Karl Lagerfeld: ‘Everything is controlled by Choupette, she is a kept woman’

choupette2

It feels like FOREVER since we’ve heard any news about the most important fashionista in the world, Choupette Lagerfeld. Choupette was discussed in her daddy’s new Guardian interview at some length, and of course Karl Lagerfeld had some magnificent shade for lots of other people and things. But no shade for Choupette. This man… he is a late-in-life cat person. Choupette is everything to him, daughter, wife, friend, companion and his greatest love. You can read the full Guardian piece here, and here are some highlights (including several magnificent one-liners)

Sloppy: “To be sloppy after 25 is a problem. You have to be really fresh to wear stuff that doesn’t look fresh.”

On tattoos: “it’s like sleeping in a printed T-shirt, you will never get clean again”

Shade for other designers: “Tell me, why do former young designers who are now in their middle 40s have to redo the 1960s and 70s. Why they cannot invent fashion for today?”

Cara Delevingne: “She is not a standout beauty. Was it Bacon who said, ‘There is not beauty without some strangeness in the proportions’?”

On selfies: “They are this horrible thing where you are distorted. The chin is too big, the head is too small. No, this is electronic masturbation.”

He does 17 collections a year: “If you like what you do, you don’t count.”

Choupette: Lagerfeld claims he gets picture updates of Choupette’s activities from the cat’s maid every hour. As proof, he shows me the most recent one of her resting on a pile of books at his home. “Everything is controlled by her. She wakes me up at 7am because she wants me to bring her fresh croquettes, she won’t touch food from the night before, she gets offers for food commercials but it is out of the question. She is a kept woman.”

Making affordable Chanel sneakers: “You cannot dance at three parties on the same evening. I always said to my investors to put it on another level and make it affordable. I think that’s a modern attitude… Everyone is wearing them. I thought it was an elegant idea to put them with dressy things. If you look at fashion from the 1840s women wore flat shoes. Stella Tennant, in real life, I’ve hardly ever seen her in stilettos.”

His work ethic: “I always think I’m lazy, maybe I could do better, I could make more effort and I always have the feeling that there is a glass wall that I cannot get through. But maybe when I get through, then it’s over.”

[From The Guardian]

The Guardian writer talks a lot about how savvy Lagerfeld is, and how this current version we see of him if much more humorous, like everything he’s doing now is being done with a wink and nudge. I think that’s what the Chanel-Walmart Paris show was about – Karl making fun of fashion, trolling everyone. And people are still eating it up.

As for Choupette and how she’s a kept woman who wakes up her daddy at 7 am and demands to be fed… my God, Choupette is really living the life, right?

Choupette should have been the Vogue cover. I’m starting to actually like him, or his interviews, in spite of myself.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

May have to agree with you on this. . .

    • lower-case deb says:

i agree about the cover. she should have two covers and at least one fashion spread.
one as Choupette Lagerfeld, the other in the style of Mercy Kardashian.

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

yes he has an acidic sense of humour. Choupette is much prettier than any of the Kardashians – I’ll bet Kim is jealous and hope she doesn’t get more surgery to look like Choupette.

    • LadyMTL says:

Oh man, I would so love to have Choupette on the cover of Vogue! If someone as downmarket as KK can get it, then someone as fab as Choupette *needs* to have it, lol.

    • katy says:

The ever lovely Choupette was on the cover of German Vogue, so I don’t think it’s a stretch for her to get an American Vogue cover.

  2. blue marie says:

Who knew Choupette was a fan of Wal-Mart, it boggles the mind.. She has made me like him even more.

    • InLike says:

Walmart.. That is what hell is. I wish I was a biochemist and could test all the toxins used to produce their dinnerware and house fixtures.

Girlfirend called me one day from there and said “theres a sticker on this dinner plate. Says WARNING: (dinner) plate paint could contain lead, should I chance it? It’s sooo pretty and the price is sooo low.”

Yeah sure eat off it , and LOWer your IQ. Pfft.

  3. mena says:

How tall – or rather, how short – is Cara D? I know Lagerfeld wears stacked heels, but even in those he is not a tall man. And yet he is quite a bit taller than Cara. Meh, models today.

    • InvaderTak says:

I wondered that too. So Google has her at 5’7″. She says 5’8″. One article said 5’9″. I think 5’7″ is closer to the truth. Not short, but not model tall either.

      • mena says:

Maybe even shorter than that. Did a little Googling too and Cara doesn’t look much taller than Michelle Rodriguez & MRod is 5’5″. She looks tall, which I guess is all they want.

    • Lola says:

The idea that models are tall is a fraud. Kate Moss was supposed to be 5’7″, but then Johnny Depp is taller than her and he’s only about 5’5″.

  4. Cecilia says:

I have always loved Karl. He speaks his mind in a most unusual way & is unapologetic. He owns his shit.

  5. Jaderu says:

Never met a cat that wasn’t a diva.
    He’s such a delicious troll.

  6. freebunny says:

Choupette is so cute, lovely girl.

  7. starrywonder says:

    lol love karl!

  8. QQ says:

    FULL ON CHOUPETTE FANGIRLING

  9. InvaderTak says:

I can’t help but like this guy. He doesn’t pretend to be anything he’s not or BS in his comments. And I usually agree with him.

  10. Patricia says:

I love what he says about selfies being electronic masturbation. SO TRUE and correctly stated. He knows what he’s talking about.

  11. ctkat1 says:

I really enjoy his obsession over Choupette- it’s amazing how much it humanizes him.

  12. Scottiegirl says:

I love the selfie comment calling it “electronic masturbation.” It is so true. I have never taken a selfie and never will.

  13. Eleonor says:

Choupette should teach classes about gold digging.

  14. Jedi says:

Why didnt they ask him about the Vogue cover??? i need to know Karl’s thoughts on it, especially after Naomi’s amazing shade and laughing at Kimye in an interview.

    • katy says:

Agree – whoever did this interview missed a great opportunity for some classic Lagerfeld shade.

  15. Emily C. says:

I like Karl Lagerfeld. I LIKE KARL LAGERFELD. I used to despise this guy, and now I think he’s great! A cat changed him completely. I love it.

It makes me think of the L.M. Montgomery book in which someone told a little boy, “find something to love, or the devil will get you.” They didn’t mean the actual devil with horns n’stuff; they meant evil would dwell in your heart if love did not enter it. The little boy found a kitten to love.

  16. Bella says:

I just love Karl, his interviews are always funny and amusing and I love his love for Choupette!!

  17. Cupcake says:

I want to hear more about Choupette!! Where’s my hourly update?!

  18. jhava says:

sounds like he is trolling Cara Delevigne a little bit, like he picked her for that show because it was somewhat satirical.

  19. Blue says:

I just love cats. So, it’s sweet to see how much Lagerfeld loves little Choupette. It makes him more human definitely more likeable. He can come of like such a rude and catty (pun intended) person most of the time. His interviews are epic in the amount of shade he throws at everyone.

  20. xxx says:

I have it in very good word from someone close to the industry that he has not designed a single thing in years…along with Christian louboutin, when he makes his own shoes they are hideous. Just a little gossip mill for the weekend. Basically all clothing designers recycle the same people to create fashion and every year the actual real clothing designers choose to go where the best offer is. Very few famous designers actually create things. And yes the majority of male designers are gay, many are plain Americans… Tom Ford is from Texas! He’s promoted as European.

  21. here's Wilson says:

well I guess I’ll be dirty FOREVER then… and his cat looks like my Milo

  22. raindrop says:

PLEASE let flats overtake heels. I only wear flats, and there’s a serious dearth of gorgeous styles.

  23. Carolyn says:

Choupette could have designed Chanel’s last few collections better than Karl. He’s lost the plot….”make it affordable”??!!!

  24. linda says:

He prolly wears all white when he hangs with Choupette, and then when he’s in his professional black, he has keep her at arms length.
