Helena Bonham Carter has multi-colored dreadlocks now: fabulous or fug?

Here are some photos of Helena Bonham Carter (and Damian Lewis and his wife Helen McCrory) a few nights ago at a benefit for Save the Children. The benefit was “A Night of Reggae” and some of the women at the event did funky, reggae-esque styling (although most of them looked rather normal). HBC was the only one who took it this far. Is this a costume, or is this the way she looks now? Do we live in a world where Helena Bonham Carter has multi-colored dreadlocks?

The event itself sounded like a great fundraiser, and Helena was the co-chair, so maybe that’s why she went all-out. Several reggae artists performed, there was an open auction and a silent auction, which included items like “a private dinner for 12 with Harry Redknapp, a magnificent 12ft by 12ft portrait of Bob Marley by Alex Young of Heavy Artillery Crew and a holiday for four at the Golden Eye Resort in Jamaica” (via WENN).

It wouldn’t bother me at all if this was just something Helena did for this event. But if she has dreads for real now… I would be sad. Because I think so highly of Helena’s hair. I’ve always dreamed of having long, curly hair like Helena. She is a hair-inspiration. But now… not so much. Maybe it was just for the event.

So hoping this was just for the event. Not pretty.

    • Tatjana says:

She looks like Tia Dalma, only worse.

    • MollyB says:

They don’t look like real dreads to me. It looks like her hair was slightly ratted and then twisted into “dreads”. I doubt it is permanent. It would a loooooooong time to naturally create dreads like this. I’m sure we would have seen it before. Also, the multi-colored parts, esp. the green and yellow, look like pieces.

    • Pandy says:

I don’t mind the dreads but her make up is veering into corpse bride territory.

  2. Cecilia says:

I am a big fan of hers but this is definitely fug. She’s entered into clown territory — and I hate clowns!

  3. AG-UK says:

    Just NO NO.

  4. mia girl says:

Looks like Helena’s girlfriends were quite the pranksters a few days back. Sleepover 101… you never fall asleep first!

  5. dorothy says:

I love her. She just wears and does what she likes, doesn’t care about what people think.

    • Poe says:

Yes, she has, and she has always been eccentric. I do love that she doesn’t care, and wears/does what she wants.

  6. smee says:

Never use someone from the Renaissance fair as your stylist!

  7. Dreamyk says:

Love her, but not a great look, particularly with that dress. She was keeping with the theme, though. I do like her nails!

Either Damian is happy to see them, or that’s a cell phone in his pocket. I choose to believe he’s happy..look at those red eyes LOL

  8. mom2two says:

It’s Helena. I would not expect less from her. I don’t think the dreadlocks are permanent (at least I hope not) but I am not surprised she took it this far.

  9. Chinoiserie says:

She is in film called Suffregate that is filming right now, so if these are real she must be done filming. I guess it is possible since she only has supporting role in the film (it is a period piece obviously so the hair is not for the part). I hope these are not permanent.

  10. don't kill me i'm french says:

the daughter of George Clinton and a vampire!

  11. Astrid says:

    She looks like Johnny Depp!

  12. Artemis says:

She’s doing too much. There was a part of me that hoped that her style changed in an organic way over the years but sometimes I think she’s too aware of that cooky imagine. Same with Depp actually. They both had an edge during their early & mid-careers. Outsiders who were ‘in’. They were cool and beautiful without (seemingly) trying. Then mainstream success happened and it all went to pot! The style became OTT cooky and unkempt. HBC didn’t used to dress so Gaga-esque. She used to wash her hair and wear colour-coordinated shoes damnit 🙂

    • bns says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. She’s too aware of her eccentric persona and she’s trying way too hard lately. And I agree about Depp, too.

  13. Evi says:

She reminds me of Boy George in the 80s. But I have to say that Boy George was prettier.
    She looks like a mess.

  14. PunkyMomma says:

    Sorry, Helena.

  15. FingerBinger says:

If this were anyone else I would say ‘try-hard’,but HBC has been wearing wacky outfits for years. It’s part of her persona. Unlike Gaga this is not an act.

  16. Kathryn says:

I love her she can do no wrong in my eyes, but I don’t think it’s permanent .. It was a reggae night she dressed up and had fun with it!
Ps if u want to see how beautiful her hair was when she was young check out A Room With A View… Her hair is to die for!

  17. Isadora says:

I love her. She’s a great actress, interesting person and doesn’t give a single f… what people think about her. Therefore it won’t bother her that I think this look is pretty awful. Sorry.

  18. CK says:

Isn’t this a bit tacky? It just feels like cultural appropriation gone wrong. I feel like if any other actress would have shown up to a event with a Reggae theme with dreadlocks in the color of the Jamaican flag, they would get torn up in the press for many other reasons.

  19. Kelly says:

I like the idea, I just don’t think those particular colors work. Needs a darker shade or just darker colors in general. Purple dreadlocks would look great on her.

  20. TWINK says:

    Her skin looks greenish.

  21. Karen says:

You know, I don’t mind the dreads if they’re a one night thing. It’s the matching eye shadow that was horrific. As for cultural appropriation, I really see it as no different than the punk-themed met gala. Punk and Reggae are both subcultures. There’s something to be said for cultural oversensitivity these days.

More importantly, Colin Firth was there – why no pictures of that?!

  22. QQ says:

Oh Naaahhh I love her but this is a classic case of #WhitePeopleDreads

  23. Jenna says:

While I know I must be in the massive minority – I kinda think they look cute on her. She’s one of the few actors and performers that remain constantly in my own personal ‘dream dinner out with’ wish (she, Pink, and Terry Pratchett before he passes would be a combo I’d require horse tranqs to keep from flipping out over) and I really love her determination to wear whatever she wants, whenever, however.

Sad but true – while my own 6’2 self will never look right channeling her pixie meets victorian street performer style, almost everything she wears or does is met with a longing wish for my own closet. And likely is why so much of my closet IS outside the norm. She reminds me to just have fun and remember its all just wrapping paper anyway!

    • Amy Tennant says:

Invite me to that dinner! I second all of that. Well, I’m not 6’2″, but all the rest. 🙂

  24. MrsBPitt says:

She does know that people can see her, right???

  25. bettyrose says:

HBC can do no wrong so even this is okay.

  26. Ciremirage says:

Her lox are called double enders made from synthetic material (plastic) and are wrapped around her real hair.

I’ve been making these and dread falls for 15 years… it’s not a look for everyone.

  27. Zigggy says:

    Dreads are gross.

  28. Size Does Matter says:

Was it a Jamaican zombie corpse bride party? If so, she totally nailed it.

  29. Tara says:

They’re just extensions, I had them years ago.

  30. SnarkGirl says:

    I love this woman – she does not give a f*ck. 🙂

  31. TheCountess says:

There’s a difference between making a joke and becoming the joke, and I’m sad to say, I think Helena has crossed the line.

  32. LL2 says:

Fabulous with a Capital F! Do your thing Helen and ignore the haters. You are obviously not living your life to please them.

  33. Cel says:

I love her but George Clinton did this first and better.

  34. IrkkiPekka says:

Seems like everyone should maybe just calm down on the hair- how are we even contemplating that this isn’t just for a reggae themed evening? They’re RASTA COLORED DREADS for pete’s sake! Of course they’re just temporary!

  35. MissTrial says:

She has such a beautiful face , especially the shape of her face , and lovely hair. That is, when you can see them, underneath her costumes.

  36. ZANDI says:

BELLATRIX!! She was definitely channeling… only difference is the pop of colour

  37. tealily says:

Oh, I’m sure it’s temporary. I think it’s fun. Don’t sweat it, guys.

    • *Laowai* says:

I agree, it is definitely just temporary. Helena is one of those professionals who takes their role as an entertainer very seriously. She tends to go all out for events and promotions, exc, as an entertainer. I’m thinking that this is just her way of doing exactly that for this particular event.

  38. annaloo. says:

At this point, Helena can do whatever she wants.

  39. Tig says:

I had no idea Damien’s wife was her!! She is my fav Anna K! What a cute couple!

Re HBC- agreed, she is right at the line of self-parody. She was a great Elizabeth Taylor!

  40. themummy says:

Flawless, independent, and very secure with who she is. Love her!

  41. Lexie says:

Damien lewis annoys me and his wife even more so. She constantly looks like she’s clinging on to him for dear life always and he always looks irritated with her.

  42. qwerty says:

Haha, love that pic of the 3 of them. Helen McCrory is great in Peaky Blinders.

  43. Jennifer12 says:

To paraphrase Rebecca Walker, old punks don’t die…. we just dye our hair.

  44. Lilacflowers says:

That dress is actually rather subdued for HBC.

  45. ark138 says:

Just don’t say her name three times.

  46. Nina says:

She looks like Talkatoo Cockatoo from “Zoobilee Zoo”.

  47. lambert says:

I, too, love Helena’s quirky style. But I think its the makeup in combo with the colored dreads that is bugging me about her look in these pics. And does her face also look a tad yellow?
