Tom Hiddleston: Ben Cumberbatch ‘is one of my best friends, it’s that simple’

117380PCN_Crimson24

I am about to cause a disturbance in the Dragonfly Force: I don’t think Tom Hiddleston ever looks good with dark hair. Ever. He looks his best when he’s close to his natural hair color (a strawberry blonde) with some scruff or a goatee. Otherwise, Tommy just looks creepy. I’m including a few more photos of Tommy this week on the set of Crimson Peak in Toronto (we had some pics yesterday too).

These days, I try to spread the Hiddles out because there hasn’t been a lot of news, but you’re getting Tommy posts two days in a row. You are welcome, Dragonflies. The reason I’m writing about him again? A new interview with the Toronto Star to promote Only Lovers Left Alive! This is the very first line of the piece: “Sitting in a hotel room listening to British actor Tom Hiddleston recite Hamlet is not a bad way to start a day.” Tommy never changes. Some highlights from the piece:

What influenced Tom’s vampire Adam in OLLA: “It’s interesting and I have thought about (Bowie) but I also thought about Syd Barrett, too,” said Hiddleston of the late co-founder of Pink Floyd, whose musical genius was marred by mental illness and addiction. “Syd was a nice reference for us visually and also Mick Jagger in (the 1970 drama) Performance where he’s playing a Bohemian living in a dilapidated house. We talked about Hamlet as well.”

Tommy always brings it around to Shakespeare: Hiddleston said he was inspired by his character’s “sad disillusioned spirit” to reread Hamlet — also taking a cue from a character in the script — and found “so many of these lines could have been said by Adam,” before quoting several of the Danish prince’s speeches.

He doesn’t feel like OLLA really is a vampire movie: “It felt like we were making a love story between two quite sophisticated creatures who happen to be vampires. It is a wonderful prism from which to explore immortality.”

Vampires take the long view: “For Adam, immortality has become a burden and he’s become depressed with the direction of human activity, an age which has a great fear of imagination. Eve can say ‘we’ve lived through worse.’ She’s got the long view.”

Dancing with Tilda Swinton: “That was a very special day, a first coming-together with Tilda and as a sequence, it speaks volumes but wordlessly.”

Taking the part in Crimson Peak after Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out: “He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that,” Hiddleston said of Cumberbatch. They met in 2010, playing officers in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.

Doing a good horror film: “It’s a great script and I’ve been a fan of Guillermo del Toro forever. I think he’s amazing. He’s made no secret this is an English-language film that’s very close to the sensibility of his Spanish-language films. I’ve always wanted to make a good horror film and there’s no one at the moment in the world of Guillermo’s equal.”

[From The Toronto Star]

We could literally spend DAYS and weeks parsing this: “He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that.” Tommy has a BFF!!!! And it’s Benedict Cumberbatch! Benedict is his big brother. Tommy needs a father figure and Benny is it. Do they go over to each other’s houses? Do they party together? Or do they just do sleepovers and talk about their dream girls whilst braiding each other’s hair? Dear Hollywood: make THAT movie. Two Englishmen BFFs who hang out together, get drunk and play with each other’s hair. It would make billions of dollars.

    No no no! There’s no braiding of the ginger curls.

    They quote poetry and prose while sipping on the finest spirits or wine.

    And then watch rugby.

    • Nighty says:

      Agree… with LadyS on NO to to brading of both the ginger and the strawberry curls…
      and also with Kaiser… Don’t like him in dark hair, natural, blonde, or light brown hair suits him so much better…
      *Yummmii*

      • LadySlippers says:

        Nighty,

        Let’s be real, strawberry is still ginger. 😉

      • Nighty says:

        You know, for me (since I’m not a complicated woman and hair colours drive me insane – besides, English is a foreign language, so names of hair colours are totally different )
        there’s blond, ginger, brown, grey and black; then just use light or dark before the colours.. for instance: mine is dark blonde (according to hairdressers ; I actually think it’s light brown with blond-copperish highlights, but ok… ) and there you go…
        these auburn, strawberry blonde, yaba daba doo…. too complicated…

    • frisbeejada says:

      Yes totally agree, except that they’ll watch Rugby and interminable Cricket matches as well…oh dear, my flames are diminishing at the mere thought….

      • LadySlippers says:

        Good call!

        Cricket and probably some opera too. Lol

      • frisbeejada says:

        The opera I can cope with (as long as it’s a bit of Puccini or a sublime bit of Mozart and I mean a bit NOT an entire Opera) but the Cricket – well it just makes me lose the will to live 🙂

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        I’m not aware of either gent expressing a particular desire to watch cricket. Are you sure they weren’t referring to the insect rather than the game. It is just as interesting I assure you!

      • Hiddles forever says:

        They seem kind of football guys (soccer for Americans), I don’t seem them watching cricket at all!

        Lol cricket is boring, incredibly boring!

      • frisbeejada says:

        No, regrettably I’m sure I have read interviews where both have said they enjoyed Rugby and Cricket BUT you may all be right – which cheers me up no end. Rugby – I can do Rugby, big hairy men rushing around chasing a ball and knocking each other over – they have big thighs (pauses for thought) and er stuff.
        @ Secret Squirrel – this wouldn’t be Jimminy Cricket would it? I could cope with Jimminy and I can see Tom particularly giving him some serious study…for self presentation tips and the like…he’s already got the outfit!
        @ Hiddles Forever – yes cricket is the single most boring game ever invented by a Brit – and we have invented a few (golf, snooker, darts) – it’s a kind of reverse talent really.

      • icerose says:

        No they watch tennis and go to rock concerts where sit in the VIP dancing, playing ping pong and holding hands in a strictly platonic manner. They both use to play Rugby Tom played for Cambridge until he forgot to take his makeup off after running from a theatre rehearsal. I have never heard Tom waxing lyrically over a rugby match as he does with tennis.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Is cricket on par with curling in the boredom department?

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @icerose

        “They both use to play Rugby Tom played for Cambridge until he forgot to take his makeup off after running from a theatre rehearsal.”

        Did you make this up or did it happen for real? I spilled my morning tea over this one lol XD

      • icerose says:

        @Hiddles forever Yes it is true -he told the story in one of his interviews-it seems the coach noticed and pointed it out” I can remember where I read it but definitely from his own mouth. He did give up Rugby in the end

      • jammypants says:

        It really happened. I remember reading that interview as well haha. He ran from theatre to the field and played a whole match with makeup on.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @jammypants

        Maybe that is why he didn’t become a rugby player lol

      • jammypants says:

        I’m sure he was the prettiest player of the match 😉

    • joe spider says:

      I would say no to a scrum down with Tom any day!

  2. kri says:

    Hmm. I like Tom. Lovely ginger, great voice, amazing actor. But for some reason, he just doesn’t ice my cake. Give me a Hardy Batch and some Elba a la mode-that makes me happy!

    • gefeylich says:

      Yeah, he does nothing for me either. He’s rather like the UK version of Bradley Cooper: superficial, ubiquitous, overeager for attention, a decent actor whose fame is disproportionate to his talent (no, tell a lie – Hiddleston is a MUCH better actor than Cooper).

      I also agree that unlike Cumberbatch, who becomes exponentially more attractive with dark hair, Hiddleston’s dark hair looks smarmy, fake and utterly washes him out. He was at his most attractive when he was in “Wallander” and has never been that handsome since.

      • Intro Outro says:

        It’s funny how you make your private opinion sound like a final universal truth 😉

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Intro Outro
        That’s a common thing all over the internet, about any topic 😀

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Hiddles forever:

        I’m a firm believer in the power of IMO ;D Or at least IMO-style wording. Doesn’t antagonise others, fosters normal discussion and even – wonder of wonders! – may help your opponent agree with your POV.

      • jammypants says:

        I agree with you ladies. Also, the argument lost me as soon as I saw Cumberbatch slying get squeezed into the Hiddle put down. It’s kind of tiresome seeing one get put down in favor of the other. That doesn’t happen in Ben posts.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @jammypants

        Pretty sure it happens in some Ben’s posts all over the internet, I came across a couple of them on tumblr, maybe not here though. Yes, I agree it is tiresome, it is like people eating chips and asking ‘where is the fish’? God I can eat chips on their own!!

      • Intro Outro says:

        The sad thing is that somebody like me who is predisposed to like Cumberbatch but not yet knows his body of work that well, starts feeling somewhat resentful towards him as a result of all this shading. Which is a pity =/ I absolutely loved Cumby in Frankenstein (he and Miller saved for me what i thought was an extremely uneven production), i loved how nuanced and beautifully reserved he was in 12 Years a Slave.. Nah. I’ll keep getting acquainted with his work and ignoring this unpleasantness.

      • Nighty says:

        I believe there isn’t so much shading as you mentioned.. Besides in Cumby’s posts there are also people calling him alien, lizzard and other stuff, theres also always a comparison between the two.. .
        I can only speak for myself but I love them both equally… 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @jammypants, it seems to be constant, doesn’t it? By pointing it out, we have seemed to reduce the occurrences. It was rampant here few months ago, but it still occurs. It is tiresome and there is just no need.

        @Hiddles, I adore chips/fries, live for them. And I don’t like fish. Chips by themselves, yes please! (Or with a tasty steak smothered in bordelaise sauce.)

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Lilacflower

        I just had chips!! 🙂

        @IntroOutro

        I think you are on the right path. I saw B.C. only in Sherlock and started to watch part of his works. He is an awesome actor. Who cares about his looks and who is compared with 😉

      • Isadora says:

        I refused to watch Sherlock for the longest time – not only because my inner Holmes fanatic screamed “Sacrilege!” at the idea of a modern version, but also because Cumberbatch did look nothing like my personal vision of Sherlock Holmes. I’ve seen Rupert Everett as Holmes long, long ago and that came much closer.

        BUT… I’ve watched the Reichenbach fall epsiode when it was on TV in my country and I totally got sucked in. The rooftop scene between Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott (as Moriarty ♥) was mesmerizing. So he won me over against all odds. 😉

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Isadora hubby and I came across a re-run of the second series and got sucked in. Hubby is a major Sherlock fan too and he is happy with B.C. choice, although my favourite is Martin Freeman (I like the average guy, sorry ladies!).
        Oh well.. Confession, I really like Andrew Scott too 😉

      • jammypants says:

        I agree ladies. Both are wonderful actors and they’ve got to be the nicest celebrities featured on this site.

        @Lilac, it has indeed calmed down. At least now I know which comments to roll my eyes at haha

        @InnieOutie, yea I’d ignore the fan behavior. He’s a really lovely guy. I’m not sure why his fans are they way they are. If you ignore what people say, you can enjoy all the Hiddlesbatching to your heart’s content 😀

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Isadora:

        “I refused to watch Sherlock for the longest time – not only because my inner Holmes fanatic screamed “Sacrilege!” at the idea of a modern version, but also because Cumberbatch did look nothing like my personal vision of Sherlock Holmes.”

        I’m still refusing to watch it ;P And mostly for the same reasons – read all books, saw excellent productions, don’t feel the need to revisit a world which i already know very well. I’d rather spend my time on something completely new ^_~ But i’m very happy that you’re enjoying the show, ladies! From all i’ve heard, it’s very HQ and really worth it (except maybe season 3? I heard some unfavourable opinions on it 😉 )

        @Hiddles forever, jammypants:

        I’m doing exactly that! Plus look are not exactly a problem when an actor can disappear into his role and make his looks an integral part of it. So far, BC has managed to do that for me.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Intro Outro

        The first two episodes of series 3 made us feel miserable… my hubby was short of throwing a shoe at the tv shouting “did we wait two years for this?”… and he is a quiet guy… It is not the episodes were ‘really’ that bad, however they shouldn’t build that kind of expectations around the show before even they are filming…. If BC and M. Freeman became too famous for the show, maybe they could kill Sherlock off and that’s it.

        Now even Hiddles has been thrown into the cauldron and Freeman just came out saying “no Sherlock until 2016″… well if they can’t commit, they end the show or producers choose someone else…

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Hiddles forever:

        Aww poor hubby! XD I know the feeling though and i agree about unnecessary hyping leading to disappointment. That’s something the PR people should be quite careful about.

        Don’t know about Hiddleston in Sherlock.. If his part is big and if the storyline is well-written.. Then maybe i’ll watch ;P

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Intro Outro, my understanding is that the whole Tom in Sherlock thing was that somebody asked Mark Gatiss if Tom was going to play the third Sherlock brother. Gatiss laughed, said it was doubtful, but then said that he could ask him. The story seems to have taken on a life of its own since then.

  3. sighs says:

    Uh oh. You’ve opened Pandora’s box with one sentence. Way to crash the interwebs, Kaiser.

    • Hello Kitty says:

      We’re going to break the Internet today with this post. For reals.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      “Ben Cumberbatch is one of my best friends, it is that simple”

      He probably counts every person he has ever worked with or met as one of his best friends, so this probably isn’t as cute as it sounds!

      • 'p'enny says:

        @Secret Squirrel

        Hiddles does seem to make friends quickly. But, he has said in the past that Benny is the friend and vice versa that they phone when they need to talk about what they are going through in their business. Who knows? a lot fan bitching.

        Tilda has gone on record recently calling Tom her friend, yet they never met until they started filming. The best one ever, is Marvel hard-nut Kevin Feige calling Tom, ‘his good friend’ on camera!! Tom called Jessica Chastain his good friend, yet no one believed him, until this film started. And now he has Jim Beaver, following him like a lap-dog. And Elsa Patakay has come out and said Tom is special friend of Chris and her.

        or is calling everyone friend these days natural, i don’t call people i work with as friends. they are always colleagues. LOL

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @’p’enny

        Same here. I don’t call people I work with ‘friends’, usually just colleagues.

      • jammypants says:

        He sounds like a hippy child. Everyone is a friend and lover bahaha

      • icerose says:

        Penny Tilda has gone on record as saying she was friends w with Tom through her friendship with Joanna Hogg prior to filming OLLA. London is a small world when it comes to actors doing screen and stage. He was also good friends with Carey Mulligan and still gets together with her and her partner

      • Isadora says:

        I guess Tilda is one of those persons who calls those people friends she really likes – not just people she regularly hangs out with.

        And from my experience the atmosphere on sets, in theatres, in operas etc. is just.. different. I especially know it from dancers and they really have other (less?) boundaries with new people they work with and are rather close – maybe because the job requires such physical proximity and intimacy that your attitude towards the other person is different than when you sit in an office and talk to your colleagues only at the coffee station.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @’p’enny, the set Tilda claims they met on was “Unrelated.” She has been friends with Joanna Hogg for a long time and was invited to the “Unrelated” set where she met Tom and they have stayed in touch over the years. Tom has gone on road trips with Chris Hemsworth and his brother Liam In fact, they both said one of those trips was the inspiration for the bickering in the space ship during Thor 2. Tom, as Loki, was acting the way Liam acts when Chris drives.

      • icerose says:

        Well it seems he isa popular young man Mark Ruffalo just tweeted him saying he is missing him on the Avengers set and congratulating him on OLLA

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Lilacflowers:

        What you’re saying about Tom and Chris being friends in real life and not only during PR tours is somewhat (pleasantly) surprising to me. From a number of interviews with CH and TH shot during Avengers/Thor 2 promo campaigns i got this feeling that Chris was somewhat irritated with Tom o_O I might be COMPLETELY wrong of course since i tend to over-analyse things. I remember watching that Russian talk-show with Chris, Jeremy and Tom and thinking that Chris sounded pretty irritated with Hiddles. It might be just me though.

      • Isadora says:

        Intro Outro, you’re not the only one! I also got a slightly facepalming/eye-rolling vibe from Chris towards Tom. But I think it’s a bit his general attitude. Maybe Tom is like a hyperactive, slightly annoying sibling that you still love. 😉 He said some pretty nice things about Tom although he doesn’t seem to be as over(t)ly enthusiastic as giddy Hiddles.

      • Intro Outro says:

        Oh good, i thought i was being paranoid. Yeah, i also decided it might just as well be the fact that their temperaments and attitudes towards this whole promotion thing are very different. The fact that Loki more or less overshadowed Thor and all critics were raving about Hiddles probably didn’t really improve the climate.. Although i want to think Chris is above that, he seems a genuinely nice and decent guy to me. And yeah, i absolutely believe that sometimes hyperactive hyper-enthusiastic Hiddles is just too much to handle. Don’t know if he’s the same in private, probably much quieter, but still.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Intro Outro, when I saw that Russian show with them and Jeremy Renner, I got the sense that Chris’s reactions were based on the fact that he had to wait for the translation in his ear piece, with that insane studio audience drowning it out, while Tom was able to understand some of what was being said without the translation and responded with some Russian. Chris’s reaction seemed to be: “Of course, he speaks Russian while i sit here looking confused” and then the two of them were talking to each other, which got them scolded by the host. Meanwhile, Renner looked like he thought the whole thing surreal..

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @icerose, Mark Ruffalo may be missing the day care Tom provided for his son during the first Avengers. The kid was on the set a lot and just followed Tom around all the time.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Lilacflowers:

        I remember how Hiddles was YET AGAIN showing off and instead of just hitting that hammer swung it around a couple of times and Chris told him to “just do it already!” ;D Also, from what i know, that host is known for his extremely sharp tongue. He mocks his guests – albeit in a rather smart and subtle way – and doesn’t care about making them uncomfortable.

        Re: Tom the baby-sitter: aww, a man who is capable of patiently entertaining kids is major turn-on for me 😛

  4. Freebunny says:

    Lol at these two name-droppers.
    I wonder if it’s a game for them: you name-drop me, I name-drop you, you bring the pop corn and we watch the fangirls going crazy.

  5. Alex says:

    I love Hiddles.

  6. Leah says:

    Father figure? Hiddles is only 4 years younger than Cumby. I don’t know why people act as if Hiddles is so young and this puppy. He is well into his early 30s.

    • Hiddles forever says:

      Lol I laughed at that too. Tom is 33 😀

    • LadySlippers says:

      And I totally think they’re contemporaries too.

    • Liberty says:

      I just read online that he dated Kat Dennings of 2 Broke Girls at some point??

      • Hiddles forever says:

        One of the rumours, it was never confirmed. J. Chastain is another one, but she denied that.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      @Leah, I also don’t understand why people seem to think he needs a father figure since he has a father and he claims their relationship is good. His stories about how his father helped him prepare for War Horse were quite touching.

  7. blue marie says:

    Aww, the true life story of The Tortoise and The Hare

    Now I’m going to go drool over pics of Alex leaving the gym..

  8. Dani says:

    I actually only like Hiddles with dark hair. There are pics from when he first played Loki, in between shoots/days off (green shirt black pants) with black hair and he look soooo good.

    • LadySlippers says:

      Have you not seen Wallander? His ginger curls are in fine form!!! It might get you to reconsider your thoughts…

      • Nighty says:

        Definitely looking good in that ginger hair… yummi….

        *dreaming I’m caressing his curls… *

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        I would say Magnus was more blonde than ginger, but that could be deliberate highlights to make him look more “Swedish”. It did vary slightly between season 1 and 2.

        That said however, I can honestly say I don’t give a damn what color his hair is, or even if he has hair. He is so much more than the sum total of his cranial follicle density and coloration!

      • icerose says:

        I loved his blond curls although I do think he had highlights because in his Eton photos he is not that blond.
        The black is okay bit Hal is still one of my favourite looks as well

      • Isadora says:

        Oh… Prince Hal was perfect. (And also less ginger than his Henry.)

        But in the end I also don’t really care about his hair colour. As long as it isn’t green, he would look a bit like a Leprechaun with that.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        The curls in Wallender were more dirty or ash blond than ginger. My own hair color is actually quite similar – it gets lighter overall in summer because the sun streaks it and then in winter it looks darker with blond highlights. Agree with Isadora that Prince Hal hair is perfect but I don’t care about his hair color either.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Lady Slippers

        I still have to see Wallander!! Did I miss something?

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Hiddles Forever, Wallender shows lots of long curls. Lots of exasperated sighs. Lots of answering the phone and researching databases on the computer while exasperated. All with long curls.

      • joe spider says:

        @Hiddles forever

        don;t watch it if you are feeling depressed. Not because of Tom but because Branagh plays it very much as a depressive. Watch when you are feeling sunny.

        And don’t miss the very end of the last one Tom is in!! (AT least I think it is that one.)

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @lilacflowers
        @joe spider

        Ok, not to watch if I am feeling down.. Well easy, I am always happy! 😉

        ETA which series is Tom in? All of them?

      • joe spider says:

        Tom Was in the first two series of Wallander. But he couldn’t do the third because of film commitments:

        Magnus Martinsson / Martinsson
        – The Fifth Woman (2010) … Magnus Martinsson
        – The Man Who Smiled (2010) … Magnus Martinsson
        – Faceless Killers (2010) … Magnus Martinsson
        – One Step Behind (2008) … Martinsson
        – Firewall (2008) … Martinsson
        – Sidetracked (2008)… Martinsson

        They are all findable 😉

        He was also quite chunky built in Wallander.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Hiddles forever, as the others say, it is rather depressing, with Branagh’s character and other characters being depressed all the time and even the scenery somehow is very bleak. Tom’s character is a minor one, who, instead of being depressed like everyone else, is in a constant state of exasperation, usually with Branagh’s character. He also seems to be the only one in the entire police station who knows how to operate a computer.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @joe spider @lilacflowers

        Thanks!! I’ll have a look online if I can find those episodes.

        @lilacflowers So he is an energised bunny even there… with blonde curls!! LOL maybe his role is not that depressing!! 😀

  9. itsetsyou says:

    “Only Lovers Left Alive” was a total bore. It was very obviously Tilda’s movie and she walked around with the smile of a cat who stole butter.

    I agree – Tom looks better with lighter hair.

    • joe spider says:

      Actually I enjoyed it and they both have got good reviews.

      • 'p'enny says:

        @itsetyou —-> Twighlight is that way….

        i loved it – the chemistry between the two was first rate. I’m dying for the DVD.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        i enjoyed it immensely earlier this evening and may try to go back to see it a second time this weekend.

    • icerose says:

      Generally it has had excellent reviews with both Tom and Tilda being praised for their on screen chemistry and performances but their are always going to be people who prefer their films to have more action and more focus on a story. I am the reverse action films and blockbusters have a tendency to bore me and I much prefer my indie films.

    • Leah says:

      I thought it was a terrific movie. Not a fast mover though…it required patience.

    • Alex says:

      I loved that movie actually! I didn’t that I’d like it so much.

    • jojobean says:

      I found OLLA boring as well. I love my indie films, but if I accuse action and other mainstream movies of being trite and snarmy, then I can’t turn around and applaud the same thing in an indie film. Which OLLA was. Think of the Detroit scenes, and please show me one that wasn’t trite (Jack White: Check, Extoil the virtual of a now extinct automotive industry: Check). OLLA had a great atmosphere, but when I tried to dig a little deeper, ugh.

  10. “It is a wonderful prism from which to explore immortality”. Sigh. I seriously think it might be his adeptness at turning a phrase that makes me weak in the knees. Now there would be an interesting social experiment. Blindfold please….

    • LadySlippers says:

      Lol

      I think both BC and TH are equally guilty of that crime.

      • Indeed. I went right down the Hiddleston rabbit hole the moment I happened upon him talking about “delayed gratification” with Cookie Monster one afternoon while I was changing channels. I nearly snorted my latte out my nose.

      • Nighty says:

        Oh the cookie monster… delayed gratification….
        *major sigh*

      • Hiddles forever says:

        Exactly! They play with words so well that when I listen to them.. I feel a total idiot and speechless…

      • Intro Outro says:

        Have you ladies seen TH’s comment on Exhibition? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saZEHfM2IjM The stuff he says about Viviane Albertine and Liam Gillick being brave in how they approached their roles and decided “not to display any superficial charisma”. This is what makes me think that Hiddles has much more substance than just privileged education.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Thanks for that clip, Intro Outro. He sounds good. Looks good. And the film clip has lots of action from those beautiful hands.

      • Isadora says:

        Thanks for the link! He looks great in the video! The pink tie! 😀 I might watch the movie, although I think Hiddles’ role in it is really tiny. Sadly so, because him being a slightly slimy real estate manager… I just love that.

      • jammypants says:

        What a beauty.

    • icerose says:

      Me to -its ability to put over dialogise and the silliest pf phrases that makes me love watching him. He has some wonderful lines in OLLA and his delivery is spot on.

      • Anne tommy says:

        I saw Exhibition today and really enjoyed it, nothing much happens but it is still interesting and quite moving. I like all three of the Joanna Hogg films, there is something strangely fascinating about them. And they have great roles for middle aged women who may be affluent but who still have some internal sadness. Tom’s role is quite small compared to Unrelated or Archipelago but he looks and sounds lovely.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Anne tommy:

        I love Hogg, i’d watch Exhibition even if Hiddles weren’t in it. Archipelago is one of my fav indie British films of all times. It always surprises me when people criticise it for being about middle-class problems or something like that.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Intro, that restaurant scene in Archipelago! So awkward, so uncomfortable, so hilarious and everyone knows somebody like Cynthia.

    • Isadora says:

      I somehow suspect him being a writer. He has a way with words and I read his interview with Natalie Portman which was too nice to read to be written by someone who’s never done such things before. If I remember correctly it was somewhere mentioned (by him?) that he has a diary or something.

      Since the interview I kind of fantasize about reading some short stories written by him haha…

      • LadySlippers says:

        Benedict has also written.

        D@mn those two!

      • Hiddles forever says:

        Considering his education in the classical field, I would have been surprised if he was NOT a writer.

      • Isadora says:

        Really? I have a literature university degree and I hate writing lol.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Studying languages at the university level usually means lots of writing.

      • jammypants says:

        His vocabulary is impeccable.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Lilacflowers

        For me it was. I am not British born and I am learning a lot because I need to write massive and long essays (plus studying Greek-Latin which is helping to understand the etymology of the words).

      • Isadora says:

        As I said, I had my fair share of paper/essay/diploma writing. I’m still not overly fond of it and it’s very different to me from fictional or diary writing, which I never ever do. In fact reading some really, really great works by literary geniuses probably put me off writing forever because compared to those works every word I write down is just horrible and cringeworthy.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Hiddles Forever, I majored in modern languages, with a minor in political science, and was writing constantly and hated every second of writing. I strongly agree with what Isadora says. Reading Voltaire and Cervantes and others made me feel extremely inadequate when I had to put a word on a page. Then I went to law school because I hadn’t tortured myself with writing requirements enough. I absolutely HATE writing but, strangely, it is what I do for a living and studying languages, learning how to use words, trained me to do it well.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Lilacflowers @Isadora

        Well if you constantly compare yourself to great geniuses, you’ll never be passionate about many things in life. It is like I was reading Aristotle’s Ethics and feel inadequate because even after 2000 years I’d sound stupid trying to write that stuff… I’m in the Humanities/Classics (subject slightly different from Hiddles, but same environment more or less) and if I didn’t like writing to the core… well better to stop now than keep doing it 😉

        @isadora
        How did you get through your degree? Ouch!!

        On topic, I don’t have a diary though, I have not enough patience for that! 😉

      • Isadora says:

        I love talking about literature, I really do, it’s just the writing part that turns me a bit off. So I got through my degree with lots of moaning haha.. And at my university there is sometimes the possibility to write an exam or have an oral exam (love these, they are quicker and you don’t get cramps in your hand from writing too fast lol) instead of writing a term paper. But in the end you still have to write a 100-120 pages diploma thesis…

        I guess in the end I just enjoy (fictional) writing not enough to be passionate about it even though I suck at it compared to the great writers. I mean, I’m also a horrible singer (can’t hold a tune at all) but I still sing in the shower *g*. It’s just a lot more fun than writing.

  11. GeeMoney says:

    Cumby and Hiddles are best friends? Awwww….

    Also, Cumberbatch is a Cancer and Hiddleston is a Pisces… so they are a match made in heaven.

    • Nighty says:

      Hum, I’m a Cancer… hum…

      • Nighty says:

        I think so too….. he was born in february, right?
        Doesn’t matter… Cancer works well with cancer… turning to BC…. lol

      • GeeMoney says:

        Cancer works well with Virgo, too 🙂

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Nighty

        Hiddles was born on the same day of my bro’s, so he is an Acquarius 😉
        And they are difficult cookies with women, and they also are friends with.. Well even with their shoes if possible lol

      • jammypants says:

        I dated an Aquarius (literally born the same day as hiddlebottom) and I can attest they are a difficult lot. But I think upbringing can really make or break anyone. We know Hiddly got a rather wonderful upbringing so his terrible Aquarius tendencies seemed to be rather under control.

      • icerose says:

        I was married to an Aquarius with a birthday around the same time as Toms who went to a public school and oh did I mention he was an actor. And Tom reminds me of my dad especially in pictures from the Deep Blue Sea which has always slightly creeped me out.
        My god his birthday is within one day of my ex’s

      • jammypants says:

        That’s interesting Icerose! Yea, I remember falling for Hiddly and then looking up his birthday and thinking…of course. He has the same body type too. I don’t need reminders! Luckily, Hiddly is a wonderful woodland creature gracing the earth with its many gifts, magic, and talent, unlike my useless self-pitying troll of an ex :p

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @jammypants

        Hahahaha He is not an unicorn, I guess?
        When I looked up his birthday I also said “OMG!!”. If the same birthday is anything to go by, well my brother is quite private and he used to have secret girlfriends, meaning we always knew he was dating someone after months (oh God, I’m not starting a rumour here, Tom’s could be an entirely different story). My bro never got married, he is an emotional mess even now in his late 30ies. We had a difficult upbringing though and I guess Tom’s was far much better.

      • icerose says:

        @jammypants that must be why I can tolerate Hiddles’s wordiness so well. My ex was a very precise talker and every word was chosen with care and many pauses-not unlike Tom who use to (but not so much now) use very precise obscure words-I think it is part of the education -that and the guilt about what you do with your life. But he was far less ambitious.Other wise apart from curley hair physically they had very little in common oh apart from the long sloping forehead which ran in the family.

      • jammypants says:

        @Hiddles forever, I’m afraid not. Shame really. I can never pin down the emotions of Aquariuses. My ex’s was all over the place as well.

        @icerose, very interesting! I think mine also chose his words carefully as well. As for physical traits, mine was 6’3”, slender, and had really nice hands. He’s a mess.

    • kaisei says:

      Hum, Hiddleston is an Aquarius 🙂

      • Nighty says:

        Ups.. posted on the wrong place…

      • Nighty says:

        oh my.. we look like college girls discussin signs… lol… gonna make myself a cup of tea, anyone wants some?

      • Isadora says:

        Yes, thanks! Tea is one of the best inventions on this earth.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Nighty, I would love a cup of tea. Thank you.

      • Encumbered says:

        Yes, tea sounds lovely. Now we are talking about something civilized!

        Re: friends…I have often found myself a bit astounded as just how many BC has. Where does he ever find the time for all of them? It is possible to have too many, and could it be he is (over) compensating for the lack of a central relationship in his life?

      • Isadora says:

        Encumbered, I guess it depends how you define friends. I guess it also changes when you get older. I have quite a few very dear friends that I don’t hang out constantly with, but maybe see only every few months. It’s often difficult with people who have different lifestyles, jobs, family and whatnot. But what’s important to me is that it doesn’t matter how often you see that person it’s just always a pleasure and like you’ve seen them only yesterday the last time. And in this day and age it’s also easy to stay in contact in between via social media, sms, etc.

        I am not sure how a relationship or lack thereof should be connected to this… Maybe it is for people who generally immerse themselves in their relationships to the point that their friends hardly ever hear from them anymore. I never understood this.. when someone in my circle of friends gets a partner it hardly ever impacts their friendships or social connections.

      • Nighty says:

        I agree with Isadora, some of my best friends I only get to see them on holidays (Xmas, Easter and Summer) due to our work and the fact that we have been friends since high school (I’m already 38, so I’m talking about friendships with more than 20 years on them) and we live in different parts of the country… We only get to see eachother on holidays or when we manage through sms or facebook or mail to arange go somewhere on a weekend or so… Still, they are closer than some people I actually see on a daily basis… 🙂

    • sighs says:

      I went to look up his birthday, so obviously not as obsessed as I perhaps should be, but Hiddles isn’t a Pisces. I am, and his birthday is too far removed. Feb 9, I think is an Aquarius? Aries? It starts with an A….
      brb
      Aquarius.

      • GeeMoney says:

        My bad… I thought he was a Pisces. Must have gotten my dates mixed up.

        Anyhoo… Cancer is a Water sign and Aquarius is an Air sign… those two signs go well together, too.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        I am an Aries and I don’t wish that curse on anybody… And we don’t get along with anybody, all old hags and moody too lol

      • Isadora says:

        I’m Aries too and I agree with everything Hiddles forever said.

      • Abby_J says:

        I have to join the Aries club as well. Wow. A fight for Tommy between us three could be rather vicious. Maybe we should agree to share now and save the bloodshed.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        He’s an aquarius. I’m a gemini. That is the perfect pairing. He’s mine. The stars have spoken.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Abby_J and Isadora

        Hello, fellow Aries ladies. Sword or gun? 😀
        I guess we can save the bloodshed ‘later’ and do it ‘now’ 😀

        Abby, no way we are going to find an agreement about anything lol Let alone who’s going to get Tommy 😀

      • Abby_J says:

        I would prefer gun, but sword could be fun. 🙂 Paintball guns might be a lot less deadly.

        We could just agree to share. That might work for a short time, before one of us feels the need to take over. Then, pistols at dawn, I guess. 🙂

        Maybe we should just pick up two other famous guys that we agree on as well and then just trade around. Pretty sure that is a reality show waiting to happen.

      • Isadora says:

        I’ll take the Uzi, thanks!

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Isadora

        Ah! Lightsaber for me then 😉

      • Isadora says:

        Abby: Other guys? Hm… might work. Any suggestions? Because I’m awfully particular with guys.

        Hiddles forever: interesting choice! And hard to say who’s got the upper hand – lightsabers seem to be rather powerful and make metal confetti of the Uzi but at the same time lack in range (like any sword).

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Isadora

        I’ll ask Obi Wan if he can arrange a special lightsaber not laking in range for me 😀

        @Abby

        Well, suggestions about the other guys to swap around? 😉

      • Abby_J says:

        Hmmm….Well, his BFF Cumby doesn’t always do it for me, so I guess we have to leave him off the list, either that, or I only get him when I’m in the mood for him. Haha!

        There are so many to choose from. Are we keeping them close to the same age, because Colin Firth, if not?

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Abby J, Colin is sitting on a couch in my parlour at the moment because I rescued him when somebody tossed him out a window last week. He is quite agreeable to being passed around so long as nobody defenestrates him again. He would just like to finish his tea before he goes visiting.

      • Abby_J says:

        Why in the world would anyone throw that beautiful man out of a window? I’m agreeable to him finishing his tea. I’d be happy to join him.

        🙂

      • Isadora says:

        Colin? Not really… As I said I’m awfully particular. He’s wonderful but just not sexy to me. If we’re talking about the same age range I’d rather go for Sean Bean.

        Generally speaking I prefer men in their 30s though. So I have to suggest Fassbender, I think. Because Cumberboy is nice enough but falls in the Colin Firth category for me.

      • Abby_J says:

        Sean Bean would be good, as long as he doesn’t end up dead. That seems to happen a lot to him. If we need an older guy, I’d go for Josh Holloway. Sure, not a Brit, but perfect to imagine being stuck on an island with. 🙂

        I’m good leaving Cumby to his own devices. He usually doesn’t do it for me anyway. Sometimes, but not enough. 🙂

        I can deal with Fassbender. No Tom Hardy. I don’t get that guy.

        Do they have to be Brits? I am in love with Ian Somerhalder’s eyes. He seems like such a douchebag though that I would only want him delivered with gag, so I don’t have to actually talk to him. I’d take Matt Bomer as well, but well, that won’t work. 🙂

      • Isadora says:

        “Sean Bean would be good, as long as he doesn’t end up dead.” I guess it depends on how hard he has to.. erm.. work. Not that he gets an apoplexy from all the attention, we are Aries after all.

        I don’t get Tom Hardy either. 🙂 And I DO have a huge preference for Brits these days but they don’t have to be Brits.. Fassy is Irish. 😉 So Irish is good too (oh… for the older guy, I’d also take Ken Brannagh. He would get along with Hiddles too which is probably a bonus for the peace in our harem.)

        Josh Holloway is gorgeous but hm.. I don’t know. I had a bit of a crush on him 7 (?) years ago but it has kind of faded… With Ian Somerhalder I can’t decide if he looks very beautiful or kind of creepy.

        I’d take Matt Bomer because I really like White Collar, but alas..

        Maybe Hiddles forever has a suggestion?

      • Abby_J says:

        Ohhh! Kenneth Branagh can, at the very least, visit our group occasionally to mix things up a bit. I love him.

        It is true that Josh Holloway may not be looking as hot as he was back with the polar bears, but he is still dreamy.

        How about a Scot? I am having a hard time thinking of any (beyond David Tennant, who works for me, but isn’t everyone’s cup of tea).

      • Isadora says:

        I don’t know if you’ll read this but.. Scot? YES! I vote strongly for Ewan McGregor!

        (And yes, I realize that with Hiddles, Fassy, Sean Bean, Ken Branagh and Ewan McGregor ALL the guys I’ve mentioned are kind of blondish/gingerish and from a certain corner of the world. *cough* I’m sorry! Or… not really lol…)

  12. LadySlippers says:

    Totally OT.

    2nd Fun Fact for Friday.

    In French words are gendered (English has a great many gendered words too) and an ‘e’ at the end of a word is often employed to distinguish the gender of the subject (the e is to indicate a female).

    Male/Female words derived from French:

    Blond (male)/ Blonde (female)
    Fiancé (male)/ Fiancée (female)
    Divorcé (male)/ Divorcée (female)
    René (male)/ Renée (female)

    And so on…

    In English we have the same thing:

    Mister/ Mistress (used to both be titles gained upon marriage)
    Actor/ Actress
    Prince/ Princess
    Poet/ Poetess (dated)

    And so on…

    Not sure how many people knew that after seeing how many people use the word blonde when describing a man or fiancé when describing a woman.

  13. Make mine a double says:

    I love Wallander hair – he looks like he’s taken styling tips from a labradoodle. Think it’s lovely that they are BFF, even if the cricket / rugby talk would be a pain. Wonder if they’ve done the dance off in real life, haha.

    And as they’re best buddies, means I can get them both in the broom cupboard eh Nighty? ;p

    • Nighty says:

      The both… hum… And what about me? None of them in the broom cupboard for me? Not fair….

      * making a sad puppy face*

      • Make mine a double says:

        @Nighty, I’m sure we can work out some sort of time share arrangement. There are rather a lot of us now if we include the ladies at Thornfield and in the garden. This calls for excel spreadsheets and the like and I’m way too tired for that. Sadly not by cupboard action but rather the setting up of a new laptop. 9 hours so far and still not finished. I need some wine!

      • Nighty says:

        Hum… pcs are a nightmare sometimes…. I’m rested today because here is a holiday.. long weekend… 🙂
        Still have to correct kids paperworks… don’t feel like it though… ai..

      • Make mine a double says:

        I usually have some wine when I’m grading papars too. Wine helps so much… Good luck!

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        Ah Nighty, a fellow “New Hollander” I’m guessing!

      • Nighty says:

        Can’t drink alcohol for health reasons unfortunately, but I’m gonna make myself a cup of apple and cinnamon tea.. anyone want some?

      • Nighty says:

        Sorry Squirrel didn’t get the reference “new hollander”?

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        Oh, um, I meant Australian. It is long weekend in Oz so I presume you are referring to being in Australia. Was trying to be sneaky about it in case you prefer your location to be more private!

        Capt Cook called Oz New Holland originally and I was hoping you might get this reference without giving you away! My bad…

      • Nighty says:

        No Secret Squirrel , not Aussie, I’m Portuguese … here it’s holiday , celebration of the 40th anniversary of the ending of Salazarism (fascist regime) which lasted for almost 50 years… An overthrown of a regime (revolution) peaceful, only 4 people died in Lisbon in small confrontations… The revolution lasted less than 24 hours… 🙂
        And no worries, have no problem in saying where I’m from… it’s a whole country counting also with 2 archipels…. don’t think anyone is going oto figure out who and where I am in the middle of 11 million people… lol .

        🙂

      • Isadora says:

        Nighty, I’m jealous. You have the best climate in all of Europe (and yes, I once researched that based on climate charts because I have nothing better to do in winter when I’m freezing).

      • Nighty says:

        Yeap it’s a good climate depending on whether you’re living in the North or the South of the country… 2 years ago I was actually living in Algarve , 2 miles from the beach, needles to say went to the beach from march to october… 🙂
        But up in the North it’s quite cold in winter, temperatures reach 15º Fahrenheit and it snows…. Though in the summer they go up to 100ºF …

        It’s nice… 🙂

    • icerose says:

      they were seen dancing together at an Elton John concert

  14. Vesta says:

    Very happy to hear the are BFF – it makes things easier, since in my Mind Harem (which is a more evolved form of a mind palace) BC & TH live in the same sector anyway…

    • sighs says:

      mind harem! can i borrow that? i mean, not your particular harem. well, depends on who is in it, i suppose….

      • Vesta says:

        😉 By all means. Because you’re in this thread, I assume you’re ok with TH & BC in it. Both are well kept and in excellent condition.

    • LadySlippers says:

      I like it too. Hehe

    • lavanya says:

      How come you are thinking what I’m thinking? *saunters off to sector 1 of Mind Harem*

  15. Janeite says:

    Awww, I like him with the really dark hair. It’s not creepy to me at all. I think it makes his features really stand out. But I say this as someone who has nearly black hair myself and very pale skin so perhaps I’m a bit biased. And I’ve never been told that I look creepy. At least not to my face! 😉

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      Well I didn’t want to be the one to tell you, but… ONLY KIDDING!

      I dye my naturally brown/auburn hair dark (mahogany) and have pale skin, so it is a look I like to go for. Maybe because Tom has warm hues in his natural hair color, dyeing it black makes it too cool for his skin tone. Add a dash of dark cherry undertone in there and I think it would work much better on him. I sound like Trinny and Susannah, giving him coloring tips!

      I’ve got absolutely no complaints though, regardless of his hair color. It makes not an iota of difference when the lights are switched off!

      • jammypants says:

        The auburn he was sporting during the GQ Awards/Rush London premiere last year was gorgeous.

      • Janeite says:

        I agree! Hair or no hair, curly or straight, giner/blond/black, etc it makes no difference to me. Same goes for Benny and Colin Firth and all of my other imaginary British boyfriends.

      • pru says:

        Completely agree, he’s hot with any hair color! And even though I don’t think the dark hair looks particularly fantastic in these pictures, I think he can look really striking with it on film.
        Same with that other guy, I have the unpopular opinion of actually liking him blond.

      • jammypants says:

        nooo, Benny looks so plain as a blonde (and terrifying as Assange blonde). Benny looks better as a ginger or brunette.

  16. Intro Outro says:

    After having seen all these pics, i think i’m also starting to lean towards Hiddles as Sharpe being creepy rather than sexy. But… Isn’t it EXACTLY what his character should be? ^_~

  17. 'p'enny says:

    This is old interview news, he said this last year, when he landed the role of Crimson Peak. In fact the whole article is made up of a mish-mash of other interviews. Or he is just repeating himself. LOL

    • joe spider says:

      Or being asked the same questions over and over again!

      • Hiddles forever says:

        They don’t know what to ask anymore lol

      • 'p'enny says:

        @Hiddles Forever,

        journalists with such little imagination!

        let me talk to him… Shakespeare, philosophy, and poetry will be totally off the menu.

        on the menu will be…. hidden girlfriends, what’s really going on in his friendships with Chris and Benny and who/what doesn’t he like [must have at least one negative thought?

      • Hiddles forever says:

        *cough cough*

        Q: Mr. Hiddleston, what do you not like actually? From your interviews it seems like you like everything!
        A: ahh ahhh
        Interviewer speechless because Hiddles never failed to find words…
        A: … Fans?

        Luke *facepalm*

      • Nighty says:

        lol Hiddles forever..
        seeing him saying he didn’t like his fans would be priceless, I’d actually pay to see that happen, would be so much fun (tumblr meltdown)

        Oh and Luke *facepalm* would be too soft, he’d actually pass out!!

      • 'p'enny says:

        Q: Mr. Hiddleston, what do you not like actually? From your interviews it seems like you like everything!

        A: Underpants.

      • pru says:

        @’p’enny – HA! And thank God!!

      • Isadora says:

        HAHA, this, ‘p’enny!

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @’p’enny, that was marvelous!

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @Nighty

        “seeing him saying he didn’t like his fans would be priceless, I’d actually pay to see that happen, would be so much fun (tumblr meltdown)”

        I’ve to admit that was ‘wishful thinking’ on my part… meaning that the meltdown will be so wideranging that only a few would not be affected.
        And to be honest, I don’t think that Tom’s career would be that affected, he is a very good actor, he doesn’t actually need the rabid fans to have an audience 😉
        Someone like B. Cooper.. welll maybe that’s an entirely different story….

    • icerose says:

      I think he is repeating himself with slight variations because he gets asked the same questions. It was JJ who first described Adam as a cross between Syd Barrat and Hamlet when he and Tom first met up.
      If Tom does not like a film or director he just does not talk about it. He is a huge cine file who watches just about every style of film and has admitted that he has gone to two films in an afternoon. He probably does those how many of these films have you seen quizzes and scored 100%.

    • icerose says:

      its not the first time he has said they are good friends and they get seen together.

  18. lola lola says:

    I love him with dark hair! How can you say that?!? His Loki….*sigh *…

  19. Jax says:

    I might have to check OLLA out. love, Love, LOVE Tilda! And Hiddles is growing on me. Although not a fan of the dark hair. At least not with the tuxedo combo and that lighting, it washes a good looking man out!

    • Intro Outro says:

      Do check! OLLA is sooo much love. Granted, i generally simply adore Jarmusch and dig his sense of humour and his piercing insights into human nature, and OLLA is very much a classic Jarmusch film. One has to inhabit it in order to truly revel in it. And Hiddles is wonderful in it because he just goes with the flow and melds in with the film’s canvas.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Saw it tonight. As my friend said when leaving the theater: “that was two hours of just hanging out with two exquisite people and I could spend another 24 hours just hanging out listening to them talk.” @Intro Outro, as you said, the film is all about the canvas and the flow. The soundtrack is amazing. Loved it.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Lilacflowers

        I’m glad you liked it! ^_^ I LOVE that film.

        I really do hope that OLLA, Crimson Peak and *crosses fingers* High Rise will give Hiddles the boost he needs. Although 2 of these 3 are/will be indie productions, all the directors are highly respected. Personally, i don’t mind if he keeps doing theatre and indie films most of time though. Haha, i’m actually quite conflicted on this. Most of the films i watch are indies. But it’s stupid to deny how good it is for one’s film career to star in serious big-budget studio projects. Oohh well. Time will tell.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Intro Outro, since some actors seem to work well into their 70s, with the acclaim coming late in their careers, he’ll be fine so long as he works steadily, doesn’t matter the media of the projects, just the quality of the projects. And he does have big-budget exposure with Marvel. Combining that with theater work and indies makes for a rather well-rounded CV. I do wish he would do some theater here in the states, although not necessarily Broadway, some of the regional theaters, like A.R.T., do more experimental, quality productions.

      • Introo Outro says:

        @Lilacflowers:

        I agree. Actually, when you think about it, basically all of his post-RADA films/theatre productions (Unrelated, Archipelago, Midnight in Paris, War Horse, Wallander, Deep Blue Sea, Hollow Crown, Only Lovers Left Alive/Cymbeline, Othello, Coriolanus) received numerous nominations/awards and were critically acclaimed, as well as his performances in them. That’s a very impressive acting CV for 8 years even without 2 Thors and Avengers. It’s best not not chivvy things along i suppose.

        Re: theatre: i know next to nothing about American theatre =( It probably would only do him good in terms of attracting the attention of producers though, wouldn’t it?

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Intro Outro, it may help, although many successful stage actors here never move onto film. His CV, although short and covering barely a decade, is lacking in the total crap, such as low budget horror, teen sex romps, and bad rom coms, that clutter the CVs of most other actors. I think getting good critical reviews for a small part in an Oscar nominated Spielberg or Allen film probably carries quite a bit more weight than a major role in a Leprechaun VII or Saw X.

  20. Ellen says:

    In Hollywood everyone is BFF without actually hanging out without cameras darling.
    In this case I do think they are friends, not best friends but friends.

  21. Undeclared says:

    I never understood the Hiddleston appeal. To me he reminds me of the Candlestick in the movie Beauty and the Beast,

    • Isadora says:

      hm… If we stay within Disney movies I guess I rather go with the deranged bunny we got two days ago. I love the March Hare.

    • jammypants says:

      I don’t know why, but imagining him as Lumiere cracks me up.

  22. HappyFishes says:

    Really? There’s so many votes for lighter hair! I was shocked. I LOVE him with dark hair. It makes him look more exotic. hahahaha!!!!!!! Pale people never get the exotic comment. ALSO LOVE that him and Ben are friends. That’s amazing. I WANT THAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!

  23. Andrea says:

    I don’t get the appeal of this guy but maybe I’ve never seen him in any movies. Plus, I think he’s younger than me and I always like older guys (I’m 33). I DO get the appeal of Cumberbatch though. My god, his voice!!

    • Nighty says:

      He’s your age, 33 turned february,….

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      How could you love Ben’s voice and not Tom’s too?? They are both like one half of a pair of velvet slippers. Smooth, soft and get dirty really easily!

      What??

      • Nighty says:

        This… their voices are angelically smooth…. gota listen to tjeir interviews again… damn it.. why, why did you remind me of those smooth, soft whispering voices… damn you both….. be right back!!

        Edit: feeling so much better now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xtynyn2eY8

        But the best one:

        Tom’s story…

        *naughty expression thinking : “I wish I was part of the crew…*

      • icerose says:

        Tom is a Red Velvet cocktail and Benny a Caribbean Bulldog with Kahlua ,coke and Caribbean cream. One slides down the throat with a slight tickle as the champagne bubbles massage the lining whilst the other smothers the oesophagus as it slithers into your system.

      • jammypants says:

        LOL! oh Squirrel, trust you to compare the boys to slippers and make them still sound appealing :p

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @icerose, I think I need to try that Red Velvet thing.

      • magda says:

        I am with Andrea on this. Tom has a light tenor voice, whilst Benedict is a baritone. Both are very easy on the ears, but personally I always go deep :p

      • joe spider says:

        I think he was out running when he wore the cap and got stopped by fans.

        Sorry that was mean for Ellen further down.

      • lavanya says:

        @SecretSquirrel People who don’t think Tom’s voice is worth listening over and over and over again have not really listened to his reading of e.e.cummings’ May I feel said he.
        I’ve thing for voices. …. and intellect…and cheekbones…and manly mandibles.. So I feel frequently distracted; which does not help at all, really, since I’m making a mash-up of poetry and dialogues by Ben and Tom. I keep looping over ‘c-c-c-come… said he’ and ‘Come now, don’t be shy.’ I’d like to gift the final product to my bestie on her birthday.But I’d probably fuss till it is perfectly done and still not be happy. Satisfaction is not in my nature. If and when I get it done properly, if she permits, I’ll post a link here.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      No, Ellen, Tom is four years younger than Cumberbatch, which is one reason why the constant comparisons and the insistence of some that Tom must be jealous or is competing or copying is rather comical.

      • Ellen says:

        Oh I thought it was because Hiddles and Benny were the same age and sort of do the same roles not to mention coming from a similar background. I thought people like my boyfriend got confused and mixed them up thus annoying fans.

        Anyway here’s a new photo of Hiddles in his running gear with a fan for you all http://torrilla.tumblr.com/post/84054853487/kelsie-mckellar-just-met-twhiddleston-on-the#notes

      • Isadora says:

        Thanks! 🙂 My internal fashion analsyis was like: Coriolanus rehearsal jogging bottoms, Top Gear sweater, selfie picture earphones and… damn, that’s an ugly cap. Can not someone “accidentally” ruin it?

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Ellen, glad he is wearing a hat. No need for sunburn.

      • Ellen says:

        I’ve seen him wear that hideous cap on three diffrent occasions now and whilst I admire celebs re using clothes I think it’s time Hiddles through it out. He could wear the nice black cap he had last year when he was preparing for his UNICEF trip.

        Anyway apparently the fan from the running photos was there with her friend and he also tweeted her back as well. Cue other fans doing the same then moaning because he didn’t.

      • Ppp12 says:

        New item alert!!! The cutoff gloves! Though i think he used then in Coriolanus sword rehearsals. Going by Hiddles’ specific reply to her tweet, I think there’s something more personal and inspiring that was discussed between them, instead of the usual fan exchanges.

      • frat says:

        According to her “We talked about graduating and trying to find a job”

      • Isadora says:

        What a depressing topic. (for someone like me *g*)

        Lilacflower: Yes, he should wear a hat against sunburn. But a nice one. 😉

        I don’t really understand the cutoff gloves for running. Biking, of course. But why wear gloves for running? Does anybody know?

  24. Ellen says:

    Forget Benny being his BFF, it’s Monkey! Benny and bunny have been replaced in Hiddles affections. Sorry guys 🙁

  25. allons-y alonso says:

    Adroable. I also need to see OLLA. I have a feeling it will only be showing at The Dendy cinemas in Sydney. I will take one for the team and go to that arty hipster cesspool – that’s speaks a lot for how badly I want to see this film.

  26. LAK says:

    He usually rocks a suit, but the one above is not working for him.

  27. Hodgkiss says:

    Remember the story Benedict told ages ago about some weird fan sending him a riding crop after series one of Sherlock aired and how he was a bit creeped out by it?

    He recounted this story at one of the Australian conventions he was at recently and revealed he’d found out it was actually Hiddleston who’d sent the crop. And that he’d used Benedict’s credit card to pay for it.

    • fairyvexed says:

      Wouldn’t Cumberbatch have seen the charge? Also——how does he know Cumberbatch’s CC number?

    • jammypants says:

      “And that he’d used Benedict’s credit card to pay for it.”

      Sure he did…O.o

      A source to this “quote” would be nice. Otherwise, this is all piffle.

      • joe spider says:

        And how would he have been able to use someone else’s credit card?

      • Hodgkiss says:

        The source is twitter, that completely credible font of information, I’m afraid. Tweets from people who were at the convention.

        The ‘Hiddleston bought the riding crop’ thing was tweeted by plenty of people; I saw ONE person who mentioned the credit card thing. They may have made it up, but don’t shoot the messenger. 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

        I thought the riding crop was one Patrick Kennedy and Tom had taken from the set of War Horse.

      • Shiv says:

        They used his credit card….came from his friend Helen on twitter. She said it when talking to one of the Cumberbatch fan accounts about it.

      • jammypants says:

        My only qualm with Tom being friends with Ben is the shady gossip that always seems to follow. Something cute and funny like this story turns into shade towards Tom, usually from the Ben camp. Why of course.

      • Roberta says:

        How is it shade? And there’s plenty of criticism of BC out there.

    • 'p'enny says:

      the riding crop was sent by tom hiddleston and the other actor in War House as a joke, but the story about using his credit card? that i’ve not read or heard that. is that a case of chinese whispers?

      • joe spider says:

        Sorry Hodgkiss, I wasn’t shooting the messenger, apologies if it came across that way.

    • Ellen says:

      This would make a great fan fiction if you add the words, Loki, Sherlock and Blindfold

    • EleanorRigby says:

      I’m humiliated that I know this information but since someone asked here it is: The source is his friend, Helen, on twitter who advertises her friendship with him like Pepsi advertises cola. She also claims credit for his photobomb of U2 at the Oscars and probably lots of other Cumberbatch-related things. I can’t follow her, it’s exhausting. Anyways, regarding the riding crop…..she confirmed it was true.

      • jammypants says:

        Her friendship with him sounds gross. And to me, it’s never true until Benedict, Patrick, or Tom say it is.

  28. Isadora says:

    Tumblr is having a minor meltdown right now because Joss Whedon threw (quite unintentionally imho) a bit of shade on Tom during a recent interview for Avengers 2.

    It’s rather funny. People are even freaking out that Tom might be so incredibly upset about his comment that he won’t even reprise his role as Loki in Thor 3. Seriously, where get these people their ideas from??

    • M.A.F. says:

      It is due to their lack of reading comprehension and not knowing how to read between the lines.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Some of the gossip sites have been playing it up that way, but I agree with your opinion that Whedon didn’t intentionally slight him and it is unlikely Tom even knows about it. He’s under contract to Marvel and Whedon hasn’t directed the Thor films. Anyone having a meltdown over this is very silly.

      • eugene says:

        I do think Whedon’s still pissed with Marvel not allowing him to have another villain in Avengers 1, and took it out on Loki more than once. Last time he called Hiddleston “one effete British character actor” and thought Loki has many fangirls because Hiddles is a hunk.

      • Ellen says:

        Oh here we go. Tom’s nannies are out in force being outraged on his behalf.
        To me it didn’t read that weldon was critersizing anyone. He just said last film had one bad guy the new one has more.
        I dout Tom would lose sleep about this.

      • eugene says:

        Whedon had mentioned the Loki issue quite a few times prior to this. While I don’t think Hiddleston would have anything but appreciation of the chance to be the only villain in one of the biggest superhero movies ever, it is unprofessional of Whedon to keep throwing that bit of shade.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @eugene:

        I got the impression Whendon is a rather tongue-in-cheek person overall. He had only good things to say about Loki and Hiddleston in The Dark World DVD extras.

        Re: effete actor *sniggers*: This is what he said:

        “I definitely felt like I have Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, I have four of the biggest, baddest… just the toughest guys out there – and I have one effete British character actor… The ace in the hole is Tom Hiddleston, because he’s so compelling and commanding and gracious about it that it became, ‘Oh it’s about how he gets in their heads – it’s going to be fine. But it took me a long time to accept that because they need someone to hit!”

        In context, those words assume a very different nuance 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Intro, Whedon had good things to say about Tom in the Avengers commentary too. Even describing how he had seen him in Othello and wanted to work with him after that so he was really happy to learn they had cast him as Loki.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Lilacflowers, IIRC, Whedon came to see Hiddles in Coriolanus, too. He’s obviously very appreciative of Tom as an actor. While i easily understand that he might somewhat resent that Marvel had him make Loki the only villain in Avengers 1, this doesn’t mean he didn’t like Loki as character or the way Hiddles played him.

        Edit: proof http://torrilla.tumblr.com/post/70090398335/joss-whedon-saw-twhiddleston-in-coriolanus-at

    • Intro Outro says:

      “But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.”

      These words? People are upset and think that’s shading? *blinks slowly* That’s one of those very few times when all i can say is “Get a f*cking life and stop overinvesting yourselves!” o_O

      • Make mine a double says:

        If thet think that’s an insult or shade, god help them if someone really laid into them. *cue Hiddles nannies curling into a ball and rocking back and forth*

      • Isadora says:

        As Lilacflowers said, some gossip sites have blown this quite up and made some kind of Loki/Tom vs. Ultron(?)/James Spader out of this. Like Tom was somehow lacking and James Spader is the answer to all of Whedon’s wishes. But yes, still lacking in reading comprehension and to me the funniest part is that someone actually thinks that Hiddles wouldn’t reprise his role for Thor 3 because of that. I mean… never mind the Marvel contract and never mind the storyline (because Loki has to be in Thor 3 after the ending of Thor 2 and they can hardly replace him, just write him out), it’s completely hilarious to imagine Hiddles in some kind of diva huff over this comment. “What??? Whedon doesn’t think the sun rises and sets for my portrayal of Loki as a villain? Preposterous! *stamping feet* I’m never wearing Loki’s costume again now!” *overdramatic exit*

        Yeah… sure… 😀

      • jammypants says:

        It’s more like Joss shading his own writing haha

    I was sipping water. I somehow choked and snorted at the same time *stamping feet in Hiddles-generated puddles*.
    I try to follow Whedon’s interviews because I admire his quiet, tongue-in-cheek attitude and respect his craft. How do people (demented followers mostly)comprehend the universal truth that he(Joss) is shading Tom?
    If I may, in the words of Sherlock, and with all due respect to the so called nannies(I abhor that word) ” As usual, you see but you do not observe.”
    As for the other Ben/Tom shading thing done by fans, I love Cuddles,i.e., Hiddlesbatch. In fact, I ship them(avec moi,of course). I hate it when people do that! Using words like ‘superficious’ does not make you look any less shallow, and saying that somebody is all artifice may make think you ‘fake’ too.
