty private so it’s not like she’s shoving her love for him in our faces. And I love that she gets papped without make-up in her gym clothes. Who gives a f(*k?

  38. Karen says:

I didn’t know about the Dior stuff! I thought the question about JLAW was a ridiculous to start, but knowing it was baiting makes it completely inappropriate.

  39. lrm says:

Actually, Mila really was that girl into video games….she is meg on family guy and she has plenty of cash coming in from residuals from there and 70’s shows…she doesn’t need the cash; she hung out with makauley for all those years, actually playing video games, not giving interviews like amber heart about how she likes tomboy things…lol. MK, not the best actress, doesn’t come across as a poseur to me and it’s never been insinuated that she is dating kutcher for PR, unlike amber heard. I think Mila is kinda bitchy/cold Ukranaian woman personality type, actually. LOL No bullsh*t type of persona-remember that interview in russia, with justin timberlake when she schooled the interviewer in russian?

Mckauley lives off his money and stays out of the limelight, as Mila also has done for years. I truly don’t think she cares about fame nor does she need to court new jobs regularly, such as amber heard.
Also, I loathe portman-he attitude is insufferable. I won’t see black swan in part b/c of her; she sucks at acting, too. always looks like she sucking a lemon. I’m glad to hear the movie was overrated. Oscar films pretty much ALWAYS are. Yes, I’m sure even 12 years a slave is so for drama, though possibly better. But Crash, remember that one? I didn’t really like Forest Gump, either. Okay, I won’t go on. Oscar pics are usually popularity votes and the do like a drama but one that resolves itself somehow. but something with faux shock value, but still very ‘safe’ as a subject matter.

    • Leila in wunderland says:

I saw Black Swan and thought it was overrated too, even though I was surprised by the ending. I remember being grossed out for days after the part where Natalie’s character pulls a part of herself out of her stomach. I was thinking “is that intestine?”

  40. Helvetica says:

I like her because she is pretty private and has never been a famewh*re. I still don’t get what she sees in Ashton Kutcher (he seems so dumb) but as long as she is happy.

I wonder how one becomes a part of “The Academy” to vote in the Oscars.

    • pru says:

I wondered how she became part of the academy too (and am glad she votes even though she doesn’t seem to have much interest in them).
Other than that, I like her ‘tude.

    • Boxy Lady says:

The Academy invites you in. You have to be nominated and have the endorsement of at least 2 current Academy members to even be considered, unless you won or were nominated for an Academy Award.

  41. PixieStix says:

Some of the interviewers questions were annoying but I’ve got no problem w/MK. From what I’ve seen of her, she comes across as no-nonsense.

  42. AnneSB says:

I must have missed the train or something, but why was she asked about meeting JLaw? What’s the significance? Sorry, I’m just really confused.

Edit: Oh I just read Shantal’s answer. Question answered.

  43. Denise says:

I’m pretty touchy and I couldn’t see anything rude here at all, even after being lead into it with this article!

  44. Leila in wunderland says:

It’s always funny to me when people who are beautiful or sexy don’t particularly see themselves that way.

  45. lisa2 says:

I don’t know much about her. And I think the interview was fine. I totally agree with her. I wish other celebrities would follow her example and not talk about other celebrities in their interviews. Some of these people name drop any and everyone to get attention.

and I guess I’m in the minority; I like her with Ashton. I think she is good for him.

  46. Tara says:

I don’t see the rudeness or bitchiness at all. The interviewer asked questions, and she answered them. She was brief but didn’t seem overly terse. I do agree Black Swan was overrated. The Mr and I really like Aronofsky films and were really disappointed… though we did end up talking about it for days… what we thought was really going on… how we thought it could’ve been better…

  47. Kimberly says:

The questions were lame and so is the interviewer. If I were Mila, I would be so irritated with the interviewer.

I don’t think Mila was bitchy at all and I like her responses. She just got straight to the point. No fake BS answers.

BTW, I see ppl. mentioning that Mila’s jealous of Lawrence. Oh Phuleaseeeeeee…………. So I guess every female actress is jealous of Lawrence now, right? UTTER BS! Oh give me a damn break!

I don’t even see how these questions about Lawrence were relevant to this interview.

Sorry, I just had to express my frustration about that LOL.
